This remarkable feat marked Ashwin’s 37th five-wicket haul in Test cricket, solidifying his status as one of the game’s greats. Bowling on his home turf at Chepauk, Ashwin’s ability to turn the ball and create pressure was evident as he dismantled the opposition, leading India to a commanding 280-run victory.

Ravichandran Ashwin’s impact for India against Bangladesh

In addition to his stellar bowling performance, Ashwin made a significant contribution with the bat during the first innings. He scored a vital century, helping the team reach a total of 376 runs. Despite not taking any wickets in the first innings, his batting prowess was crucial in establishing a strong foundation for India’s innings. His dual impact was key to India’s comprehensive victory, reinforcing his reputation as one of the finest all-rounders in contemporary cricket.

List of significant milestones achieved by Ashwin in the Chennai Test:

1. 37th Five-Wicket Haul in Tests

Ashwin’s 37th five-wicket haul in Test cricket places him in elite company, equaling the legendary Shane Warne‘s tally for the second-most five-wicket hauls in the format. This achievement is a testament to Ashwin’s longevity, consistency, and unmatched skill as a spinner. With this record, Ashwin stands shoulder-to-shoulder with some of the finest bowlers the game has seen. This surpasses Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon’s tally of 10, making Ashwin the bowler with the most five-fors in?? WTC history. His performance in these high-pressure matches highlights his crucial role in India’s success in the tournament. Whether playing on home soil or in challenging overseas c?onditions, Ashwin’s ability to exploit any surface and deliver match-winning spells sets him apart from his peers in the WTC era.

3. India’s Leading Wicket-Taker in the Fourth Innings

Ashwin further cemented his reputation as a match-winner in crunch situations by becoming India’s leading wicket-taker in the fourth innings of Test matches. He surpassed the legendary Anil Kumble, who previously held the record with 94 wickets in the fourth innings. Ashwin now has 99 wickets in this phase of the game, reflecting his ability to deliver under pressure when conditions are toughest for bowlers. The fourth ??innings often demands both patien??ce and craft, and Ashwin’s expertise in navigating these challenges has made him India’s go-to spinner in such critical moments.

4. Crossed Courtney Walsh’s Wicket Tally

In this match, Ashwin added another monumental achievement to? his illustrious career by surpassing West Indian legend Courtney Walsh’s total of 519 Test wickets. By reaching 522 wickets, Ashwin now stands as the eighth-highest wicket-taker in Test history. His ability to consistently perform at such a high level across different eras, conditions, and against diverse batting line-ups is remarkable. Overtaking Walsh, who was one of the most feared fast bowlers in the 1990s, highlights Ashwin’s unique standing as one of the finest spinners of all time, seamlessly transitioning from being a match-winner? at home to a threat in overseas conditions.

5. Second-Most Hundreds at No. 8 or Below

Ashwin’s century in the first innings of this match was his fourth while batting at number 8 or lower in Test cricket, placing him second only to New Zealand’s Daniel Vettori, who has five centuries from this position. This record highlights Ashwin’s all-round capabilities and the depth he brings to India’s batting line-up. His ability to contribute vital runs down the order has often rescued India from precarious situations. With both bat and ball, Ashwin has proven himself to be one of the most versati??le cricketers in modern times, providing match-winning contributions in multiple facets of the game.

6. 30 Five-Wicket Hauls and 20+ Fifty-Plus Scores

Ashwin achieved a unique milestone by becoming the ??only player in Test cricket history to have taken 30 five-wicket hauls and scored 20 or more fifty-plus scores. This rare co??mbination underlines his prowess as an all-rounder and highlights his importance in both disciplines of the game. Not only has he consistently delivered with the ball, but his ability to produce crucial innings with the bat has also made him a game-changer for India. Achieving this feat requires a balance of patience, technique, and skill, all qualities that Ashwin has displayed throughout his stellar Test career.

Bangladesh‘s cricket team etched their names in history books with a remarkable 2-0 series victory over Pakistan in the recently concluded Test series. This triumph marked their first-ever away series win in the red-ball format since 2009, a feat that sh?owcased their growth and determination.

Tigerswin in Rawalpindi has made significant changes in the World Test Championship (WTC) standings. The victory has not only boosted their confidence but also sign????ificantly improved their position in the points table.

A professional chase from Bangladesh

Chasing a challenging target of 185 runs to win on the final day, Bangladesh’s batting lineup exhibited unwavering composure. They chased down the target with six wickets to spare, demonstrating their ability to handle pressure situations.

A historic milestone

This series win holds immense significance for Bangladesh, as it was only their second Test series victory on foreign soil. Their previous away series win came in 2009 against the West Indies, a tour led by the current Test team member, Shakib Al Hasan.

While Bangladesh had secured a solitary Test win against Zimbabwe in Harare in 2021, it was not part of a full-fledged series. The Rawalpindi series victory, therefore, stands as a testament to their con??sistent performance in foreign conditions.

Litton Das and Mehidy Hasan Miraz: The architects of victory

The Player of the Match, Litton Das, played a pivotal role in Bangladesh’s success. His century in the first innings, along with a crucial 165-run partnership with Mehidy Hasan Miraz, brought Banglad??esh back into th??e contest after a shaky start.

Miraz, too, made significant contributions. His five-wicket haul in the first innings and valuable runs with the bat proved to be instrumental in Bangladesh’s triumph.

Impact of Bangladesh’s win on WTC standings

Bangladesh’s victory has had a significant impact on the WTC standings. Their 33 points from the series have propelled them up the ladder, surpassing England and securing a spot in the top 5. This is a major achievement for a team that has histor??ically struggled in Test cricket.

The Big 5 on WTC standings

  1. India (68.52%)

India‘s last Test match was against England in Dharamshala, which they won by a narrow margin of 64 runs. India’s strong performances throughout the WTC cycle have kept them at the top of the standings. Their batting depth and bowling attack have been key factors in their success.

  1. Australia (62.50%)

Australia‘s last Test match was against New Zealand in Christchurch, which they won by 3-wickets. Australia’s victory over India was a significant boost to their WTC campaign. Their ability to perform consistently in tough conditions has been a hallmark of their success.

  1. New Zealand (50.00%)

New Zealand‘s last Test match was against Australia in Christchurch, which they lost by a margin of 3-wickets. While New Zealand has been a consistent performer in recent years, their recent loss to Australia has slightly dented their position in the WTC standings. They will need to bounce back with strong performances in their upcoming matches.

  1. Bangladesh (45.83%)

Bangladesh’s last Test match was against Pakistan in Rawalpindi, which they won by 6 wickets. Bangladesh’s historic series victory over Pakistan has catapulted them into the top 5 of the WTC standings. Their performance in this series has shown that they are capable of competing with top-tier teams.

  1. England (45.00%)

England’s last Test match was against Sri Lanka at the Lord’s, which they won by a big margin of 190 runs. England’s victory over Sri Lanka has helped them maintain their position in the top 5. However, they will need to improve their consistency to challenge for a place in the WTC final.

Overall, the top 5 teams in the WTC are closely matched, and any team could still make a strong push for a place in the final. The remaining matches in the cyc??le will be crucial in determining the final standings and the teams that qualify for the championship match.

South Africa secured a 40-run victory against West Indies in a fiercely contested second Test in Guyana, marking a 1-0 series win. The opening Test had ended in a rain-affected draw, making this win even more significant for the Proteas. With this result, South Africa climbed to the fifth spot in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25?? standings, while West Indies remained anchored at th?e bottom.

WI vs SA: A gritty contest dominated by bowlers

The second Test saw an intense battle between the two sides. South Africa, batting first, were bundled out for 160, courtesy of a brilliant five-wicket haul by Shamar Joseph. In response, West Indies struggled to 144/10, with Jason Holder’s resilient 54* being the lone bright spot in their innings. In their second innings, South Africa posted a more competitive 246/10, thanks to crucial fifties from Aiden Markram and Kyle Verreynne. This set West Indies a challenging target of 263 runs. However, they could only manage 222/10, falling short by 40 runs. South Africa’s victory was sealed as their bowlers consistently applied pressure, ultimately securing a hard-fought win.

Impact on WTC 2023-25 standings

This victory was pivotal for South Africa in the context of the ICC Wor??ld Test Championship. Entering the match, the Proteas were languishing in the seventh position on the WTC table. The win propelled them to the fifth spot, significantly boosting their chances in the ongoing WTC cycle. South Africa now has 28 points with a PCT (percentage of points) of 38.89%, having recorded two wins, three losses, and one draw from six matches. This?? rise in the standings reflects their potential to remain competitive in the WTC race.

On the other hand, the West Indies’ woes continued as they remain rooted to the ninth and last position in the WTC standings. With just 20 points and a PCT of 18.52%, the Caribbean side has had a dismal WTC campaign, recording only one win, two draws, and six losses. This performance underscores the significant rebuilding work needed for the West Indies to regain their former glory in Test cricket.

Top of the Table: Leads the WTC standings with dominant performances

India continues to set the benchmark in the WTC standings, sitting comfortably at the top with a PCT of 68.51%. Their dominance has been evident, particularly in their comprehensive 4-1 home series victory against England earlier this year. India has won six out of their nine matches in the current WTC cycle, with only two losses and one draw. This ?commanding performance has kept them ah??ead of their rivals, showcasing their strength across different conditions and against various oppositions.

Australia, another formidable force in Test cricket, retains the second spot in the WTC standings with a PCT of 62.50%. The Aussies have been consistent, securing eight wins, three losses, and a draw, maintaining their position as serious contenders for the WTC final. New Zealand, the inaugural WTC champions, are current??ly in the third position with a PCT of 50%. The Blackcaps have been steady, winning three and losing three matches, as they look to def??end their title in the current cycle.

Sri Lanka and Pakistan in close pursuit of top spots

Sri Lanka have made significant strides in the WTC standings, currently occupying the fourth spot with a PCT of 50%. Their recent 2-0 series victory over Bangladesh earlier this year was crucial in elevating their position. The Lankans have registered two wins and two losses, showing their ability to compete effectively in the Test arena. This rise in the standings has pushed Pakistan down to the sixth position. Pakistan, with a PCT of 36.66%, has had a mixed campaign with two wins and three losses.?? Their inconsistency has cost the?m valuable points, but they remain within striking distance of the top four.

England and Bangladesh: Mid-table struggles

Bangladesh finds themselves in the eighth position on the WTC points table, with a PCT of 25%. Despite their struggles, including three losses and only one win, the team has shown flashes of potential. Nevertheless, they will need to find greater consistency to climb higher in the standings. England, who were riding high after a 3-0 home series win against the West Indies last month, have slipped to the seventh position??. With a PCT of 36.54%, England has six wins, six losses, and one draw to their name. Their fluctuating form has seen the??m fall behind in the WTC race, and they will need to regroup to challenge for a top-four finish.

Understanding the World Test Championship points system

The ICC World Test Championship standings are determined by the percentage of points earned (PCT), which ensures that teams are ranked based on their performances relative to the matches they have played. Each win in the WTC earns a team 12 points, while a draw gives each side four points. In the rare event of a tie, teams are awarded six points each. While a loss results in no points, teams can also lose points due to slow over-rates, adding another layer of strategy and discipline to the competition. This system reward?s consistent performance and ensures that every match and every point matters in the race to the WTC final.

In a dominating display, England clinched a resounding victory against West Indies in the first test of the three-match series at Lord’s, part of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25. England triumphed with a substantial margin of 114 runs and an innings, marking a significant achievement for the team.

England struggles at the bottom of the World Test Championship points table

Despite their commendable win against the West Indies,  England are positioned at the bottom of the current points table for the 3rd edition of the WTC.  England have been one of the most active teams in this championship, having played eleven matches, second only to Australia‘s twelve matches. Out of these, England have secured victories in four matches and suffered defeats in six encounters with one tied match. The team faced a devastating setback earlier this year during their tour of India in January 2024, where they succumbed to a series loss, facing defeats in  four out o?f five matches.

India’s dominance and upcoming challenges in the WTC

India are currently at the top of the points table in WTC with 74 points, showcasing their formidable performance in the championship so far. Having played nine matches, India have emerged victorious in six games and suffered defeats in two with one draw. India’s consistent performance placed them in a strong position as they aim to secure a spot in the WTC final in June 2025, having been finalists in both the 1st and 2nd editions but narrowly missing out on the title.

Looking ahead, India are gearing up for an intense schedule of upcoming matches. They are scheduled to play 10 Tests in total, including two matches against Bangladesh starting from September 2024, followed by a series of three matches against New Zealand commencing in October 2024. India‘s triumphant journey in the T20 World Cup 2024 concluded with a thrilling victory over South Africa, ending a more than decade long wait for a World Cup title. The Men in Blue displayed exceptional skill and determination through??out the tournament to clinch the coveted trophy?.

This victory marked Rahul Dravid‘s last stint as head coach, as his Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) contract ended with the culmination of the global showpiece event. Before his departure, Dravid gave India’s talismanic batter Virat Kohli a special and final task to complete.

Virat Kohli’s stellar performance

Kohli was a standout performer in the final, playing a crucial innings of 76 off 59 balls to help India set a competitive total of 176/7. The bowlers, led by Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya, then restricte?d South Africa to 169/8, registering a 7-run win for India.

Rahul Dravid’s final assignment to Virat Kohli

After the summit clash, as the players reveled in their hard-earned triumph??, the Indian dressing room was filled with jubilation and celebrations. A heartwarming video shared by the ICC on its Instagram handle captured the joyous moments, with Indian players taking turns to pose with the trophy.

Amid the celebrations, outgoing head coach Dravid delivered a special task to Kohli, saying, “All three white ticked off, one red to go.” This cryptic message was a nod to Kohli’s achievements in the three white-ball formats – winning the ODI World Cup 2011, the Champions Trophy 2013, and now the T20 World Cup. Dravid’s message underscored the next big challenge for Kohli and the team: winning the World Test Championship (WTC) title, thereb??y completing a clean sweep of all three major ICC tournaments.

Kohli’s quest to achieve the eternity

Kohli’s illustrious career is already ado??rned with remarkable achievements, but the one trophy that continues to elude him and the Indian team is the World Test Cham??pionship mace.

Kohli??, who was instrumental in?? India’s victories in the ODI WC 2011 and CT 13, now has the T20 WC triumph added to his illustrious list.

Despite this, the WTC remains a significant goal. India reached the finals of the ultimate event in both 2021 and 2023 but fell short against New Zealand and Australia, respectively. Kohli’s batting and the team’s resolve will be crucial as they aim to qualify for the WTC Final next year in England, with the ultimate goal of securing the cove??ted Test Championship mace.

On Tuesday, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) announced the schedule of their much-anticipated series with England. The series will kick off on November 28 this year and continue until Dece??mber 18.

New Zealand and England are gearing up for a high-stakes battle, with the series taking place in Christchurch, Wellington, and Hamilton. As the World Test Championship looms, this series holds immense significance for both sides. The Blackcaps, currently ranked third on WTC standings, are eager to maintain their position, while England, at the bottom of the table, is determined to climb up.

New Zealand Cricket Chief expects big crowds in the home test matches

Scott Weenink, the CEO of NZC, said that he is confident about the upcoming series, and the early signs are pointing towards a passionate response from fans, potentially reaching the same level of electric atmosphere wit??nessed during the home Tests against Australia.

“In the past, there’s often been a lot of talk in New Zealand about the popularity of test cricket – without that translating into ticket sales or viewership numbers,” said Scott.

“The difference over the past summer, and in terms of the upcoming tests against England, is that the interest is being converted to bums on seats and is driving record viewership numbers,” the 51-year-old added.
