During the final of the Women’s T20 Challenge 2020 in Sharjah, Trailblazers’ Nattakan Chantam came up with a stunning effort that was certain to catch th?e attention of the cricketing world.

The first cricketer from Thailand to feature in the Women’s T20 Challenge, Chantam produced a jaw-dropping effort to save two runs for her side.

Chasing an outside edge off Jemimah Rodrigues’ bat, Chantam gave it her all to prevent the ball from reaching the boundary line. Sophie Ecclestone was the bowler.

That effort came in the second over as Supernovas were chasing Trailblazers’ 118 for eight wickets in 20 overs at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

The video clip of Nattakan has since gone viral and won praise from many, including contemporary players like England’s Kate Cross. “Worth it for this piece of fielding though,” Kate wrote while commenting on a tweet that attached the video of Nattakan’s effort.

“I just saw a boundary save in the women’s T20 challenge from Chantam that was as good as anything I saw in 59 IPL matches this season!” tweeted commentator Joy Bhattacharjya.

Later in the Supernovas’ innings, Nattakan took a brilliant catch at cover-point to help Deepti Sharma in dismissing the dangerous Jemimah. Supernovas were eventually restricted to 102 for seven wickets in 20 overs, which gave Trailblazers’ their maiden title with a 16-run victory.

It was a welcome return to the field for Indian players who were out of action since March due to the coronavirus pandemic.? Trailblazers skipper Smriti ??spoke about that during the post-match presentation.

“The first one two months of the lockdown was good to spend time with the family. But I think in the last three-four months we got time to go out and start hitting some balls. It was a good time for all of us to go back and work on ourselves which we don’t get usually,” said Smriti.

In the second match of Women’s T20 Challenge 2020, Trailblazers trounced Velocity by ??nine wickets at Sharjah Cricket?? Stadium on Thursday.

Chasing a paltry target of 48 runs was never going to trouble the Trailblazers and precisely what happened. They lost only one wicket in the form of skipper Smriti Mandhana (6) to chase down the target within eight overs.

Opener Deandra Dottin with unbeaten 29 and Richa Ghosh (13 not out) took their side over the finishing line. The huge victory awarded Trailblazers a top position in the points table with a positive net run rate of +3.905.

Ecclestone, Goswami restricted Velocity at 47/10

Earlier, a terrific bowling performance by Trailblazers completely destroyed the batting unit of Velocity. Only three batters – Shafali Verma (13), Shikha Pandey (10), and Kasperek (11) – were able to score runs in double figures as Velocity were bundled out for 47 runs. It was the lowest score in the history of the Women’s T20 Challenge.

England spinner Sophie Ecclestone was the chief architect behind the destruction. The No.1 ranked T20I bowler exhibited her A-game by picking up four wickets for just 9 runs in 3.1 overs.

Apart from Ecclestone, Rajeshwari Gayakwad and Jhulan Goswami shined with the ball as the duo bagged two wickets each. Deepti Sharma also contributed with one scalp.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Saturday that the Women’s T20 Challenge 2020 will be hosted at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. The seven scheduled matches will be played during the Indian Premier League (IPL) Playoff week.

Earlier, three teams participated during the 2019 edition of the women’s T20 tournament namely IPL Trailblazers, IPL Velocity and IPL Supernovas. However, in this edition of the tournament, four teams will feature instead of three teams from last year’s competition.

The three teams from last year were captained by Indian Women’s team stars Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana and Mithali Raj.

“As part of its ongoing commitment to grow the women’s game, BCCI are pleased to announce the 2020 Women’s T20 Challenge. The tournament which started in 2018 and was a huge success, further garnered all the right eyeballs in the year to follow,” the BCCI announced in its press release.

IPL Supernovas, captained by India’s current T20 skipper, Kaur, won the championship last year, on a final ball-thriller.

“The 2019 games, comprising three teams were played at Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur during the IPL Playoff and Finals week. The tournament was played with great intensity which saw the winner of 2019 WT20 Challenge being decided over the last ball of the match,?the release stated further.

International stars such as Ellyse Perry, Chamari Atapattu, Sophie Devine, Suzie Bates, Jahanara Alam, Danielle Wyatt, Sophie Ecclestone, Amelia Kerr and Stafanie Taylor participated in the grand women’s tournament last year.

“2020 aims to be no different and this edition will see a 4th team added to the tournament. The WT20 Challenge this year will feature some of the world’s best women cricketers and will have 7 matches played during the IPL Playoff week at Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur. Like the previous editions, this year’s Women’s T20 Challenge too promises to be an exciting prospect,” concluded the Indian board in its release.
