Already assured of a place in the Super 8 phase of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, the West Indies faced Afghanistan in their final group match at the Daren Sammy ?National Cricket Stadium in St. Lucia on Mo?nday. Azmatullah Omarzai’s expensive over

During the match, Afghan bowler Azmatullah Omarzai conceded 36 runs in one over, equaling an undesirable record in T20 World Cup history. Notably, during the 2007 T20 World Cup, England’s Stuart Broad gave away 36 runs when Yuvraj Singh hit six consecutive sixes in an over Pooran, meanwhile, scored 26 of those 36 runs (two fours and three sixes), with the rest co??????????????????????????ming from extras.

Opting to bat first after losing the toss, West Indies rode on a magnificent innings from Nicholas Pooran (98 off 53 balls) to post a daunting total of 218/5. Pooran smashed eight sixes and six fours in a belligerent display of power-hitting, ably supported by Johnson Charles (43 off 27) at the top of the order.

Afghan bowling lacked bite

The Afghan bowling attack struggled to contain the Windies batters. While Gulbadin Naib picked up two wickets, the likes of Rashid Khan (0/45) and Naveen-ul-Haq (1/41) were expensive.

Windies bowling dominates

In reply, Afghanistan’s chase never got going. Openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran (38 off 28) fell cheaply. The West Indies bowlers shared the spoils with Obed McCoy (3/14) leading the way with three wickets. Akeal Hosein (2/21) and Gudakesh Motie (2/28) were equally i?mpressive, restricting Afghanistan to a p??altry 114 all out in 16.2 overs.

Pooran’s match-winning knock was deservedly awarded the Player of the Match trophy. The win gave the West Indies a crucial psychological boost as they head into the Super 8 stage of the tournament.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) on Tuesday announced the squads for the upcoming Afghanistan series. The Windies will play three T20Is, three ODIs, and a Test at Dehradun in Indi??a between November 5 and December 1.

Keiron Pollard returns as captain of both limited-overs squads, while previous T20I skipper Carlos Brathwaite is absent from all three sq?uads. Test and former ODI captain Jason Holder f??inds a place in all three squads.

Chris Gayle played the last ma?tch of his fifth and final World Cup against Afghanista?n in Leeds on Thursday. The West Indies legend has decided to end his international career after playing the home series against India next month.

Gayle h??as amassed 1186 runs at a strike-rate of 90.53 and an average of 35.93 in 34 innings across five World Cups. He also took 16 wickets with his part-time off-spin.

“Been a privilege and honour to represent West Indies in five WCs, disappointed to end without making it to the final four. Lot has happened behind the scenes to get here and be here, that’s fantastic.

“Would’ve loved to lift the trophy, but it didn’t happen but at the same time it was fun, enjoyed it. All the guys rallied around me, got the support of the youngsters. Must commend the staff for the work ethics they’ve put in. Words can’t explain my feeling at the moment honestly,” Gayle told the reporters after West Indies beat Afghanistan by 23 runs in their last outing at the 2019 World Cup.
