Experienced wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan is emerging as the leading contender to be appointed as Pakistan’s captain in the white-ball formats. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is set to announce the touring squad for the upcoming series in Australia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. In recent days, Pakistani selectors have met with PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi and consulted with white-ball head coach Gary Kirsten to finalize the decision.

Squad announcement expected soon

A PCB source revealed that the selectors are expected to announce Pakistan’s white-ball squad by Sunday, as the team will depart for Australia a day after the third Test against England concludes on October 28.

Rizwan is being considered the top candidate for the white-ball captaincy due to his seniority, consistent performances, and proven leadership skil??ls in domestic? cricket and the Pakistan Super League (PSL), making him a dependable choice for the role.

“The third Test against England concludes on October 28, and the team is scheduled to depart for Australia the following day, so the selectors will likely announce the white-ball squad by Sunday. Given his dependability and successful captaincy in domestic circuits, Rizwan is at the forefront to take on the white-ball captaincy,” a source within the PCB stated.

Selectors given authority to choose captain

Earlier this month, Babar Azam decided to relinquish his captaincy role to focus solely on his batting. Pakistan’s itinerary includes nine ODIs and nine T20Is across the tours of Australia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. Following the white-ball series, Pakistan are also set to play two Test m?atches against South Afri?ca before heading back home.

The source further mentioned that the PCB has granted selectors the authority to decide the captaincy. Selectors Aaqib, Azhar Ali, and Aleem Dar have reportedly spoken?? with ?Rizwan, gauging his interest in assuming the leadership role.

Key players likely to return for white-ball series

Selectors are expected to include key players such as Babar, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Naseem Shah in the white-ball s??quad after they were rested and missed the last two Tests against England. ??Notably, Pakistan recently secured a 152-run victory over England in Multan, leveling the three-match Test series 1-1.

Following the ODIs, the teams will shift? to Clontarf for the T20I series, with the first match on the 14th and the second on the 15th. This series offers a significant opportunity for Ireland to compete against a top-tier team like England on home soil.

Gaby Lewis takes over captaincy

With regular captain Laura Delany sidelined due to an unfortunate ankle injury, the leadership baton has been passed to Gaby Lewis. Lewis, who herself was recovering from a quad strain sustained during the recent Sri Lanka series, is making a timely return to the squad. Her appo?intment as captain in such a pivotal series underscores her importance to the team, both as a leader and a key player. Lewis’s return is seen as a crucial boost, especially considering the challenge posed by a formidable England side.

Momentum from historic Sri Lanka series victory

This success marked a significant milestone for Irish women’s ?cricket, highlighting their growing competitiveness on the international stage. The selectors, recognizing the importance of building on this momentum, have retained the core group of players who played pivotal roles in that series.

High stakes in the ICC Women’s Championship

The three-match ODI series against England is more than just a contest between two teams; it is a crucial component of the ICC Women’s Championship. This series presents a golden opportunity for Ireland to make significant strides in the championship and improve their standings. The return of Gaby Lewis, coupled with the team’s recent positive ??performances, injects a sense of optimism that Ireland can defy the odds and rise up the rankings.

Fitness boosts and squad updates

The squad announcement also brought good news on the fitness front. Alice Tector, who made an impressive debut against Sri Lanka, has been retained, affirming her potential as a future star for Ireland. Additionally, Una Raymond-Hoey, who made a much-??anticipated return to the national setup after a four-year hiatus, is now fully fit after being sidelined due to injury.? England national selector Luke Wright has publicly acknowledged Jonny Bairstow‘s disappointment after the veteran wicketkeeper was omitted from the white-ball squads for the upcoming series against Australia. Notably, England’s home serie??s against Australia will commence on September 11.

Absence of Jonny Bairstow for the white-ball series against Australia

Bairstow, a mainstay in England’s limited-overs setup, was notably left out alongside senior players Moeen Ali and Chris Jordan. This decision has raised eyebrows, particularly given Bairstow’s longstanding role in England’s cricketing framework. Bairstow expressed his desire to represent England across all formats while participating in The Hundred 2024. However, his exclusion mark a significant shift in the team’s approach as newer players like Dan Mousley and Jacob Bethell received their maiden call-ups.

England’s chief selector Luke Wright’s perspective

Bairstow’s struggle to secure a spot in the national team is further compounded by the emergence of promising players such as Will Jacks and Phil Salt. Despite a designated role in the middle order, Bairstow’s performances failed to meet expectations. His recent performances in County cricket, including a fifty against Sussex and a duck in the second innings, h??ave not been enough to reverse his fortunes with the national team.

Wright remains hopeful for Bairstow’s comeback, ac??knowledging his resilience and past instances wh??ere he has defied expectations. Wright emphasized his belief in Bairstow’s ability to reclaim his place, despite the current competition.

“It’s not the case, when we spoke to him, that he’s done. We just want him back to [being] one of the best players in the world. He understands that. He doesn’t like it. One thing Jonny will do is fight back, and I hope he does and gets himself back in the team. I’m certainly not going to write Jonny off. Jonny’s countless times when people have shown them that they’re wrong, and hopefully he shows that we’re wrong as well,” Wright was quoted as saying by the BBC.
