In the dynamic landscape of modern-day cricket, the role of bowlers has undergone a remarkable evolution, with a select few transcending mere skill to attain the status of the ‘most complete bowler’. These bowling maestros, characterized by their multifaceted abilities and unwavering consistency, stand as paragons of excellence in the sport, wielding an undeniable influence on the outcome of matches across formats.

Notably, the likes of Mitchell Starc, Jasprit Bumrah, Kagiso Rabada and Trent Boult, all have proven their skills across formats and have been the trendsetter in the bo??wling a??rena. But to pick one as the most complete is indeed quite challenging.

Vernon Philander names his pick

Speaking about the same, former South African cricketing star Vernon Philander recently bestowed high praise upon Indian fast bowler Bumrah, dubbing him as the epitome of a complete bowler in contemporary cricket. Philander’s commendation comes in the wake of Bumrah’s exceptional performances in recent matches, culminating in his ascent to the summit of the ICC Rankings for Test bowlers.

In an interview with ‘PTI Bhasha’ during the SA T20 Tournament, Philander lauded Bumrah’s multifaceted bowling prowess, attributing his success to a combination of exceptional skills and enhanced consistency.

“Bumrah is the (most) complete bowler at the moment. He has got magnificent skills and he has also learnt the trade of holding a line and length and that is the reason behind his success at the Test level,” said Philander.

Stellar rise as premier bowler

Bumrah, renowned for his unorthodox action and ability to deliver under pressure, has solidified his status as one of India’s premier pace weapons across all formats. His historic nine-wicket haul during the second Test against England in Vishakapatnam propelled him to the pinnacle of Test bowling rankings, a feat never? before achieved by an Indian bowler.

Philander emphasized Bumrah’s evolution from a wicket-taking specialist to a bowler capable of maintaining line and length effectively, thereby tightening the screws on opposition batters. According to Philander, Bumrah’s repertoire includes the ability to swing the new ball, induce crucial breakthroughs, and deliver lethal yorkers with precision.

The former South African paceman highlighted Bumrah’s proficiency in employing variations and challenging batters with deceptive change-ups, qualities that are invaluable in the high-pressure environment of T20 cricket.

“Initially, he wanted to bowl wicket-taking deliveries all the time and leaked runs but now he has learnt consistency. He swings the new ball, brings the stumps into the play, and challenges the batters upfront. He is phenomenal with those change-ups and lethal yorkers and that is the skill set you want in the T20 World Cup. I feel he is going to play a massive part in the tournament and perhaps also be the best seamer,” Philander added.

The cricketing fraternity was shocked as South African Test specialist Vernon Philander called it qu?its before the series against England. Philander opened up about this abrupt end to his international career recently and called out the chaos within the Cricket South Africa (CSA) regime as the primary cause for his retirement.

Also, Philander spilled the beans regarding the? controversial selections during the semi-finals of the Cricket World Cup in 2015. In a no-holds-barred interview with Afrikaans newspaper Rapport, Philander accused of racism determining team selections during the crunch game five years back.

Philander suggested that indecisions within CSA forced him to sign a Kolpak deal with Somerset?? and quit the na??tional team during a turbulent time in their rich cricketing history.

“As a player, you get to the point where you’ve had enough. CSA’s former management only started looking after themselves, the players were the last ones they worried about. Too many things went wrong in the last while, I had to decide what is the best road ahead for me. Then I decided to retire,” Vernon commented.

“I am 35 now, with a decent career behind me, but I would have considered playing longer if not for the chaos in our cricket administration,” claimed the man with 224 Test wickets to his name.

However, it is not as bleak as it looks for South Africa as they look to amend ?the situation within the board under the directorship of their former skipper Graeme Smith. Also, the likes of Jacques Kallis and Dale Steyn have taken u??p a mentorship role for the young Proteas squad.

“There’s more credibility back now at CSA. Hopefully, we’ll see a turnaround in fortunes at the administrative level and on the playing field,?lamented the Cape Town all-rounder.

While looking back a?t the 2015 World Cup, Philander alleged that things were going on behind closed doors. Despite being injure??d, Philander, to his surprise, was selected in the eleven against New Zealand in the semi-finals at Auckland, in place of in-form Kyle Abbott.

The South African ??team management desired an unchanged lineup in the semi-finals, but went ahead with a fit-again Philander instead of Abbott, to fulfill the target of four colored players in the lineup.

“I blatantly and openly told the coach (Russell Domingo) that the best player should play. He told me: ‘You are the best player for the day, you’re playing. But they were clearly not open and honest with me and Kyle. There were definitely things going on behind closed doors,?revealed the 35-year old.

Furthermore, Philander disclosed that his friendship with Abbott was affected due to th?e selection, which might have led to the?? heart-breaking Protean defeat in the high-octane match. “Both of us took a bit of a knock because of what happened there,?concluded the South African cricketer, with 101 international caps across all formats.

Later on, Abbott signed a Kolpak deal midway through the Sri Lankan series back in 2017. A majority of the elite cricketers in South Africa have found their way to England with the Kolpak deal. This is seen as the primary reason for the Rainbow Nation st??ruggling in international cricket presently.

South Africa paceman Vernon Philander has played his last Test in Johannesburg against England and will now retire from international cricke?t.

Philander, 34, p?layed 101 matches across all three forma??ts, picking up a total of 269 wickets since making his debut with a T20I game against Ireland on June 24, 2007.

In his farewell Test, the last of the four-match series, he could not help South Africa win as the hosts lost to England by 191 runs, but the ace medium-fast bow??ler was applauded by his teammates, wife Mandy Hudson and Proteas support-staff after?? he walked back to the pavilion for the last time.

Philander had announced before the start of the series that it would be his last in international cricket. In the fourth Test at the Wanderers, he?? took two wickets in the first innings and remained wicketless in the second in which he bowled just 1.3 overs. The B?ig Vern scored 4 and 10 in both innings.

South African pacer Vernon Philander has been fined 15 percent of his match fee and handed one demerit point for his send-off to England’s Jos Buttler on day two of the fourth Test in Johannesburg.

Philander – playing his farewell Test – used inappropriate language after dismissing Buttler at the Wanderers on Saturday.

Philander’s demerit point will prove irrelevant with the 34-year-old retiring from Test cricket after this match, having taken 224 wickets in 64 games since making his debut against Australia in 2011.

Buttler and Philander have jousted in an acrimonious relationship throughout the series, with the England wicket?keeper having received a sanction for swearing at Philander in the second Test at Cape Town.

The ICC said in a statement: “The incident occurred in the 85th over of England’s innings on Saturday when Philander used inappropriate language after dismissing Jos Buttler, which could have provoked an aggressive response from the batsman.

“Philander admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees and, as such, there was no need for a formal hearing.”

England wicket-??keeper Jos Buttler has finally apologized for hurling abuses at Vernon Philander during the final day of the Cape Town Test aga??inst South Africa.

Buttler was caught by the stump-mic when he called Philander a “F***ing Knobhead.” However, the wicket-keeper has questioned whether television viewers should have access to the audio from stump microphones.

Buttler was fined 15% of his match fee and received one demerit point by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for breaching ICC’s code of conduct for players, which relates to “use of an audible obscenity during an international match.”

“I fully understand that as role models, we have a duty to behave in a certain way. I would like to apologize and understand that is not the way to behave. I take the slap on the wrist. It was the heat of the moment and a bit of red mist. But it is all done and can now be swept under the carpet so we can move on,” said Buttler.

Buttler also said that in Test cricket, emotions run high, and for players, these things don’t mean anything, but for the viewers, it goes out as a bad message.

“It is a tough one, we understand that it adds to the viewer experience to have stump mics to hear a bit of what goes on. But I think the players like the thinking of what happens on the field, stays on the field and isn’t heard necessarily by everyone at home,” added Buttler.

“It is easy to say vocal is the way to do things, but your actions also speak loud as well. One of the good things in that last game was the way we hunted as a team. We have a number of young guys under the age of 24 in the side, and they were fantastic at creating energy around the bat and putting pressure on the opposition. The two games have played in a great spirit… They have been hard-fought, and the series is set up really well at 1-1,” Buttler added further.

England won the second Test in Cape Town by 189-runs to level the four-match ser??ies 1-1.

The third Test will start from January 16 onwards at St George’s Park in Port Elizabeth.

The International Cricket Council (ICC), on Thursday, announced that England’s wicket-keeper Jos Buttler had been fined 15% of his match fee.

Buttler also received one demerit point for his foul-mouthed behavior with South Africa’s Vernon Philander during the second Test at Newlands on Tuesday (Jan 07).

On the final day of the Cape Town Test between England?? and South Africa, Buttler was captured by the stump-mic using obscene language against Philander.

The incident took place when English skipper Joe Root threw the ball towards Buttler, but Philander remained unmoved and got in the wicketkeeper’s way. At this, Buttler got annoyed and called Phillander a f***ing k***head.

England’s wicket-keeper was found guilty of a breach of the ICC’s Code of Conduct for players, specifically the “use of an audible obscenity during an international cricket match.”

“Buttler admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Andy Pycroft of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees and, as such, there was no need for a formal hearing,” as per ICC’s media release.

England went on to win the game on the fifth day by a margin of 189-runs to level the four-match series 1-1. The next match will take place from January 16-20 at St George’s Park, Port Elizabeth.

England’s wicketkeeper Jos Buttler could land in trouble after being caught using foul language against Vernon Philander on the stump mic during Day 5 of the Cape Town Test.

The incident happened after Philander drove a ball towards mid-off to Joe Root. The England skipper threw the ball back to Buttler, but Philander remained unmoved and got in Buttler’s way as he was unable to collect the ball.

Soon after, the microphone attached to stumps picked Buttler saying ‘F***ing k***head’ to Philander. The veteran bowler starred back, but he didn’t say anything.

South Africa pacer Dale Steyn reacte??d to the incident on Twitter.

“Well, that was loud and clear,” tweeted Steyn.

Indian commentator Harsha Bhogle also reacted to the cuss words used by Buttler and wrote, “What a pity.”

Meanwhile, Kevin Pietersen has come out in defense of Buttl?er. The former England cricketer asked people to leave the English wicketkeeper alone.

“LOTS having a go at @josbuttler here! LEAVE HIM ALONE! This is Test Cricket, and believe me, this is nothing compared to lots that goes on, on the field. Series is alive big time! END OF!,” tweeted Pietersen.

However, Sky Sports’ commentator Michael Atherton did apologize seconds after the incident.

In the match, England defeated South Africa by 189 runs and leveled the four-Test series 1-1.
