The United States of America (USA) cricket team has unveiled their ODI squad for the upcoming World Cup League 2 (WCL-2) tri-series, set to begin on Friday. The selection committee has decided to stick with the same squad that successfully toured Namibia in September for the WCL-2 games. However, a notable exclusion from the squad is star batter Aaron Jones.

Aaron Jones dropped but not due to form or fitness

Notably, Jonesomission from the squad was not due to concerns about his form or fitness. Instead, the decision stems from his choice to prioritize playing in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) over representing the national team.

Jones chose to skip the Namibia tour with the USA in favor of fulfilling his contract with the St. Lucia Kings in the CPL. This decision reportedly did not sit well with USA Cricket’s selection committee and management, particularly as it came despite ‘warningsâ€?from the cricket board.

While Jones was able to play in the CPL as a local player without needing a ‘No Objection Certificate’ (NOC) from USA Cricket, the circumstances around his absence from the national team appear to have led to his exclusion.

Strong performances in Jones’ absence influenced decision

During the Namibia tour, the USA team thrived without Jones, remaining unbeaten across their four ODI games. The success of the squad in his absence may have strengthened the selectors’ resolve to make the bold call of dropping Jones. Although he was later recalled for the T20I series, thanks to his remarkable performance in the CPL final, Jones struggled during the Nepal T20I series last week, increasing the likelihood that his spot in the T20I team may also be under threat.

USA squad for WCL-2 Tri-series

Monank Patel (captain), Smit Patel, Sai Teja?? Mukkamalla, Milind Kumar, Shayan Jahangir, Andries Gous, Harmeet Singh, Nosthush Kenjige, Saurabh Netravalkar, Juanoy Drysdale, Utkarsh Srivastava, Jasdeep Singh, Shadley Van Schalkwyk, Yasir Mohammad, Sushant Modani

The 8th edition of the ICC T20 World Cup took place in 2022 in Australia, and England emerged victorious by defeating Pakistan ??in the final. The forthcoming 9th edition of the T20 World Cup is scheduled to be held in 2024, and it will be jointly hosted by West Indies and the USA. This decision is aimed at ??promoting cricket in these regions and expanding the global reach of the tournament.

As per ESPNCricinfo reports, the T20 World Cup 2024 is expected to begin on June 4 next year. The tournament will span a d??uration of 25 days, culminating with the final match scheduled for June 30, 2024.

ESPNCricinfo, further stated that the International Cricket Council (ICC) has c??onducted inspections of several shortlisted venues in the USA for the T20 World ??Cup 2024. The venues that were inspected include Lauderhill in Florida, Grand Prairie stadium in Dallas, Church Street Park in Morrisville, and Van Cortlandt Park in New York.

Lauderhill in Florida will be hosting the last two T20I matches between West Indies and India of the ongoing T20I series. However, the other stadiums in the USA, namely those in Dallas, Morrisville and New York, are yet to receive international venue sta?tus. This means that they have not been? officially approved to host matches during the tournament.

As of now, the inaugural season of Major League Cricket (MLC), which is a new professional T20 league in the USA, has hosted the T20 games in two venues: Morrisville’s Church Street Park and Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas. These venues are currently being used for domestic cricket matches, but they are yet to be granted the status to host international matches, such as those in the T20 World Cup.

T20 World Cup 2024 Teams

The ninth edition of ??T20 World Cup will feature a revamped format, different from the previous editions. In this tournament, a total of twenty teams will participate, and they will be divided into four groups for the group stage.

During the group stage, the t??eams in each group will compete against each other in a round-robin forma?t, playing a set number of matches. At the end of the group stage, the top two teams from each group will advance to the Super Eight stage.

In the Super Eight stage, the eight qualifying teams will be further split i??nto two groups, wit??h four teams in each group. These two groups will also play a round-robin format, with each team facing the other teams in their group.

After the comp?letion of the Super Eight stage, the top two teams from each group will qualify for the semi-finals. The winners of the two semi-final matches will progress to the Grand Final, where they will compete for the prestigious T20 World Cup title.

T20 World Cup 2024 Format

The ninth T20 World Cup will feature a total of ten teams. The hosts, West Indies and the USA have automatically qualified to participate in the main event. Additionally, the top eight teams from the previous edition of the T20 World Cup in 2022 have also secured their spots in the tournament. These eight teams include India, Pakistan, New Zealand, Australia, England, South Africa, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan.

Furthermore, two teams, Bangladesh and Ireland, have qualified for the tournament based on their T20I rankings. Scotland and Papua New Guinea have also made it to the event thanks to their performance in the re?gional qualifiers.

However, there are still five slots to be filled in the tournament. These slots will be determined through region??al qualifiers in the Americas, Africa and Asia regions. One team from the Am?ericas, two teams from Africa, and two teams from Asia will secure their places in the T20 World Cup through these qualifiers.

The cricket culture in the United States of America (UAE) is expanding day-by-day, and recently, a major deal has made sure that the future of the fascinating spor??t in the coun?try is pretty bright.

The USA Cricket has revealed that its commercial T20 franchise league partner, American Cricket Enterprises (ACE), has signed a 15-year lease to obtain AirHogs Stadium a minor league baseball and soccer ground located at Dallas in Texas.

The famous North Texas city is ready to get the status of Home of American cricket. The co-founder of ACE, Sameer Mehta, said that the desire for the venue is to host a Major League Cricket (MLC) – which aims to make cricket a leading sport in the country by creating a world-class national Twenty20 tournament.

Speaking about the epic ground, the $20 million stadia opened in 2008 and h?oused? the Texas AirHogs (a minor league baseball team) for the last 13 seasons. However, due to COVID-19 pandemic, the AirHogs shut down in the summer of 2020.

ACE is now planning to spend at least $10 million to renovate the facility into a cricket-exclusive ODI-accredited turf wicket venue. It is expected to open by the summer of 2022.

“This is a watershed moment for us. We’re pretty excited. We’re going to put Grand Prairie on the global map because hopefully when we get World Cups and international events, this is going to be one of the key stadiums we’re playing matches in,” said USA Cricket chairman Paraag Marathe as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

“The flagship where we’re going to be first putting up our flag and announcing USA Cricket to the rest of the world is going to be right here in Grand Prairie,” Paraag added.

Excited to bring cricket to Texas: Grand Prairie Mayor

The concerned stadium will be transformed into an 8,000-seat venue and become the centrepiece to host major international cricket events. It is expected to co-host a T20 World Cup with the West Indies in the next decade.

Grand Prairie Mayor Ron Jensen showed excitement about bringing cricket into Texas. He ??said that this sport is quite popular and growing rapidly, just like soccer 40 years ago.

“We are very excited about this opportunity to bring cricket to Texas by converting our minor league baseball stadium. Cricket is the second most popular sport in the world behind soccer, with a large and growing audience in the states. It reminded me of 40 years ago when soccer made a big splash in the United States,” said Jensen as quoted by Forbes.
