This win significantly bolste?red their chances of advancing to the Super 8 stage of the tournament.

Rovman Powell praises team’s performance

Following the match, West Indies skipper Rovman Powell expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance and highlighted their improvement from the previous game. He noted that the team was somewhat lackluster in their opening match, operating at only 60 percent capacity due to some rustiness. However, in this game, they stepped up their performance to around 70-80 percent.

Powell praised Hosein for his exceptional bowling, underscoring why he is ranked number three in the format, and acknowledged his consistency against top teams. Powell emphasized the importance of playing well in challenging conditions and appreciated the support of the Guyanese crowd, which added to the team’s motivation and energy.

“We talk about improving. We were a little flat in the first game. We had some rust in the first game. We were 60 percent in the first game. Now, we are operating at 70-80 percent. Credit to Akeal, no wonder why he is the number 3 ranked bowler in this format. He has done the same against top sides as well. He bowled wicket to wicket and did his job. Cricket isn’t that easy here and teams need to play well. The Guyanese crowd have been superb,” said Powell at the post-match presentation.

A nail-biting low-scoring thriller unfolded at the Providence Stadium in Guyana as Uganda edged past Papua New Guinea by 3 wickets in Match 9 of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

This was Uganda’s first-ever win in the mega ICC tournament.

Papua New Guinea struggles with the bat

Uganda elected to bowl first and their decision proved to be a good one. Papua New Guinea batters struggled against the Ugandan bowling attack, with none of them managing to score a significant total. Only Lega Siaka (12), Hiri Hiri (15) and Kiplin Doriga (12) re??ached double digits as the entire team was bund??led out for a meager 77 runs in 19.1 overs.

Frank Nsubuga was the pick of the Ugandan bowlers, claiming two w??ickets for ju??st 4 runs.

Uganda chases down target with 10 balls to spare

Chasing a modest target, Uganda’s start was shaky as they lost their top three batsmen cheaply. However, a fighting knock from Riazat Ali Shah (33 runs off 56 balls) steadied the ship. Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, Uganda kept chipping away at the target. Juma Miyagi (13) provided valuable support to Shah, and with some late hitting, Uganda eventually chased down the target with ten balls to spare, finishing on 78/7 in 18.2 overs.

Alei Nao (2/16) and Norman Vanua (2/19) were the most successful bowlers for PNG, but their efforts were not enough ?to secure victory.

For his crucial knock that a??nchored the chase, Riazat?? Ali Shah was deservedly awarded the Player of the Match award.
