Annabel Sutherland grabbed the limelight with a magnificent century in the third and final Women’s ODI between Australia and India at the WACA Ground in Perth. With Australia ??in a precarious position ?at 78/4, Sutherland stepped up to rescue her side, scoring a brilliant ton to guide the hosts to a commanding total of 298/6.

A spectacular finish to an incredible knock of Annabel Sutherland

The ball was pitched full around leg stump, and Sutherland swung hard, sending it sailing over midwicket. As she raised her arms in celebration, the Australian crowd erupted, witnessing a memorable finish to a gritty knock in the searing Perth heat.

Sutherland’s support crew: Ashleigh Gardner and Tahlia McGrath

Their contributions helped Australia post a formidable total, transforming their position from 78-4 to?? a competitive 298-6 by the end of the innings.

Arundhati Reddy’s brilliant spell for India

While Australia fought back, India’s Arundhati Reddy was the standout bowler of the match. She wreaked havoc with the ball, taking four wickets an?d bowling an exceptional spell of 8 overs. In those 8 overs, Reddy conceded only 18 runs, picking up two maidens and sending Australia into disarray. Her efforts stood in stark contrast to the rest of the Indian bowlers, who struggled to contain the Aussie batters, as Australia scored freely in the latter stages.

The third ODI of the India Women’s tour of Australia, played at the iconic WACA, Perth, kicked off with high stakes and expectations. India, trailing in the series, opted to bowl, a strategic decision aimed at leveraging the conditions to unsettle Australia’s formidable batting lineup. The gamble soon paid dividends as Arundhati Reddy delivered a stunning spell, rattling the hosts with earl?y wickets.

Arundhati Reddy’s masterful delivery: Georgia Voll dismissed

The Indian bowlers initially struggled to break the solid 50-run opening stand between Georgia Voll and Phoebe Litchfield. Voll, show??casing her talent with an elegant 26 off 30 balls, seemed poised for a big score. However, Arundhati Reddy turned the game on its head with a moment of brilliance.

Bowling from over the wicket, Reddy unleashed a perfectly pitched good-length delivery that swung sharply back into Voll. Caught on the back foot, Voll misjudged the line, leaving a gap between bat ?and pad. The ball z??ipped through the defenses, crashing into the stumps. The dismissal, equal parts skill and precision, brought India roaring back into the contest. Voll’s knock, which included four boundaries, ended just as she looked ready to accelerate.

Phoebe Litchfield and Ellyse Perry falls in quick succession

Following the dismissal of Voll for 26, caught by Richa Ghosh off Reddy, Australia’s innings began to unravel. Phoebe Litchfield, who had earlier looked in good touch, fell next for 25 runs, edging a delivery from Reddy behind the stumps. The pressure intensified as Ellyse Perry struggled to settle at the crease, and her departure for just 4 runs off 14 balls added to Australia’s woes, reducing them to 84/4 in just 20 overs.

With wickets falling at regular intervals, India’s bowlers, led by Reddy and Titas Sadhu, maintained tight lines, preventing any significant partnerships from forming. Despite the setbacks, Annabel Sutherland and Ashleigh Gardener, trying to stabilize the innings amidst the mounting pressure. The Indian fielding side, sharp and alert, kept the Australian batters on edge, further contributing to the growing sense of urgenc?y for the hosts.

After electing to bat first, India’s decision backfired as the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side crumbled under pressure in the 1st ODI, managing a mere 100 runs in their innings. Australia’s Megan Schutt emerged as the standout performer, claiming a brilliant five-wicket haul to spearhead the hosts’ dominant display at the Allan Border Field in Brisbane.

Megan Schutt’s early strikes dent India

India’s innings suffered an early blow when Megan Schutt, in red-hot form, struck in the third over to dismiss Smriti Mandhana for 8. Mandhana, who had started confidently with two exquisite boundaries, edged a sharp outswinger to the wicketkeeper. Schutt continued her fiery spell, removing Priya Punia for 3, leaving India reeling at 10/2. Harleen Deol tried to counterattack, displaying glimpses of promise with some well-timed shots, but her 19-run cameo ended when she was caught at mid-off off Ashleigh Gardner’s delivery. At 42/3, the Indian inni?ngs was in deep trouble.

Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues try to stabilize

Skipper Harmanpreet attempted to stabilize the innings alongside Jemimah Rodrigues. Kaur’s measured approach included two boundaries but was undone by a sharp inswinging delivery from Annabel Sutherland, resulting in an LBW dismissal after a failed DRS review. Rodrigues, on the other hand, tried to anchor the innings with a cautious 23 off 42 balls. However, her dismissal to Kim Garth’s precise line and length marked t??he beginning of a rapid decline.

Lower order crumbles under pressure: India all out for 100

India’s lower order crumbled under the pressure of Australia’s spinners and pacers. Richa Ghosh attempted to build a partnership but her dismissal for 14 left India reeling at 92/6. Deepti Sharma and Saima Thakor could not contribute significantly, while Schutt’s fiery spell decimated the tail, claiming two wickets in quick succession to complete her five-wicket haul. Alana King added to India’s woes by dismissing Titas Sadhu for just 2. The innings ended at a paltry total of 100, with Priya Mishra bowled for a duck by Schutt.

Here’s how fans reacted

Schutt’s spell of destruction for Australia

Schutt was the standout bowler, delivering a scintillating spell of 6.2 overs, conceding just 19 runs while taking five wickets. Her ability to extract movement both ways and maintain a consistent line made her unplayable. Garth and Ashleigh Gardner provided excellent suppor??t, picking up one wicket each, while Sutherland and King chipped in with crucial breakthroughs. The Australian bowling unit’s collective effort ensured they maintained control throughout the innings.

A key turning point was the dismissal of Harmanpreet in the 19th over. The captain??’s wicket not only halted India’s momentum but also exposed the lower order to Australia’s relentless bowling attack. Despite the DRS review, the umpire’s call was upheld, further denting India’s hopes of posting a competitive total.

The three-match ODI series between Australia and India is set to begin on December 5. The opening match is scheduled to take place at the Allan Border Field in Brisbane. This series forms a crucial part of the ongoing ICC Women’s ODI Championship 2022-2025 and offers a exciting contest between two cricketing pow??erhouses.

Build-up to the series between Australia and India

India, under the leadership of Harmanpreet Kaur, will enter the series fresh off a confidence-boosting 2-1 victory against New Zealand at home in October. The Indian side will aim to extend their winning momentum after a disappointing run in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, where they exited in ??the group stage, losing to Australia.

For hosts Australia, this series will mark their return to bilateral cricket after their semi-final loss to South Africa in the same T20 World Cup. It’s a rare blemish for the world champions, who missed the final for only the second time in the tournament’s nine-season history. With new players stepping up, Australia looks to reassert their dominance in the 50-over format.

Key insights into past encounters

India’s last ODI victory against Australia came in 2021, and since then, they have struggled to overcome the Australian juggernaut. The teams last faced each other in the ODI format during Australia’s tour of India in 2023-24, where Australia whitewashed India 3-0, showcasing their unmatched depth and consistency. However, India will look to end this winless streak as they prepare for the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025, which they will host.

Team India’s squad: Changes and arrival

The Indian squad features a mix of experienced players and promising young talent. Smriti Mandhana, known for her elegant batting, will continue to serve as deputy to skipper Harmanpreet. Other key players include Deepti Sharma, an all-rounder with a knack for breakthroughs, and Jemimah Rodrigues, whose consist??ency in the middle order is crucial.

Richa Ghosh, the dynamic wicketkeeper-batter, returns to the side after missing the New Zealand series due to academic commitments. However, India will miss the services of Pooja Vastrakar, who has been rested, and Dayalan Hemalatha, who was not included in the squad. Youngsters like Titas Sadhu and Minnu Mani have earned their spots after impressi?ve domestic performances.

Full squad: Harmanpreet Kaur (c), Smriti Mandhana??, Priya Punia, Jemimah Rodrigues, Harleen Deol, Yastika Bhatia (WK), Richa Ghosh (WK), Tejal Hasabnis, Deepti Sharma, Minnu Mani, Priya Mishra, Radha Yadav, Titas Sadhu, Arundhati Reddy, Renuka Singh Thakur, Saima ??Thakor

Australia’s squad: Absence of Alyssa Healy

Australia will be without their regular captain, Alyssa Healy, who is recovering from a knee injury sustained during the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2024. In her absence, the formidable all-rounder Tahlia McGrath will lead the side, with Ashleigh Gardner as her deputy. The squad sees the inclusion of Georgia Voll, who could potentially open the innings alongside Phoebe Litchfield, promising an exciting start for the hosts. Beth Mooney will take over wicketkeeping duties, while experienced players like Gardner and ??McGrath are expected to anchor both batting and bowling departments.

Complete squad: Tahlia McGrath (c), Darcie B??rown, Ashleigh Gardner, Kim Garth, Alana King, Phoebe Litchfield, Sophie Molineux, Beth Mooney, Ellyse Perry, Megan Schutt, Annabel Suth??erland, Georgia Wareham, Georgia Voll

ICC Women’s ODI Championship 2022-25

Australia currently tops the championship table with 13 wins from 18 matche?s, having already secured qualification for the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup. India, ranked third with 12 wins from 15 matches, ha??s also qualified as the host nation. Despite this, the series holds immense value as both teams look to fine-tune their strategies ahead of the marquee event.
