South Africa have officially named their squads for the upcoming white-ball series against Ireland, to be played in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from September 27. The series will include both T20I and ODI formats, with Aiden Markram taking on the role of captain for the T20I side and veteran Temba Bavuma leading the ODI team.? This series serves as a crucial opportunity for South Africa to test new talent and expand their player pool ahead of major international tournaments.

Key players rested

In a calculated move, several top players will be absent from this tour. Notable names such as Kagiso Rabada, Keshav Maharaj, Anrich Nortje, Marco Jansen, Tabraiz Shamsi, Gerald Coetzee, David Miller, and Heinrich Klaasen have been rested. This decision aligns with the team’s approach to broaden their talent pool and provide exposure to emerging players as they gear up for future international tournaments.

First ODI call-up for Jason Smith

All-rounder Jason Smith, who made his T20I debut recently against the West Indies, has earned his maiden ODI call-up. Additionally, leg-spinner Nqabayomzi Peter, who missed the Caribbean to??ur due to a shoulder in??jury, returns to the squad.

Lungi Ngidi returns to bolster the bowling attack

Fast bowler Lungi Ngidi is set to make his comeback after recovering from a right calf injury suffered during the West Indies tour. However, Quinton de Kock, who has yet to announce his T20I retirement, is not part of the squad. Kwena Maphaka, who debute?d against the West Indies, has also been left out.

Expanding the player pool for future tournaments

South Africa’s white-ball coach, Rob Walter, highlighted the importance of providing opportunities to younger players. He further emph??asized the team’s strategy of expanding their player pool in preparation for major ICC tournaments in the near future, with a particular focus on the 2027 50-over World Cup.

“We have decided to give opportunities to some of the fringe players as well as those who have impressed in recent weeks and months. This has been a deliberate move from management, in line with our goal of building a wider pool of players to choose from, as we prepare for the major ICC tournaments taking place over the next 18 months, with a long-term view on the 50-over World Cup in 2027,” said Walter, in a statement.

Australia have revealed their 15-member squad for the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, which will take place in the UAE this October. The event was originally set to be held in Bangladesh, but political unrest in the region prompted the International Cricket Council (ICC) to shift the tournament to the UAE.

Surprising omission: No place for Jess Jonassen

In a notable exclusion, experienced left-arm spinner Jess Jonassen has been left out of the squad. Jonassen has not represented Australia in T20Is since the home series against the West Indies in 2023, and her last international appearance was the Test match against India at Wankhede. Despite this, she had an outstanding season in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2023, where she finished as Brisbane Heat’s highest wicket-taker with 24 wickets and the second overall in the tournament. Jonassen was also joint third highest wicket-taker in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024, claiming 11 wickets.

“Jess Jonassen is again unlucky to miss out, but we’ve been impressed with the way she’s bounced back, and we’ll continue to monitor her form ahead of the home summer,” said Shawn Flegler, Cricket Australia’s Head of Performance (Women’s Cricket) and National Selector, in an official statement.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) unveiled the squad for Team India’s upcoming tour of Sri Lanka on Thursday. The series will start with three T20Is i??n Pallekele on July 27, 28, and 30, followed by three ODIs in Colombo on August 2, 4, and 7.

Suryakumar Yadav named T20I captain

Suryakumar Yadav has been appointed as India’s new T20I captain, taking over from Rohit Sharma, who retired from T20Is after leading India to victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup. Rationale behind Suryakumar’s selection over Hardik Pandya

The decision is also seen as a step towards preparing for the next T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka in 2026.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli included in ODI squad

Rohit and Virat Kohli have been named in the ODI squad for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka, one of two 50-over series scheduled before the 202?5 Champions Trophy. Both players had taken a break to spend time with their families following the T20 World Cup celebration in Mumbai on July?? 4. Despite rumors they might skip the Sri Lanka tour, they will now join the 15-man squad.

Nitish Kumar Reddy‘s anticipated international debut has been postponed due to an injury, ruling him out of India’s T20I series against Zimbabwe. While the BCCI has not detailed the nature of Reddy’s injury, reports suggest that he is sidelined due to a hernia.

Nitish Reddy’s spectacular numbers in IPL 2024

Reddy’s call-up to the Indian squad came after a standout Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). He accumulated 303 runs with a strike rate of 142.92 and also bowled 13.1 overs, taking three wickets. Over the past year, Reddy has been monitored by the National Cricket Academy (NCA) as part of the BCCI’s development program for young talents.

Shivam Dube, currently part of India’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad, will replace Reddy. Although Dube’s performance in the ongoing global event has been modest, with 106 runs in six matches at a strike rate of 107.07 and no wickets, he had an excellent IPL 2024 season.

Dube, who typically bats in the middle order, was a key player for Chennai Super Kings (CSK), scoring 396 runs in 14 matches with a strike rate of 162.29, making him the second-highest run-scorer for CSK behind captain Ruturaj Gaikwad.

Notably, Team India are set to play five T20Is against Zimbabwe in Harare, starting on July 6. In the absence of senior players, Shubman Gill will captain the squad, which includes newcomers Abhishek Sharma, Riyan Parag, and Tushar Deshpande.
