The young South African sensation Dewald Brevis has emerged as a major batting force in the current season of the SA20 2025. A glimpse of his unmatched power and hitting ability came during the Qualifier 1 against Paarl Royals when he hit the ball out of the park against ace spinner Mujeeb-Ur-Rahman and shifted momentum to play a crucial innings for his side in an all-important clash at the St. George’s Park.

Dewald Brevis smashes a towering six

The incident unfolded on the 4th ball of the 18th over, a moment that left fans on the edge of their seats. Royals spinner Mujeeb, known for his deceptive spin, failed to stem the barrage of sixes that had been raining down from Brevis. As Mujeeb delivered a full-length delivery, he seemed to underestimate the sheer power and precision of the batter. With a powerful swing of the bat, Brevis launched the ball high into the sky, sending it sailing over the boundary line with emphatic force.

The crowd erupted in applause as the ball flew out of the park, leaving Mujeeb with no choice but to watch his attempt fall short. The over was turning into a nightmare for the Royals, as the young batter displayed his remarkable strength and ability under pressure. Brevis, with his aggressive stance, was in full control, sending another statement to the opposition that he was a force to be reckoned with.

Domination from MI Cape Town

Royals invited MI Cape Town to bat first hoping that a set target would increase their chances of reaching the finals of the league. However, on the contrary, Cape Town got off to a solid start due to a remarkable partnership between openers Ryan Rickelton and Rassie van der Dussen. The two batters added 87 runs between them and provided the team a platform to reach a gigantic total in the all-important clash.

After the openers were dismissed by Dunith Wellalage and Dayyaan Galiem respectively, it was time for the middle order batters to carry on the momentum and hit some powerful strokes. Brevis did exactly that during his unbeatable knock of 44 runs off 30 balls in which he sent the ball out of the park 4 times. The Royals bowling unit had no answer to the incoming onslaught from Brevis. A team effort from the Cape Town enabled them to reach a competitive total of 199/4 in 20 overs.

After they had set a grand total against Royals, it was time for the bowling unit to display their prowess and sail their team through their maiden final in the league. A disciplined and determined bowling effort from Cape Town bowlers bowled out Royals on just 160 runs thus ensuring a win for the team in blue and golden shades by 39 runs.

Trent Boult, Kagiso Rabada, skipper Rashid Khan and Corbin Bosch all contributed with the ball and clinched 2 Royals?wickets respectively. With this majestic win over Royals, Cape Town have secured a place in the final of the competition while Royals have to take their chances in a do-or-die clash in Qualifier 2.

The Qualifier 1 of the SA20 2025 saw an intense contest between MI Cape Town and Paarl Royals at the St. George’s Park in which Cape Town triumphed over the Royals and entered the final of the league for the first time in their history. The Royals after suffering a defeat will now have to play a do-or-die Qualifier 2 against the winner of the eliminator match between Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Joburg Super Kings.

A determined effort from Cape Town with the bat

Royals made a decision to bowl first after winning the toss and saw their bowlers put on an average display from the Cape Town batting unit. Like most of the season, Cape Town had a solid start with the bat, Ryan Rickelton and Rassie van der Dussen provided their team a remarkable base to reach a competitive total in the match. Rickelton, in particular, led the team from the front and played an emphatic knock of 44 runs off 27 balls with 4 boundaries and 2 towering sixes. Rickelton’s innings kept the run rate on the high and added pressure on Royals to get the breakthrough as early as possible.

Cape Town’s middle and lower order too dominated the course of the play and stitched a total of 199/4 in 20 overs. Notable contributions from Dewald Brevis, Delano Potgieter and George Linde paved the way for a fine day for Cape Town with the bat and further corner the Royals through the added scoreboard pressure to chase down the total.

Disappointment for Royals

For the Royals, the team’s concerns regarding plan execution and building momentum which emerged during the last 2 games of the season continued in the qualifier as well. While Royals’ bowling unit gave away runs and allowed Cape Town to reach a competitive total, their batters could not withstand the incoming onslaught from Cape Town bowlers. The run-chase went as a show of desperation and mediocrity from the Royals batters as they threw their wickets away quickly one after the other.
Royals skipper David Miller and wicket-keeper batter Dinesh Karthik were the only two batters which tried to hold on some hope for their side and put runs on the board. But, even these two batters could not sail their team through and give their wickets away in hours of need. Ultimately, Royals were bowled out on 160 runs in 19.4 overs as Cape Town won the match by 39 runs.

Jimmy Neesham delivered an incredible moment of brilliance on the field in the SA20 2025, executing a stunning one-handed catch to send Liam Dawson back to the pavilion.

Jimmy Neesham’s spectacular one-handed catch in the SA20 2025

Facing a short-of-a-length delivery from Eathan Bosch in the last over, Dawson attempted a powerful shot, but the ball came off the outside part of his bat, flying wide of extra cover. Neesham, stationed in the infield, moved swiftly to his right. Anticipating the trajectory perfectly, he dove full stretch, extending his right arm. In an extraordinary display of athleticism and hand-eye coordination, he plucked the ball mid-air while diving forward, completing one of the most breathtaking catches of the match. Dawson, who was looking dangerous with a quickfire 25 off 11 balls, had to depart, thanks to Neesham’s heroics. This dismissal not only showcased Neesham’s exceptional fielding skills but also gave Bosch his third wicket, tilting the momentum firmly in favour of the bowling side.

Captain Aiden Markram leads Sunrisers Eastern Cape to victory over Pretoria Capitals

Sunrisers Eastern Cape defeated Pretoria Capitals by 52 runs in the 17th match of the SA20, held at St. George’s Park, Gqeberha, on January 22. Sunrisers captain Aiden Markram was the standout performer, earning the Player of the Match award for his unbeaten 68 off 55 balls.

Eastern Cape faced early trouble after losing three quick wickets within the powerplay, managing just 27 runs in the first six overs. Markram anchored the innings with a calm and composed approach, stitching together vital partnerships with Marco Jansen (24) and Dawson (25). Despite wickets tumbling around him, Markram ensured Eastern Cape reached a defendable total. Dawson’s late flourish lifted the team to 149/7, as Bosch (3/33) and Will Jacks (2/18) troubled the middle order.

The Capitals faltered early in their chase, losing four wickets for just 34 runs during the powerplay. Jansen was unplayable upfront, removing key batters, including Jacks (0) and Rahmanullah Gurbaz (7). Though Marques Ackerman (25) and Keagan Lion-Cachet (28) attempted a brief recovery, Dawson and Jansen kept the pressure on. The Capitals’ lower order failed to offer resistance, and the team was bundled out for just 97 in 16.3 overs.

The second Test between South Africa and Sri Lanka at St George’s Park in Gqeberha has been a thrilling contest, but it was Kyle Verreynne’s extraordinary one-handed catch that became the highlight of Day 4. As the match unfolded with both teams vying for crucial World Test Championship (WTC) points, Verreynne’s moment of brilliance captivated fans and players alike, showcasing the magic that can happen in cricket.

Kyle Verreynne’s grabs an outstanding catch to dismiss in-form Kamindu Mendis

The action reached its peak on the first ball of the 34th over when Keshav Maharaj bowled a delivery that spun sharply outside off. Kamindu Mendis, who was batting on 35, attempted to defend but ended up edging the ball onto his pad. In a split second, the ball popped up, seemingly suspended in time. Verreynne, quick as a flash, lunged forward and executed a full-stretch dive, snatching the ball with one hand just inches from the ground. This breathtaking catch not only dismissed Mendis but also electrified the crowd and left commentators in awe.

Here’s the video:

Verreynne’s impact beyond the catch

Verreynne’s performance throughout the match has been nothing short of exceptional. Taking over the wicket keeping duties from Ryan Rickelton, he scored a magnificent 105* in South Africa’s first innings, anchoring their total effectively. His dual role as both a batter and keeper has proven vital for the Proteas, especially given the pressure of replacing an established player. The catch against Sri Lanka only solidified his position as a key player in this series.

Verreynne’s ability to perform under pressure is commendable. After his century, he expressed his delight at achieving this milestone at home, emphasizing how significant it was for him personally. His contributions with both bat and gloves have been instrumental in South Africa’s quest for victory in this test match.

Sri Lanka’s challenging chase on Day 5

As Day 4 concluded, Sri Lanka found themselves at 202/5, needing 143 runs to secure a win on Day 5. With captain Dhananjaya de Silva and Kusal Mendis both unbeaten on 39, they formed a crucial partnership that offered hope to their side. However, chasing down a target of 348 runs at St George’s Park is no easy feat; historically, successful chases at this venue have been rare. The pressure is mounting as both teams understand the stakes involved in this match – victory could significantly impact their standings in the World Test Championship.

South Africa will be eager to capitalize on their momentum from Day 4. A quick breakthrough could unravel Sri Lanka’s batting order and secure a series victory for the Proteas. The final day promises to be filled with excitement as both teams fight for crucial points and pride.

The second Test between South Africa and Sri Lanka has reached a tantalizing climax, with both sides vying for a decisive outcome. Chasing an imposing target of 348, Sri Lanka ended Day 4 at 205/5, requiring another 143 runs to achieve a historic victory. Meanwhile, South Africa stands just five wickets away from sealing a commanding 2-0 series triumph.

Dhananjaya de Silva and Kusal Mendis hold Sri Lanka’s fort

Sri Lanka’s fading hopes were reignited by an unbeaten 83-run partnership between skipper Dhananjaya de Silva and Kusal Mendis, both resolute on 39. The pair displayed immense determination and urgency, maintaining a brisk run rate exceeding four an over. Yet, the scale of their task is immense. The highest successful chase at this venue, 271/8 by Australia in 1997, underscores the enormity of the challenge. With Sri Lanka’s lower order comprising bowlers, the sixth-wicket stand represents the visitors’ last credible resistance. The team’s survival and success hinge on this duo navigating the morning session on Day 5.

South Africa’s bowlers deliver under pressure

South Africa’s attack struck crucial blows to stymie Sri Lanka’s progress. Kagiso Rabada’s opening spell set the tone, dismissing skipper Dimuth Karunaratne lbw for just 1, marking the fourth time Rabada has removed him in the series. Pathum Nissanka followed soon after, edging a wide delivery from Dane Paterson for 18. Middle-order batters Dinesh Chandimal (29) and Angelo Mathews (32) offered fleeting resistance, adding 53 runs for the fourth wicket. However, the introduction of Keshav Maharaj proved pivotal. The left-arm spinner accounted for both Mathews and Kamindu Mendis (35), leaving Sri Lanka teetering at 122/5.

Despite their middle-order struggles, captain Temba Bavuma steadied the innings with a resilient 66, his 24th Test fifty. Neverthless, Bavuma’s dismissal, along with a run-out of Tristan Stubbs for 47, contributed to South Africa’s slide. The last-wicket stand between Maharaj and Paterson added 27 invaluable runs, stretching their lead to 348.

Sri Lanka’s pursuit of 348 would shatter the venue’s fourth-innings record. Their previous highest chase here, 197/2 in 2019, featured a masterful unbeaten 84 by Mendis. A repeat performance, albeit under far tougher circumstances, is now critical for Sri Lanka’s survival.
