Sri Lanka Women commenced their Women’s Asia Cup 2024 campaign with an emphatic seven-wicket victory over Bangladesh Women at Dambulla on Saturday (July 20). This win was marked by a comprehensive all-round performance, underscored by Vishmi Gunaratne‘s steady half-century. Sri Lanka’s dominance on the field set the tone for the tournament, showcasing their prowess and intent to be a formidable force.

Bangladesh’s batting struggles

Electing to bat first, Bangladesh’s innings was fraught with challenges from the outset. The team faced immediate setbacks, losing four crucial wickets within the powerplay overs, which significantly hampered their momentum. The early dismissals left Bangladesh reeling, and it required a determined effort from captain Nigar Sultana, who played a crucial anchor role to stabilize the innings. Adding some much-needed impetus to the lower order was Shorna Akter, who delivered a quickfire 25 off just 14 balls. Despite her valiant efforts, Bangladesh could only muster a modest total of 111/8, falling s??????????????????????????hort of a competitive score.

Sri Lanka’s chase: Vishmi Gunaratne shines

In their pursuit of 112 runs, Sri Lanka encountered an early setback with the dismissal of their captain Chamari Athapaththu. However, the team’s depth and resilience came to the fore, proving they are no longer reliant on a single player. Gunaratne, continuing her remarkable form in 2024, anchored the chase with a composed and methodical half-century, her third in T20 internationals this year.

She found a reliable partner in Harshitha Samarawickrama, who provided excellent support, ensuring that Sri Lanka maintained a steady pace throughout the innings. The duo’s partnership was instrumental in guiding Sri Lanka to victory, as they comfortably reached the target with 17 balls to spare. The defeat further extended Bangladesh’s winless streak in T20 internationals to nine matches in 2024, highlighting the challenges they have faced in the format this year. Despite showing moments of promise, the team has struggled to convert opportunities into victories.

Sri Lanka‘s Maheesh Theekshana pulled off an exceptional catch at third man to dismiss Bangladesh‘s Shakib Al Hasan, during their Group D clash at the T20 World Cup 2024 at the Grand Prairie Cricket Stadium in Dallas.

Bangladesh’s chase

Positioned at 108/5 after 16 ove?rs, Bangladesh seemed on track to chase down the target of 125.

The crucial moment

Matheesha Pathirana was brought in to bowl the 17th over. On his second delivery, Pathirana bowled a short ball aimed at Shakib, who attempted to steer it over third man with a cut shot. Bangladesh’s narrow escape

Despite Sri Lanka’s valiant effort, Bangladesh managed to scrape through. Mahmudullah’s composed batting in the final overs guided Bangladesh to victory with an over and two wickets to spare. In a nail-biting encounter that kept cricket fans on the edge of their seats, defending champions Sri Lanka secured a thrilling v??ictory over Paki?stan by two wickets on the last ball. This intense s?howdown was a must-win match for both teams, determining their entry into the Asia Cup 2023 final, where th?ey will face India on September 17.

Sri Lanka’s Asia Cup final stint

Sri Lanka’s triumph marks their 12th appearance in the continental cup final, with 11 of them in the ODI format. Having won the coveted title six times in the past, they are no strangers to the pressures and expectations of such finals. Their opponents in the final, India, boast an impressive seven Asia Cup victories.

Pakistan’s competitive innings

This riveting game unfolded amidst changing fortunes, influenced by injuries and rain interruptions. Pakistan, plagued by injuries, batted first in this 42-overs-per-side contest, posting a competitive total of 252/7. Mohammad Rizwan‘s exceptional unbeaten knock of 86, supported by valuable contributions from Abdullah Shafique (52) and Iftikhar Ahmed (47), set the stage for a fiercely competitive encounter. Matheesha Pathirana‘s impressive performance, taking 3/65 for Sri Lanka, added further intrigue.

Sri Lanka’s heroic response

Sri Lanka’s response was equally heroic. Guided by stellar performances from Kusal Mendis (91), Sadeera Samarawickrama (48) and Charith Asalanka (49), they managed t?o reach the target of 252 runs.

In the crucial moments of the fixture, Sri Lanka had a requirement of just 12 runs from the last two overs, having five wickets in hand. However, Shaheen Afridi‘s impressive bowling effort allowed Pakistan to make a comeback by conceding only four runs and taking two wickets, leaving Sri Lanka needing 8 more runs to win.

Debutant Zaman Khan then delivered a strong final over, making it a situation where Sri Lanka required six runs from the last two balls, with Asalanka facing.?? Showing great composure, the left-handed batter smashed a boundary towards third-man and then carefully placed the ball in the open deep square-leg area to secure the two runs needed to win the game.

Unique scenario in the match

The contest nevertheless witnessed an unusual turn of events related to the DLS method. Despite interruptions due to rain, Sri Lanka found themselves chasing the exact total Pakistan had? set.

In standard cricket scenarios, the team batting first sets a target, and the chasing team must surpass it. Nonetheless, this particular game took an unconventional turn. Sri Lanka’s target remained 252 runs, which matched Pakistan’s total. This situation arose due to rain interruptions prompting the use of the DLS method, a standard procedure for adjusting targets in rain-affected fixtures.

Initially scheduled for 45 overs per side due to rain, the game faced further interruptions during Pakistan’s innings, shortening it to 42 overs per side. Despite Pakistan’s 252/7 in their 42 overs, the DLS method set Sri Lanka a target of 252 runs, one run less than it might have been in a typical situation.

Historic result in Sri Lanka vs Pakistan encounter

The clash between Sri Lanka and Pakistan in the coveted cup left a remarkable imprint on cricket history. In a truly extraordinary turn of events, the game achieved a distinction never seen before in international cricket. Despite both teams tallying identical runs within the same number of ov??ers, there was no need for the usual tiebreaker.

Traditionally, such a situation would lead to a captivating tiebreaker to decide the winner. However, ?this exceptional match witnessed Sri Lanka securing victory without the necessity of any additional contest.

betvisa888 casinoSri Lanka vs Bangladesh – Cricket Times - betvisa cricket //betvisa68.com/2023/09/asia-cup-2023-reason-behind-mehidy-hasan-mirazs-runout-with-both-batters-on-same-side/ Fri, 01 Sep 2023 12:57:05 +0000 //betvisa68.com/?p=93412

On Thursday, an unprecedented event occurred during the match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. Bangladesh allrounder Mehidy Hussain was involved in a muddle with Najmul Hossain Shanto. As a result, both batters reached the single crease ??due to confusion, but after a thorough check, Mehidy Hussain was declared o?ut by the umpires.

Here’s what happened:

The incident occurred on the third ball of the 37th over, which Sri Lankan pacer Kasun Rajitha was bowling. Mehidy Hasan placed the ball towards square leg, and the non-striker Shanto ran for a run. On the contrary, fielder Dhananjaya de Silva threw the ball towards the non-strikers’ end, and the bowler dismantled the bails while both batters were standing at the strikers’ end. If one sees this incident as it was, Najmul Shanto should be declared out as he was the one who left his crease and bumped into the striker’s end, but here the twist came in the incident.

According to Law 30.2.1, which talks about ‘which is batter’s ground’, if only one batter is within a ground, it is their ground and will remain so even if they are later joined there by the other batter.

Also Read: AB de?? Villiers predicts the leading run-scorer of Asia Cup 2023

By this law, Najmul Shanto was first to cross the batter’s end before Mehidy Hasan, which ultimately became his ground first. So, despite Mehidy Hasan returning to his crease, the umpires ruled him out instead of Najmul Shanto.

Bangladesh put on a mere 164 runs on board, which w??as easily chased down by Sri Lanka by losing just five wickets.

No other batter than Najmul Hossain Shanto (89) failed to make any spark for Bangladesh. Sri Lankan spinner Matheesha Pathirana starred with the ball for the hosts. Bangladesh will face Afghanistan in their next game on ??Sunday at the Gaddaf?i Stadium, Lahore.
