Australia have continued their domination over Sri Lanka in the ongoing five-match T20I series after t?he hosts registered a compr??ehensive victory in the fourth T20I to take the unassailable 4-0 lead on Friday.

Aussie superstar Glenn Maxwell was the star with his incredible batting display during the chase of 140 when the home team had experienced early setbacks. Apart from his match-winning performance with the bat, Maxwell also impressed one and all with splendid fielding to get rid of Sri Lankan top-order batter Kusal Mendis.

It all happened during the 11th over when the visitors were in a good position, having scored 73 runs in their first 10 overs, with both Mendis and Pathum Nissanka forming a partnership of 40 runs. However, a?? bullet throw by Maxwell ruined their plans.

The incident occurred on the third ball of the over when Nissanka pushed left-arm spinner Ashton Agar towards long-on. The pair decided to run for a couple, but Maxwell stormed in quickly to pick the ball and targeted the ??stumps with a r?ocket throw. Mendis did attempt a dive to save himself, but he got caught a good yard or two short.

Here is the video:

With the help of Nissanka (46) and Mendis (27), the tourists managed to post 139/9 in their allotted 20 overs. In reply, Australia lost their three wickets for just 49 before Maxwell and Josh Inglis teamed up to take?? their side out of trouble. The pair went on to stitch a crucia?l 71 run stand for the fourth wicket to make sure Australia got back home easily. While Inglis made 40 from 20 balls, Maxwell stayed unbeaten on 48 off 39 deliveries as Australia won the contest by six wickets.

“It was nice. Josh came out with great intent. I could play a different role. Just wanted to rotate the strike and not play too many dots. His range and clean hitting. His clarity and calmness is wonderful. He has a bright future and was part of the WC squad as well. Nice to hit the stumps and get the wicket for the team,” said Maxwell after the match.

Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc didn’t have a good outing in the recently-concluded third T20I of the ongoing five-match series against Sri Lanka at Manuka Oval ?in Canberra.

Despite the hosts restricted the Lankans at 121/6 in their allotted 20 overs, Starc ended up conceding runs at a dreadful economy rate of 7.50. In his qu?ota of 4 overs, the left-arm speedster gave away 30 runs without taking a single wicket.

During the 18th over of Sri Lanka’s innings, Starc bowled a bizarre delivery which became the most-talked-about moment from the contest. In an attempt to bowl an off-cutter, the New South Wales pacer made a mess of his delivery and conceded five runs.

Starc tried to bowl a slower off-cutter, but the ball slipped out of his hands and landed near the second slip position. Wicketkeeper Matthew Wade did? his best to save the ball, but it was too far from him.

“I was going to say it was Steve Harmison-like, but it wasn’t even that. I don’t reckon I’ve ever seen a ball go that wide while I’ve been commentating,” said former Aussie cricketer Brett Lee during the commentary.

Here is the video:

Having won the first two games at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Australia carried the momentum and thrashed the visitors in Canberra to take an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match leg. Pacer Kane Richardson shined with the ball taking three? wickets for 21 ?in his quota of 4 overs.

In their chase of 122, Glenn Maxwell (39) and skipper Aaron Finch (35) let the??ir bat do the talking as the hosts won the game wit??h six wickets in hand.

Australia defeated Sri Lanka in the first T20I of the ongoing fi?ve-match series at Sydney Cricket Ground?? on Friday.

Chasing a revised total of 142 from 19 overs, the visitors had a terrible start as they lost two wickets – Danushka Gunathilaka (1) and Avishka Fernando (6) – for just 21 in 3.3 overs. Then, Charith Asalanka and Pathum Nissanka partnered to bring the team out of trouble.

The duo added a crucial stand of 43 runs for the third wicket before Adam Zampa dismissed Nissanka (36). Two balls later in the? same over, Zampa sent back Asalanka (16) as well to reduce the tourists at 64/4.

The wicket of Asalanka opened flood gates as Sri Lanka could only manage to reach 122/9 in 19 overs, lo????????????????????????????sing the contest by 20 runs (DLS method).

Zampa and Josh Hazlewood were the pick of the bowlers for the hosts. While Zampa bagged three scalps for 18 in his quota of 4 overs, Hazlewood took four wickets f?or 12 runs in 4 overs.

Earlier, Australia posted 149/9 in their allotted 20 overs. Opener Ben McDermott and all-rounder Marcus Stoinis were the only major run-scorers for?? the home team.

Josh Inglis will mak?e his international debut as Australia take on Sri Lanka i??n the first T20I of the five-match series at the SCG on Friday, February 11.

Inglis is all set to replace Mitch Marsh while Ben McDermott, the leading run-scorer of BBL 11, will open the batting along with skipper Aaron Finch as David Warner has been rested for the Sri Lanka series.

The rest of the XI is pretty much similar to the one that won the T20 World Cup last November in Dubai.

Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis will form the middle-order with Matthew Wade as the wicketkeeper. Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood are in the pace line up again, while Adam Zampa?? is the sole spinner in the final XI.

“Ben McDermott has been in unbelievable nick so to get him at the top of the order was really crucial for us. And Josh Inglis has been someone who has been shuffled around the order a little bit. (His selection) is a sign of how well he’s played over the last couple of years, but also how great he was around the group at the T20 World Cup,” said captain Finch while confirming the pla????ying XI.

“He got the runs he would have liked throughout the Big Bash as he has done in the past. But he was playing slightly different roles. So it’s a great opportunity for him,” Finch added.

Travis Head will miss the series opener to represent South Australia in the Sheffield Shiel??d but he will be available for the final two T20Is.

Australia XI:

Ben?? McDermott, Aaron Finch (c), Josh Inglis, Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis?, Matthew Wade (wk), Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood.

Left-arm pacer Daniel Sams has been added to Australia’s T20I squad for the upcoming five-match home series against Sri Lanka. Sams has replaced batter Travis Head, who was the ‘Player of the Series’ in the recently-concluded Ashes.

Cricket Australia (CA) has announced the revised schedule for the upcoming home T20I series against Sri Lanka. The five-match series, starting from February 11, will be played across three venues – the Sydney Cricket Ground, Manuka Oval and Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Earlier, some matches were scheduled to be playe??d in Brisbane, Adelaide and the Gold Coast, but now it has been relocated in order to minimize biosecurity risks by reduci?ng travel across the country.

“CA will continue to prioritize the health and safety of all players, match officials, staff, fans, broadcasters and the wider community as we navigate the challenges presented by Covid-19,” said Nick Hockley, CA CEO, in an official statement.

“We know that fans in South Australia and Queensland will be disappointed to miss out on these matches, and we remain committed to bringing international cricket to all states and territories across the country as safe as possible. We thank Sri Lanka Cricket for working closely with us to make the series possible and look forward to five entertaining matches,” he added.

Here is the revised schedule:

  • First T20I – February 11, Sydney Cricket Ground
  • Second T20I – February 13, Sydney Cricket Ground
  • Third T20I – February 15, Manuka Oval
  • Fourth T20I – February 18, Melbourne Cricket Ground
  • Fifth T20I – February 20, Melbourne Cricket Ground

Josh Hazlewood to return for Sri Lanka T20Is

Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood has confirmed that he will be back for the upcoming T20I leg. Notably, Hazlewood only played the first Ashes Test against England as a side strain didn’t allow him to feature in the remaining four fixtures.

“I’m definitely back for the Sri Lanka T20s. I’ve got a couple of weeks up my sleeve to get right and should be fine,” said Hazlewood as quoted by cricket.com.au.
