“The Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket made this decision taking into consideration the team’s good performances in the recent tours against India, England, and New Zealand, where Jayasuriya was in charge as the ‘interim head coach’,” Sri Lanka Cricket stated.

During the 19th match of the ongoing Lanka Premier League (LPL) between Galle Marvels and Colombo Strikers, right-arm fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana jolts the stage with his nail-biting yorkers.

 Matheesha Pathirana’s double strikes

Pathirana’s exceptional yorkers

The first over of Pathirana’s spell was a decent one, as he was sent for a six and also given a wide delivery, but later on, in the 16th over, he opened his wickets account with Sahan Arachchige. Later on, in his final over, 2??0th, Path??irana managed to take 3 wic?kets, and with this, he became the star of the match.

This tiered approach aims to provide players with varying levels of support and recognition, reflecting their skills, experience, and contributions to the team.

In the wake of Sri Lanka’s remarkable three-wicket triumph over Zimbabwe in the first T20I, the spotlight shifted to former Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews, ??whose stellar pe?rformance with a thumping knock of 48 runs played a crucial anchoring role in securing victory for his team.

What made Mathews’ contribution even more noteworthy was the fact that he received a T20I call-up after a prolonged hiatus of three years. Post-match, the 36-year-old cricketer candidly expressed his frustration, criticizing the Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC) for seemi?ngly overlo??oking him for an extended period.

Mathews’ powerful comeback not only underscored his enduring skills on the field but also raised questions about the selection decisions that had kept him sidelined from the T20I squad for such a substantial period.

Angelo Mathews lambasts at Sri Lanka Cricket

Mathews voiced his frustration at being overlooked for T20 World Cups (2021 and 2022) despite delivering stellar performances with both bat and ball in the last two Lanka Premier League (LPL) seasons. He suggested that decisions may have been influenced by undisclosed agendas and expressed disappointment at his team’s failure to qualify for the Champions Trophy 2025.

“In the last two Lanka Premier League (LPL) seasons, I batted and bowled well, but unfortunately, I wasn’t selected for the T20 World Cups, and I wasn’t given reasons for that. “If you take decisions that are driven by agendas, these kinds of things can happen – we haven’t even qualified for the Champions Trophy,” Matthews said in the post-ma????tch presentation ceremony.

Sri Lanka cricket is going through a tumultuous period, marked by dismal performance in the ODI World Cup 2023. Compounding their challenges, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has swiftly suspended Sri Lanka Cricket’s (SLC) membership due to immediate concerns about government interference. The development underscored a challenging phase for Sri Lankan cricket, both on?? and off the field.

Amidst unfolding events, Arjuna Ranatunga, the former skipper of Sri Lanka, has made weighty accusations against Jay Shah, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Ranatunga alleges that Shah has exerted undue influence and interference in the affairs of Sri Lanka Cricket, bringing to light a contentious dimension to the ongoi??ng developments in the cricketing realm.

Ranatunga’s allegation on Jay Shah

Ranatunga asserted that a perceived connection between SLC officials and Jay Shah has led ??the BCCI to believe they can exert undue influence and contr??ol over Sri Lanka Cricket.

“Because of the connection between SLC officials and Jay Shah they (the BCCI) are under the impression that they can trample and control SLC,” Ranatung??a?? said, as quoted by the Sri Lankan newspaper Daily Mirror.

Ranatunga further claimed that Shah is effectively running Sri Lanka Cricket, attributing the challenges faced by SLC to pressure exerted by Shah. The former left-handed batter mentioned that Shah’s influence stems from his father’s (Amit Shah) role as India’s Home Minister, expressing concern about external forces negatively impacting the administration of Lankan cricket.

“Jay Shah is running Sri Lanka Cricket. SLC is being ruining because of pressure from Jay Shah. One man in India is ruining Sri Lankan cricket, he is only powerful because of his father (Amit Shah), who is India’s home Minister,” the 59-year-old added.

Wrath falls upon the Sri Lanka Cricket Board

In a significant development, Sri Lanka’s Sports Minister, Roshan Ranasinghe, took action on Monday by dismissing?? the national cricket board following their dismal performance in the ongoing event.

In a statement issued last Friday, t??he sports minister delivered a scathing critique of Sri Lanka Cricket, alleging disloyalty and corruption within the organization. He demanded the immediate resignation of its board members.

Ranasinghe penned a letter on Saturday addressed to the International Cricket Council‘s (ICC) ful?l members, seeking the??ir comprehension and backing.

“Sri Lanka Cricket has been besieged with complaints of player disciplinary issues, management corruption, financial misconduct and match-fixing allegations,” Ranasinghe said in the letters??, released to Sri Lankan media.

Former Sri Lankan spinner Sachithra Senanayake, who had once been a key figure in Sri Lanka’s cricketing world, has now found himself in big trouble. S?enanayake was facing trial under matc?h-fixing charges for quite some time and has now surrendered to the Special Investigation Unit of the Sports Ministry. The cricketing community was left stunned when news broke that Senanayake had been arrested, sending shockwaves through the cricketing fraterni?ty.

Sachithra Senanayake’s cricketing journey

It is worth mentioning that Senanayake has donned the Sri Lankan jersey in a total of 74 international matches across various formats. He represented Sri Lanka in 73 white-ball matches and one Test, contributing significantly with 78 international wickets. His career spanned a spectrum of challenges and triumphs, ultima??tely earning him recognition as a prominent figure in the cricketing world. However, the recent controversy surrounding Senanayake has now tainted his formerly esteemed career.

Legal charges on Sachithra Senanayake

The veteran off-spinner has been accused of involvement in match-fixing activities during the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2020, and it is alleged that he attempted to manipulate matches, maintaining contact with other cricketers via telephone from Dubai. The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court even imposed a travel ban on him in August 2023, signalling the gravity of the situation.

Denial and arrest

It’s important to note that Senanayake has vehemently denied these allegations in the past. In 2020, he issued a statement condemning what he referred to as “unsubstantiated and manifestly frivolous allegations” and even warned of taking legal action against those who propagated such claims. Nevertheless, despite his denials, the Attorney General’s Department found credible evidence provided by the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) within the Sports Ministry, which prompted legal action under the Prevention of Offences Related to Sports Act that ultimately led to his arrest.
