South Africa defeated Sri Lanka in the first T20I of the three?-match series by 28 runs at R.Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Friday.

Batting first, Reeza Hendricks and Quinton de Kock took the visitors to a flying start esta??blishing a 73-run stand for the opening wicket. As South Africa were looking set for a big total, Sri Lanka star Wanindu Hasaranga ruined their plans and showcased why he is regarded as on??e of the best all-rounders in the shortest format.

Hasaranga put the brakes on run-flow by dismissing both the Proteas openers De Kock (36) and t Hendricks (38) in his consecutive overs. Soon, Heinrich Klassen (2) was trapped in front by Maheesh Theekshana to reduce the tourists to 87/3.

Then, Aiden Markram and David Miller took charge and put their team out from hot waters. The duo went on to form a crucial 65-runs partnership for the fourth wicket to help South Africa post 163/5 on the board in their allotted 20 overs. While Markram scored 48,?? Miller contributed? with 26 runs.

In reply, the hosts only managed to reach 135/6 in 20 overs, losing the contest by 28 runs. Opener Dinesh Chandimal scored a brilliant unbeaten 66 off 54 deliveries, but he couldn’t get enough support from other batters.

Sri Lanka thrashed South Africa in the third and final One-Day International (ODI) to seal the series 2-1 on Tuesday. Debutant spinner Maheesh Theekshana lit up the R. Pre?madasa Stadium in Colombo to help his team register a massive 78-run victory over the Proteas.

Theekshana picked up a four-wicket haul for just 37 runs in his quota of 10 overs as the hosts bundled out the Keshav Maharaj-led side for a mere 125 runs. The right-armer sent back the likes of Janneman Malan (18), Heinrich Klaasen (22), Kagiso Rabada (8) and Maharaj (15)?? to complete his four wickets i?n the game.

Apart from Theekshana, Wanindu Hasaranga and Dushmantha Chameera bagged a couple of scalps each. While Hasaranga picked up two wickets for 32 runs in 8 overs, Chameera conceded 16 runs in 4 overs ?to bag two scalps.

Earlier, the Islanders posted 203/9 on the scoreboard in their allotted 50 overs. Charith Asalanka was the top scorer for his team, contributing 47 runs off 71 balls with the help of two boundaries. Dhananjaya de Silva (31) and Chameera (29) also made val??uable runs to take their team to a compe?titive total.

For the visitors, Maharaj (3/38) picked up three wickets while George Linde (2/32) and Tabraiz Shamsi (2/31) bagged a couple of scalps each.

Chameera was named ‘Player of the Match’ for his all-round (29 runs with the bat and 2 wickets with the ball) contribution in the game. Similarly, Asalanka was chosen as ‘Player of the Series’ for finishing the series as leading run-getter. He made 196 runs in three ODIs at an impressive average of 65.33 with two half-centuries.

“Always nice to be man of the series in an international tournament. My first. Made a plan to work singles, enjoyed that. My role in the team is to bat longer. Were looking at 230-240. After Hasaranga got out, I felt 210 was a good score on this pitch,” said Asalanka after the match.

South Africa captain Temba Bavuma will return home from Sri Lanka after suffering a thumb injury during the first ODI?? against the hosts on Thursday.

The incident took place in the 26?th over of the second innings when Bavuma copped a direct blow to his thumb. He was trying to save himself from a direct throw off a Sri Lankan fielder but the ball struck on his right thumb. Bavuma subsequently retired hurt two overs later due to persistent discomfort.

According to a Cricket South Africa (CSA) statement, scans on Bavuma’s thumb have “indicated a fracture” and therefore, 31-year-old was advised to fly back home as soon as possible to consult a specialist.

A date for Bavuma’s return to the playing field will be determined once that process has been completed.

For the ongoing white-ball series, left arm-spinner Keshav Maharaj will take over as South Africa’s captain.

On Monday, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced the 22-member squad for the upcoming limited-ove?rs series against South Africa.

Experienced campaigner Dinesh Chandimal has returned to the national team. Chandimal last wore the Sri Lanka jersey during the tour of the West Indies in March-April earlier this year. Along with Chandimal, Kusal Perera, who has finished his isolation after testing positive for COVID-19, is also part of the ou??tfit.

Dasun Shanaka will lead the Sri Lanka team with Dhananjaya de Silva shall be his deputy. The selectors have included some new faces in the form of Mahesh Theekshana and Pulina Tharanga.

The uncapped spin duo of Theekshana and Tharanga have earned maiden call-ups due to their recent performances with the ball in the Dialog-SLC Invitational T20 League 2021. While Tharanga finished the tournament as the third-highest wicket-taker (7), Theekshana was the eighth-highest wic??ket-taker (4).

Left-arm fast bowler Binura Fernando has also made his comeback after recovering from an ankle injury. Binura ??had missed the recently concluded Indian series due to his injury.

Both Sri Lanka and South Africa will play three ODI matches and as many T20I games. The three-match ODI leg will be played on September ??2, 4 and 7. Similarly, the three-match T20I series will be played on September 10, 12 and 14. All the matc?hes shall take place at the iconic R Premadasa International Stadium in Colombo.
