In the third ODI between Sri Lanka and New Zealand at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, New Zealand opted to bat first after winning the toss. Openers Will Young and Tim Robinson came out with intent, hammering 24 runs in the first three overs. However, their aggressive start was halted when Sri Lankan captain Charith Asalanka produced a moment of brilliance.

Charith Asalanka’s stunning catch to remove Tim Robinson

New Zealand’s fiery start in the third ODI against Sri Lanka at Pallekele came to an abrupt halt in the fourth over. Robinson, looking to capitalize on his aggressive intent, attempted to loft a full-length delivery from Mohamed Shiraz. The ball, shaping into the batter, caused Robinson t??o mistime his drive as the bat turned sligh?tly in his hands.

Positioned at mid-off, Sri Lanka’s skipper Asalanka showcased exceptional athleticism. He leaped high to his left, almost doubling his stature, and pulled off a breathtaking one-handed catch. Robinson, dismissed for 9 off 7 balls (two boundaries), walked back disappointed as Sri Lanka celebrated an early breakthrough. The dismissal left New Zealand at 24/1 in 3.2 overs and energized the home side.

Sri Lanka’s steady recovery and rain halts progress

After Robinson’s dismissal, Young and Henry Nicholls rebuilt the innings with a steady partnership. Young, in fine form, showcased his class by piercing gaps with precise timing and accumulating runs through elegant drives. Nicholls complemented him with controlled aggression, keeping t?he scoreboard ticking. Their partnership added 88 runs for the second wicket, taking New Zealand to 112/1 in 21 overs.

Young reached a well-crafted half-century off 61 balls, laced with eight boundaries, while Nicholls remained steady with a fluent 46 off 51 balls. Despite the disciplined bowling of Maheesh Theekshana and Jeffrey Vandersay, t??he Blackcaps duo maintained a healthy run rate, ensuring the visitors remai??ned in control.

However, just as New Zealand appeared poised to accelerate,?? rain intervened, forcing a halt to the game. The players left the field with New Zealand holding a slight edge, though the interruption left both teams pondering revised strategies for the remainder of the match.

Sri Lanka and New Zealand are set to face off in the third and final ODI of the series at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday (November 19). With the hosts already sealing the series with a 2-0 lead, this match serves as a dead rubber. However, New Zealand will aim to end the tour on a positive note by winning the ??last encou??nter.

Sri Lanka’s dominance and New Zealand’s quest for redemption

Sri Lanka’s commanding performances in the first two ODIs have ensured a series win, showcasing their balanced side and strong form at home. With the final game offering an opportunity to experiment, Sri Lanka might give chances to fringe players while aiming for a clean sweep to boost their morale ahead of upcoming challenges.

Despite their struggles in the ODI series, the B??lackcaps will aim to finish their c??ampaign with a win. While their T20I series performance showcased resilience, their ODI outings have highlighted inconsistencies in both batting and bowling. A win in Pallekele would help them salvage some pride and gather momentum for future assignments.

The Pallekele pitch is expected to be a batter-friendly sur??face, making it easier for players to time their shots. Nevertheless, spinners are likely to dominate in the latter stages of the game as the pitch slows down. Pacers may struggle to extract movement unless rain before the match alters the co?nditions. The second ODI between Sri Lanka and New Zealand is set to take place on November 17, 2024, at the Pallekele International C??ricket Stadium. This match is crucial as Sri Lanka lead the three-match series 1-0 after their victory in the first ODI.

In the first ODI, Sri Lanka showcased a dominant performance, winning by 45 runs using the DLS method. Key contributions came from Avishka Fernando and Kusal Mendis, both scoring centuries that propelled Sri Lanka to a strong total. Their bowlers complemented the batting effort with disciplined spells, effectively restricting New Zealand’s chase.

New Zealand struggled in the first match, particularly in their batting department. They faced challenges against Sri Lankan spinners and had two debutants in their lineup, which highlighted their inexperience. The absence of fast bowler Lockie Ferguson, ruled out due to injury, further weakened their attack. Despite thes??e setbacks, they will be looking to bounce back and level the series in this crucial second ODI.

  • Date and Time: November 17; 09:00 am GMT | 2:30 pm IST | 7:00 pm local

Pallekele International Cricket Stadium Pitch Report:

The pitch at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium is typically known for being a batting-friendly surface, offering good pace and bounce for the batters. Historically, it has favoured teams that chase, as the conditions tend to become easier for batting as the match progresses. The outfield is usually quick, allowing for boundaries to be scored with relative ease. However, spinners can also play a crucial role, especially in the middle overs??, as the pitch may offer some turn as the game wears on. Overall, teams winning the toss may prefer to chase, taking advantage of the conditions in the second innings while capitalizing on any potential wear and tear on the pitch. Expect an exciting contest with plenty of runs on offer if the batters apply themselves well.

After a competitive 1-1 draw in the T20I series, Sri Lanka will look to bounce back strongly in the upcoming three-match ODI series against New Zealand. The first ODI of the series is set to be held in Dambulla, with the remaining matches taking place in Pallekele. The Sri Lankan team, led by Charith Asalanka, comes into the series with a solid recent record, having triumphed over India and the West Indies at home. However, despite their strong showing in the T20Is, the Lankans couldn’t seal the series win, with the second match ending in a dramatic tie, leaving them hungry for success in the 50-over format. Wanindu Hasaranga aur Lockie Ferguson will not feature in the 50-over series.

Sri Lanka’s recent form and momentum

The Lankan side enters this ODI series with high spirits, riding on their strong performances in recent home series. They have looked dominant with the bat and ball, particularly with the likes of Dasun Shanaka playing key role. Nevertheless, the setback in the T20I series could add extra motivation to the side as they look to get back to winning ways in the longer format. Asalanka, in particular, will be pivotal in leading the team with his solid batting performances, alongside the ever-reliable Pathum Nissanka and the experienced Angelo Mathews.

New Zealand’s challenge and key players

New Zealand, led by Mitchell Santner, enters the series under somewhat different circumstances. While missing some of their star players, they are well-equipped with a strong mix of youth and experience. Key players like Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman and Glenn Phillips will be crucial to New Zealan??d’s hopes. The Black Caps will be looking to play with a chip on their ?shoulder, especially after their 1-1 draw in the T20Is. Despite their squad not being at full strength, their depth and variety will pose challenges to Sri Lanka, particularly in conditions that are familiar to the home side.

Sri Lanka have suffered a significant setback ahead of their upcoming ODI series against New Zealand, with star spinner Wanindu Hasaranga being ruled out due to injury. The three-match series, set to begin on November 13, wil??l see the hosts without one of their key players, dealing a blow to their spin department.

Injury to Wanindu Hasaranga forces him to miss ODI series

Hasaranga, who has been a crucial figure in Sri Lanka’s bowling attack, sustained a left hamstring injury while bowling during the second T20I against New Zealand. According to reports from DailyMirror Online, Hasaranga has already returned to Colombo and commenced rehabilitation at the High-Performance Centre. His absen??ce will leave a significant ?gap in Sri Lanka’s spin options for the upcoming ODI series.

Inexperienced spinner named as replacement of Hasaranga

To fill the void left by Hasaranga, Sri Lanka have called up leg-spinner Dushan Hemantha as his replacement. Hema??ntha, 30, last featured for Sri Lanka in the 2023 ODI World Cup against India. While his experience in ODIs is ?limited to just five matches, where he has taken two wickets, the selectors will hope that he can step up in Hasaranga’s absence.

ODI series schedule

The ODI series between Sri Lanka and New Zealand will begin on November 13 at the Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium. The remaining two ODIs are scheduled for November 17 and 19, with t?he final two matches to be played at the Pa??llekele International Cricket Stadium.

New Zealand‘s fast-bowling spearhead, Lockie Ferguson, has been ruled out of the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka due to a calf injury. This news arrives just a day after Ferguson’s outstanding performance in the second T20I, where he clinched a remarkable hat-trick, leading his team to a series-leveling victory. The ODI series, consisting of three matches, is scheduled to commence on November 13 in Dambulla.

Hat-trick hero sidelined by calf injury

Ferguson delivered a stellar bowling spell in the second T20I, taking three wickets for just seven runs in his two overs. This hat-trick proved pivotal in New Zealand’s defense of a low target of 108, helping the Black Caps secure a win and level the 2-match T20I series. Unfortunately, he sustained a calf injury during his second over, fo??rcing him off the field.

Following this setback, Ferguson will return home for further scans to assess the injury’s severity and plan his recovery. New Zealand’s head coach, Gary Stead, expressed his disappointment over losing Ferguson’s expertise a??nd leadership for the series.

“We’re gutted for Lockie. He showed in the space of just two overs what an asset he is with the ball and he’s also brought a lot of leadership to this group, so he’ll be a big miss heading into an important ODI series for us,” said Stead in an official statement.

Lockie Ferguson’s like-for-like replacement announced

In response to Ferguson’s absence, New Zealand Cricket has announced that Adam Milne will step in for the ODI series. Milne, known for his speed and experience, last represented New Zealand in a home T20??I series against Australia earlier this year.

“To be ruled out so early in a tour is always tough to take, but we’re hopeful his recovery will be short and he’ll be back out on the field in no time. Adam is a like-for-like replacement who brings genuine pace and plenty of international experience, so we’re looking forward to welcoming him into the group,” added Stead.

New Zealand emerged victorious in a nail-biting contest against Sri Lanka, clinching the second T20I of their tour by ??a mere 5 runs at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium. In a game that saw bowlers dominate, both teams struggled to put up significant scores, making it a memorable low-scoring thriller for fans. Sri Lanka’s decision to bowl first seemed promising, but New Zealand’s resilience with the ball ultimately sealed the victory, leveling the series.

New Zealand stumbles with the bat

Batting first, New Zealand faltered from the onset as Sri Lankan bowlers applied intense pressure, restricting them to 108 runs in 19.3 overs. Will Young (30 off 32) provided a brief resistance, anchoring the innings alongside Josh Clarkson, who chipped in with a quick 24 off 25 balls, including two sixes. However, no other New Zealand batter managed to reach double figures apart from Mitchell Santner (19 off 24), who offered a crucial contribution in the middle order. Sri Lankan spinner Wanindu Hasaranga stood out, claiming an impressive 4 wickets for just 17 runs in his 4 overs, while Matheesha Pathirana picked up 3 s?calps for only 11 runs, ensuring a daunting t?ask for the New Zealand lineup.

Sri Lanka’s collapse amidst a spirited bowling performance

Chasing a modest 109, Sri Lanka began cautiously but faced an immediate setback with early wickets. Despite Pathum Nissanka’s valiant effort of 52 off 51 balls, including six boundaries, Sri Lanka’s batting lineup crumbled under pressure, failing to maintain partnerships. Bhanuka Rajapaksa (15 off 13) briefly raised hopes for a successful chase, but as wickets continued to tumble, Sri Lanka found themselves in a precarious position. Glenn Phillips led New Zealand’s attack with a sensational spell, taking 3 wickets for just 6 runs in 1.5 overs. Lockie Ferguson also contributed significantly with a brilliant hat-trick in his 2 overs, conceding only 7 runs, while Michael Bracewell and Santner each took key wickets to dismantle Sri Lanka’s batt??ing order.

In a tense finale, Sri Lanka fell short by 5 runs, with their last wicket falling in the penultimate ball of the innings at 103 runs. New Zealand’s disciplined and relentless bowling effort proved decisive in defending a low total and securing a well-fought victory.
