Indian cricket star Virat Kohli has once again found himself at the center of controversy following the recently-concluded Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Known for his intense on-field persona, Kohli’s fiery interactions and heated exchanges with players have often made headlines, and this series has been no different. From a shoulder incident with an Australian player during the Melbourne Test to mocking the infamous Sandpaper Scandal in the Sydney Test, Kohli’s actions have become the subject of intense debate in the cricketing world.

Virat Kohli’s on-field feuds fuel debate

Kohli first made headlines during the Melbourne Test when Kohli and Australian opener Sam Konstas were involved in a heated confrontation. The altercation occurred after the 10th over of Australia’s innings when Kohli appeared to brush shoulders with Konstas while walking past him. The physical contact did not sit well with Konstas, who immediately expressed his displeasure. The situation escalated into a verbal spat between the two players, prompting the intervention of on-field umpires to restore order. While the exchange showcased Kohli’s aggressive demeanor, it also drew criticism for crossing the line of sportsmanship.

Kohli again made waves on the third day of the Sydney Test, where his animated gestures caught the attention of fans and critics alike. After Steve Smith’s dismissal, Kohli was seen making a “sandpaper” gesture toward the Australian crowd, an apparent reference to the infamous 2018 ball-tampering scandal. The scandal, which involved Smith, David Warner, and Cameron Bancroft using sandpaper to alter the condition of the ball, remains one of the darkest moments in Australian cricket history. Kohli’s reference to the incident?? was widely seen as a mocking gesture.

Simon Katich’s scathing remarks on Kohli’s behavior

Former Australian cricketer Simon Katich, who worked with Kohli as the coach of Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2019, has weighed in on the recent incidents involving the Indian batter. Katich questioned Kohli’s mindset during the tour, criticizing his physical contact in Melbourne and the sandpaper reference in Sydney as unnecessary and unsavory incidents.

â€?em>I think you have to question what sort of headspace he’s been in on this tour to be doing that, making physical contact in Melbourne and then even the other unsavoury incident in Sydney with the sandpaper reference there with the pockets,â€?Katich said on ESPN’s Around the Wicket show.

Katich criticized Kohli’s actions, stating they were unnecessary and referencing outdated controversies, ultimately suggesting that such behavior has tarnished Kohli’s reputation both on and off the field during this tour.

I mean that in itself, there was no need for that. It’s old news so in a way I think he’s tarnished his reputation somewhat on this tour, on and off the field,” Katich added.

Rohit Sharma has been under much fury from Indian fans and analysts after his failure as a batter and captain of the squad which lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to Australia for the first time in 10 years. The latest to comment on Indian skipper’s current form woes is from former Australian batter Simon Katich who shared his unique perspective on what Rohit should ??d?o in the future.

Simon Katich takes a dig at Rohit Sharma’s post-retirement plans

Without giving any chance of return to Rohit, Katich highlighted that red-ball cricket has indeed come to a dead-end for Rohit according to him. In a discussion with Star Sports, Katich took the criticism of the Indian skipper to a whole new level ??and reckoned Rohit has a future in stand-up comedy.

“Well, if you look at the numbers, they ar??e damning. We saw it in this Test. It was very selfless of him to opt out of the Test, I saw in that interview, very well-spoken. There’s no doubt he has a future after he is done playing cricket in stand-up comedy because his humor was very good,/em> Katich mocki?ngly remarked.

Additionally, Katich highlighted the kind of physical inconvenience Test cricket can be for a 37-year-old. He said: “Those numbers are not for pretty reading. ??Test cricket isn’t a place for 37-year-??olds at the top of the order./em>

India are set to play England in a 5-match Test series in June this year. This will be a major bilateral Test series that the Indian team will play after their defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. According to Katich, the tour to Eng??land is not goin?g to be easy for Rohit.

“Only he knows whether he has the hunger and drive at 37 to go again. England is not going to be an easy series,” Katich pointed out.

Rohit’s batting woe a constant concern for India

Rohit had a disappointing season with the bat, particularly in the longest format of the game. Indian cricket’s “Hitmanâ€?scored his last Test century in March 2024 against England in Dharamsala. His performances in overseas Test matches have been particularly concerning. A series of underwhelming knocks from the Indian skipper started with his poor batting display in South Africa at the beginning of 2024. The 37-year-old end?ured a dismal run with the bat during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. His current form in red-ball cricket has further clouded his prospects of?? getting a place in the Indian squad for the England tour.

As the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 heats up with the Boxing Day Test on the horizon, former Australian cricketer Simon Katich has laid out a tactical blueprint for the Australian team to neutralize the threat posed by India’s pace spearhead, Jasprit Bumrah. With the series currently at a 1-1 deadlock, the advice comes at a critical juncture where strategies could dictate the series’ outcome.

Understanding Jasprit Bumrah’s dominance

Bumrah, renowned for his unconventional action and ability to deliver yorkers with pinpoint accuracy, has been a significant challenge for the Australian batting line-up this series. He boasts an impressive tally of 21 wickets in three Tests at an average of 10.90, making him the series’ leading wicket-taker. His performance, including a match haul of 8 for 72 in Perth, has left Australian batters struggling to adapt to his variations in pace and line.

Simon Katich shares the strategy to tackle Bumrah

Katich advocated for the Australian batters to focus on keeping the scoreboard moving with singles and doubles rather than looking for boundary options?????????????????????????? against Bumrah. By not allowing him to settle into a rhythm, they could disrupt his line and length. The former Australian player stressed the need for impeccable defensive techniques.

“All the talk is around having more positive intent, and I think that’s all well and good, but against someone like Bumrah, intent isn’t about blazing him for fours because he doesn’t bowl many bad balls. A lot of that intent has to be about rotating strike and being able to defend really well, because you’re not going to be able to play with any intent if you aren’t there after the tenth over,” said Katich while speaking on SEN 1116.

In the dynamic world of international cricket, Babar Azam stands as a symbol of elegance and skill, making his mark as one of the foremost batters in modern-day cricket. The f?ormer Pakistan captain has garnered widespread acclaim for his flawless batting techniques, mastering both limited-overs cricket and making significant strides in Test formats. As Babar continues to evolve as a legendary batter, a new era is unfolding in the Pakistani cricket arena.

Babar Azam’s current endeavors in Australia

Currently participating in the ongoing first Test in Perth against Australia, Babar finds himself at the helm of Pakistan’s batting lineup. This series marks the first since Babar’s relinquishment of the captaincy across formats, with Shan Masood leading the Pakistan te?am in the red-ball battle against the Aussies.

Simon Katich’s bold prediction

Amidst Babar’s exemplary journey, former Australian opener Simon Katich has cast his gaze toward the future of Pakistani cricket. Known for his astute cricketing insights, Katich has shared his thoughts on an emerging Pakistani batter who he believes has the potential to surpass Babar’s brilliance on the international stage.

During a commentary session on Day 2 of the Perth Test, Katich identified Abdullah Shafique as the player destined for greatness in Pakistan cricket. Katich commended Shafique’s assertive approach against spin, emphasizing a particular moment where he confidently dispatched Nathan Lyon straight over his head.

Will be a better player than Babar Azam: Katich

Katich’s endorsement of Shafique comes as a significant statement, adding a layer of anticipation to the young batters’ burgeoning career. The Australian cricket pundit believes that Shafique’s early success in Test cricket and aggressive style against spin bode well for his future.

“He’s a good young player, he’s had a good start to his Test career. What I like about him the most is that he’s aggressive against spin. We have already seen him today hit Nathan Lyon straight over his head, so I like the look of him,” said Katich.

“I think he’s going to be a better player than Babar Azam,” he predicted.

Former Australia batter Simon Katich has parted ways with the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) ??less than ??two months before the tournament kicks-off in Mumbai.

According to a report in InsideSport, Katich’s decision is sparked by the calls taken by SRH co-owner Kaviya Maran at the recently-concluded IPL auction.

West Indies wicketkeeper-batsman Nicholas Pooran was bought for Rs 10.75 lakhs despite having a horrendous season for Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the UAE, while his teammate Romario Shepherd, who has not featured in a single IPL game, was signed up for Rs 7.75 lakhs. Notably, all the calls at the auction table were taken by Kaviya, with cricket legends in form of Brian Lara, Muttiah Muralitharan, Tom Moody, and Katich himself being mere spectators.

Well, this is not the first incident where the Sunrisers management has come under scrutiny. They sacked Aussie star David Warner from captaincy in the middle of the tournament in IPL 2021 and were heavily criticised for their decision by cricket pundits and SRH fans. Not only this much, SRH also dropped Warner from their playing XI in the later stage?s of the competition.

Since last season, Trevor Bayliss and Brad Haddin have also resigned from their coaching job.

For the upcoming IPL, SRH have recruited Simon Helmot as assistant coach. Helmot, 50, was previously part of the Hyderabad’s coaching staff from 2012 to 2019. He also coached Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) to the CPL title in 2015.

Kane Williamson will be leading the team in IPL 2022.

Simon Katich has stepped down as head coach of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), the IPL franchise announced at a press conferenc?e on Saturday.

“Simon Katich, the head coach of the RCB, has decided to step down. It’s mainly due to personal reasons. We, as management, completely support his decision and back him on this,” Rajesh Menon, the vice-president and head of RCB, said.

Mike Hesson, RCB’s Director of Cricket Operations, will also be their head coach for the upcoming second leg of IPL 2021.

“We would like to thank Simon Katich for his work during his time at RCB and wish him all success in the future. In RCB, we always have a business continuity plan, and as per the business continuity plan, Mike Hesson will step in and discharge the duties of head coach until the end of this tournament,” Menon added.

“We all know, Mike Hesson has been coaching the New Zealand cricket team and other cricket teams for the last 15-20 years. So Mike will be stepping into this position till the end of this tournament, and he will also be holding the existing role of Director of Cricket Operations.”

Katich, who was appointed head coach of the RCB in August 2019, played a key role in reviving the fortunes of Virat Kohli & Co. over the last two years. Under Katich, RCB reached the play-offs in IPL 2020 – the first time they managed to do so since 2016. RCB were at the third spot in the points table until IPL 2021 got postponed due to positive COVID-19 cases in the bio-bubble.

Bowling yorkers is one of the most quintessential factors in white-ball cricket. A bo??wler who is able to bowl yorkers consistently is highly valued in the limited-overs format.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) traditionally has struggled in t?heir bowling department. There have been various instances when RCB had to face defeat due to the inefficacies in their bowling unit, despite posting daunting totals.

This time around, under the watch of head coach Simon Katich and bowling coach Adam Griffith, RCB is lo?oking to make amends of their shortcomin?gs in the bowling department.

The coaching staff devised an innovative training drill to help RCB bowlers to nail their yorkers. They kept a stump at the blockhole area and encouraged bowlers to hit the yorkers consistently.

em>Our bowling coach, Adam Griffith, comes up with a fun and challenging competition to help our bowlers fire in those yorkers. Safe to say all our bowlers are sharpshooters! #PlayBold #IPL2020 #WeAreChallengers,RCB captioned their post.

Here’s the video:

Captain Kohli seen in good spirits

Gurkeerat Singh Mann, fast bowler Isuru Udana, Navdeep Saini, leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal along with all-rounders Shivam Dube and Shahbaz Ahmed hit the yorkers perfectly.

Captain Virat Kohli was seen in good spirits along with his teammates. This time a??round??, RCB has come up with a strong unit on paper.

Aaron Finch is expected to assist Kohli in ma?king important captaincy decisions. The likes of Udana and Chris Morris will strengthen their bowling department.

RCB received a huge blow with the exit of their latest recruit, Kane Richardson. Leg-spinner Adam Zampa will replace his Australian teammate at the Challengerscamp.

RCB will face-off against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in their first match of IPL 2020 on 21st September in Dubai. They will be in search of thei??r maiden IPL trophy. The Challengers are one of the only ?three teams to participate in all twelve seasons of IPL, without securing a title victory.

During the auctions for the 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) held last year, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) turned out? to be quite active with some exciting recruit?ments.

The Bengaluru-based franchise added Australian captain, Aaron Finch, in their arsenal. RCB also decided to strengthen their bowling and balance of the squad with the recruitment of Chris Morris, Kane Richardson and Isuru Udana.

Now, RCB head coach Simon Katich has opened up about the reason w??hy the franchise decided to shell out INR 4.4 crores for the services of Finch.

Obviously, when we identified players whom we were looking to bring in at the auction, we were looking at experienced international cricketers at the top of their game. Obviously, being a small auction, there were only a certain number of players available but they were some outstanding options at the auctions last year,” Katich told India Today.

Aaron Finch was high on that list, given what he has been able to achieve for Australia as captain but also a player over the last number of years. He is one of the top-ranked T20I batsmen in the world. He is a very good player of spin. The other thing is he brings leadership to a group.

RCB – yet to clinch maiden IPL title

RCB, along with Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) and Delhi Capitals (formerly: Delhi Daredevils), have failed to clinch their maiden IPL title, despite taking part in all tw?elve seasons.

Under Kohli, RCB’s lopsided balance in favour of batsmen has proved costly for them. With the presence of Finch and AB de Villiers, Katich reckoned that Kohli’s workload would be shared effectively.

“It’s not just Aaron Finch. We have got a number of senior players. Obviously AB de Villiers has been at RCB for a number of years now and done very well over the years. He is a senior player who is going to provide that leadership as well for Virat and any help that he needs.”

“Virat Kohli has obviously got a huge amount of leadership experience with the Indian team and RCB and hopefully the core group around him will be able to take the load off him from playing point of view also when it comes to getting the group to gel and bonding with the group,” Katich concluded.
