In Match 12 of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, held at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Wednesday (October 9), India delivered a powerful performance to secure a decisive 82-run victory over Sri Lanka. After setting a formidable target of 173 runs, India’s bowlers dismantled the Sri Lankan batting order, limiting them to just 90 runs in 19.5 overs. Harmanpreet? Kaur?/strong>s aggressive knock of 52 runs off 27 balls was the highlight of India’s innings, earning her the Player of the Match award.

Batting brilliance by Harmanpreet Kaur

Opting to bat first, India capitalized on a strong start, led by openers Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana. The duo laid the foundation with a solid partnership of 98 runs. Verma displayed aggressive intent, scoring 43 runs off 40 balls, while Mandhana, who played with finesse and fluency, contributed 50 runs from just 38 deliveries. The Indian middle order continued the momentum, with Harmanpreet coming in and accelerating the scoring with her power-hitting, hitting eight boundaries and one-six in her quick-fire innings. Jemimah Rodrigues added a valuable 16 runs before being dismissed, but Harmanpreet’s late onslaught propelled India to a total of 172 runs for the loss of three wickets.

Sri Lanka struggles with the bat

Chasing 173 runs, Sri Lanka Women faced immediate setbacks as they lost their first two wickets without scoring a run. Renuka Singh, leading India’s bowling attack, struck early, claiming the crucial wickets of Vishmi Gunaratne and Chamari Athapaththu. The situation worsened for Sri Lanka as Harshitha Samarawickrama followed suit, leaving them reeling at 6/3. Kavisha Dilhari and Anushka Sanjeewani tried to stabilize the innings, but the pressure of the required run rate took its toll. Dilhari managed to score 21 runs off 22 balls, while Sanjeewani contributed 20 runs off 22 balls. However, the Indian bowlers, particularly Renuka, Asha Sobhana and Arundhati Reddy, maintained t?ight lines and l?engths, preventing any substantial partnerships from forming.

The viral drop and Aliya Riaz’s reaction

The match featured a memorable and amusing incident that quickly spread across social media. During Pakistan’s innings, Indian fielder Asha Sobhana dropped a simple catch, sparking a humorous reaction from Pakistan’s Aliya Riaz, who was seated in the dressing room.

The moment unfolded after the Powerplay in the first innings when Pakistan opener Muneeba Ali, on 14, attempted to play a scoop-flick over fine leg for a boundary. She mistimed the sh??ot, resulting in a straightforward catch opportunity for Sobhana. However, much to everyone’s surprise, Sobhana missed the catch.

The camera immediately cut to Aliya in the dressing room, who burst into laughter and placed her hands on her face, unab??le to be??lieve that Sobhana had dropped such an easy chance. The clip of this incident soon went viral, bringing a lighter moment to the tension-filled match.

In a low-scoring encounter at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 on Sunday (October 3), India registered their first win by defeating Pakistan by 6 wickets in Dubai. Pakistan posted a modest total of 105/8, with Nida Dar top-scoring for her side. India, led by Shafali Verma’s steady 32 and Harmanpreet Kaur’s quickfire 29, chased down the target with seven balls to spare. Despite a valiant all-round effort from Pakistan captain Fatima Sana, India ??proved too strong, clinching victory with ease.

Muneeba Ali and Nida Dar lead Pakistan’s innings

Pakistan’s batting performance in the match against India faced challenges from the start. Muneeba Ali, Pakistan’s wicketkeeper-batter, tried to stabilize the innings with a composed knock of 17 off 26 balls, hitting two boundaries. However, Gull Feroza was dismissed for a duck, setting Pakistan back early. Sidra Amin scored 8 off 11 balls, but the team’s struggle continued as they lost wickets at regular intervals. Nida Dar top-scored with a gritty 28 off 34 balls, though she could not accelerate the innings as needed. Lower-order contributions from Fatima, who hit 13 off 8 balls, and Syeda Aroob Shah ?(14 off 17 balls) helped Pakistan reach a modest total of 105/8 in their 20 overs.

Arundhati Reddy and Shreyanka Patil star in India’s bowling attack

India’s bowling, led by Arundhati Reddy and Shreyanka Patil, restricted Pakistan to a manageable total. Reddy was the standout bowler, claiming 3 wickets for 19 runs in her four overs, including the crucial scalps of Nida and Aliya Riaz. Shreyanka Patil delivered an economical spell, taking 2 wickets for just 12 runs, including the dismissal of Muneeba. Renuka Singh and Deepti Sharma supported well with a wicket each, while India’s bowlers maintained pressure by taking wickets at key moments. Pakistan struggled to build partnerships, and India’s disciplined bowling performance left them defending a modest target of 106.

Shafali Verma, Harmanpreet Kaur steady knock anchors India’s chase

India’s chase of 106 was anchored by Shafali, who played a steady knock of 32 off 35 balls. Though Smriti Mandhana was dismissed early for just 7 runs by Sadia Iqbal, Shafali held her ground, hitting three boundaries during her stay. Jemimah Rodrigues contributed with a patient 23 off 28 balls, adding a crucial partnership with Shafali. Harmanpreet, who had to retire hurt after scoring a quick 29 off 24 balls, pla??yed a vital role in steering India close to the target. In the end, India comfortably reached 108/4 in 18.5 overs, winning by 6 wickets with 7 balls to spare.

Fatima Sana’s all-round effort goes in vain for Pakistan

Pakistan’s captain Fatima gave an impressive all-round performance, taking 2 wickets for 23 runs after her earlier contribution with the bat. She dismissed key Indian batters Jemimah and Richa Ghosh, but her efforts were not enough to turn the tide in Pakistan’s favour. Sadia also bowled well, taking 1 wicket for 23 runs, but the target of 106 was not enough to challenge India. Despite their bowlers?valiant efforts, Pakistan fell short.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) etched their name in history on Sunday, finally breaking their trophy drought across franchise leagues by clinching the Women’s Premier League (WPL) title. They defeated Delhi Capitals (DC) by a convi??ncing eight-wicket margin at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

Successful run-chase by Royal Challengers Bangalore

Chasing a modest target of 114 set by DC, RCB openers Smriti Mandhana and Sophie Devine laid a solid foundation for the chase. Mandhana anchored the innings with a composed knock, while Devine provided the early impetus with her aggressive batting style. Ellyse Perryand Richa Ghosh also chipped in with valuable runs later in the innings, guiding RCB comfortably over the finish line in the final ov??er.

RCB spinners restrict DC for 113

Earlier, it was the RCB bowling attack that shone brightly. Off-spinner Shreyanka Patil emerged as the wrecker-in-chief, claiming a career-best four wickets and restricting DC to a paltry 113 runs in their allotted overs. Left-arm spinner Sophie Molineux also played a crucial role, picking up a crucial wicket-taking over that dismissed the dangerous trio of Shafali Verma, Jemimah Rodrigues and Alice Capsey, effectively derailing the DC batting momentum. Molineux’s three wickets, combined with Patil’s haul, propelled RCB to a position of dominance.

This victory marks a historic moment for RCB, who have struggled to secure a title in the men’s Indian Premier League (IPL) despite reaching the finals on multiple ?occasions. Their triumph in the WPL signifies a significant accomplishment and will be a huge confidence booster for the franchise moving forward.
