Pakistan cricket has once again been plunged into turmoil, with former international cricketer Basit Ali making explosive allegations against ex-captain Shoaib Malik. In ?a video posted on his YouTube channel, Ali accused Malik of deliberately losing a match during his playing career, sparking widespread controversy and raising serious questions about the integrity of the sport in Pakistan.

Shoaib Malik accused of deliberate match-fixing

Basit’s claims against Malik came on the heels of Pakistan’s shocking 0-2 Test series defeat to Bangladesh last month. The loss, the first time Pakistan had ever lost a series against Bangladesh, had already sparked widespread criticism and calls for change within t?he cricket fraternity.

In his video, Ali did not mince words, accusing Malik of “deliberately losing a match” and slamming the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for appointing him as the mentor of the Stallions team in the Champions One-Day Cup.

Ali also criticized the PCB for “appointing people who cannot think about the country.”

The 2005 National T20 cup controversy

The match Basit Ali was referring to appears to be the infamous 2005 National T20 Cup game between the Sialkot Stallions and the Karachi Zebras. In that match, Malik, then leading the Stallions, made the controversial decision to concede the game despite needing just 25 runs from the last four overs. Malik’s decision raised eyebrows and sparked speculation of match-fixing.

Malik later defended his actions, claiming that it was a deliberate act of protest against a prior ruling in the league that had disadvantaged the Stallions. However, his explanation failed to convince many, and he was fined for hi?s actions.

Growing concerns about corruption in Pakistan cricket

Ali’s allegations against Malik are just the latest in a series of scandals to rock Pakistan cricket. In recent years, the sport in Pakistan has been plagued by match-fixing, corruption, and internal disputes. The PCB has struggled to restore the credibility of the sport and has faced criticism for its handling of these issues.

The allegations against Malik, a high-profile former captain, have added to the growing concerns about corruption in Pakistan cricket. If the allegations are ??proven to be true, it would be a ??major blow to the reputation of the sport in the country.

The PCB has not yet responded to Ali’s allegations. It remains to be seen how the board will address this serious matter and whether it will launch an investigation into the claims made by the former international cricketer.

Former Pakistan cricket captain Shoaib Malik has passionately appealed to the Indian cricket team to participate in the Champions Trophy 2025, which is scheduled to be held in Pakistan. In a recent interview on the Pakistani YouTube channel Salim Khaleeq, Mal??ik emphasized the importance of separating sports from politics, urging both nations to resolve? bilateral issues independently.

Shoaib Malik: A bridge between two nations

?Known for his exceptional cricketing career and his ability to connect with fans across the border, Malik has always been a symbol of Indo-Pak cricketing camaraderie. His latest appeal is seen as a significant gesture aimed at fostering better relations between the two cricket-crazy nations.

“Whatever reservations there are between the countries, that’s a separate issue and should be solved separately. Politics shouldn’t come into sports. The Pakistan team went to India last year, and now it’s a good opportunity for the Indian team too. I think there are many players in the Indian team who haven’t played in Pakistan, so it would be great for them. Hum bahut acche log hai (we are good people). We’re very hospitable people, so I’m sure the Indian team should come,” Malik said, underlining Pakistan’s hospitality and its eagerness to welcome the Indian team.

He reminisced about the Pakistan team’s visit to India for the 2023 ODI World Cup and expressed hope for a reciprocal gesture.

Malik opines on politics to stay out of sports

Malik’s plea comes as the political climate between India and Pakistan remains tense. However, the former cricketer believes that sports should transcend political differences, offering a platform for peace and understanding. He stressed that cricket has the power to unite people and build bridges, urging both countries to prioritize the spirit of the game.

Malik rules out his return to Pakistan cricket

While appealing to India to play in Pakistan, Malik clarified his stance on returning to international cri??cket. The veteran all-rounder, who retired from all game formats in 2022??, expressed satisfaction with his cricketing journey.

“No, I am happy and satisfied after playing for so many years. I have no interest in playing for Pakistan again,” Malik asserted. He emphasized tha??t he is enjoying his retirement and is content with his contributions to Pakistani cricket.

A call for unity through cricket

Malik’s appeal has sparked a debate on the possibility of India participating in the Champions Trophy in Pakistan. While fans on both sides of the border have welcomed the gesture, political considerations remain a major hurdle.

As the cricketing world eagerly awaits the ICC’s decision on the venue for the Champions Trophy 2025, Malik’s call for unity through cricket has resonated with millions. His statement serves as a reminder of the immense power of sports to bring people together and foster goodwill.

Babar Azam has recently faced criticism for the team’s lack of cohesion and creativity as Pakistan‘s performance has significantly declined in the white-ball format. His leadership has come under intense scrutiny, with calls from the many cricket experts for him to be replaced as captain.

Babar Azam’s poor record as a captain

This isn’t the first time Babar has faced such pressure; he stepped down from the captaincy in all formats after Pakistan’s failure in the ODI World Cup 2023, only to return to the role earlier this year. However, Babar’s captaincy was again questioned following Pakistan’s embarrassing first-round exit in the T20 World Cup 2024, which their arch-rivals India ultimately won.

Personal relationship and communication

Now, former Pakistan all-rounder Shoaib Malik has? publicly addressed the ongoing challenges faced by Babar, emphasizing the need for the star batter to remain resilient. In an exclusive interview with Cricket Pakistan, Malik expressed his support for Babar and shared his thoughts on leadership roles within the team.

“Ups and downs are a part of life, especially when you are a cricketer from the subcontinent. He needs to stay strong during this time. I know he has a personality that embraces challenges; right now, it’s a downtime, but good times will come too,” Malik said.

Malik reassured fans and critics that despite recent issues, his relationship with Babar remains strong. “It’s not that he is far from me; that’s definitely not the case. Whenever he needs to talk or I need to talk, we do,” Malik explained, dispelling rumors of any rift.

Shoaib Malik’s views on Captaincy

Discussing Babar’s role as captain, Malik suggested that Babar might benefit from focusing solely on his batting. “As for his captaincy, my firm stance is that he should play only as a player. That’s my opinion. When he plays as a player, he can do wonders for the team. But in my opinion, he should stay away from leadership,” the 42-year-old added.

Endorsement of potential candidate

Malik also endorsed Fakhar Zaman as a potential candidate for captaincy as Fakhar, known for his aggressive style of play, could bring a fresh approach to Pakistan’s leadership. “According to today’s fearless cricket, Fakhar Zaman should be considered for white-ball captaincy because he has the sense and leadership capacity for it,” Malik concluded.

Pakistan, led by Babar Azam, faced a 23-run d??efeat, thereby t?railing 0-1 in the 4-match series after the initial game was washed out.

Calls for strategic changes

“This is not PSL this is international cricket that too, just before T20 World Cup. IMO, the batting order should be… Fakhar Rizwan Babar Azam Iftkar Imad Shadab. Captain needs to utilise the options on bench wisely,” wrote Malik on X.

T?he former Pakistan captain also emphasized ??the need to give finishers like Azam Khan and Iftikhar more time to settle at the crease.

“Moving forward, the captain should give time & enough overs to Azam & Iftikhar to settle first, expecting them to score 12-14 right away is unfair. All the best for the remaining matches!!!,” he added.
