Shoaib Akhtar, the legendary Pakistani fast bowler, is celebrated as one of the most fearsome pacers in the history of cricket. Known as the “Rawalpindi Express” for his blistering speed and devastating yorkers and bouncers, Akhtar terrorized batters around the world throughout his career. His ability to consistently bowl at lightning speeds made him a formidable opponent, and he holds the distinction of being the fastest bowler in the history of the game.

Shoaib Akhtar’s international career

Akhtar’s international career began in November 1997 with a Test match against the West Indies. Over the next 14?? years, he would go on to play 219 international matches, claiming 438 wickets at an average of 25.02 and an economy rate of 4.11. He retired from international cricket in March 2011 after an illustrious career th??at left an indelible mark on the sport.

Here are the five fastest balls ever bowled by Akhtar in international cricket:

5. 154.3 km/h vs Australia, 1999

In 1999, during a Test match against Australia in Hobart, Akhtar was still carving out his place in the cricketing world. Facing a star-studded Australian batting lineup that included Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist, Matthew Hayden, and Mark Waugh, Akhtar delivered a fiery spell. One delivery in particular, clocked at 154.3 km/h, was a standout moment, showcasing his raw pace a??nd potential to dominate even the best in the world.

4. 155.2 km/h vs Netherlands, 2003

During the 28th match of the 2003 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup, Pakistan faced the Netherlands. It was in this match that Pakistani bowler unleashed one of his fastest deliveries, recorded at 155.2 km/h. Akhtar’s lethal pace proved too much for the Dutch batsmen, as he took three wickets in the match, further solidifying his reputation as the fastest bowler on the planet.

3. 158.4 km/h vs England, 2003

The 2003 ODI World Cup was a stage where the veteran cricketer truly demonstrated his speed. In the 23rd match of the tournament, Pakistan faced England. It was here that Akhtar bowled a delivery at an astonishing 158.4 km/h to England’s Nick Knight. This delivery was one of the fastest in the tournament and left the cricketing world in awe of Akhtar’s pace.

2. 159.5 km/h vs England, 2003

Just when it seemed Akhtar couldn’t get any faster, he did. In same match against England during the 2003 World Cup, he bowled yet another scorching delivery, this time clocking in at 159.5 km/h. This ball, once again delivered to Nick, was a testament to Akhtar’s unmatched ability to consistently bowl at speeds few could even dream of.

1. 161.3 km/h vs England, 2003

Akhtar’s crowning achievement came during the ODI World Cup 2003 edition in Durban, South Africa. In the similar match against England, Akhtar bowled the fastest delivery ever recorded in international cricket â€?a mind-boggling 161.3 km/h. This historic ball was the final delivery of the third over in a spell that had already seen Akhtar push the boundaries of pace bowling. The delivery cemented Akhtar’s legacy as the fastest bowler in cricket history and remains a benchmark for speed in the sport.

Ahmed Shehzad, a former cricketer, recently revealed his ultimate Pakistan XI during a local channel show, focusing solely on legends from previous generations as current players failed to find a place in Shehzad’s line-up.

Pakistan’s opening duo

Shehzad chose Saeed Anwar and Majid Khan as his opening pair. He praised Anwar’s versatility across the ground and admired Majid’s stylish batting and numerous records from his era.

“Saeed Anwar was a universally loved player who could dominate from any position on the field. I’ve watched many videos of Majid Khan, and his batting style was elegant with numerous records from his era,” Shehzad was quoted as saying by Pakistan Today.

Middle-Order Maestros

In the middle order, Shehzad included Zaheer Abbas, known for his aesthetic cover drives and dominance over bowlers. Younis Khan, recognized for his diligent work ethic and impressive stats, was a must-have for Shehzad. Javed Miandad, a childhood hero of Shehzad’s, found his place due to his undeniable impact. Shahid Afridi‘s dual ability to smash sixes and bowl spin made him a challenging but deserving choice. Moin Khan was se?lected as the wicket-keeper for his neat takes behind the stumps.

“He [Zaheer Abbas] was pleasing to the eye, the cover drive was great and used to dominate the bowlers. Younis Khan was a hard-working player with very good stats. Having him on any side is icing on the cake. I know I have placed him below but how can I miss Javed Miandad? Growing up watching him play, I had to adjust to him somewhere in my team. Shahid Afridi is the batter who can hit sixes and bowl spin. It was a tough call but for the wicketkeeper spot, Moin Khan used to take neat takes with the ball going smoothly in his gloves,” the 32-year-old added.

Bowling powerhouses

Shehzad’s bowling lineup featured Saqlain Mushtaq, credited as the ‘Doosra’ pioneer, for his match-winning performances and impressive statistics. Wasim Akram, an iconic figure in cricket, was an automatic selection due to his legendary achievements. Mohammad Zahid, known for his pace and skill, added depth to the pace attack alongside Sh??oaib Akhtar, one of the fastest bo?wlers in cricket history.

“Saqlain has won us matches and has great stats. It’s impossible if someone is playing in their childhood and is not following Wasim Akram and his achievements. Zahid played very little cricket and I remember once Brian Lara said, he is the fastest I have ever played,” Shehzad concluded.

No place for Babar Azam

Shehzad’s decision to exclude current captain Babar Azam from his ultimate Pakistan XI and other high-profile platers like Shaheen Afridi shows his doubt on the potential on the current crop, especially given Babar’s stature as one of Pakistan’s modern cricketing icons known for his consistent run-scoring and leadership qualities.

However, Pakistan faced an embarrassing defeat in the T20 World Cup 2024, exiting at the group stage. Throughout the tournament, Shehzad’s frustration over Babar’s captaincy has become increasingly apparent. Several media reports indicated tension between Shehzad and skipper Babar, with whom he had previously shared the field in age-group cricket.

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 has reached its thrilling conclusion, with South Africa and India set to face?? off in the highly anticipated final. The match will take place at Kensington Oval in Barbados on June 29. Both teams have displayed exceptional skill and determinatio?n throughout the tournament, making the final a highly anticipated event for cricket fans worldwide.

Exceptional performances by both teams

Throughout the tournament, both India and South Africa have displayed ex??traordinary skill and determination, maintaining unbeaten records. Their consistent performances have set the stage for what promises to be an electrifying final.

Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, India have shown tactical brilliance and a powerful batting lineup. Meanwhile, South Africa, captained by Aiden Markram, have showcased a balanced team with both strong batting an?d bowling units.

Shoaib Akhtar picks his winner

Ahead of the much-awaited clash, former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has revealed his prediction. Akhtar expressed his strong belief that India deserves to win the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. He even congratulated India in advance, stating that they should have won the last two World Cups and are well-positioned to win this one. Akhtar emphasized India’s superior performance and consistency throughout the tournament, highlighting their deservingness of the title.

Spin challenge for the Proteas

Akhtar also analyzed the strategic aspect of the final, suggesting that if South Africa wins the toss, they should choose to bat first to gain a slight advantage. He pointed out that South Africa, despite their strong performance, might struggle against India’s formidable spinners. Akhtar’s confidence in India’s chances stems from his belief that South African batters will find it challenging to score against India’s spin attack, reinforcing his prediction that India should emerge victorious.

“If South Africa win the toss, they should look to bat first. Then you still have a slight margin or else, they are playing their very first final, but after this performance, even South Africa will be scared. Who will score runs in front of these spinners? India should definitely win this one,” added Akhtar.

Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has confidently predicted that India will win the ongoing T20 World Cup. Akhtar’s admiration

In a video posted on his YouTube channel, Akhtar expressed his admiration for the Indian team and Rohit  in particular. He lamented India’s missed opportunity to win the ODI World Cup 2023 but is optimistic about their chances in the T20 World Cup. He believed Rohit Sha?rma des??erves to lift the trophy this time,.

“Well done India, this is your World Cup now. You should win this and the World Cup should stay in the subcontinent. You should have won the previous too and this too. You deserve it one hundred percent. My support is with you. Rohit’s intent is good and his conscience is clear. He deserves to lift the trophy,” Akhtar said.

He also highlighted that India’s determination to defeat Australia stemmed from the heartbreak of losing the ODI World Cup final last year.

“What a comprehensive win for India. They had been going through depression after they lost a World Cup that they should have won. They had lost to Australia in the final and that depression turned into obsession. They wanted to hit back at Australia,” Akhtar concluded.

Following Pakistan‘s disappointing early exit from the T20 World Cup 2024 held in the United States of America (USA) and West Indies, legendary pacer Shoaib Akhtar has voiced strong criticism of Babar Azam‘s captaincy. Pakistan, the 2009 champions and finalists in the 2007 and 2022 editions, suffered shocking defeats to the USA and arch-rivals India, failing to progress beyond the group stage. Babar, the team’s star batter and captain, not only failed in his leadership role but also struggled as a player, managing only 122 runs in his four innings at the mega event.

Captaincy changes and criticism

Earlier last year, Babar relinquished his captaincy following the team’s poor show in the ODI World Cup 2023. Shaheen Afridi was appointed as the T20I skipper but was sacked after just one series due to a change in PCB management, leading to Babar’s reappointment as captain. Akhtar criticized this decision, stating that Babar did not qualify for the job and questioned the judgment of those who reinstated him. The former paceman emphasized that Babar’s poor performance as a player and captain is a significant factor in Pakistan’s early exit from the tournament.

“Who made Babar Azam captain at first place? Who was the Einstein by the way? I need to know that guy. Did he actually qualify for the job or not? Did he even know a thing or two about captaincy?,” Shoaib was quoted as saying by the NDTV Sports.

“I have been saying that Babar is not a captain material. What is going to happen to Babar now? He is going to come down at No.4. He has to finish the games. He has to win the games. If he doesn’t, he will not be able to keep his place in T20s. I am telling you right now,” the 48-year-added.

Shoaib Akhtar’s critique of Babar Azam

Akhtar didn’t mince his words when discussing Babar’s batting performance. He pointed out flaws in Babar’s technique and match-finishing skills, advising him to work on these areas to improve his game. Akhtar asserted that if Babar does not learn from his mistakes, he risks losing his place in the side. He emphasized the importance of Babar taking responsibility and performing on the big stage to prove his critics wrong and regain the confidence of his team and fans.

“He will not be able to keep his place in ODIs because he has to finish the games. The ‘finisher’ Babar Azam needs to come out. That’s where his character comes out. That’s where the character of Babar Azam is gonna come out. In times to come, that kind of pressure, he needs to take. I am bluntly saying that to Babar, Babar you are going to remain a superstar but start and get to know how to finish the games,” Shoaib concluded.

In a thrilling T20 World Cup 2024 Group A clash at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas on Thursday (June 6) Pakistan suffered a shocking defeat against the co-hosts, United States of America (USA). Former Pakistan pace sensation Shoaib Akhtar expressed his deep disappointment over the outcome, as Babar Azam & Co. succumbed to the USA’s remarkable performance.

Pakistan falls to USA in T20 World Cup 2024 opener

Pakistan’s downfall was starkly evident as the match went into a Super Over after the co-hosts matched the Men in Green’s score of 159 in the stipulated 20 overs. In a turn of events, USA prevailed, posting 18/1 in their Super Over and setting a 19-run target for Pakistan’s chase.

Adding to Pakistan’s woes, Mohammad Amir‘s poor bowling saw him concede seven wides in a crucial over. The chase, aiming for 19 runs, fizzled as Pakistan could only manage 13/1 in their Super Over. Saurabh Netravalkar emerged as the star performer??, defending 18 runs to secure a historic win for the USA.

USA’s triumph: Monank Patel leads from the front

The USA’s victory was a result of exceptional teamwork and outstanding leadership, with skipper Monank Patel playing a pivotal role. Patel’s captain’s innings of 50 runs off 38 balls set the tone for the USA’s chase, with key contributions from Andries Gous and Aaron Jones.

Nitish Kumar‘s composed performance in the final over rescued the co-hosts from defeat against Pakistan, as he leveled the score and forced the match into a Super Over. The USA’s historic win not only strengthened their position in the group stage but also marked a significant moment for c??ricket in the Unit??ed States.

Shoaib Akhtar’s reaction: Disappointment and praise

Sharing his sentiments on social media platform X, Former speedster Akhtar highlighted Pakistan’s missed opportunities and the impressive resilience shown by the USA team. While acknowledging the valiant efforts of teams bowlers, particularly Amir, Akhtar praised the USA’s exceptional performance and emphasized that Pakistan was outplayed by the co-hosts. He expressed disappointment over Pakistan’s inability to capitalize on crucial moments in the game, leading to their unexpected defeat.

“Disappointing loss for Pakistan. We are not off to a good start, losing to USA. We repeated history, like we did against Bangladesh in the 1999 World Cup. Unfortunately, Pakistan never deserved to win. The reason is that USA played very well and they were in a commanding position. Amir saved the match. He and Shaheen tried. They [US] won 37 overs of the contest, if we look at the overall picture. Unfortunately, we couldn’t pull it off,” Akhtar said.
