India’s fast bowler Mohammed Shami made his much-awaited comeback to professional cricket after a year-long injury hiatus, playing for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy against Madhya Pradesh at the Holkar Stadium in Indore on Wednesday.

Madhya Pradesh won the toss and opted to field first, leaving Bengal in a difficult position early on. Bengal were reduced to 33/3 and 79/5, with no significant partnerships forming until Shahbaz Ahmed and captain Anustup Majumdar put on 96 for the sixth wicket. Shahbaz top-scored with a valuable 92, he??lping Bengal reach a total of 228 all out.

As the evening session beg??an on day one, all eyes were on Shami, who was making his first appearance since the 2023 World Cup final against Australia on November 19. It also marked his return to first-class cricket since playing in the World Test Championship final? against Australia in June of the same year.
