Former New Zealand all-rounder Scott Styris has raised eyebrows with his assessment of India‘s recent captaincy appointments. In an interview with India Today, Styris suggested that Suryakumar Yadav‘s elevation to the T20I captaincy might be a temporary measure, with Shubman Gill being groomed as the long-term successor.

Shubman Gill: The future captain

Styris is impressed with Gill’s leadership potential, given his role as captain of the IPL franchise Gujarat Titans.

“Look, a vice-captain is just someone who is learning all about leadership and how to run a cricket team. I have no problem with Shubman Gill being vice-captain. He captains in the IPL. He captains a lot of big names, so there’s not an issue with that,” the all-rounder said.

However, the Kiwi legend also cautioned that Gill’s batting needs to mature further before he can shoulder the full weight of captaincy.

“Shubman Gill has a lot of growth yet to do in his own game. We’ve seen some really high-quality performances for India, but it’s now about consistency across those three formats. So it’s almost like letting him learn how to be a captain. We’ve got an eye on you in the future, but at the moment we still just want you to concentrate on your cricket,” Styris pointed out.

Suryakumar Yadav: A bridge to the future

The veteran Kiwi believes that the appointment of Surya as captain is a strategic move by the Indian team management. Suryakumar’s explosive batting and experience have made him a valuable asset to the team, and his captaincy role is seen as a logical progression. But, according to Styris, it’s a stop-gap arrangement.

“I think he’s a short-term option. I don’t think Gambhir has a natural captain among the players that he has right now. So, he’s buying himself time as to who will be the next long-term captain,” the cricketer-turned-commentator stated.

A calculated gamble

The former New Zealand all-rounder?? believes that the Indian selectors have played their cards wisely.

“You know, someone like Gill I think could do the job for 10 years for India, but he’s not quite ready right now, so I think it was a really smart decision to bring in someone with a bit more experience. Someone like Suryakumar make him captain. If he does a decent enough job, then he might be the captain at the next T20 World Cup. And then after that, you can look at Gill or any of the other potential options around. But yeah, I think it’s a really clever decision,” he concluded.

Styris’ comments have sparked debate among cricket fans and experts alike. While some believe that Suryakumar is a capable leader who can guide the team to success, others feel that Gill’s potential is being overlooked.

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) faced a crushing defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the 57th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 on Wednesday. SRH exhibited a spectacular performance, securing a resounding 10-wicket victory over LSG.

Viral video sparks outrage

However, the post-match discussions were dominated not by the match result but by a controversial incident involving LSG captain KL Rahul and team owner Sanjiv Goenka. A video capturing a heated exchange between the two quickly went viral on social media platforms, sparking widespread outrage among f??ans and pundits alike.

Public reprimand draws criticism

Critics lambasted Goenka for publicly reprimanding Rahul, arguing that such confrontations should be handled privately to maintain team mor?ale. The incident reignited debates about the appropriate conduct of team owners and their interactions with players, particularly in the high-pressure environment of professional sports.

Expert opinions highlight importance of privacy

Experts chimed in on the controversy, emphasizing the importance of privacy in resolving internal team matters. During a discussion on Jio Cinema, commentators underscored that public confrontations only serve to exacer?bate tensions and create unnecessary distractions for the team.

“You always feel these conversations should be happening behind closed doors. There are so many cameras around the stadium and they miss nothing. You know KL Rahul is now gonna go to press conferences and other things and potentially explain what’s been discussed here,” remarked one expert.

KL Rahul praised for professionalism

Despite the intense scrutiny, KL Rahul received praise for h??is composed demeanor during the altercation. Commentator Scott Styris commended Rahul for maintaining his professionalism amidst the challenging circumsta??nces, highlighting his ability to handle pressure both on and off the field.

“He has done well to keep his cool here. I think you are bang on,” acknowledged Styris, acknowledging Rahul’s maturity in navigating the situation.

As the schedule for the second leg of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 is out, the anticipation and excitement among cricket enthusiasts is at an all-time high. With the unveiling of the complete tournament fixtures by the BCCI, speculations about the potential winners have begun to circulate. Adding his voice to the chorus of predictions is none other than former New Zealand cricketer and IPL veteran, Scott Styris.

Scott Styris?stint in IPL

Styris, who once donned the yellow jersey of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), has shared his insights on which team he believes will emerge victorious in IPL 2024. Having experienced the intensity and thrill of the IPL firsthand during his playing days, Styris’ predictions carry weight and intrigue.

Styris predicts the winners of IPL 2024

Despite the tournament being in its nascent stage, Styris has confidently singled out the Chennai Super Kings as the team most likely to secure a spot in the finals and clinch the coveted trophy. For Styris, this prediction holds sentimental value as it could potentially mark a fairy tale ending for the legendary MS Dhoni, who migh??t consider retirement after this season.

“I think with CSK, it’ll be the same again. They’ve got every chance to be there in the final. Potentially, let’s not say ‘definitely’ that MSD could go out as a winner,” stated Styris on JioCinema

Th??e words from the former Kiwi all-rounder echo the sentiment shared by many fans, who would love to see Dhoni bid adieu to the IPL with yet another title under his belt.

Former New Zealand all-rounder Scott Styris believes Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana has the potential to outperform legendary Sri Lanka pacer Lasith Malinga. Pathirana has been a standout player for CSK in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, taking seven wickets in six games.

Styris told Jio C?inema that the twenty-year-old CSK fast-bowler m?ight surpass Malinga. This season, Pathirana is bowling at an economy of 8.2 and averages of 27.57; he is continuously bowling in the death overs for CSK.

“I think Pathirana could be better than Malinga. I accept that it’s a massive call because he’s too early in his career,” Styris said.

The 47-year-old added, though Pathirana’s accuracy is lower than Malinga’s, he still has the raw pace that can trouble batters. Styris further stated that Malinga was performing effectively when he was bowling at 145 kph. Malinga has 170 wickets in 122 games, making him one of the most effective bowlers to ever play in the IPL.

“He’s not as accurate as Malinga yet, but Malinga was at his best when he was bowling at 145kph. And he only had about three or four years where that was the case. When he had that speed, and then the change-ups came, you had to respect that pace. When his top speed was down to 135, you could probably look at the slower ball more and react to the Yorkers,” Styris added.

Pathirana, according to Styris, is useful for both CSK and Sri Lanka, and he naturally has a lot of speed. With his slinging action that resembles Malinga’s, the Sri Lankan pacer has bowled over 150kph several times this season.

“What we’ve seen with Pathirana is that he’s bowling at 145, 146, 148kph, so he has that natural advantage. He hits the yorkers pretty well. As he naturally evolves and gets more experience, he can hit those yorkers with that action as much as Malinga, but with a quicker speed and the ability for change-ups. He’s the exciting talent for Sri Lanka, and exciting talent for CSK,” the New Zealander added further.

Ahead of the resumption of IPL 2021, former New Zealand all-rounder Scott Styris has shared ?his prediction for all the eight teams.

The 14th season is set to resume on September 9 in Dubai. Defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) will take on Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the first game of the UAE leg.

Rohit Sharma-led MI have won the last two seasons and will be eyeing to create history in IPL 2021. They could become the first team in tournament history to win three titl??es in a row.

Last year, MI became the second?? team after CSK to defend their title. All the other teams will be desperate to clinch the trophy too.

The likes of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Delhi Capitals (DC) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) will be eyeing their first-ever IPL title. On the other hand, Rajasthan Royals (RR) hav??e failed to get their hands on the coveted trophy since the inaugural season in 2008.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have not won the title since 2014 and 2016, respectively. Meanwhile, MS Dhoni’s CSK will be desperate to go all gun blazing after their disastrous campaign last year when they failed to qualify for the playoffs.

Scott Styris’ prediction for IPL 2021

Predictably, Styris placed MI in the first place, followed by last year’s runners-up DC and on third are three-times champion CSK. Styris further named the rest of the teams in the following order – RCB, PKBS, SRH and RR.

The Royals were unhappy to see themselves at the bottom of the table in Styris’ power rankings. However, the franchise didn’t take it lightly and responded to Syris with a cheeky reply.

RR used a Bollywood-inspired meme, showing a picture from the movie ‘Love Aaj Kal 2’, featuring actress Sara Ali Khan. “Tum mujhe tang karne lage ho” read the text on the image.

Former New Zealand cricketer Scott Styris has rated every franchise ahead of the upcoming second ??leg of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021.

The second phase of the fourteenth season will resume on September 19 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Reigning champions Mumbai Indians (MI) will take on MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the first game.

Styris pointed out the strengths and weaknesses of every team and gave his views about their chances as well. Notably, the former Kiwi cricketer had previously als??o predicted the rankings of the IPL teams.

Styris put Rohit Sharma’s MI at the top spot in his rankings. The Mumbai-based franchise is the most successful team in the cash-rich league, having won the prestigious IPL trophy five times. Styris placed IPL 2020 runners up Delhi Capitals (DC) in the second position. Following DC, the Super Kings were ranked as the third team, while Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) were fourth.

When it comes to the bottom four teams, Styris put Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the fifth position, followed by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and Rajasthan Royals (RR). Even last year, the cricketer-turned-commentator had pl??aced RR at the bottom, which eventually turned out to be correct.

In another tweet, Styris also explained the reason behind giving such rankings to the IPL teams. He termed Mumbai as a settled team for the number one spot, while for DC, Styris felt the comeback of Shreyas Iyer is an advantage for them.

Similarly, Styris also addressed CSK as a settled unit, while for RCB, the former Black Caps all-rounder showed a bit of uncertainty regarding the overseas combination. He expressed the same concern for PBKS with questions over Nicholas Pooran’s form.

Regarding SRH, Styris displayed his disappointment for the absence of Jonny Bairstow, but he was happy to see David Warner’s possible return to the team. Styris placed KKR and RR at the bottom two spots and explained that the absence of their overseas players are the biggest sign of worry. While KKR will miss the services of Pat Cummins, RR will miss Jos Buttler, Jofra Archer and Ben Stokes.

Former New Zealand cricketer Scott Styris and current Kiwi all-rounder James Neesham took a cheeky dig at England after the English football team lost the 2020 Euro Cup final against Italy. The?? summit clash took place at the Wembley Stadium in London on Sunday??.

After a nail-biting contest that went to the penalty shootouts, England lost the match 2-3 as the English trio of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Buyako Saka missed their strikes.

After the game, both Styris and Neesham shared their views on social media and recalled England’s cricket team’s win at the 2019 Cricket World Cup against Black Caps.

Notably, ??the final between England and New Zealand involved a few controversies, with the biggest being how the winner was decided. First, the match ended in a tie, and then the Super-Over also ended in a draw.

However, England were still declared the champions as at that time according to ICC rule “if a Super Over ends in a tie, the team with more boundaries count will be declared the winner”. Though right after the World Cup final, the boundary count rule was scraped, and now a Super Over is followed by a 2nd Super Over in case the first one ends in a tie.

Styris took a dig at the boundary count rule, pointing out that England had more corners in the game (5) than Italy (3). Hence the Harry Kane-led side should have been crowned champions.

“I don’t understand… England had more corners …. they are the champions! #Stillsalty,” tweeted Styris.

Neesham also came up with a hilarious take on the whole event. He asked if the Euro 2020 final could be decided by c??ounting the passes made by each team.

“Why is it a penalty shootout and not just whoever made the most passes wins?” Neesham wrote on the micro-blogging website.

The cricket fans are eagerly waiting for the commencement of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021, which is scheduled to begin on April 9. Ahead of the fourteenth season of the cash-rich league, severa??l experts of the game have started sharing their predictions regarding the performance of all eight participating teams.

Following the process, former New Zealand cricketer Scott Styris has also laid?? out his ??prediction for the upcoming season. The cricketer-turned-commentator reckoned that Mumbai Indians (MI) would claim the coveted trophy once again.

Apart from MI, he picked Delhi Capitals (DC), Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to qualify for the playoffs. Interestingly, Styris has placed the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the bottom of the points table.

CSK had a terrible outin??g in the previous season of the lucrative league, where they finished at the seventh position, failing to make it to the playoffs for the first time in their IPL history.

However, after Styris’ prediction, the official Twitter handle of Super Kings responded by sharing a picture of him wearing the CSK jersey. Notably, Styris had played for the ‘Yellow Army’ in the inaugural season of IPL.

CSK asked why Styris feel the Super Kings won’t go long in the upcoming season in the tweet, which said: “Ex Machi. Why Machi? #Yellove Machi.”

After this, the former Kiwi all-rounder posted a GIF and joked that CSK head coach Stephen Fleming has already told him off.

“I consider myself reprimanded. Super coach @SPFleming7 has already told me off,” wrote Styris on Twitter.

Speaking about the three-time champions, they will start their IPL 2021 journey on April 10 against Delhi Capitals (DC).

CSK will be eyeing a good run in the forthcoming season as their star player Suresh Raina has joined the squad. Raina had opted himself out from IPL 2020, citing personal reasons. Apart from ‘Chinna Thala’, the Yellow Army has also roped in the likes of Moeen Ali and Krisnhnappa Gowtham along with Robin Uthappa (through trade window) for the upcoming season.

The 14th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to begin with the defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) taking on Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the tournament opener at the MA Chidambaram Stadium? in C??hennai on April 09.

The world’s biggest franchise league has returned to India after a gap of two years, with the last edition taking place in UAE due to COVID-19 issues.

Once again, all the matches will be played behind closed doors at six different venues – Ahmedabad, Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata and Mumbai.

Ahead of the upcoming IPL season, cricket experts have started making predictions about the s?trengths and weaknesses of al??l eight teams that will compete for the coveted trophy.

Recently, the former New Zeal??and cricketer also took to Twitter to predict the rankings of all teams.

Styris, who is likely to be a part of Star Sports’ Select Dug-Out during the IPL, has predicted 8th position for MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings (CSK). According to him, MI would finish at the top once again while Delhi Capitals (DC), Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) will book a place in the playoffs.

Styris further opined that the fifth spot would be occupied by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) followed by Rajasthan Royals (RR) at No. 6. Meanwhile, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will finish at the seventh position ??because of inconsistency in their batting order.
