The 16th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is currently underway and has reached the halfway stage of the league games. The IPL attracts numerous top-notch players who deliver enthralling performances, keeping their fans on the edge of their seats. Even in the past, the cash-rich league has seen some global cricket icons such as Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis, Brett Lee and Rahul Dravid give a dose of entertainment to their fans.

Often this discussion goes around among the cricket fraternity about how the IPL would have impacted the performance of yesteryear stars and players from the past era, such as those from the 70s and 80s. Speaking about the same, Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar recently sha?red his opinion on three cricketers from his era who he thinks would have thrived ??in the IPL.

When asked to pick players from his time, Gavaskar went with Kapil Dev, the captain who won the World Cup, as the all-rounder, Sandeep Patil as the batter and BS Chandrashekhar as the bowler.

Gavaskar reckoned Chandrashekhar’s bowling action was more suitable for white-ball cricket, and Patil’s aggressive batting style would have made him an extremely valuable asset in the IPL.

“Look, a batsman I would like to see would be Sandeep Patil, there is only one all-rounder who I would choose â€?Kapil Dev, for the bowler, I would like to see BS Chandrashekhar play in the T20 format because his bowling action was not suited only for test cricket, but one day cricket and T20 cricket would also be easy for him,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

Kapil played 225 One Day Internationals (ODIs), in? which he scored 3783 runs and took 253 wickets. Similarly, Patil appeared in 45 ODIs for India, scoring 1024 runs with an average of 29.24. Chandrashekhar, on the other hand, pl?ayed 13 ODIs and bagged 16 wickets.

Former India cricketer Sandeep Patil has questioned the Indian selectors for including all-rounder Hardik Pandya in the 15-member squad for the ongoing T20 World Cup 2021 despite fitness concerns.

Notably, Pandya, who featured in India’s opening game against Pakistan, left the field midway for scans after injuring his shoulders while batting. In fact, his con??tribution with the ball has become very rare since his return to the side.

Not to mention, during the second-leg of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the 28-year-old did not bowl at all and looked completely out of touch with the willow. Patil said if Pandya didn’t bowl in the IPL, the call on him should’ve been taken by selectors, and a fitness test should have been done before picking him up for the multi-team tournament.

“His (Pandya) selection in the XI is up to the captain and the coach, and only the BCCI will know about it. But basically, if a player is not fit, then it comes to the selectors. If he didn’t bowl in the entire IPL, the selectors should have taken a call. They should have asked for a fitness test before including him in the team for the World Cup,” Patil told Times of India.

Patil further asked for someone to be held accountable, especially in the absence of any statement from India coach Ravi Shastri on Pandya’s selection. The 63-year-old reckoned the ongoing T20 World Cup is a major event not a bilateral series that any player can get selected despite not fit enough.

“Someone has to be accountable. There’s no comment from (India coach) Ravi Shastri. Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane said that he’s fit. How can you say he’s fit if he became unfit during the match? I mean, this is the World Cup, not just any series or match,” Patil added.

India will now play against New Zealand in their second fixture at Dubai Internati?onal Cricket Stadium on Sunday, October 31.

Former Indian cricketer and selector, Sandeep Patil, made scathing remarks on Test specialist Ajinkya Rahane, regarding his b?atti??ng approach in the recently concluded series against New Zealand, on Wednesday.

Rahane and Co.? copped a fair bit of criticism for their cautious approach adopted on the green surfaces offe?red at Basin Reserve and Hagley Oval.

Even Indian skipper, Virat Kohli, condemned the ‘cautious’ approach of Cheteshwar Pujara and Hanuma Vihari, mid-way into the 2-match Test series.

The Indian batting unit failed collectively in all four outings in New Zealand, as they managed just ??a ??single score of above 200.

As a result, India, after being handed a 3-0 whitewash in the ODI series, ended up losing the Test series by 2-nil.
Patil traced Rahane’s slow batting approach to his stint with Mumbai this season. The former selector of the BCCI cited out ‘fear of failure’ as the main issue troubling the Mumbai stalwart.

“I heard about this (batting slowly) when he was playing for Mumbai this season. This happens due to the fear of failure. He has led India, he’s got a tremendous overseas record, but all that’s history. Now that he’s been labeled only as a Test player, been out of India’s limited-overs team, human nature is such that one wants to establish himself as a Test specialist. He’s trying to prove a point.” Patil explained.

In the recent series against New Zealand, Rahane averaged just 21.50, collecting only 91 runs in the four innings. Rahane’s watchful knock of 46 came off 138 deliveries at Wellington.

Subsequently, India’s number five in Tests scored a 75-ball 29, 27-ball 7 and 43-ball 9 in the remainder of the series as opposed to his counter-attacking batting model. Patil called out Rahane’s defensive batting method and compared him to a security guard.

“By doing that, you try to show that I’ll be technically correct. I’ll try to occupy the crease. If you want to just occupy,’ you can call a security guard! Who’ll score the runs?,” questioned Patil, while talking to TOI.

Later, Patil blamed coach Ravi Shastri and batting coach Vikram Rathor for the capitulation of Indian batting in New Zealand.
“If Rahane isn’t understanding this, what is Shastri, and the batting coach doing? If one batsman goes into a shell, the others follow, and the team suffers. Those who bats after such batsmen feel that the bowling is too good,” the 63-year-old concluded.
