Following Rohit Sharma‘s retirement from the T20Is after the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, speculation is rife about who will succeed him as t??he captain of Team In??dia.

The question of leadership ha??s become a hot topic among fans and experts alike. As the Indian cricket fraternity awaits the official announcement, the debate continues on who will take the mantle and lead India into a new era in T20Is.

Saba Karim picks two potential candidates

In an interview with Sony Sports, former Indian cricketer and selector Saba Karim shared his insights on the possible candidates for the captaincy. “The first thing that needs to be decided is who will be the captain in T20I. Rohit Sharma has retired, so we will have a new captain. I feel there are two contenders,” Karim stated.

He elaborated on his choices, highlighting the logical selection of Hardik Pandya. “Logically, Hardik Pandya should be the captain; he was the vice-captain in the winning World Cup campaign. He has also captained India in the past,” Karim said.

However, the veteran wicketkeeper also put forward another strong contender, Suryakumar Yadav. “I feel there will also be discussions about Surya Kumar Yadav as the new captain of the T20I. He captained the team against Australia in the home series in November 2023 when Hardik Pandya was injured and performed admirably, making him a viable option,” Karim added.

Proven leaders of Team India

Both Pandya and Suryakumar played pivotal roles in India’s triumph at the 2024 T20 World Cup under Rohit’s captaincy. Their performances have solidified their positions as key players in the team.

Pandya’s captaincy credentials are well-established. He led Gujarat Titans (GT) to their maiden IPL victory in 2022 and took them to the finals in 2023. In the most recent edition of the IPL, Pandya returned to Mumbai Indians (MI), where he was named the new captain, demonstrating his leadership capabilities onc??e again.

Former India cricketer Saba Karim has recently identified the best all-rounder for India’s T20I series against Zimbabwe. A young Indian team, led by Shubman Gill, has arrived in Zimbabwe for the T20I series starting on July 6 in Harare. With many senior players, who played crucial roles in India’s T20 World Cup win, being rested for this tour, a squad of emerging superstars has been selected for the series.

Young stars set to shine

Ahead of the series, Saba has backed a young star as the best all-rounder in the current Indian side against Zimbabwe. Among the players earning their maiden call-ups is Abhishek Sharma, who has been picked by Saba as a key player. Saba believes that Abhishek’s prowess with the bat and his ability to bowl left-arm ?spin make him a valuable asset to the team.

Saba Karim reveals his pick

Saba emphasized Abhishek’s versatility and potential impact in the series and termed he youngster as an ideal all-rounder who brings dual skills to the table as a prolific batter and a handy left-arm spin bowler. Saba sees Abhishek’s ability to open the innings and bowl a couple of crucial overs as a significant advantage, enhancing his value to the team

“I think he’s not only prolific with the bat, but he’s also a handy left-arm spin bowler. He brings that all-rounder slot to the table, which is so good for him. If he gets an opportunity, his ideal position is to open the innings and then bowl one or two crucial overs for India,” Saba said d??uring a press interaction for Sony Spor?ts.

Impressive IPL performance

With an average of 32.26, the left-handed batter amassed 484 runs in 16 innings, boasting a strike rate of over 200. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) dropped a bombshell on Wednesday when they named Rohit Sharma as ??the?? full-time captain of the One-Day Internationals (ODIs), replacing Virat Kohli.

The turn of events occurred when the apex Indi??an board announced the Test squad for the upcoming India tour of Sout??h Africa. Although, BCCI did not specify whether Kohli stepped down or was asked to vacate the captaincy for Rohit. Notably, the Delhi-born superstar had decided to resign as the skipper of the shortest format after the end of India’s T20 World Cup campaign in November.

Meanwhile, former India selector Saba Karim shared his thoughts on the red-hot topic. He reckoned that Kohli was sacked as the ODI captain due to his inability to win an ICC trophy during his four-year?? st?int as the leader of Team India.

“It is right to say that Kohli has been sacked. He made the announcement while leaving the T20I captaincy and could have confirmed that he does not want to continue as ODI captain as well. This meant he wanted to remain ODI captain. Not being able to win an ICC trophy could have cost Virat Kohli the ODI captaincy,” said Karim on the YouTube show Khelneeti.

Kohli, who took over as India’s limited-overs captain from MS Dhoni in 2017, led the side in 95 ODIs, winning 65 of them with a brilliant win percentage of 68. Under him, India played the Champions Trophy final in 2017, where they lost to arch-rivals Pakistan. Similarly, the 32-year-old captained India in the 2019 ODI World Cup, where New Zealand eliminated the ‘Men in Blue’ in the semi-final.

Karim also observed that current head coach Rahul Dravid or someone from the board would have commu?nicated with him regarding the sudde??n decision.

“I am confident that Rahul Dravid or someone from the BCCI would have had a word with Virat Kohli regarding their plans of introducing split captaincy. Dravid has often put emphasis on having clear communication with players. So, when it comes to taking such a big decision, I believe someone would have surely talked to Kohli,” added Karim.

Team India recently finished their white-ball tour of Sri Lanka. Like every other team, they are also focusing hard on the upcoming T20 World Cup, scheduled to take place at Oman and United Arab Emirates (UAE) in October-November lat??er this year.

As the mega event is coming near, experts of the captivating game have started revealing their picks from different teams. Following the bandwagon, former India cricketer Saba Karim has named his India squad for the marquee event.

Starting with the top-order, Karim went with Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli. While Rohit and Kohli are already huge name??s in the fascinating game, Rahul would look at the global tournament as a platform to roll back into form after being ??inactive from competitive cricket in the recent past.

Karim picked Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav for the middle-order while Rishabh Pant and Ishan Kishan as wicketkeepers. Karim said that he selected Iyer because he played the T20I series against England earlier this year. The cricketer-turned-commentator reckoned that though Iyer did not play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 due to injury, his previous season went really we?ll.

“I have kept Shreyas Iyer because he was also in the team which had played against England, and his performance was quite good there. He couldn’t play the IPL this year, but his performance in the IPL was quite good last year. So, there has to be a basis to keep him out of the team,” Karim told India News.

Karim went with Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja as all-rounders, whereas he picked Washington Sundar and Rahul Chahar for the spinners role. Interestingly, Karim didn’t go with Yuzvendra Chahal, who is currently the highest wicket-taker for India in the shortest format. Chahal has so far taken 63 wickets in 49 g?ames.

“I have kept Washington Sundar in my team. I feel that with the matches happening in the UAE, you will need an off-spinner there, and he is kind of an all-rounder. Along with him, I have kept Rahul Chahar because I feel he is an attacking bowler, a wicket-taking bowler, a match-winner,” added the 53-year-old.

The Patna-born mentioned that he is keeping Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the team because the right-armer is extrem??ely crucial ??for Team India.

“I am still keeping Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the team because I feel his form is coming back, and he will be very essential for the Indian team,” Karim added further.

Saba Karim’s India squad for T20 World Cup:

Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan K??ishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Washington Sundar, T Natarajan, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, Rahul Chahar, Deepak Chahar, Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Ever since Team India faced the heartbreaking loss in the World Test Championship (??WTC) final against New Zealand, many experts of the game have been sharing their analysis on the Indian team’s combination, players’ performances and Virat Kohli’s captaincy.

The latest to follow the bandwagon is a former wicketkeeper and national selector Saba Karim. The veteran has dropped his views on Jasprit Bumrah’s presence in India’s playing XI of WTC final. Saba reckoned that Bumr?ah was only picked because of his reputation rather than his current form. Notably, the right-arm pacer went wicketless in both the innings against Black Caps in the conditions favourable to bowlers.

Saba was of the opinion that Bumrah did not play any red-ball fixture since he got injured in Australia. The ?53-year-old asserted the Ahmedabad-born speedster was out of form as well as the required practice.

“I feel the selectors did not pay attention to the current form and went on with reputation to a certain extent. Jasprit Bumrah has not played red-ball cricket since he got injured in Australia,” Saba told India News.

“He has only played white-ball cricket and that too only the T20s. He did not play in the home series against England. I felt he was woefully out of form and along with that out of practice if we talk about red-ball cricket,” the Patna-born added.

Although, Saba was slightly wrong while claiming that Bumrah did not play any Test after the Australia series. The 27-year-old featured in the first Test against England in Chennai and picked up four?? wickets before taking a break for his marriage.

However, Saba mentioned that Bumrah was getting back in his groove in the second innings when he had a catch dropped off his bowling by Cheteshwar Pujara.

“To a certain extent, I felt he was getting back his rhythm in the second innings spell he bowled; he was also unlucky at times. But in the end, he couldn’t catch the length that is required in red-ball cricket, especially in conducive conditions, in the entire Test match. I feel this is a very big area of concern, and it is required to rectify this in the upcoming series,” Saba signed off.
