In an exhilarating start to the third season of Legends League Cricket (LLC), Konark Suryas Odisha (KSO) secured a nail-biting victory over the defending champions, Manipal Tigers (MT). The match, held at the B?arkatullah Kha??n Stadium, showcased a dramatic finish as KSO clinched a two-run win, despite posting a modest total of 104 runs for nine wickets.

Irfan Pathan defends in a nail-biting finish

The match unfolded with KSO, stepping in for Bhilwara Kings this season, holding their composure until the very last ball. Skipper Irfan Pathan, who had previously captained the Kings, took on the responsibility of bowling the final over. Despite a shaky start that included a wide and a six hit by Anureet Singh, Pathan managed to regain control. He conceded only three singles in the next four deliveries and ultimately dismissed Obus Pienaar with a stunning catch by Ambati Rayudu at the midwicket boundary, sealing a?? memorable victory for his team.

Manipal Tigers’ fightback in the match

Credit must be given to the Manipal Tigers for their spirited fightback from a precarious position. After losing their first five batters for just 21 runs, including ducks from openers Robin Uthappa and Solomon Mire, they found themselves in dire straits at 38 for six. However, Australian all-rounder Daniel Christian and South African Pienaar revived their innings with a crucial partnership of 49 runs for the seventh wicket. Christian scored 30 runs while Pienaar contributed 34, bringing hope back to the Tigers’ camp.

Pathan’s all-round heroics for Konark Suryas Odisha

While Pathan’s final over was pivotal, it was Sri Lanka’s Dilshan Munaweera who shone with the ball for KSO, recording impressive figures of 2 wickets for just 11 runs in three overs. Earlier in the innings, Pathan also top-scored for his team with 18 runs off 23 balls. KSO’s innings began positively but faltered mid-way as they struggled to maintain momentum after losing wickets rapidly.

Other struggles and contributions to ponder over

KSO’s innings saw them reach 64 for seven before some late contributions helped them post a total above 100. Naveen Stewart’s quickfire 17 and R Vinay Kumar’s unbeaten 11 were crucial in pushing their score to 104. The team faced pressure from the Tigers’ bowlers but managed to scrape through thanks to a vital partnership between Stewart and New Zealand legend Ross Taylor.

As the excitement of LLC continues, India Capitals will face Toyam Hyderabad in the second match of the season on Saturday at the same venue. With high stakes and thrilling cricket on displa??y, fans can expect more exhilarating encounters as the tournament progresses. This season promises to deliver more nail-biting finishes and remarkable performances from cricketing legends as they take to the field once again.

Cricket has produced numerous stars over the years, with players becoming household names and transcending the sport itself. Among these, a few have risen to global icon status, not only for their performances on the field but also for their immense influence off it. Sachin Tendulkar, often referred to as the ‘God of Cricket’, revolutionized the game with his extraordinary talent and sportsmanship. Sir Vivian Richards brought a swagger and flair that captivated fans worldwide. Modern stars like MS Dhoni, AB de Villiers, and Steve Smith have continued this legacy, ??enchanting fans with their skills and ??leadership.

Ross Taylor picks his choice

Former New Zealand cricketer Ross Taylor, who has seen many greats during his illustrious career, recently shared his thoughts on who he believes stands out as a global superstar in cricket. During his appearance on a podcast, Taylor singled out Indian cricketer Virat Kohli, comparing his global influence to that of football legends Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

Taylor highlighted Kohli’s enormous social media presence and his impact on global sports culture. Notably, Kohli, who has a staggering 269 million followers on Instagram, is the most-followed Indian ??athlete and cricketer in the world. This places him just behind Ronaldo, with 630 million followers, and Messi, who has 501 million, in the hierarchy of sports personalitie??s on social media.

Taylor emphasized the shift brought about by the rise of social media, noting how athletes have become more accessible to fans and have started to endorse brands more frequently. He remarked on the trust fans place in these athletes, turning them into influential figures beyond their sports. Taylor reflected on how unexpected such developments would have been in 2008, but now, figures like Kohli stand as ??global superstars in the broader world of sports.

“Players are putting outposts endorsing products and things like that. Who would have thought of that in 2008? Someone like Kohli, who is a superstar in the world of cricket, but is also a global superstar in the world of sports. In terms of Instagram and social media, he’s up there with Ronaldo and Messi!” said Taylor on ‘180 Not Out’ podcast.

Social media influence

Taylor discussed the broader implications of social media on public figures, including athletes, movie stars, Bollywood celebrities, and politicians. He acknowledged that while this increased scrutiny might see??m challenging, it ultimately contributes ??to greater accessibility and connection between fans and their idols.

“Yeah, I think you are more accessible, I don’t think sportsmen are just as critiqued. I think movie stars, Bollywood stars, politicians are all under the microscope now because of social media but I don’t think that is a bad thing,” he added.

Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium Pitch Report:

The Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium track tends to be more favourable for batters than bowlers. The ball comes onto the bat smoothly, making it easy to score runs on this pitch. The evident support for batters is reflected in the average first-inning score of 177. Therefore, teams winning the toss should consider batting first, especially given the challenging conditions for batters in the second innings, where spinners dominate and make it difficult to set a good? pace.

As the ICC Men’s Cricket ODI World Cup 2023 enters its decisive phase, the much-anticipated semi-final clash between India and New Zealand on Wednesday (November 15) has captured the cricketing world’s attention. Former New Zealand batter Ross Taylor has shared insights into wh?y he believes New Zealand hold the edge in this crucial encount?er.

Recalling the past showdown

Taylor reminisced about the World Cup semi-final clash between India and New Zealand four years ago in the 2019 CWC, where Blackcaps emerged victorious. Drawing parallels with the current scenario, Taylor highlighted that India have been the in-form side in the on?going World Cup, much like their form in the past.

“Four years ago, India went into the semi-final in Manchester as the form side in the tournament, while we were more focused on ensuring our net run rate would keep Pakistan out of reach for the final spot in the top four,” Taylor was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.

Ross Taylor foresees New Zealand’s edge in semi-finals against India

According to Taylor, the key factor that gives New Zealand an advantage is that they have nothing to lose. He emphasized that this mindset makes the Kiwis a very dangerous opponent and could potentially make India ‘nervous.’ The freedom to play without the burden of high expectations could work in favor of New Zealand.

“This time around, India are even bigger favourites, at home and having played so well during the group stage. But when we have nothing to lose, New Zealand teams can be dangerous. If there is a team that India will be nervous facing, it will be this New Zealand side,” the 39-year-old added.

Setting the tone crucial for Kiwis

Taylor stressed the importance of New Zealand setting the tone early, whether they are batting or bowling first. He observed that India tends to be somewhat overdependent on their top three batters to provide a solid start. The Kiwis, with their strategic approach, have the opportunity to capitalize on any vulnerability in India’s game plan.

“The first 10 overs in both innings are crucial. When India are batting, you want to get them two or three down in the first 10 overs to put them under pressure. They rely heavily on an excellent top three,” the Wellington-born cricketer concluded.

India’s determination to break the jinx

While New Zealand aim to capitalize on their advantageous position, India are determined to break their World Cup knockouts jinx. The In?dian team seeks to overcome past disappointments and give themselves the best chance to secure their first ICC Trophy in over a decade.

India’s flamboyant opener and captain Rohit Sharma is currently in the form of his life and is making sure that the ODI World Cup 2023 will be remembered for his extraordinary achievements. The right-handed batter recently scored a brilliant fifty during the 29th match of the ODI World Cup 2023 and added another feather to his cap by completing 1?8000 runs in international cricket and joining an elite list of cricketers.

Rohit Sharma completes 18,000 international runs with a spectacular fifty against England

Rohit’s spectacular fifty came against England off 66 deliveries at Lucknow’s Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium and was a testament to his sublime form. Although Rohit couldn’t convert his innings to a three-figure score and departed for 87 runs, his innings still had a s?ignificant impact as it pushed him past the incredible milestone of 18,000 international runs.

Rohit joins an elite list of world-class cricketers

The Indian captain reached this illustrious feat in his 477th innings, becoming only the fifth Indian player to achieve this milestone. The other four cricketers who have achieved this remarkable feat before Rohit are the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and Virat Kohli. This accomplishment further solidifies Rohit’s status as one of India’s all-time greats and one of the most prolific run-scorers in international cricket.

Remarkably, among these 20 players, no other country besides India boasts five players who have crossed the 18,000-run milestone, which also highlights India’s dominance in producing world-class batters who have consistently delivered on the international stage.

On that note, here’s a country-wise list of players who have scored more than 18,000 international runs:

The ODI World Cup 2023 has already had fans on the edge of their seats with its thrilling performances and intense matches. As the tournament now reaches its midway point, it’s clear that some teams have shone brighter than others and could be the probable winners. Among all, the two teams that have dominated the first half of the tournament are New Zealand and India.

Both New Zealand and India have maintained an unbeaten record in the ICC even so far, with ?each of them securing four consecutiv?e victories courtesy of brilliant performances across all departments.

A Clash of Titans

Interestingly, these two formidable sides will now be up against each other in a highly anticipated clash at Dharamsala on Sunday, October 22. With both teams unbeaten thus far, one of? them will inevitably experience their first loss in the tournament, and fans are eager to see the electrifying battle unfold.

Ross Taylor’s surprise pick

In the midst of this much-anticipated showdown, New Zealand’s veteran batter Ross Taylor expressed his views on the favourites to win the ODI World Cup 2023. Taylor’s choice came as a surprise to many as he picked India over his home nation as the top contender to lift the championship title. He even went on to assert that the outcome of India’s match against the Blackcaps would not hamper India’s winning chances in any case.

“Getting off to a good start in the competition has been particularly crucial because New Zealand have a tough streak of games coming up, beginning with India on Sunday. India in their home conditions are a different beast, and they have started unsurprisingly strongly ?I see them as favourites to win the competition at this stage, no matter what happens in Dharamshala tomorrow,” Taylor wrote in a column he penned for the ICC.

Taylor reminisces memories of 2019

Taylor also took a moment to reminisce about the last encounter between the two teams during the 2019 World Cup and mentioned a few iconic moments, such as Martin Guptill‘s run-out of MS Dhoni and the game extending over two days due to rain, ultimately culminating in New Zealand’s victory. The 39-year-old concluded with a hope of a similar outcome for Kiwis in Dharamsala as well.

“Four years ago, we played them in the semi-final in Manchester, and it was an iconic occasion. There was the Martin Guptill run out of MS Dhoni, the game going over two days because of the rain and ultimately, New Zealand coming out on top. Hopefully, there will be a similar result tomorrow ?top of the table at the halfway stage would be a great place to be,” reminisced Taylor.

With the ODI World Cup 2023 in India just around the corner, New Zealand have revealed their formidable 15??-member squad for this prestigious event on Monday (September 11)

Notably, Kane Williamson and Tim Southee will be making their fourth appearance in an ODI World Cup, adding their considerable experience to the squad. Additionally, six players are set to make their debut in this marquee tournament: Mark Chapman, Devon Conway, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra and Will Young have all earned their spots in the ODI World Cup squad for the very first time.

Recalling the dramatic 2019 edition in which they narrowly missed the title to England, New Zealand ?aims to kickstart their 2023 campaign with a rematch against the current champions, England. This exciting clash is scheduled for October 5 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahme??dabad.

Nonetheless, this period has witnessed the exclusion of several players who played crucial roles in New Zealand’s 2019 ODI World Cup campaign. Similar to several other cricketing teams, New Zealand have entered a transitional phase characterized by substantial alterations in both their pace bowling arsenal and batting lineup.

Here are the five Blackcaps players who made crucial contributions i??n the 2019 ODI World Cup but won’t be pa??rt of the 2023 ODI World Cup squad:

1. Martin Guptill

Martin Guptill
Martin Guptill (Image Source: Twitter)

Auckland native Martin Guptill has built a reputation for his consistent run-scoring in ODI cricket. His impact on the game has been immense, capable of single-handedly dismantling opponents. Across 27 World Cup games, he amassed nearly 1000 runs, including 2 centuries and 4 half-centuries. One of his most memorable World Cup performances was his stunning 237 ?in the quarter-final of the 2015 World Cup. However, in the 2019 World Cup, where New Zealand?? reached the final, Guptill struggled, scoring just 188 runs in 10 matches with a disappointing average of 17.09.

Guptill’s last appearance in an ODI for the Blackcaps was in September 2022. He was part of the T20 World Cup squad in Australia but didn’t feature in any fixtures, with Finn Allen preferred as the opening batter. Following that, he was omitted from the squad for the series against India. He then released from the central contract. Guptill hasn’t officially retired from international cricket and has expressed his desire to continue playing. Nevertheless, today’s selection by New Zealand suggests that the cricket board is looking to the future, potentially signaling the conclusion of Guptill’s international career.

2. Colin Munro

Colin Munro
Colin Munro (Image Source: Twitter)

Colin Munro, who formed a partnership with Guptill as the opening batter during the 2019 World Cup, was known for his aggressive style of play, particularly in the shortest format of the game. Nevertheless, similar to Guptill, Munro found it challenging to leave a significant mark on the grand stage, mustering just 125 runs across six matches with an average of 25. His performance was so lackluster that he was excluded from the final game against England. Munro’s most recent appearance for the Black Caps dates back to 2020 when they faced India in a T20I game.

3. Henry Nicholls

Henry Nicholls

Henry Nicholls‘ omission from the 2023 ODI squad was one of the most notable exclusions. Currently, he is part of the New Zealand squad that is competing in the four-match ODI series against England and even played in the first fixture. Nonetheless, the return of Kane Williamson to the squad and the preference for Mark Chapman played a significant role in Nicholls’ exclusion.

Furthermore, Nicholls’ recent form in the 50-over format hasn’t been impressive, with just one score of more than 50 in his last 13 appearances. During the last World Cup in England, he managed to score only 91 runs in four games, including one half-century, which notably came in the crucial final game against England. Although, despite his efforts, the Blackcaps couldn’t secure victory in that fixture.

4. Ross Taylor

Ross Taylor

Ross Taylor is undoubtedly one of the most celebrated and accomplished cricketers in the history of international cricket, and he is a source of immense pride for New Zealand. He was renowned for his impeccable technique and the ability to adapt his game to various situations.?? Taylor possesses the versatility to play a wide range of shots, making him a valuable asset to his team.

In the 2019 World Cup, Taylor showcased his exceptional cricketing skills by amassing 350 runs in 10 matches at an impressive average of over 38. He played pivotal innings throughout the tournament, with one of the standout moments being his match-winning 74 in the semi-final. Despite his team’s loss in the final, Taylor concluded his illustrious international career on a high note by playing a defining innings of 47 not out against India. This crucial contribution played a significant role in New Zealand clinching the championship title in the inaugural edition of the World Test Championship (WTC) in 2021.

5. Colin de Grandhomme

Colin de Grandhomme
Colin de Grandhomme (Image Source: Twitter)

Colin de Grandhomme played a pivotal role for his side as an exceptional all-rounder during the 2019 World Cup. Over the course of 10 games, he contributed significantly by scoring 190 runs at a strike rate exceeding 100. Additionally, he showcased his prowess with the ball, claiming six crucial wickets with an impressive economy rate of 4.15. His all-round performances were instrumental in New Zealand’s campaign in the tournament.

De Grandhomme was also a valuable member of the New Zealand team that emerged victorious in the ICC WTC final against India. However, in 2022, at the age of 36, he made the difficult decision to? retire from international cricket. This move was primarily influenced by persistent injuries and the increasing competition within the team.

Special mention: Tom Blundell

Tom Blundell
Tom Blundell (Image Source: Twitter)

Tom Blundell, despite being a part of the squad, did not get the opportunity to play in the entire CWC 2019. He though served as the 12th man for the New Zealand cricket team during the final against England. In 2021, he faced a setback due to a back injury, which temporarily sidelined him. However, Blundell’s determination and skills allowed him to make a swift return to the team, participating in matches across various formats.

Remarkably, he recently played an ODI match against Bangladesh on September 26, 2023, showcasing his versatility and adaptability. Nevertheless, the selectors may have taken into account the presence of wicketkeeping options such as Tom Latham and Devon Conway, both?? of whom are left-handed batters. This consideration could have worked against Blundell, resulting in his exclusion from the final fifteen players selected for the ICC ODI World Cup 2023.
