India has been a consistent team in Test format. Having played as many as 542 Tests, India has undoubtedly earned a champion team status in the cricketing world. In? the current World Test Championship (WTC), India are at the top with 360 points.

However, to qualify in the Indian Test side is pretty difficult as the competition for national team selection is way too hard here. That’s why some of the top performers in the domestic circuit get ignored at times.

Just like England, the Indian team has players in the past from other countries. Few players born in different countries have been able ??to represent India in red-ball cricket.

Let’s have a look at four Test players who were born outside India:

4.) Lall Singh – Born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Lall Singh

Lall Singh was amongst the list of first players who represented India in Test cricket. He appeared in India’s inaugural Test match against England in 1932 at the Lord’s Cricket Ground. Not only this, but he was also the first Test cricketer of an Asian team who was born in a non-Test playing country. Lall was born in Malaysia’s Kuala Lumpur in December 1909.

Lall played knocks of 15 and 29 runs, respectively; however, it turned out to be his first and last Test.
When it comes to his f?irst-class career, the r??ight-handed batsman has featured in a total of 32 matches in which he accumulated 1123 runs with one hundred and five half-centuries.

3.) Robin Singh – Born in Trinidad

Robin Singh

The genius all-rounder who changed th??e mindset of Indian cricket by producing al??l-round efforts, Robin Singh still remains the most capped player in international cricket for India who was born outside.

Robin was born in the Princes Town, which is a city in Trinidad and Tobago. Many don’t know that he made his professional debut for his home team before moving to India.

In October 19??98, Robin made his Test debut against Zimbabwe, however, just like Lall Singh, Robin also featured in one Test for Team India. He made 27 runs in that game.

Despite his lousy show in red-ball format, Robin had an excellent time in white-ball cricket. He played 136 ODI matches and ??clubbed 2336 runs with one hundred and nine half-centuries. He also bagged 69 wickets in his ODI career with 5/22 being his best.

2.) Ashok Gandotra – Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Ashok Gandotra

Lots of people are not aware of the fact that there has been only one cricketer born in Brazil who has featured in Test cricket. He was left-handed batsman Ashok Gandotra. He was born in November 1948 in Brazil’s famous Rio de Janeiro.

Gandotra made his India debut during the 196?9/70 home season where he featured in two Tests one ag?ainst New Zealand and another against Australia. He scored only 54 runs in those two Tests at an average of 13.5.

1.) Salim Durani – Born in Kabul, Afghanistan

Salim Durani

Afghanistan debuted in Test cricket in 2018, but ?the first-ever Test crick??eter born in this country made his entrance in Test cricket way back in 1960; it was left-handed batsman Salim Durani.

Durani was born in Afghanistan’s Kabul in December 1934. The Arjuna awardee made his Test debut at the start of 1960 against Australia at the Brabourne Stadium.

Incidentally, Durrani’s farewell Test also came at the same venue in 1973 against England. Overall, Durani played 29 Test matches for India, in which he scored 1202 runs with the help of eight 50+ scores including a hundred.
Durani was a spin bowler as well; he bag??ged 75 wickets at an average of 35.42.

The Kapil Dev-led Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) will interview six candidates for Team India’s head coach position at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) headquarters on Friday (August 16).

All the six short-listed candidates – Mike Hesson, Tom Moody, Robin Singh, Lalchand Rajput, Phil Simmons, and Ravi Shastri – have already been informed about the interview date and time.

“The board have finalized a list of six names based on their experience and qualifications for the post. All the six interviews will be held in Mumbai with different time slots for all the six candidates. The interviews will begin in morning and will go on till 5:30 pm in the evening on August 16,” a senior BCCI official was quoted as saying in CricketNext.

“Shastri is the automatic entry into this process like the rest of the support staff. The CAC will probably rank all the candidates so that BCCI can choose the final candidate on the basis of availability and other conditions. The final decision on how many names will finally be offered to BCCI will be decided by the CAC on the day of the interview,” the official added.

Before leaving for the tour of Windies, Indian skipper Virat Kohli strongly backed Shastri to continue as coach, but with Kapil Dev stating that the views of the captain ??will not be considered, a new head coach is likely.

Moody and Hesson are the front-runners for the job, but one cannot count out Simmons, who has played a massive role in the growth of Afghanistan Cricket. He was also the coach of the Windies’ side that won the T20 World Cup in 2016.

Robin Singh was associated with the team when India won ??the inaugural T20 World Cup, while Rajput was the head coa?ch for the same tournament.

Shastri has been with Kohli & Co. for a while now, earlier as the team director and later was appointed the head coach in 2017 – after Anil Kumble’s departure.

Virat Kohli-led Team India was knocked out of the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup in the semi-finals? after losing to the? Black Caps in a rain-affected match.

Though India lost one match in the league stage and finished as the table-toppers, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) still invited the applications for the head coach and other support staff soon after the Wo??rld Cup.

Former Indian all-rounder Robin Singh, who has reportedly applied for the post of head coach, recently took a dig at current coach Ravi Shastri, saying India lost in the ‘semi-finals of two successive ODI World Cups under his coaching’.

“Under the current coach, India has lost in the semi-finals of two successive ODI World Cups, and in the last four stage of the World Twenty20 championship as well. Now is the time to prepare for the 2023 World Cup and a change could be good for the side,” Robin told The Hindu.

Shastri, along with the other support s??taf??f, has been given a 45-day extension following the World Cup in England and Wales.

On July 16, the BCCI invited applic?ations for the post of head coach, batting coach, bowling coach, fielding coach, physiotherapist, strength and conditioning coach and administrative manager.

“The current coaching staff of Team India (Senior Men) will get an automatic entry in the recruitment process,” the BCCI said in a release.

“Pertinent to note, that the decision of the BCCI for the said position, will remain final and binding,” the release, issued by the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA), added further.

The last date of application is? July 3?0, until 5 PM IST.
