Australian superstar Steve Smith served as captain of the now defunct Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) in IPL 2017. At the time, there was much speculation about how he would lead a team that included the highly successful former India skipper MS Dhoni. After a lacklustre start to the season, Dhoni was replaced as captain by Sm??ith, who went on to lead the team to the fi??nal, where they narrowly lost to the Mumbai Indians (MI).

Smith has now returned to the IPL in 2023 as a member of the commentary panel for Star Sports, where he reflected on his experience of captaining RPS and working with Dhoni. He spoke of initially feeling daunted by the prospect of leading a team that included such an accomplished cricketer, but he credited Dhoni with providing him with valuable guidance and support both on and off the field. Smith also noted that he learned a great deal from Dhoni’s calm and composed approach to leadership and has tried to emulate it in his own style.

“So, you know, when I got the call to say that they wanted me to captain, it was a little bit daunting. But that season, MSD was just wonderful. You know, he helped in any way that he could and, he’s a terrific guy. It was a great experience being able to captain him, but also very daunting as well,” Smith was quoted as saying to Star Sports.

??Smith further described his emotions upon being appointed captain of RPS, including his initial shock an??d uncertainty about working with Dhoni.

“I didn’t really know what to expect initially. MS had captained every team he played for, obviously throughout the IPL with Chennai, every season should I say. But when they came and asked me, I was a little bit shocked first, and then I didn’t really know what to say. It was like, have you spoken to MS about this? This is a little bit strange from my side, but after we sorted everything out, MS was just wonderful. And the way he helped me and helped guide that team that year was incredible. And yeah, I couldn’t thank him enough.

“He was someone that I was bouncing ideas off. Being behind the stumps, he’s got a great, great view of the game. He understands the angles really well and obviously playing in India also, you know, it’s his home and he understands those conditions as well as anyone would. So, I would’ve been stupid if I wasn’t trying to get as much knowledge as I could out of him in the middle. And he was very helpful and certainly helped us achieve what we did that year,” added Smith.

However, the Aussie praised Dhoni for his willingness to offer advice and assistance throughout the season, noting that the wicketkeeper-batter’s experience and understanding of the game were invaluable assets to the team. Smith also spoke about the importance of maintaining a calm and level-headed approach to leadership, which he learned from watching Dhoni over the years.

“I think just the calmness that MS shows, we saw it throughout his career, just how calm he was. It didn’t look like he was flustered by any emotions or anything like that. And that’s certainly something that I’ve taken in not just in that season, but just watching him go about his business in the prior years, just how calm and relaxed he was. At times I can get quite agitated and things like that. So, I have to try and keep myself as calm and as sort of level-headed as I can. And yeah, that’s certainly something that I learned off of MS.”

As soon as the Knight Riders shared the post, it garnered huge attraction and was flooded with comments from mostly Dhoni’s fans. Even Chennai Super Kings (CSK) all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja couldn’t stop himself from reacting to the KKR’s post.

Jadeja decided to hit back at KKR by claiming that it wasn’t a masterstroke but just a way of ‘show off’. Jaddu wrote: “It’s not a masterstroke! Just a show off (Rolling on the floor laughing emoji).”

Notably, Dhoni played for RPS when CSK was suspended for two seasons – 2016 and 2017. Dhoni played 30 matches for the Pune franchise, scoring 574 runs at a strike rate of close to 125 with two half-centuries.

The RPS team owners have decided to rename their team’s name and it will now be called Rising Pune Supergiant. The team also renamed their Twitter handle with the new name.

However, the officials of the franchise have refused to comment on this issue, but rumours are suggesting that reason behind it is numerology and a poor run in the last season leads them to do so. “The name change was on the cards after last season’s performance,” a source said.

Also other source from the team added that there is no superstition behind renaming the team. This source was quoted saying as, “Before every season, we have a meeting with the creative team, and there it was decided that it is better to project the whole team rather than focusing on a few players. That is the reason behind changing the name.”

World No.1 bowler in ODI’s and T20I’s, Imran Tahir, has been roped in to replace the injured Mitchell Marsh by the Ri??sing Pune Supergiant (RPS) for the upcoming e?dition of the IPL. Tahir was unsold in the auctions that took place last month.

Marsh had been ruled out of the ongoing Test series between India and Australia owing to a shoulder in??jury, prompting the franchise to bring in the South African leg-spinne?r.

“Imran Tahir who was unsold in the 2017 VIVO IPL Player Auction is from the registered available player pool list (RAPP list). As per the player regulations, RPS is allowed the replacement player from the RAPP list,” stated a BCCI media release on Thursday (March 23).

The 37-year old has taken 54 wickets in 31 T20I’s and was a part of the Delhi Daredevils side until last season. In 2015, Tahir was the highest wicket-taker for Delhi, joint with Nathan Coulter-Nile. He has picked a total of 29 wick?ets in 20 IPL games.

In a big blow to Rising Pune Supergiants, star player Mitchell Marsh has been ruled out of the IPL 2017 ?due to shoulder i?njury.

The Australian bowling all-rounder flew back home after the second Test match played between India and Australia in Bengaluru. He may furt?her require around nine mo??nths to gain complete fitness after the reconstructive shoulder surgery.

According to media reports, Australia’s physiotherapist David Beakley said, “Mitchell has been playing with a shoulder injury for most of the summer,”. “We have been managing (it) up until now but unfortunately it has progressively deteriorated to a point where he is unable to function at the level required.”
