In the opening T20 International of the India Women tour of Bangladesh 2024, the Women in Blue registered a convincing 44-run win against the home team at the Sy??lhet International Cricket Stadium. Opting to bat first after winning the toss, India set a challenging total, with Bangladesh falling ?short in their chase.

India Women’s Innings Overview

India posted a solid total of 145/7 in their allotted 20 overs. The innings was buoyed by contributions from several key players. Shafali Verma sparked the innings with a brisk 31 off 22 balls, including three fours and a six, setting a positive tone for the batting side. Yastika Bhatia was the top scorer with a well-composed 36 from 29 deliveries, hitting six boundaries in her innings. India’s bowlers executed their plans to perfection. Renuka Singh Thakur led the attack beautifully, picking up 3 wickets for 18 runs in her four overs. She was well-supported by Pooja Vastrakar, who took 2 wickets. The rest of the bowling lineup kept the pressure on, with Deepti Sharma, Shreyanka Patil and Radha Yadav bowling economically and picking up crucial wic??kets.

The squad of the Indian women’s cricket team for the upcoming limited-overs tour of Bangladesh has been officially announced. Harmanpreet Kaur will continue to lead the Women in Blue, while Smriti Mandhana has been assigned the post of Harmanpreet’s deputy for the series. However, certain big names didn’t find a place in the team and have been left out of the squad.

The Indian side will play three T20Is and as many ODIs against Bangladesh on the tour, and the series will commence from July 9 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur. Bangladesh had already announced their team for the home seri?es against India. It is also worth mentioning that this will be India’s first international assignment since the T20 World Cup 2023.

Renuka Singh was the pick of the bowler for India, bagging a brilliant three-wicket haul while giving away just 5 runs from three overs, including a maiden. Renuka was well supported by Rajeshwari Gayakwad (2/16) and Sneh Rana (2/13), both of whom took two scalps each. Tailender Inoka Ranaweera scored the maximum unbeate??n 18 to help her side cross the 60-run benchmark.

Chasing the paltry target, India lost Shafali Verma (5) and Jemimah Rodrigues (2) early, but Smriti Mandhana blazed her way to a remarkable half-century, helping her side win the Women’s Asia Cup 2022. Mandhana smashed an unbeaten 51 from just 25 deliveries, with the help of 6 fours and three sixes.

“We should give credit to the bowlers, and the fielding unit was very good today from ball one. We didn’t want to give them easy runs as every ball is important, proud of the way we performed today. You gotta read the wicket and place the field accordingly. We did that very well and placed the fielders accordingly, and that really helped us. We were not looking at the scoreboard, and we were just looking at the short targets we had for ourselves, and it all worked out well,” said India captain Harmanpreet Kaur in the post-match presentation.

The International Cricket Council (ICC), on Monday, announced the winners of the ‘Players of the Month Awards’ for July 2022. Notably, these awards recognize best performances from both male and female cricketers across all forms of international cricket.

Earlier this month, ICC had shared the list of nominees. In the male category, the race was between England’s explosive batter Jonny Bairstow, Sri Lanka’s spin sensation Prabath Jayasuriya and France’s young star Gustav McKeon.

Similarly, in the female category, the nominees were England’s new opening batter Emma Lamb, her teammate and captain Nat Sciver, and India’s pace sensation Renuka Singh.

Amongst men, Jayasuriya has won the prestigious awa?rd following his jaw-dropping start to intern?ational cricket. He emerged as the latest spin hero for the Islanders and had one of the most memorable debuts in the longest format.

The spinner registered figures of 6/118 and 6/59 to help Sri Lanka level the two-match Test series against Australia in Galle. Jayasuriya’s sensational bowling propelled the hosts to beat the tourists by an innings and 39 runs.

“I am delighted with this announcement and wish to thank the fans for voting me as the ICC Men’s Player of the Month. Certainly, it has been an incredible month for me, as I made the Test debut, and also got the opportunity to contribute for my team to level the Test series played against Australia and Pakistan,” said Jayasuriya as quoted by ICC.

“I take this opportunity to thank my fans, teammates, coaches, family and friends for helping my journey, and thrilled with what I am experiencing at this moment in my life,” he added.

When it comes to Women’s cricket, the Player of the Month award was bagged by England all-rounder Lamb. She dominated England’s three-game ODI series against South Africa.

Lamb smashed he??r maiden ODI century in the opening match and followed it with scores of 67 and 65 as the hosts registered a clean sweep over Prote??as Women.

“It’s very exciting to have been awarded the ICC Women’s Player of the Month award for July. I’m very happy to have earned my spot at the top of the order in the Test and ODI team, and it’s been brilliant to be able to score some runs and help the team win,” said Lamb.

“Everyone in the squad contributed to our multi-format series win against South Africa, so I just want to keep scoring runs for the team – I feel very lucky that my performances across the last month have been rewarded, and I hope to carry on my good form,” she added.
