Aside from Jennings, Ravi Bopara was the only other notable contributo??r, scoring 31 runs from 29 balls with 3 boundaries. The rest of the batting lineup faltered under pressure.

In contrast, Adil Rashid was the standout performer for the Northern Superchargers. In a match that was gradually turning into a low-scoring affair, The Men’s Hundred 2024 witnessed a moment of pure magic that will be etched in the memory of cricket fans for years to come. Mitchell Santner, the New Zealand all-rounder, produced a catch that defied gravity, sending ripples of astonishment throu??gh the ground.

Mitchell Santner’s special for the ages

London Spirit, batting first, found the going tough against a disciplined Northern Superchargers attack. The pressure was mounting on opener Michael Pepper, who, desperate to break the shackles, attempted to clear the infield off the bowling of Reece Topley. However, mistiming his shot, Pepper sent the ball high in the air, o?ffering a glimmer of hope to the fielders.

It was then that Santner, stationed at mid-on, showcased his athleticism and instincts. With the ball soaring towards the long-on boundary, the Kiwi all-rounder sprinted towards the fence at full tilt. Just as it seemed the ball was destined to clear the ropes, Santner leaped into the air, his outstretched hands making contact with the ball at its highest point. The crowd erupted in disbelief as the ball nestled safely in Santner’s grasp, and his teammates rushed in to congratulate their teammate on a breathtaking catch.

Northern Superchargers triumph over London Spirit

The dismissal of Pepper proved to be a turning point in the match. Superchargers, buoyed by Santner’s heroics, tightened the noose around the Spirit batting lineup. Adil Rashid was particularly impressive, picking up three wickets to restrict Spi??rit to a below-par total of 111-8 in their allotted 100 balls.

In reply, Northern Superchargers were off to a steady start, but rain interrupted their chase. With the DLS method coming into play, the revised target was set at 64 runs in 44 balls. Matthew Short and Graham Clark provided a solid foundation, and despite losing Clark, Short remained unbeaten to guide his team to a?? 21-run victory.

Santner’s catch undoubtedly stole the show, but the win also highlighted the overall strength of the Northern Superchargers squad. Their bowlers were disciplined, and their batters showed composure under pressure. London Spirit will rue the missed opportunities and will need to regroup quickly for their next match.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has launched a scathing attack on the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and its players for their early departure from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Gavaskar has urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to t?ake action against the players and the?? board as well.

England players head home

Several England players, including Liam Livingstone (Punjab Kings), Jos Buttler (Rajasthan Royals), Will Jacks, and Reece Topley (Royal Challengers Bangalore), have left the IPL to either rest or join England’s squad for the upcoming T20I series against Pakistan, which begins on May 22.

Livingstone, in particular, returned to England to rest his knee ahead of the T20 World Cup next month. PBKS, where Livingstone plays, have already been eliminated from the IPL, with only four wins in 12 matches and sitting at the bottom of the standings with eight points. While RR and RCB are still in the r??ace of making it into the playoffs.

Sunil Gavaskar calls for financial penalties

In his column for Mid Day, Gavaskar suggested that IPL franchises should withhold a significant portion of the players’ pay if they leave early. He emphasized the financial implications of their premature exit and argued that it undermines the commitments made to the franchises.

“I am all for players choosing country before anything else, but having assured various franchises about their availability for the full season, if they pull out now, it will be letting down the franchises. The franchises should not only be allowed to deduct a substantial amount from the fee that the player was bought for, but also not give the Board, to which the player belongs, the stated 10 per cent commission of the fee that each player gets,” Gavaskar wrote.

Accountability for cricket boards

Gavaskar also called for cricket boards to be held accountable for breaking their assurances. He pointed out that the 10% commission paid to cricket boards for players’ participation in the IPL is a practice unique to the tournament and not seen in other T20 leagues worldwide.

“If the Board has gone back on its assurance, they need to be penalised too. This 10 per cent commission to the Boards happens only in the IPL and nowhere else. Does the BCCI get any thanks for its generosity? No way,” added Gavaskar.
