The Mumbai cricket team, under the captaincy of Ajinkya Rahane, scripted history on Thursday, securing their 42nd Ranji Trophy title with a resounding victory over Vidarbha by 169 runs at the iconic Wankhede Stadium.

Rollercoaster final: Mumbai’s dominance in decisive moments

In a high-stakes final, Vidarbha faced a daunting target of 538 runs for victory. Initially, it appeared that Mumbai had the upper hand as they reduced Vidarbha to 133 /4. However, a spirited fightback led by Karun Nair and captain Akshay Wadkar kept Vidarbha’s hopes alive on Day 4 and into the first session of Day 5. Nevertheless, despite their efforts, the tide turned swiftly in the post-lunch session, with Tanush Kotian and Tushar Deshpande wreaking havoc as Vidarbha collapsed, losing their last five wickets for a mere 15 runs. Ultimately, they were bundled out for 368 runs in the final in??nings.

Entering the final day, Vidarbha still required 298 runs with five wickets in hand. After the fall of Karun, Wadkar and Harsh Dubey showed resilience in the morning session, frustrating the Mumbai bowlers while adding crucial runs to the scoreboard. Nonetheless, Kotian’s breakthrough wicket of Wadkar sparked a collapse, leading to Vidarbha’s downfall. Mumbai emerged victorious by 169 runs, with Dhawal Kulkarni, in his final game, sealing the win by dismissing Umesh Yadav.

In a remarkable cricketing feat, 19-year-old Musheer Khan overjoyed the audience in the Wankhede Stadium by scoring a centuryย  for Mumbai on Day 3 during the Ranji Trophy 2024 final against Vidarbha on Tuesday (March 12). This young sensation had recently made a mark in the ICC U19 World Cup and continued to display extraordinary talent.

Musheer Khan special ton for Mumbai

Despite a lackluster first innings where Mumbai bundled out for 224 only, Mumbai’s batters, led by Ajinkya Rahane‘s resilient 78-run knock staged a comeback in the second innings. Musheer, along with Rahane and Shreyas Iyer, punished Vidarbha’s bowlers, propelling Mumbai to a commanding position.

His century, completed in 255 balls, demonstrated maturity beyond his years, elevating Mumbai to a formidable lead over 450 runs. Eventually he got out after scoring 136. Apart from Musheer, Iyer also contributed by scoring 95 runs and provided a glimpses of being in great touch after recently losing the BCCI’s central contract.

Record-breaking moment: Surpasses Sachin Tendulkar

Notably, Musheer, at 19 years and 14 days, surpassed the legendary Sachin Tendulkar‘s record, becoming the youngest Mumbai batter to hit a century in a Ranji Trophy final – a feat previously accomplished by Tendulkar at the age of 21 in 1994-95, where he scored two centuries (140 and 139) leading Mumbai to triumph against Punjab.

Mumbai in the driverโ€™s seat

The ongoing Ranji Trophy finals between Saurashtra and Bengal at the SCA Stadium in Rajkot already had its fair share of controversy with a life-less pitch on offer.

Moreover, another instanc??e from the finals raised quite a few eyebrows as only a single umpire is off??iciating from both ends.

During play on Day 1, umpire Chettithody Shamsuddin was hit on the lower abdomen area, after one of the fielders passed the ball post dismissal of the batsman. The injury to the umpire forced him to remain out of action in the first session of ?Day 2?.

It meant that KN Ananthapad??man??abhan had to officiate from both ends in the match, while Piyush Kakkar stood at square leg throughout the entirety.

Due to the various responsibilit?ies of the third umpire, Sundaram Ravi was not able to deploy himself on the ground.

According to the laws of domestic cricket in India, only two umpires are deployed for of??ficiating the match. The third umpire plays the dual role of match referee as well as the controllers of six cameras overlooking the game for DRS appeals.

As opposed to the role of the fourth ump?ire in the international game, when an umpire is injured or feels unhealthy, the liaison officer for umpires and match referee replaces them. These are usually local umpires on the ground deployed by State Association.

Coach of Bengal, Arun Lal, criticised the standard of surface offered in the finals of the Ranji Trophy for the 2019-20 season, on Monday. Lal used terms such as ‘very poor’ and ‘not good for cricket’ to describe the nature of the track at SCA Stadium in Rajkot.

After crawling through a score ??of 206 for the loss of five wickets on Day 1, Saurashtra resumed their laborious attempt to post a challenging total in front of Bengal with a block-fest on Day 2.

Resolute attempt to? negotiate the low rising ball??, even after pitching the short areas, has made it difficult for bowlers and fielders to dislodge batsmen due to not enough carry.

On the other hand, ?the batsmen are finding it difficult to ?cope with the low bounce for stroke-making.

“Very poor wicket. The board has to look into things like this. The ball is not coming up, it is not getting off properly. It is dusting on the first day. This is very poor,” Arun Lal was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

The success mantra for the Bengal bowlers has usually been on the green decks offered at Eden Gardens – helpful for seam bowlers.

However, after being wicketless in the first session, the Bengal bowlers adjusted their lengths enough to?? make a comeback? later in the day. The Bengal coach seemed jubilant of the approach shown by the bowlers.

“Yes, I am (satisfied). This is a long game. 15 sessions have to be played, we have played three. We will fight till the end whatever the result. We don’t focus on the result. We focus on what we do best. If we keep them to under 300 in the first innings, I will be happy,โ€?continued Lal.

Lal also stressed on the bounce and carry offered in the wicket, which might suit the hosts’ style of batting.

“We had to attack the batsman (in the third session). You have to contain runs, like I said it is a poor wicket. Medium-pacer is bowling with one slip and there is no chance of ball carrying it to slips. It would be a disgrace if the ball starts rolling through on day three,” reckoned the former Indian cricketer.

Further, Lal pleaded that the board must look into the matter but did not ‘necessarily’ believe that the pitch was made to favour Saurashtra in the finals.

“No, not necessarily (on neutral venue). You have got neutral curators. The board should look into it. Send your curator 15 days before the game. Even the curator has not done a good job,” concluded Lal.
