Barbados Royals secure victory via DLS method

Despite the amusing fielding mishap, Barbados Royals went on to win the match by 10 runs via the DLS method. Antigua and Barbuda Falcons posted 176/5, with Justin Greaves scoring 61 and Billings adding 56. Cornwall’s scintillating century ranks as the joint third-fastest in tournament history, trailing only behind Andre Russell’s 40 and 44-ball centuries. However, Cornwall had to retire hurt in the very next over after reaching his century, receiving assistance from the physio in the 16th over. In preparation for the upcoming red-ball series against India, West Indies have unveiled their 13-man squad for the first Test match, starting July 12. The squad includes two uncapped players, Kirk McKenzie and Alick Athanaze, who have earned t?heir maiden call-ups to the national team.

Additionally, West Indies have welcomed back all-rounder Rahkeem Cornwall and left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican. Cornwall last played a ??Test match in November 2021 against Sri Lanka in Galle, while Warrican missed the South Africa tour in February. Their return will add valuable experience and depth to the squad.

“We were very impressed with the approach to batsmanship of McKenzie and Athanaze on the recent ‘A’ Team tour of Bangladesh,” WI lead selector Desmond Haynes said in his official statement. “These are two young players who got good scores and played with great maturity, and we believe they deserve an opportunity.”

However, left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie was not available for selection. The specific reasons for his unavailability were not disclosed ??by the team management.

“We are without Motie, who is doing his rehabilitation, and this has created an opportunity for Warrican and Cornwall in the spin bowling department. They have both played at Test match level before and are capable of doing the job,” Haynes added.

He also revealed that young talents Jayden Seales and Kyle Mayers were n?ot yet deemed ready for their return to Test cricket. While both players h??ave shown promise in recent matches, the selectors have opted for a more cautious approach in their development.

The West Indies squad will depart for Dominica on Sunday (July 9) after completing their pre-series camp at Coolidge Cricket Ground in Antigua. The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) has reached its business end. On Thursday (September 10), the CPL 2020 final will be played between St Lucia Zouks (SLZ) and Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) at the Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba.

Zouks registered the seventh-largest victory in terms of balls remaining in T20s

Roston Chase (2/15), Zahir (2/12), Scott Kuggeleijn (2/12) and Deyal (2/2) led Zouks to bundle out Warriors’ on just 55 in 13.4 overs. Apart from these four bowlers, Mohammad Nabi (1/6) and Javelle Glenn (1/8) picked up one scalp each.

West Indies’ all-rounder Raheem Cornwall is renowned for his decent fitness despite carrying a bulky physique.

Cornwall came into the reckoning after dismissing Virat Kohli in a tour game during India’s trip to West Indies in 2016. Later, he picked the prized wickets of Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane in the same game to break the back of Indian middle-or??der.

During one of the net sessions, the Indian captain specifically asked Cornwall to bowl at him. Rahkeem has now tagged being handpicked by Kohli to bowl at him as the ‘breakthrough moment’ in his career.

“That was in a President’s XI game in St Kitts. I got a five-wicket haul in that game as well. I got Kohli lbw and Rahane caught bat-pad. They were basic off-spin deliveries with just a little bit of bounce. I also got Pujara bowled in that match – he was attempting a sweep shot,” Cornwall told ESPNCricinfo.

“I see it as a breakthrough moment for me where one of the best batsmen in the world is asking for me to come to bowl to him in the nets,” he added.
