The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction concluded after two action-packed days in Jeddah, where ten franchises engaged in intense bidding wars, showcasing tactical brilliance and making some surprising calls. While many players secured lucrative contracts, a few big names shockingly went unsold, marking what could be the end of their IPL careers. The auction not only highlighted teams’ strategic approaches but also served as a reminder of the fierce competition for limited spots in the league.

Familiar faces left unsold: IPL 2025 mega auction

Several IPL regulars, who have been mainstays in recent seasons, failed to attract any bids this year. This surprising outcome has raised questions about their future in the tournament. Factors such as declining form, lack of recent match practice, and high base prices played a signifi?cant role in these players being overlooked.

Among the notable unsold players were seasoned veterans and emerging stars alike, whose inability to adapt to the fast-paced T2?0 format may have cost them a place. Teams appeared more focused on building balanced squads, prioritizing specialist players over established names with inconsistent performances. For several players, the high base prices they set seemed to work against them. Franchises, especially toward the end of Day 2, were more cautious with their remaining budget, opting to invest in lesser-known talents or younger players with potential. This left several high-profile cricketers without a contract.

Despite going unsold, many of these players still possess the skills and experience to form a formidable playing XI. Here’s a hypothetical lineup of the top unsold players from the IPL 2025 mega auction:

1. Prithvi Shaw

Role: Opening Batter
Prithvi Shaw remains a dynamic batter known for his aggressive approach in the powerplay. Despite some inconsistent outings in IPL 2024, he displayed flashes of brilliance that highlighted his ability to dominate bowling attacks. Concerns ove??r his fitness and consistency might have tempered expectations at the auction. However, his overall domestic performances showcase his readiness to reclaim hi??s status as a powerplay enforcer.

2. David Warner

Role: Opening Batter (Captain)
David Warner, one of the IPL’s most successful batters, continues to deliver consistently. His leadership and experience make him a valuable asset, especially for teams seeking stability at the top of the order. Warner’s age might have raised questions, but his ability to anchor innings and adapt to challenging situations ensures he remains relevant in the shortest format.

3. Yash Dhull

Role: Top-Order Batter
Yash Dhull is an emerging talent whose temperament and technique have impressed in domestic cricket. Although his IPL opportunities were limited in 2023 and failed to get a game in the next edition, his potential to play the anchor role in the top order makes him a valuable prospect. Teams often look to groom such players for long-term success, given his abili?ty to handle pressure.

4. Daryl Mitchell

Role: All-Rounder
Daryl Mitchell’s versatility as a middle-order batter and medium-p??ace bowler makes him a dep??endable option in T20 cricket. Despite limited match winning performance for his franchise in IPL 2024, his consistent performances in international cricket highlight his ability to adapt to various roles. His knack for handling pressure situations adds to his credentials as a utility player.

5. Sarfaraz Khan

Role: Middle-Order Batter
Sarfaraz Khan has built a reputation as a domestic run machine. Nevertheless, translating that success into the IPL has been challenging. His ability to play spin effectively and anchor innings gives him an edge, though que??s??tions about his adaptability in high-pressure T20 scenarios persist.

6. Sikandar Raza

Role: All-Rounder

7. KS Bharat

Role: Wicketkeeper-Batter
KS Bharat is a steady performer with the bat and a reliable presence behind the stumps. Whi?le his batting style is more suited to stabilizing innings, it might not align with the explosive requirements of the IPL. His proficiency as a keeper, nonetheless, makes h?im a strong backup option in any squad.

8. Shardul Thakur

Role: All-Rounder

10. Piyush Chawla

Role: Leg-Spinner
Piyush Chawla defied expectations with his consistent wicket-taking ability in IPL 2024. His? experience and control in the middle overs make him a reliable spinner. Despite his age, Chawla’s tactical acumen and ability to deliver under pressure remain unparalleled.

11. Shivam Mavi

Role: Fast Bowler
Shivam Mavi’s pace and swing make him a promising prospect, though his IPL career was marred? by inconsistency which included no participation i?n the last two seasons. Veteran Indian pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been announced as the captain of Uttar Pradesh (UP) for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2024-25, set to be played from November 23 to December 15. This will mark an important leadership shift for the team, as star batter Rinku Singh, who captained UP in last year’s tournament, will now play under Bhuvneshwar’s guidance. With his vast international experience and tactical acumen, Bhuvneshwar’s appointment is seen as a strategic move to boost UP’s chances in the highly competitive T20 tournament.

Leadership change: From Rinku Singh to Bhuvneshwar Kumar

In the previous SMAT season, Rinku led Uttar Pradesh and showcased his leadership skills. However, the team’s performance under his captaincy saw them narrowly miss the knockout stages. This year, the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) has entrusted Bhuvneshwar with the responsibility of captaincy, aiming to leverage his exte?nsive experience in both domestic and international cricket.

Rinku remains a key player in the squad and is expected to play a pivotal role, particularly in the middle order. Madhav Kaushik, a consistent performer in the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 with 346 runs in five innings, has been named vice-captain. His presence strengthens the leadership group, complementing Bhuvneshwar’s bowling expertise with batting insights.

Star-studded players for SMAT 2024

The? Uttar Pradesh squad is packed with talent, featuring several prominent names:

  • Rinku Singh: Known for his finishing abilities and recent IPL heroics.
  • Nitish Rana: An experienced all-rounder and IPL stalwart.
  • Yash Dayal: A rising left-arm pacer retained by Gujarat Titans in IPL.
  • Piyush Chawla: The veteran leg-spinner adds depth and experience.
  • Shivam Mavi and Mohsin Khan: Promising young pacers with IPL experience.

Group C challenges and schedule

Uttar Pradesh are placed in Group C alongside Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Manipur, Haryana, Arunachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and Jharkhand. The team will play all their matches in ?Mumbai, beginning their campaign against ??Delhi at the Wankhede Stadium on November 23.

Bhuvneshwar is no stranger to captaincy, having led Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on multiple occasions. While his IPL leadership stint yielded mixed results, his strategic mind and ability to perform under pressure make him an ideal leader for UP. His recent release from SRH ahead of the IPL 2025 auction provides an opportunity for him to focus entirely on this domestic season and contribute to UP’s success.

UP’s SMAT history and aspirations

Uttar Pradesh have a rich history in the SMAT, having won the trophy in 2015-16 under Suresh Raina and finishing as runners-up in 2013-14. Last season, under Rinku’s leadership, UP finished second in their group with three wins in six matches, but a loss to Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh hurt their qualification chances. With Bhuvneshwar at the helm, the team aims to improve on last year’s results and make a strong push for their second title. The combination of Bhuvneshwar’s experience, Rinku’s finishing skills, and a well-rounded squad makes UP one of the teams to watch in this edition.

Piyush Chawla showcased his bowling prowess in Match 55 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, wreaking havoc for Mumbai Indians (MI) against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at Wankhede Stadium on Monday (May 6).

Opting to bat first, SRH openers Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head provided a steady start in the powerplay, with Head particularly aggressive, scoring a brisk 48 off 30 balls. However, the tide turned when MI’s bowlers, led by spinner Piyush Chawla, intervened. Chawla’s spell saw SRH losing wickets at regular intervals after the decent start.

Piyush Chawla’s bowling masterclass

Chawla’s first breakthrough came on the third delivery of the eleventh over when he dismissed the dangerous Travis Head. Delivering a tossed-up delivery on the leg stump, Chawla enticed Head into attempting a sweep shot. Nevertheless, Head failed to connect cleanly, resulting in a straightforward catch for Tilak Varma at deep backward square.

Crucial wicket of Heinrich Klaasen

In his subsequent over, Chawla continued his impressive spell by claiming another crucial wicket. This time, his victim was Heinrich Klaasen, who attempted to take on the spinner by playing across the line to a quicker googly delivered by Chawla. Nonetheless, Klaasen’s intentions were foiled as he only managed to get an inside edge onto the stumps, resulting in the timber being disturbed and sending the batsman back to the pavilion.

Here’s the video:

Chawla strikes again

Chawla grabbed his third wicket of the match by dismissing the SRH batter, Abdul Samad, LBW. Chawla bowled a length ball on the stumps. Samad was looking to work it on the leg side but ended up playing all over it and got hit on the pad.?? Samad found himself adjudged out by the on-field umpire, prompting him to review the decision. Despite the review, replays confirme??d the dismissal, as Samad had already started walking towards the boundary ropes after seeing the replay.

Pat Cummins’ late blitz boosts MI’s total

In the concluding phase of the innings, SRH’s skipper Pat Cummins displayed his batting prowess by playing a crucial innings. He scored 35 runs off just 17 balls, which included two boundaries and two sixes. Cummins’ aggressive batting helped propel his team’s total to a competitive 173/8 at the end of their allotted 20 overs. Meanwhile skipper Hardik Pandya and Chawla eme??rged as the standout bowlers for MI, each scalping thr??ee wickets.

Mumbai Indians (MI) suffered a resounding nine-wicket defeat against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 encounter at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on Monday (April 22). The only wicket-taker for Mumbai was veteran spinner Piyush Chawla, who dismissed the dangerous Jos Buttler, Rajasthan’s Impact Player.

Piyush Chawla’s clever delivery: Outfoxing Jos Buttler

The leg-spinner cunningly delivers a quicker wrong’un, pitching it on a shortish length around the off-stump. Buttler, anticipating the punch, moves back but is deceived as the ball subtly turns in, sneaking between bat and pad to shatter the off-stump. Buttler departs after a brisk 35 runs innings off 25 balls, marked by six boundaries. Chawla erupts into a pumped-up, fierce celebration, fueled by his success in dismissing Buttler, particularly intensified after Buttler’s boundary on the preceding delivery.

The duo forged a partnership of 119 runs for the second wicket off just 64 balls. Jaiswal’s spectacular century, scoring 104 runs in 60 balls with nine boundaries and seven sixes, stood out.
