In the third ODI between Sri Lanka and New Zealand at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, New Zealand opted to bat first after winning the toss. Openers Will Young and Tim Robinson came out with intent, hammering 24 runs in the first three overs. However, their aggressive start was halted when Sri Lankan captain Charith Asalanka produced a moment of brilliance.

Charith Asalanka’s stunning catch to remove Tim Robinson

New Zealand’s fiery start in the third ODI against Sri Lanka at Pallekele came to an abrupt halt in the fourth over. Robinson, looking to capitalize on his aggressive intent, attempted to loft a full-length delivery from Mohamed Shiraz. The ball, shaping into the batter, caused Robinson to ??mistime his drive as the bat turned slightly in his hands.

Positioned at mid-off, Sri Lanka’s skipper Asalanka showcased exceptional athleticism. He leaped high to his left, almost doubling his stature, and pulled off a breathtaking one-handed catch. Robinson, dismissed for 9 off 7 balls (two boundaries), walked back disappointed as Sri Lanka celebrated an early breakthrough. The dismissal left New Zealand at 24/1 in 3.2 overs and energized the home side.

Sri Lanka’s steady recovery and rain halts progress

After Robinson’s dismissal, Young and Henry Nicholls rebuilt the i??nnings with a steady partnership. Young, in fine form, showcased his class by piercing gaps with precise timing and accumulating runs through ??elegant drives. Nicholls complemented him with controlled aggression, keeping the scoreboard ticking. Their partnership added 88 runs for the second wicket, taking New Zealand to 112/1 in 21 overs.

Young reached a well-crafted half-century off 61 balls, laced with eight boundaries, while Nicholls remained steady with a fluent 46 off 51 balls. Despite the disciplined bowling of Maheesh Theekshana and Jeffrey Vandersay, the Blackcaps duo maintained a healthy run rate, ensuring the visitors remained?? in control.

However, just as New Zealand appeared poised to accelerate, rain intervened, forcing a halt to the game. The players left the field with New Zealand holding a slight edge, ?though the interruption left both teams pondering revised strategies for the remainder of the match.

Sri Lanka and New Zealand are set to face off in the third and final ODI of the series at the Pallekele International? Cricket Stadium on Tuesday (November 19). With the hosts already sealing the series with a 2-0 lead, t??his match serves as a dead rubber. However, New Zealand will aim to end the tour on a positive note by winning the last encounter.

Sri Lanka’s dominance and New Zealand’s quest for redemption

Sri Lanka’s commanding performances in the first two ODIs have ensured a series win, showcasing their balanced side and strong form at home. With the final game offering an opportunity to experiment, Sri Lanka might give chances to fringe players while aiming for a clean sweep to boost their morale ahead of upcoming challenges.

Despite their struggles in the ODI series, the Blackcaps will aim to finish their campaign with a win. While their T20I series performance showcased resilience, their?? ODI outings have highlighted inconsistencies in both batting and bowling. A win in Pallekele would help them salvage some pride and gather momentum for future assignments.

The Pallekele pitch is expected to be a batter-friendly surface, making it easier for players to time their shots. In a pulsating finale to the T20I series, the Indian cricket team, led by Suryakumar Yadav, secured a dramatic victory over Charith Asalanka’s Sri Lanka in the third and final T20I at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday (July 30). India achieved a clean sweep in the series, winning 3-0, despite facing a challenging final match that extended into a Super Over. The Indian side emerged victorious from a precarious position, largely due to the exceptional bowling performances of Rinku Singh and Suryakumar in the final overs of the match.

India’s resilient performance

Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bowl first, putting India on the back foot early on. The Lankan bowlers restricted the Indian top order significantly, with only Shubman Gill managing to make a substantial impact. Gill scored 39 runs off 37 balls, while the rest of the top-order struggled, with Yashasvi Jaiswal (10), Sanju Samson (0), Rinku (1), Suryakumar (8) and Shivam Dube (13) all failing to contribute effectively. ?India lost five wickets for just 45 runs, struggli?ng to build a solid foundation.

Despite the top-order collapse, Riyan Parag (26 off 18 balls) and Washington Sundar (25 off 18 balls) provided some valuable contributions. Their efforts, along with Gill’s innings, helped India post a total of 137 runs for 9 wickets in 20 overs. Maheesh Theekshana was the st?andout bowler for Sri Lanka, claiming three wickets.

Sri Lanka’s chase and super over drama

In response, Sri Lanka’s chase was anchored by Kusal Mendis, who scored 43 runs off 41 balls. However, key moments in the match turned the tide in India’s favor. Washington Sundar‘s crucial double-wicket over in the 17th over, where he dismissed two Sri Lankan batters, significantly tightened the contest. When Sri Lanka needed 9 runs from 12 balls, Rinku, making his T20 debut as a bowler, delivered a stunning 19th over. He dismissed Kusal Perera (46 off 34 balls) and Ramesh Mendis, leaving Sri Lanka ne??eding 6 runs off the final over.

Captain Suryakumar took charge of the last over for India and delivered a remarkable performance, ta??king two wickets and conceding only five runs. This sup?erb bowling effort restricted Sri Lanka to 137 runs for 8 wickets in their 20 overs, and the match proceeded to the Super Over.

The decisive super over: India’s thrilling finish

The Super Over ?began with Sri Lanka batting first, facing a crucial task to set a challenging target for India. Sri Lanka’s innings nevertheless was quickly disrupted by India’s Sundar, who delivered a masterful performan?ce.

Sundar’s accuracy and composure under pressure were evident as he restricted Sri ??Lanka to just 3 runs in their Super Over. His first delivery resulted in a single, and he followed up with a well-placed ball that yielded another single. Sundar’s next delivery trapped a Sri Lankan batter in front of the stumps for a critical wicket. After another dot ball and a single, Sundar struck again, taking another ??wicket and ensuring the Sri Lankans could only manage a total of 3 runs.

With the modest target set, India’s Suryakumar took on the challenge of chasing down the runs. He faced the first ball of the Super Over with intent, and with a powerful strok??e, struck a boundary through the infield. This boundary not only secured the winning runs but also sealed the match for India, confirming their clean sweep of the series with a 3-0 victory.

Star Indian leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi showcased a spectacular bowling performance in the second T20I  of the three-match series against Sri Lanka at Dambulla on Sunday (July 28). Bishnoi’s spell of 3/26 in his four overs was pivotal in restricting the hosts to 161/9 after they looked set for a massive total at one point. His disciplined bowling broke crucial partnerships and pegged back the Sri Lankan innings.

Turning the tide

Sri Lanka seemed to be in control at 130/2, but Bishnoi’s introduction in the 10th over dramatically changed the game’s momentum. He immediately made an impact by breaking a crucial 54-run partnership, dismissing Pathum Nissanka for 32. This wicket proved to be a pivotal moment, as Bishnoi maintained relent??less pressure with his precise lines and smart variations, turning the tide in favor of his team.

Decisive 17th over by Ravi Bishnoi

In a game-changing 17th over, Bishnoi dismissed two former Sri Lankan captains, Dasun Shanaka and Wanindu Hasaranga, both for golden ducks. Shanaka was undone by a brilliantly executed googly, managing only an inside edge that shattered his stumps. Hasaranga, attempting a slog sweep, was also deceived by a googly, resulting in his stumps being sent cartwheeling. These twin strikes left Sri Lanka in disarray, significantly disrupting their momentum. Struggling to recover, they managed to add only 31 runs in the final five overs, drastically falling shor??t of a competitive total.

Early onslaught by Sri Lankan openers and India’s strong comeback

Earlier in the innings, Indian bowlers Arshdeep Singh and Mohammed Siraj struggled to make early breakthroughs. The Sri Lankan openers, Kusal Mendis and Nissanka, launched an aggressive assault, reaching 55/0 within the powerplay. Their relentless attack forced Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav to make tactical changes.

In the 9th over, Arshdeep returned to the attack and managed to dismiss the dangerous Mendis, who was going strong. This breakthrough was crucial in slowing down the Sri Lankan scoring rate. Despite Mendis’ departure, Nissanka continued his aggressive innings, with Kusal Perera providing support. Hardik Pandya‘s intervention in the 16th over was another key moment in the match. Pandya managed to dismiss Kusal Perera, who was anchoring the Sri Lankan innings with a brilliant half century. Perera’s wicket triggered a collapse, and Sri Lanka’s innings nosedived from 130/2 to 161/9, thanks in large part to Bishnoi’s exceptional spell and Pandya’s timely breakthrough.

Sri Lanka emerged victorious in the Women’s Asia Cup 2024, defeating India by eight wickets in a thrilling final at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium. Despite India’s strong performance in the group stage and semi-final against Bangladesh, Sri Lanka outplayed them in the high-stakes match. Key performances from Chamari Athapaththu and Harshitha Samarawickrama ensured Sri Lanka’s triumph in the tournament.

India sets a challenging target

After being asked to bat first, India posted a competitive total of 165 for six in their allotted 20 overs. Smriti Mandhana, continuing her stellar form from the semi-final, laid a solid foundation with a superb knock of 60 off 47 balls, featuring 10 boundaries. Mandhana’s 44-run opening partnership set the tone for India’s innings.

However, the middle order struggled as Uma Chetry and Harmanpreet Kaur failed to make significant contributi?ons. Despite these setbacks, Jemimah Rodrigues and Richa Ghosh steadied the ship. Rodrigues scored a quickfire 29 off 16 balls, while Ghosh added 30 off 14 balls, ensuring India maintained their momentum. Kavisha Dilhari was the standout bowler for Sri Lan??ka, with figures of 4-0-36-2, while Udeshika Prabodhani, Sachini Nisansala, and Chamari Athapaththu each took a wicket.

Sri Lanka’s chase: A blend of stability and aggression

Sri Lanka’s run chase got off to a shaky start with Vishmi Gunaratne being run out early. However, Athapaththu and Samarawickrama anchored the innings, forming a crucial 87-run partnership for the second wicket. Athapaththu, who scored over 300 runs in the tournament, reached her half-century off just 32 balls, showcasing her aggressive intent.

Deepti Sharma provided a breakthrough for India, bowling Athapaththu around her legs for 61 off 43 balls. Despite this setback, Sri Lanka needed 72 runs off the final eight overs. Samarawickrama took charge, remaining unbeaten with a composed 69-run knock. Dilhari played a vital supporting role, contributing an unbeaten 30 off 16 balls. This ensured Sri Lanka reached the target with eight balls to spare, ending their four-match losing streak against India in the Women’s Asia Cup finals.

Historic Women’s Asia Cup 2024 title

This victory marked Sri Lanka’s resurgence in the Women’s Asia Cup, with their only other non-Indian winner being Bangladesh in 2018. The win not only showcased Sri Lanka’s cricketing prowess but also highlighted their ability to perform under pressure. The final was a testament to their skill and determination, as they outclassed a formidable Indian side to claim the prestigious title.

Maheesh Theekshana also found it challenging to contain the Indian batters. Wanindu Hasaranga was relatively more economical, taking a w?icket and conceding fewer runs. H?owever, the highlight of the Sri Lankan bowling effort was Pathirana’s spell, where he claimed 4 wickets for 40 runs, proving to be the standout performer in an otherwise tough day for the bowlers.

India are set to start a new chapter in their cricketing journey under the guidance of head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav. The team is gearing up for the three-match T20I series a??gainst Sri Lanka, with the first match scheduled for Saturday (July 27), in Pallekele. This series marks the beginning of a new leadership era, and the Indian squad is a mix of promising youngsters and seasoned players, aiming for a successful campaign.

Wasim Jaffer’s playing XI for India

Former Indian batter and commentator Wasim Jaffer has revealed his ideal playing XI on social media platform X for India in the opening match against Sri Lanka. As anticipated, Yashasvi Jaiswal will open the batting alongside vice-captain Shubman Gill. Gill’s solid technique and consistent form are expected to provide a stable start, while Jaiswal’s aggressive stroke play adds a dynamic edge to the top order.

Middle-order and all-rounders

Rishabh Pant retained his position as the wicketkeeper-batter, known for his aggressive batting and sharp wicketkeeping skills. He is slotted at the number three position in Jaffer’s lineup. Suryakumar, the captain, will bring his innovative and explosive batting style to the number four spot, which is crucial in steering the team to a competitive to?tal.

Shivam Dube and Hardik Pandya are included as the all-rounders at No. 5 and No. 6 respectively, providing depth in batting and valuable medium-pace options. Rinku Singh, known for his finishing abilities, is positioned at No. 7 to add firepower to the lower middle order. Reliable spin all-rounder Axar Patel and leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi are included at No. 8 and No. 9, resp??ectively, with Bishnoi’s leg-spin being a potent weapon in the middle overs.

Pace attack and Sanju Samson’s exclusion

The pace attack will be spearheaded by Mohammed Siraj, with Arshdeep Singh adding fresh energy to the bowling lineup. Notably, Jaffer has chosen to ignore Sanju Samson as a wicketkeeper-batter, opting for Pant instead. Samson, who was benched throughout the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2024, played three matches in the five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe and scored a match-winning fifty in the final game. Despite this, Jaffer has ??decided to retain Pant for his consistency and glove work?.
