In a thrilling and closely contested clash at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday, South Africa emerged victorious over Pakistan in Match 26 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

The hard-fought encounter marked the fourth consecutive loss for the Babar Azam-led side, further intensifying their struggle in the tournament. With only two wins in six matches, Pakistan now find themselves tee??tering on the brink of elimination from the cricketing extravaganza.

Game-changing DRS verdict

During a pivotal moment in the game, the last ball of the 46th over held a peculiar twist as South Africa needed eight runs for victory. Haris Rauf‘s delivery landed on a perfect length and made contact with the Proteas batter Tabraiz Shamsi‘s front foot. Pakistan fielders immediately shouted for a huge LBW appeal, but the umpire was not convinced.

As the on-field umpire called it not out, Pakistan opted for Decision Review System (DRS) referral. The bal??l tracking was promptly implemented, unveiling that the impact w??as in line with the stumps, even though the ball had initially pitched outside off and just grazed the leg stump.

Despite the close call, the on-field umpire’s decision was upheld, granting the batter a lifeline which ultimately led the Temba Bavuma-led side to secure their fifth win in the tournament. The intense moment added a layer of d??rama to an already gripping match.

Babar Azam’s to-the-point take on the decision

After the match, Babar humbly accepted the crucial role of the DRS, considering it an inherent aspect of the game. He recognized that if the on-field umpire had ruled out, it would have worked in Pakistan’s favour. Additionally, the 29-year-old acknowledged the “Umpire’s Call” element in DRS and the need to respect and accept those decisions.

“To be honest, it’s part of the game. If the umpire had given OUT, it would have favored us. It’s Umpire’s Call on the drs and we have to take it,” Babar said during the post-match presentation.

Babar Azam, the Pakistan skipper, recently dethroned Virat Kohli from the no. 1 spot in ICC ODI rankings. The 26-year-old had a great series against South Africa, where Pakistan defeated the latter in their backyard. Thus, Pakistan became the first?? Asian team to win a series twice in South Africa. Azam slammed 196 runs in 4 T20Is and won the Player of the Series award.

Meanwhile, the former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar took to Twitter to applaud Azam for his ingenious shot selection. Akht?ar posted a video of Azam to reveal t??he reason behind the street smartness of Pakistani cricketers.

The video was divided into two halves. In one half, Azam can be seen playing indoor cricket, whereas the other half was a clip from the 3rd T20I of the Pakistan tour of Sou?th Africa when Azam smacked 122 runs off 59 balls at the SuperSport Park in Centurion.

While playing indoors, Azam can be seen tak??ing the bat near his feet and guiding the ball behind the wicket-keeper. In the parallel clip of the match, the Lahore-born successfully attempted a similar shot to a yorker directed to his stumps. He took the bat near his feet and cheekily guided the ball towards the third man.

Captioning the video, Akhtar wrote that the street smartness of Pakistani cricketer??s comes from playing gully, indoor and backyard cricket. These forms of cricket are the hub of innovation.

“When we say Pakistani cricketers are street smart. This is where the street smartness comes from. Indoor cricket, gully cricket, backyard cricket. This teaches us innovation! When we say Pakistani cricketers are street smart. This is where the street smartness comes from. Indoor cricket, gully cricket, backyard cricket. This teaches us innovation!” Akhtar wrote.

On Friday, Pakistan edged past South Africa in a close encounter at the SuperSport Pa??rk Stadium in Centurion and won by three wickets.

Batting first, South Africa lost their opener Aiden Markram within 16 runs on the board. In came Russie van der Dussen who walked shoulder to shoulder with Janneman Malan to put up a partnership of 57 runs at? a run rate of around 9.

Faheem Ashraf, the right-arm pacer, provided the much-needed breakthroughs by taking wickets in quick succession. ??The hosts were eventually bundled out for 144 in 19.3 overs.

In response, the Pakistan opener Mohammad Rizwan was stumped for a knot. Still, the partnership of the two Pakistani star batsmen, Fakhar Zaman (60) and Bazar Azam (24), looked to guarantee a smooth sail for the visitors. The two new dependables of the visitors’ side shared a stand of 91 runs for the second wicket and scored around a run rate of 10 in the first nine overs.

However, the one-sided match suddenly looked poised and could have gone either way when Pakistan gave away their wickets for trifles and were six down in the next five overs. This resulted in additional pressure on the Pakistani batsmen as they now had to score run-a-ball 29 to surpass South Africa’s target.

The match came as close as Pakistan needing 16 runs off the last two overs with two lower-order batsmen Faheem Ashraf and Mohammed Nawaz, at the crease.

The shortest format of the game is all about surprises. The tides turned again when the Proteas pacer Sisanda Magala took the wicket of Ashraf (7) and also bowled four consecutive dot balls. Now, the target seemed impro?bable for Pakistan as they had to make 16 runs off eight balls.

The last over became the talk of the town when Magala, after putting pressure on the batsmen, bowled three consecutive no-balls and was also smashed for a six by Nawaz. Thus, Magala, who could have been the South-African hero, eventually gave ?away the game by? conceding ten runs.

Now, the match was an easy glide for Pakistan as they crossed the finish line with the lower-order heroics of Nawaz, who smoked ?the ball for another six in the final over.

The game of cricket was essentially a face-off between the two major departments, i.e., batting and bowling. The art of fielding was treated as an optional department, with only a handful of brilli?ant fielders in the classical age.

However, it all changed with ju??st one moment of brilliance from a young South African cricketer named Jonty Rhodes.

During the 1992 World Cup in Australia, Rhodes, manning at ‘point? exhibited his prowess in the field with a lightning run-out of Pakistan batsman Inzamam-ul-Haq.

Young Inzy, who had an exceptional tournament, was threatening to take the game away from? the South Africans, batting on 48. Inzamam tried to slog the bowler over the square, by coming inside t??he line of the ball.

But, Inzy could not?? get the bat to the ball and ended up padding it towards Point. Without the ??sight of the ball, Inzamam tried to pinch a single.

Watching? Inzamam halfway down the crease, Rhodes quickly latched on to the ball and backed himself to reach faster than Inzy and opted not to throw at the stumps.

Charging in, Rhodes demolished?? all three stumps before Inzamam c??ould get back to his crease.

South Africa, ??then, we??nt on to win the game by 20 runs, proving how fielding can help win games. Through this one act of genius, Rhodes revolutionised the fielding department.

??From there on, the game has seen only the best fielders in the world patrolling the ‘point?region, namely, Herschelle Gibbs, Ricky Ponting, Mic??hael Clarke, Yuvraj Singh, and Ravindra Jadeja.

June 27 marks the birthday of the South African fielding maestro. Today, he turned 51. Therefore, let’s have a look at the moment which defines Rhodes’ career.
