Ireland Women’s cricket team secured a resounding victory in the second T20I against Bangladesh Women at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, sealing the three-match series with a game to spare. A stellar all-round performance by Orla Prendergast was pivotal in Ireland’s 47-run triumph, as the vis??itors outplayed their ho??sts in every department to take an unassailable 2-0 lead.

Ireland’s Orla Prendergast lays a solid foundation

Winning the toss and electing to bat first, Ireland posted a challenging total of 134/5 in their allotted 20 overs. The innings were anchored by Prendergast and Laura Delany, who showcased aggressive yet calculated batting. Prendergast’s quickfire 32 off 25 balls, featuring three fours and a towering six, set the tone for the innings. Delany, with her composed knock of 35 off just 25 deliveries, added crucial stability, striking four boundaries during? her stay at the crease. Their partnership ensured Ireland capitalized on the middle overs despite disciplined bowling from Bangladesh.

The standout bowler for the hosts was left-arm spinner Nahida Akter, whose economical spell of 2/20 in four overs provided a brief respi?te for Bangladesh.

Bangladesh struggles to chase down target

Chasing a target of 135, Bangladesh faltered under relentless pressure from Ireland’s bowlers, being bowled out for a mere 87 in 17.1 overs. While Sharmin Akhter’s 38 off 43 balls showed some resistance, the rest of the batting lineup crumbled. Shorna Akter contributed 20 runs.

Ireland’s bowlers exploited the conditions effectively, with Prendergast leading the charge. Her fiery spell of 3/17 in 3.1 overs dismantled Bangladesh’s middle and lower order, while Arlene Kelly provided crucial support with figures of 2/12 in her three overs. Prendergast was rightfully named Player of the Matc?h for her extraordinary all-round performance. Her 32-run contribution with the bat and three-wicket haul with the ball were instrumental in ?Ireland’s victory, highlighting her importance as a key player in the team.

With this win, Ireland has not only clinched the se??ries but also displayed significant improvement and depth in their squad. The final T20I will serve as an opportunity for Bangladesh to salvage pride, while Ireland will aim for a clean sweep to cap off a remarkable to??ur.

Ireland Cricket have announced their Women’s squad for the upcoming tour of Bangladesh, scheduled to take place from 27 November to 9 December 2024. Gaby Lewis has been named captain of both the ODI and T20I sides, marking her first tour as permanent captain. The Irish squad for the white-ball series features a blend of youth and experience, with an average ag?e of under 23.

Challenging tour ahead

The three ODIs and three T20Is against Bangladesh are? set to be a key challenge for Ireland, especially as the ODIs form part of the ICC Women’s Championship. Ireland has made significant progress recently, with? notable victories, including a series win over Sri Lanka and their first ODI win over England since 2001. Despite these strides, Ireland is still ranked 11th in ODIs and 10th in T20Is, whereas Bangladesh holds 8th place in ODIs and 9th in T20Is.

Head-to-Head history

The two teams last met in 2022, with Bangladesh leading the head-to-head encounters across formats. Out of 18 meetings,?? Bangladesh has won 8 of the 11 T20Is and 4 of the 7 ODIs, with 2 games ending in no results.

Combination of youth and experience

Ireland’s squad for the Bangladesh tour beautifully blends youth and experience, providing the team with a balanced mix of fresh talent and seasoned players. While the team boasts several young players with immense potential, such as Ava Canning and Freya Sargent, the presence of experienced campaigners like Laura Delany and Lewis ensures the? squad has the right leadership and stability.

Delany’s return from injury will strengthen the middle order, while Lewis, as captain, will be key in guiding the team through th?e challenges posed by the Bangladesh side. This fusion of youth and experience gives Irela?nd the versatility and resilience needed for a competitive tour.

“Obviously, welcoming back Laura Delany from injury will make a massive difference to that middle order. Her experience and quality across both formats is key, but she also balances the team beautifully for us in terms of her being able to bowl ?so it gives us a chance to play an extra batter, if needed. With two all-rounders in the top four, and Amy Hunter our keeper also opening, it gives a nice balance to the team and we look in good shape with everyone fit and healthy at the start of the tour,” said Ed Joyce, Head Coach of Ireland Women ??in an official statement.

In an exciting clash at Castle Avenue, Ireland Women secured a memorable 5-wicket win over England Women in the second T20I ??of the England Women tour of Ireland 2024.

Disciplined bowling keep England batters in check

England’s innings was anchored by Tammy Beaumont, who top-scored with 40 off 34 balls, laced with 7 boundaries. Bryony Smith (28 off 26) and Paige ?Scholfield (34 off 21) also contributed handy runs in the middle order. Orla Prendergast leads Ireland to a memorable win

Chasing 170, Ireland got off to a shaky start, losing o??pener Amy Hunter for just 1? run in the third ball of the innings.
