England‘s Ollie Pope demonstrated his batting mastery by scoring his sixth Test centur??y on the Day 1 of the second Test match against the West Indies  in Nottinghamshire.

After Alzarri Joseph dismissed Zak Crawley for a duck in the very first over, Pope stepped in to stabilize the innings. He formed a vital 105-run partnership with Ben Duckett, who scored a br?isk 71 off 59 balls before being dismissed.

Century milestone for Ollie Pope

At the lunch interval on day one, Pope was well-settled on 47 off 75 balls. He?? continued his composed batting after lunch, reaching his half-century in 81 ba??lls. The West Indies team missed opportunities to dismiss him, dropping him twice, which allowed him to maintain his momentum.

Pope’s milestone century came in the 46th over, bowled by Jayden Seales. A well-placed boundary to deep square leg brought up his sixth Test hundred, completed in 143 balls. His innings was a blend of patience and aggression, crucial in bolstering England’s position.

Support from a ‘Lucky Charm’

Post-match, Pope revealed his delight in having Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale among the spectators at Trent Bridge. A dedicated Arsenal fan, Pope considers Ramsdale his “lucky charm.” Ramsdale, part of the England squad that finished runners-up at Euro 2024, was also present when Pope scored a double century against Ireland at Lord’s.

“I’m obviously a big Arsenal fan, so I go and support him a fair bit. He seems to be my lucky charm on the cricket pitch as well! He’s come to two other games and in one of them I scored 200. It always happens to be the day he’s there that I get the runs, so I think he can come more often,” Pope was quoted as saying by the Guardian.

England’s commanding total against the West Indies

England, after being put in to bat first, reached a commanding total of 416 all out on the opening day. Pope’s resilient 121 was the cornerstone of England’s innings, providing a strong platform for the hosts in the second Test against the West Indies at Trent Bridge. His innings, marked by grit and determination, ensured that England ended the day in a formidable position.

India’s leg-spinner, Yuzvendra Chahal, has kicked off his County Championship 2023 stint with Kent in style, securing three wickets against Nottinghamshire in a Division One fixture.

Chahal’s sensational debut for Kent

After being omitted from the squad for both the Asia Cup 2023 and the ODI World Cup 2023, the 33-year-old made a resounding return with a stellar performance, registering impressive figures of 29-10-63-3. Chahal showcased his skills by dismissing Nottinghamshire’s top-order batters, including Matthew Montgomery, Lyndon James and Calvin Harrison, playing a pivotal role in restricting them to 219/8 at the end of Day 2 in response to Kent’s commanding 446.

After Shaheen Afridi‘s historic four wickets in the first over of T20 Blast 2023, another Pakistani player Imad Wasim took everyone by surprise as he bowled a double-wicket maiden over in the 3rd quarter-final match of the English league on Friday (July 7). Wasim’s sensational spell came for Nottinghamshire in a last-over thriller against Somerset.

Winning the toss and electing to bat first, Nottinghamshire’s innings got off to a shaky start as Joe Clarke and Alex Hales departed early without contributing much to the scoreboard. Although Colin Munro showe??d some promise with a quickfire ten off six deliveries, wick??ets kept falling at regular intervals for Nottinghamshire.

Matthew Montgomery steadied the innings with a well-constructed knock of 51 off 38 deliveries, comprising eight fours. Wasim provided a late flourish with his blistering 31 off just 15 balls, including two fours and a six, helping Nottinghamshire finish their inni?ngs at 157/ 6 in ??their allotted 20 overs. Somerset’s bowling attack put up an impressive display, with Craig Overton being the pick of the bowlers, claiming two wickets while conced??ing only 23 runs in his quot?a of four overs.

Chasing a target of 158, Somerset failed to start well as Tom Banton and Tom Kohler-Cadmore fell early without making significant contributions. Both Banton and Kohler-Cadmore fell victim to Wasim’s web of spin, which eventually turned out to be a double-wicket maiden over for the all-rounder.

It all happened in the second ov??er of the Somer??set innings when Wasim trapped Banton off a slower delivery on the first ball of his spell as the latter tried to play a reverse sweep and misjudged it completely. Following the dismissal of Banton, the 34-year-old all-rounder conceded no run on the next four deliveries and then went on to clean up Cadmore with a ripper on the final ball, making the over a double wicket maiden.

However, despite a few early setbacks, Will Smeed (22 off 18 balls) and Tom Abell (26 off 21 balls) steadied the ship and kept the innings going for Somerset. But it was Lewis Gregory who turned the game in Somerset’s favour with his exceptional batting display. He played a blistering knock of 57 runs off just 34 deliveries, which included one four and five sixes. Gregory’s aggressive approach put the Nottinghamshire bowlers on the back foot and tilted the match in Somerset’s favour. Ben Green (35)?? provided valuable support to Gregory and helped Somerset achieve the target with five wickets and three balls to spare.

With the win in the knockout game, Somerset have now advance??d to the semi-finals of the T20 Blast 2023.

Vitality Blast 2023 witnessed an exhilarating encounter between Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire in the North Group at Trent Bridge. The match saw Nottinghamshire’s Shaheen Afridi breathe fire as he dismissed four ??batters ?in the opening over of the second innings and became the first bowler to do so in the history of T20 cricket.

Opting to bowl first after winning the toss, Warwickshire restricted Nottinghamshire to a total of 168 runs in their ?allotted 20 overs. Nottinghamshire’s innings got off to a shaky start, with Alex Hales and Joe Clarke departing early. Tom Moores then stood up for his side and played an explosive knock to bail them out of danger. Moores smashed 73 runs off just 42 balls, comprising six fours and four sixes. However, despite Moores’ heroics, the rest of the Nottinghamshire batting lineup struggled to contribute significantly. Hasan Ali and Jake Lintott were the picks of the bowlers for Warwickshire, taking three wickets each, while Glenn Maxwell chipped in with two wickets.

Chasing a target of 169 runs, Warwickshire faced a few early setbacks courtesy of a sensational opening over from Nottinghamshire pacer Shaheen. The 23-year-old seamer wreaked havoc in the Warwickshire by dismissing four of their batters in the first over itself and beco?ming the first bowler to achieve the feat in a T20 game.

The first wicket for Shaheen came in the form of Alex Davies off a yorker-length delivery. The left-arm fast bowler then cleaned up Chris Benjamin for a duck on the very next ball. Meanwhile, Dan Mousley and Ed Barnard further went on to become Shaheen’s third and fourth victims. The Pakistan cricketer was pumped up after the historic feat and celebrated in style.

Coming back to the match, despite the terrible start, Warwickshire managed to pull off a win against Nottinghamshire. Robert Yates played a remarkable innings for his team and scored impressive 65 runs off 46 deliveries. Yates was well supported by Jacob Bethell (27 runs) and Jake Lintott (27 runs) as?? they kept the scoreboard ticking. Although War??wickshire fumbled a bit towards the end and lost a few quick wickets, their lower-order batters held their nerve and achieved the target with five balls to spare.

Shaheen finished as the most successful bowler for Nottinghamshire with a brilliant spell of four wickets for 29 runs in his quota of four overs. Jake Ball also contributed well, taking three wickets, but it wasn’t enough as Warwickshire emerged as the winners and clinched a hard-fought two wickets victory.

Derbyshire Falcons locked horns with Nottinghamshire Outlaws in the 69th match of the Vitality T20 Blast 2023. However, Derbyshire failed to break the T20 jinx against Nottinghamshire. The Outlaws controlled their nerves to claim a three-wicket victory in a tight game. The Falcons fought till the end in defending a modest total of 1??42/6. But Pakistan cricketer Shaheen Shah Afridi smashed two sixes in the second last over as the Outlaws got home with eight balls to spare. Derbyshire remains without a T20 victory over Nottinghamshire since 2015.

Jake Ball provided the first breakthrough to the Notts by removing Reece for 15. At the same over, Ball dismissed Luis de Plooy for 2. Derbyshire couldn’t recover after losing key battera at the start and managed to reach only 142/6. Haider (42) remained the top scorer for the side.

In reply, Alex Hales and Joe?? Clarke provided the blistering start to the Notts and smashed 40 runs in just four overs. Once Clarke got out, Notts started losing the plot. They lost three wickets in the next nine runs. Hales then got a reliable partner in the form of veteran player Samit Patel. The du?o stitched a partnership of 38 runs and took the total to 87.

Mark Watt?, a left-arm spinner, came into the att??ack and stole the limelight with his clever deceptive bowling.

Generally, a cricket pitch is off 22 yards. But the delivery on which Watt dismissed Hales was from 25 yards. He bowled the white leather from a few steps behind the crease, taking everyone by surprise. Vitality Blast uploaded the video of the same on their social media account and captioned it as Who needs to use the crease?!”

Shaheen possesses the ability to consistently bowl accurate Yorkers, delivered at a high speed, with late movement and excellent control. Once Lancashire chose to bat first, Buttler and Phil Salt provided a blistering start to their innings. Opening the batting, the pair amassed 33 runs in just 3.2 overs. However, it took an exceptional effort from Shaheen to bre?ak their partnership.

Last month, explosive England opener Alex Hales said he was ready to make a return to the national cricket team and hoped to have a conversation regarding his future in the international arena. Though there hasn’t been any news concerning that, but Hales has given English selectors a timely reminder of his abilities with an unbeaten century in the ongoing T20 Blast 2021.

While playing for Nottinghamshire, the right-handed batsman carried his bat with an unbeaten 101 off 66 deliveries against Lancashire at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on Saturday. The 32-year-old smashe??d 12 fours and 4 sixes during his phenomenal batting display.

The destructive knock by Hales helped Nottinghamshire to post 173/6 in their allotted 20 overs. The next-best came from skipper Steven Mullaney‘s willow, scoring a 16-ball 25 as the rest of the batters struggled to stay in the middle for a longer time.

For Lancashire, Saqib Mahmood was the pick of the bowlers. He bagg??ed a couple of scalps for 35? runs in his quota of 4 overs.

The official Twitter handle of Vitality Blast shared the highlights of Hales’ spectacular batting masterclass.

Here is the video:

Nottinghamshire rises to the second spot in North Group

When it comes to the chase, Lancashire lost wickets at regular intervals, but a half-century stand for the seventh wicket between Steven Croft (41) and Luke Wood (33 no) took the game down to the wire.

However, when the Dane Vilas-led side needed 20 from 9 balls, a well-set Steven Croft was sent back to the hut by Jake Ball, ending Lancashire’s hopes as they eventually fell short by seven runs.

The thrilling victory has taken Nottinghamshire to the second spot on the points table in the North Group. It was their fifth triumph out of a total of nine matches. The leader of the table are Yorkshire, with six wins out of nine games.

Brief scores: Nottinghamshire 173/6 in 20 overs (Alex Hales 101*; Saqib Mahmood 2/35) beat Lancashire 166/7 in 20 overs (Steven Croft 41, Alex Davies 39; Matthew Carter 3/17) by seven runs.
