Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria has lambasted ex-England cricketer Nick Compton for his remarks on Indian captain Virat Kohli. Compton had termed Kohli a foul-mouthed cricketer and claimed that he faced severe abuse from the Delhi-lad during England’s tour of India in 2012.

“Isn’t Kohli the most foul-mouthed individual? I’ll Never forget the barrage of abuse I received in 2012 when the swearing stunned me to the point that he did himself a serious disservice. It highlights what a level headed and grounded man Root, Tendulkar, Williamson et al. are,” Compton had tweeted.

However, after the backlash by fans on the micro-blogging website, Compton  deleted his tweet. Now, Kaneria has slammed the former Middlesex cricketer, saying the English players who sledged Jasprit Bumrah on the final day of Lord’s Test couldn’t handle the heat when Indian players gave it back to them.

“There is a former English cricketer who is disappointed with the way Virat Kohli shows his aggression. Is it fine when you do it? Do you have to rule all the time? Whenever there is a big team against you, they use the same tactics to nail you down that you use against them since so many years,” said Kaneria on his YouTube channel.

“You had started it when Jasprit Bumrah had walked out to bat. Jos Buttler had something to say to him, and many other players got chirpy,” he added.

Kaneria said that Kohli didn’t use any abusive language in the match, but he showed his aggression which played a major part behind Team India’s epic win.

“As captain, Kohli was just showing aggression, and the crowd was supporting him. Speaking of abusive language, we have played cricket, and unless there is a bit of banter, it is never fun. I don’t think Kohli used any abusive language. The aggression that Kohli showed was instrumental in India winning this Test match,” Kaneria added further.

It is a well-known fact that Indian captain Virat Kohli wears his heart on his sleeve whenever he steps on the cricket field. The Delhi-lad often gets involved in verbal spats as he likes to give it back to the opposition irrespective of the match situation.

A glimpse of such was seen in the recently concluded second Test between England and India at the iconic Lords Cricket Ground. Kohli was engaged in a war of words with English pacer James Anderson, wicket-keeper Jos Buttler and other players.

However, former England cricketer Nick Compton has reckoned India skipper as ‘the most foul-mouthed individual’. Compton took to Twitter and compared Kohli with the likes of Kane Williamson, Joe Root as well as Sachin Tendulkar, and reminisced the 2012 series when he was at the receiving end.

“Isn’t Kohli the most foul-mouthed individual? I’ll Never forget the barrage of abuse I received in 2012 when the swearing stunned me to the point that he did himself a serious disservice. It highlights what a level headed and grounded man Root, Tendulkar, Williamson et al. are,” Compton wrote on Twitter.

Meanwhile, fans on the micro-blogging website thrashed Compton for firing shots at Kohli. They trolled Compton for his own old duels with Kohli and reminded him of the incidents when English cricketers crossed the line while sledging players of other teams. After the online bashing, Compton later deleted his tweet.

Indian opener KL Rahul, who was named ‘Player of the Match’ in the Lord’s Test for his scintillating hundred, had said that if someone goes after one of their players, then the rest of the ten guys leaves no stone unturned to give it back.

“As a team, we are not shy to say a word or two. If someone goes at one of our players, then the rest of the ten guys get really pumped as well. Because that’s the kind of team we are, that’s the kind of team atmosphere and bonding we have that if you’re going after one of our guys, then it means you’re going after our whole team. So like I said, the bowlers were really keen to go out there and have a crack, and we all wanted to be in the middle and give it all in the 60 overs we were going to bowl,” Rahul had said in the presser.

All the cricketing events have either been postponed or suspended since mid-March due to the outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19) across the world.

The pandemic has allowed former, current cricketers to reflect on their careers and thus every now and then fans get to hear interesting stories.

Recently, former England opener Nick Compton recalled about an incident of ‘sledging’ he had with Indian batsman Virat Kohli over the latter’s love life during the 2012 Test series.

Speaking on the Edges and Sledges Cricket Podcast, Compton said: “I definitely got a few words from Virat Kohli during the series. I think I bumped into his ex-girlfriend at the time before the series when out for an evening with Kevin Pietersen and myself, Yuvraj Singh â€?all of us were there, and she was there.

“I just chatted to her and the word got back that I was speaking to her, and I don’t think Virat Kohli was very happy with that. He had a few words to say to me every time I walked out to bat. He was trying to say that it was his girlfriend, and she was saying that it was her ex-boyfriend. It was like, ‘Who’s got the story right here,â€?you know what I mean?”

Compton further claimed the English players tried to rile Kohli by talking about it whenever he was batting.

“It was quite funny at the time, and the players in our England camp caught hold of it. We used it as a way to keep winding him up and, you know, trying to get in his head.

“But he’s a world-class performer, and he came back and scored a good hundred in the last [game in Nagpur]. And obviously his career has gone on from strength to strength. But it was a funny joke that we had throughout the series and something that I always smile about. But everything was in good faith,” he said.

In the series, Compton managed to score 208 runs in four matches at an average of 34.67 with a top score of 57 in the third Test at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. It was also the series when Compton made his debut for the Three Lions. He went on to play 16 Tests, scoring 775 runs with the highest score of 117 against New Zealand in Dunedin.

Back then Kohli was also in the initial days of his Test career. From the personal front, Kohli’s life changed in 2013 when he met Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma. They featured together in an advertisement and tied the knots in December 2017. Currently, they are one of the most talked-about celebrity couples in India.

However, when Anushka was busy dating Ranveer Singh, Virat wasn’t single either. The cricketer was dating a Brazilian model Izabelle Leite.

The relationship between the two lasted for a few years. The couple was often spotted in each other’s company. Interestingly, Virat even wrote, “Te Amoo” which means “I Love you” in one of his text messages to her.
