New Zealand registered their first ever series win on Caribbean soil after defeating West Indies in the? deciding third and final ODI ??by five wickets at Kensington Oval in Bridget??own, B??arbados, on Sunday.

A collective batting effort helped the Black Caps gun down the target of 302 in 47.1 overs. The likes of Martin Guptill (57), Devon Conway (56), Tom Latham (69) and Daryl Mitchell (63) all smashed vital half-centuries to power New Zealand to a series-clinching victory. All-rounder James Neesham also made a notable contribut??ion, cracking a quickfire 11-ball unbeaten 34 to take the visitors home.

Earlier, West Indies posted a competitive 301/8 on the board in their assigned 50 overs, thanks to scintillating batting by Shai Hope (51), Kyle Mayers (105) and captain Nicholas Pooran (91).

Hope and Mayers stitched ?together a dominating stand of 173 for the opening wicket before the tourists came back and removed both openers in quick succession. The dismissal of both top-order batters opened the flood gates as the hosts kept los??ing wickets at regular intervals. Despite that, Pooran stayed in the middle and ensured West Indies reached a respectable total.

For New Zealand, pacer Trent Boult picked up three wickets for 53 in his quota of 10 overs, including a maiden. However, the star with the ball was Mithcell Santner, who?? conceded only 38 runs in 10 overs and also claimed a couple of scalps.

New Zealand have suffered a big blow ahead of their upcoming ODI series against the West Indies as experienced speedster Matt Henry has been ruled out due to a rib injury. Henry, who has represented Black Caps in 60 ODIs, experienced pain in his left side during practice last week and couldn’t improve after treatment from the medical staff.

New Zealand head coach Gary Stead mentioned that Matt’s injury is not far too serious, but it was decided to send him home in order to keep the fast bowler ready for the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy ODI series against Australia in September.

“It’s a shame for Matt to have to return home at this point of the tour. Although the injury is not overly serious – we felt there was a significant risk it would become worse through playing. Matt is on his way home as we speak and will begin his rehabilitation immediately with an eye to being ready for the ODI series in Australia in early September,” said Stead in a statement.

To replace Matt, the New Zealand Cricket (NZC) have called up Ben Sears, who represents Wellington Firebirds in the domestic arena. Sears, who hasn’t yet played an ODI for New Zealand, made his T20I debut in September 2021 in Bangladesh.

“With the upcoming ODI series starting on Wednesday and consisting of three games over five days, we saw it as prudent to bring in a fully fit replacement. Ben comes fresh from a successful tour with the BLACKCAPS in Europe, and while he is yet to play ODI cricket – we believe he’s ready if called upon. At 24 years old, he’s an exciting young prospect, and we like the pace and skills he possesses,” added Stead.

New Zealand ODI squad (updated):

Kane Williamson (captain), Finn Allen, Trent Boult, Michael Bracewell, Devon Conway, Lockie Ferguson, Martin Guptill, Tom Latham, Daryl Mitchell, Jimmy Neesham,? Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee, Ben Sears.

Cricket West Indies (CWI), on Friday, announced their 14-member squad for the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand, starting August 17 at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown,? Barbados. All three games will be played in Barbados under lights.

With win in t??he 50-overs leg, West Indies will be hoping t??o boost their chances of direct qualification for the 2023 World Cup.

Kevin Sinclair has earned his ODI call-up. The Guyanese all-rounder has played six T20Is but is yet to make his ODI debut. Further, the hosts have also named left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie ????in the squad. However, he will have to undergo a fitness test on his finger.

“As we stated before, we are looking to broaden the pool of players, and we have decided to give Sinclair an opportunity in the CG United ODI Series against New Zealand,” said lead selector Desmond Haynes in a statement.

“He has been in the system for a while and was also in the ‘A Team’ to play against Bangladesh ‘A’ in the upcoming series. We believe with his calm approach and skills, he will do well in the matches against New Zealand. New Zealand is a very good cricketing nation, and this will be a very competitive series. We have confidence in the players selected that they will do very well. This is the last series of the international season at home, and it would be good to end with some solid performances as we continue to build towards the ICC World Cup in India next year,” he added.

West Indies squad for New Zealand ODIs:

Nicholas Pooran (captain), Shai Hope (vice-captain), Shamarh Brooks, Keacy Carty, Shimron Hetmyer, Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Brandon King, Kyle Mayers, Gudakesh Motie (subject to fitness), Keemo Paul, Jayden S?eales, Kevin Sinclair.

New Zealand Cricket (NZC), on Sunday, announced their 15-member squad for the upcoming white-ball tour of West Indies, starting August 10 at Sa??bina Park in Kingston, Jamaica.

Th?e tour will feature three T20Is, and as many ODIs; however, the selectors have named only one combined squad, keeping in mind a busy schedule as all six limited-over fixture?s will take place in 11 days.

Regular skipper Kane Williamson has returned to lead the Black Caps, and along with him, the pace duo of Trent Boult and Tim Southee and batter Devon Conway have all been named in the squad.

Notably, this will be New Zealand’s first trip to the Caribbean since 2014. The T20 matches will come in handy for both sides as a crucial preparation ahead of the T20 World Cup, scheduled to take place in Australia later this year. Similarly, the ODIs are part of the Super League points in the lead-up to the 50-over World Cup in India next year.

“It’s always exciting to be heading somewhere you’ve not been in a while, and I know this group can’t wait for the challenge of taking on the West Indies in the Caribbean..Managing workloads is hugely important this year with the team playing some form of cricket every month in 2022 – and this applies to both players and staff,” said head coach Gary Stead as quoted by NZ Herald.

“For Kane, Trent, Tim and Devon, this will be the first time they have played white ball cricket for New Zealand since last year’s T20 World Cup and tour to India – so this trip will be important for them. We also have players such as Michael and Finn, who are relatively new to the international stage but have really put their hands up for selection when given opportunities. As a selector, it’s been great to see these guys push their cases,” he added.

New Zealand’s Combined squad for West Indies tour:

Kane Williamson (C), Finn Allen, T?rent Boult, Michael Bracewell, Devon Conway, Lockie Ferguson, Martin Guptill, Matt Henry, Tom Latham, Daryl Mitchell, Jimmy Neesham, Glenn Phillips, Mitchel??l Santner, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee.
