As the cricketing world eagerly anticipates the commencement of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 edition, the spotlight is firmly fixed on the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and their iconic leader, MS Dhoni.

The defending champions are set to kick off the tournament against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on March 22 in Chennai, marking the beginning of what? could potentially be a crucial season for the veteran cricketer.

MS Dhoni’s resilience and road to recovery

In the previous season, Dhoni admirably guided CSK to their record-equaling fifth IPL crown. However, the wicketkeeper-batter continued to struggle with hi?s knee throughout the tournament. Following the IPL 2023 final, Dhoni opted for kne??e surgery, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to his recovery. Through dedicated efforts, he successfully regained fitness in time for the upcoming IPL 2024 season.

Internal talks and speculation surrounding Dhoni’s future

Leading CSK’s training sessions at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium these days, the venue for the IPL 2024 season opener, Dhoni embodied the spirit of resilience that has become synonymous with his illustrious career. While the Super Kings set their sights on defending their title, a cloud of speculation looms regarding Dhoni’s future plans and the potential identification of his successor as captain.

N. Srinivasan’s decision

In a conversation with former CSK batter S Badrinath on his YouTube channel, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has shed light on the team’s internal discussions about a succession plan, acknowledging the possibility that the forthcoming season might be Dhoni’s last. According to Viswanathan, team owner N Srinivasan has taken a hands-off approach, leaving the decision on Dhoni’s successor to the captain and coach.

“See, there have been internal talks. But, Mr. Srinivasan has made it very clear. Let’s not talk about captain and vice-captain appointments. Let’s leave it to the coach and the captain to decide. Let them decide and convey the information to me, and then I will convey it to you all. He has said that ‘the captain and the coach will decide and give us a directive, till then let’s all keep quiet,” Viswanathan said.

Dhoni’s request

Viswanathan highlighted the hope within the CSK camp for another strong showing in IPL 2024. Nevertheless, he emphasized that Dhoni has urged the team to focus on the league stage at present, signaling the captain’s intent to keep the squad grounded amidst the anticipation and speculation surrounding his potential retirement.

“We have always focused on qualifying for the knockouts. That’s our first aim. After that, it depends on the performance on that day. We are following that even now. Before every season, MS Dhoni tells us ‘first let us concentrate on league games’. We will look to qualify for the knockouts. Yes, the pressure is there. But over the years, because of our consistency, most of the players are used to this pressure,” Viswanathan concluded.

The surreal bond between MS Dhoni and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has reached to an extent where it is totally unimaginable to even think about? one without mentioning the other.

CSK roped Dhoni right in the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), and even after a decade, the franchise is reaping r?ich rewards for their decision.

The Ranchi-born has led the Super Kings to three championship titles, second only to Mumbai Indians (MI).

Further, CSK is the only franchise to have reached the knock-out rounds of the tournament in every season they have playe??d so far.

But not many pe??ople know that if not for a specific regul??ation, MI would have acquired him in 2008 itself.

N Srinivasan narrates an interesting story about Dhoni’s acquisition

In a recent interview to PTI, N Srinivasan revealed the nitty-gritty of what transpired in the 2008 auctions? and how his franchise ensured that Dhoni goes nowhere else.

In the very first auction ahead of IPL 2008, ?there ??was a rule which stated that big names like Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and others will be playing for the respective home franchise.

So Sachin went to MI, Ganguly was acquired by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Virender Sehwag plied his trade for the then Delhi Daredevils. But, Dhoni didn’t have any home franchise, so there were no restrictions on him.

“It is a question of arithmetic, at that time Mr Bindra was there, Punjab wanted Yuvraj to play for them, Delhi wanted (Virender) Sehwag to play for then, Mumbai could not imagine a team without Sachin Tendulkar, how could Sachin play for somebody else,” N Srinivasan said.

“Therefore, all them said they wanted icons, they had to pay the icon 10 per cent than the highest-paid player of the team in the auction. So when the bidding went on for Dhoni, I was clear at any price MS Dhoni,” he added.

Since franchises were restricted to spend within USD 5 million and Mumbai Indians (MI) already spent USD 1.6 million on Tendulkar, they couldn’t afford another million on Dhoni.

“When it came to USD 1.5 million, I think they realised they would have to pay Sachin USD 1.65 million and Dhoni USD 1.5 million, five million was the purse and sixty per cent of the purse would go to these two players. So they stopped and that’s how we got Dhoni because I said I don’t want an icon,” concluded Srinivasan.

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has been in headlines from the past few weeks. First, their 13 members,?? including two Indian players, tested positive for COVID-19. Then, veteran batsman Suresh Raina decided to leave the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 citing personal reasons.

As if this was not enough, Super Kings owner N Srinivasan dropped critical comments on Raina, stating that the southpaw is ‘prima donna’ and fame has gone into his head. But soon, Srinivasan cleared that his statement on Raina was taken out of context.

“I have treated him like one (son). The reason for CSK’s success in IPL over the years is because the franchise never poked its nose into cricketing matters. India Cements is running cricket since the ’60s. I will always remain like that,” said Srinivasan as quoted by My Khel.

On Wednesday (September 02), even Raina came out to defend his IPL team’s boss. The 33-year-old said that Srinivasan is like a father-figure to him and can scold his ‘son’.

“He is like a father figure to me, and he’s always stood by me and is close to my heart. He treats me like his younger son and I am sure a lot of what he said was taken out of context. Ek baap apne bacche ko daant sakta hai (A father can scold his son),” Raina had said as quoted by Cricbuzz.

Dhoni will determine Raina’s future in CSK: Srinivasan

Srinivasan also made it clear that he owns the team but not the players, so the se??lection of specific individuals in the side i?s not in his hand.

The former ICC chairman further said that picking players is not his cup of tea since they have the greatest captain, MS Dhoni, in the group.

“Look, please understand, that’s not my domain (whether Raina will come back or not) at all. We own a team, we own the franchise, but we do not own players. The team is ours, but the players are not. I don’t own the players; I am not the cricket captain. I have never told them (team management) whom to play, whom to take in the auction, never. We have the greatest captain of all time. So, why shall I even interfere in cricketing matters?” Srinivasan added.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) talismanic batsman Suresh Raina has broken silence over his IPL team owner N Srinivasan’s controversial statement.

When Raina flew back to India from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) citing personal reasons, Srinivasan had termed the southpaw as ‘prima donna’ – a negative term for a person who is hugely self-centred and temperamental.

Srinivasan had also stated that sometimes success gets into cricketers head. But, soon he cleared the air on his comments, claiming they were blown out of context. The CSK boss went on to say that the Chennai team will always stand by Raina.

Now, the former India international has also reacted to Srinivasan’s remarks. While speaking to Cricbuzz, Raina revealed that he respects the CSK owner a lot. The 33-year-old regarded Srinivasan as his father figure.

“He is like a father figure to me, and he’s always stood by me and is close to my heart. He treats me like his younger son and am sure a lot of what he said was taken out of context. Ek baap apne bacche ko daant sakta hai(A father can scold his son),” said Raina.

Raina further defended Srinivasan by saying that the latter wasn’t aware of the real situation. The Muradnagar-born said he has had a chat with Srinivasan and the issue was clarified.

“He didn’t know the real reasons for me leaving when he gave those comments. Now he’s been informed about them, and he even sent me a message thereafter. We’ve chatted about it, and both CSK and I just want to get over with it,” Raina added further.

Raina opens up about his future with CSK

Raina was even asked about his future with the ‘Yellow Army’. The CSK veteran responded to the question and said: “I’ve been training even while quarantining here. You never know you might see me in the camp there again.”

Raina is the most capped player in IPL, having played as many as 193 games. The explosive left-handed batsman is the second-highest run-scorer (536?8) in t??he lucrative league, just behind Virat Kohli (5412).

Former BCCI president and current Chennai Super Kings owner N Srinivasan has clarified his ‘prima donna’ comment on star batsman Suresh Raina which the former opined was ‘taken out of context’.

On Saturday (August 29), Raina returned home from Dubai, hence making himself unavailable for the whole IPL 2020 citing ‘personal reasons’. There were several media reports that Raina made a sudden exit from the tournament due to an attack on his relatives in Pathankot. Meanwhile, PTI reported that the latest COVID-19 outbreak in the CSK camp might have been the reason.

But on Sunday, the Outlook magazine was reported saying that a hotel room rift was the reason, after which even MS Dhoni failed to pacify his deputy, and Srinivasan was left shell-shocked over Raina’s departure.

Clarifying his remarks, Srinivasan, while speaking to TOI, said: “His (Raina’s) contribution to the CSK franchise has been phenomenal through the years.”

He is also of the firm view that “it is important to understand what Suresh is going through right now and give him space”.

Srinivasan lavish praises on Raina

Raina has been a crucial member for the Super Kings in their 10 years of IPL history where they won three titles.

Raina, who is the leading run-scorer for the franchise, has amassed 5368 runs in 189 innings with 38 half-centuries and a ton at a phenomenal strike rate of 137.14. In fact, the southpaw also happens to be the most capped player in IPL with 193 matches, three ahead of Dhoni, and all predominantly for CSK – barring the two years he played for the Gujarat Lions.

Praising Rain’s contribution as a player, Srinivasan further said: “The franchise will always stand by him and he has our complete support during these times of distress.”

The CSK boss then clarified his “prima donna” comment saying, “These boys, they’re family. They’ve been family for over a decade now. When I said ‘cricketers are like prima donnas’, it wasn’t in a negative sense. A prima donna is a lead singer in an opera. Similarly, cricketers are always at the forefront of an exercise like this.”

On 15th August, Suresh Raina fans received a major disappointment as ??he announced his retirement from international cricket.

Fans would have been heartened to see the champion batsman in full-flow during the 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

However, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), over the weekend, received a significant blow to their campaign with the departure of Raina.

There has been a lot of mystery surrounding Raina’s abrupt exit from the tournament. On Sunday, CSK owner N Srinivasan came up with a surprising statement regarding Raina’s ‘Prima Donna’ attitude.

Moreover, Srinivasan ensured that CSK captain MS Dhoni is not perturbed with Raina’s pulling out of the tournament.

Now, former Indian leg-spinner Laxman Sivaramakrishnan has named the replacement of Raina for the upcoming tournament.

In T20s, most teams employ leg-spinners to trouble the right-handers. But then, a left-hander could negotiate with leggies easily. So the loss of such an established batsman like Raina would hurt CSK,” Sivaramakrishnan told the Times of India.

“But they have a utility player in Curran and could send the southpaw up the order. He can bat at No. 3 and give CSK those useful runs,” he added.

After a decent stint with Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), the CSK franchise managed to bag the services of Sam Curran at a whopping price of INR 5.5 crores.

Over the years, we have also seen Dhoni preferring left-arm pacers. Curran can come in handy since he can swing the ball in the air and is a very enthusiastic fielder,” the cricket-turned-commentator concluded.

Curran, for KXIP, went on to pick ten wickets and scored 95 runs, with the highest score of 55*. He also clinched a hat-trick during one of his outings for the Preity Zinta co-owned franchise.

Earlier, CSK players – Deepak Chahar and Ruturaj Gaekwadwere diagnosed as coronavirus positive.

As a result, the quarantine period of CSK has now been extended until 6th September.

Ever since arriving in the foreign land of the UAE, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has been enduring a rough couple of weeks, ahead of the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020.

Firstly, around 13 members of the contingent, including a couple of players, have contracted the novel coronavirus. And now, the rest of the squad can’t hit the ground for training since their quarantine period has been extended until September 06.

If this wasn’t enough, their vice-captain Suresh Raina flew back to India over some disagreements with the team management. This was a double whammy for the ‘Yellow Army’.

CSK owner and former BCCI President N Srinivasan is, however, unfazed with the whole saga as he believes MS Dhoni will make everything alright.

“I spoke to MS (Dhoni) and he has assured me that even if the numbers go up, there was nothing to worry about. He spoke to the players through a zoom call and asked them to remain safe. You really don’t know who is a passive carrier. I have got a solid captain. Dhoni is simply unfazed by anything. That is giving everyone in the team a lot of confidence,” Srinivasan was quoted as saying by Outlook.

‘Sometimes success gets into your head’: Srinivasan on Raina

Srinivasan further talked about Raina’s sudden withdrawal from the tournamen?t and also compared the latter to self-centred actors from olden days.

“Cricketers are like prima donnas … like the temperamental actors of the olden days. Chennai Super Kings have always been like a family and all seniors players have learnt to co-exist. My thinking is that if you are reluctant or not happy, go back. I don’t force anyone to do anything … sometimes success gets into your head,” concluded the 75-year-old.

Meanwhile, the 13th seaso??n of the cash-rich league is schedul?ed to commence from September 19. The complete fixture is not yet revealed by the apex cricketing body.

Chennai Super Kings star batsman Suresh Raina on Saturday (August 29) decided to pull out of IPL 2020 and flew back to India citing personal reasons.

Reacting to Raina’s call, CSK owner and former BCCI President N Srinivasan on Sunday said that the southpaw will regret his decision and would want to come back.

“The season has not begun yet and Raina will certainly realise what he is missing and certainly all the money he is going to lose,” Srinivasan said, speaking to the Outloo??k magazine.

Srinivasan’s strict comments came after Raina’s sudden decision to give the IPL ‘a miss’ shook the already rattled CSK – due to two of their players and eleven other staff members testing positive for novel coronavirus – ahead of the 13th edition of IPL which is scheduled to take place in the UAE from September 19.

Srinivasan said if someone was unhappy, then he won’t force anyone to stay back.

“My thinking is that if you are reluctant or not happy, go back. I don’t force anyone to do anything… sometimes success gets into your head,” he further said.

Rift over a hotel room

The report added that Raina was miffed with the hotel room he got from the Super Kings management in Dubai ever since he landed with the squad on August 21. Raina’s room reportedly did not have proper balconies which made him feel claustrophobic in the strict bio-secure environment.

33-year-old Raina, who announ?ced his retirement from international cricket minutes after MS Dhoni on August 15, wanted a similar room like CSK? skipper.

“Cricketers are like prima donnas … like the temperamental actors of the olden days. Chennai Super Kings have always been like a family and all seniors players have learned to co-exist,” said Srinivasan.

Earlier – on Saturday morning – CSK’s official Twitter handle had announced Raina’s departure from UAE while saying ‘CSK offers complete support to Suresh and his family during this time’.

Raina has been part of the Super Kings set-up since the inception of the IPL in 2008 and is the franchise’s highest run-getter and a key figure in the team reaching multiple finals and winning the title twice.

In 2018, CSK retained three players before assembling the rest of the squad at the layer auction. Dhoni was the first player retained at INR 15 crore, Raina was the second at INR 11 crore and Ravindra Jadeja was the third at INR 7 crore.
