AB de Villiers may have retired from international cricket. Still, he managed to pull off one of his fantastic shots during a T20 encounter between Nelson Mandela Bay Giants and Tshwane Spartans in the ongoing Mzansi Super League (MSL).

Playing for the Spartans, de Villiers was their highest scorer, with 63 runs off 38 balls. During his knock, the 35-year-old batsman scored freely around the ground. It is worth mentioning that his best shot came in the same over in which he got out.

On the third delivery of the 18th over, de Villiers went down on one knee to play a reverse sweep off Giants’ speedster Junior Dala. Having hit the ball precisely over the wicket-keeper’s head, ABD got four deserving runs for his innovative shot.

De Villiers’ fiery innings guided the Spartans to a score of 188 in their stipulated 20 overs. However, the Giants opener Ben Dunk took his team over the finish line with an unbeaten 99 runs off 54 balls.

During the 22nd match of the ongoing Mzansi Super League (MSL), Cape Town Blitz fast bowler Dale Steyn got involved in a hilarious confrontation with Tshwane Spartans batsman AB de Villiers.

It all happened in the 14th over of the Spartans’ run-chase. Steyn bowled a full-toss to de Villiers, which he tried to smash out of the park but couldn’t time the ball and ended up hitting it straight back to the bowler. De Villiers immediately put his hand up in apology, after which Steyn decided to have some fun with him.

The Proteas pacer hit the stumps while De Villiers had come out of the crease to give him the ball. After that, Steyn raised his finger jokingly, and ABD put the stumps back in place. The packed audience present in Cape Town had a good laugh about the light-hearted incident. Even the commentator narrated about the camaraderie shared by the two veteran South African cricketers.

However, the happy moment didn’t last long for De Villiers. Four balls later, he gave a simple caught and bowled chance to Steyn, who picked up three wickets, giving away ten runs in his four overs. Mr 360 could manage only 31 runs off 26 balls with the help of one four and two sixes. The Blitz went on to win the match by 15 runs and also halted the Spartans’ unbeaten streak in the MSL 2019.

During the fifteenth match o the ongoing Mzansi Super League (MSL) in Cape Town, Paarl Rocks wrist-spinner Tabraiz Shamsi put on display yet another innovative celebration to entertain the fans.

It all happened on the fourth delivery of the 11th over when Cape Town Blitz batsman Asif Ali’s attempt to smash a Shami delivery out of the park saw him walking back to the pavilion. Ali hit a full delivery from Shamsi towards the long-on region but was caught by Paarl Rocks captain Faf du Plessis well inside the boundary.

Usually known for his out-of-the-box celebrations, Shamsi followed his ‘shoe celebration’ by blowing a kiss to his wife sitting in the stands.

Though Shamsi’s wife looked surprised at first, later, she responded to her husband in the same manner.

Chasing 164 to win, the Blitz were restricted to 161/9 in 20 overs as Rocks pacer Isuru Udana defended 11 runs in the last over.

During the eighth match of the ongoing season of the Mzansi Super League (MSL) in Johannesburg, Nelson Mandela Bay Giants speedster Junior Dala bowled a pin-point yorker to dismiss Jozi Stars opener, Chris Gayle.

It all happened on the penultimate ball of the fourth over while Gayle was batting on 11 as he was outfoxed by a fast, unplayable delivery from the 29-year old Dala. It is not often that bowlers have succeeded in dismissing the West Indies southpaw in that fashion.

Meanwhile, Gayle’s stumps flying in the air was an icing on the cake for the Giants’ fast bowler.

Gayle has been far from best in the MSL so far with just 46 runs in four games for his side. The explosive left-hander has been struggling with his form and will be hoping to regain some momentum to win games for Jozi Stars in the tournament.

Cape Town Blitz’s ambidextrous spinner Gregory Mahlokwana became an Internet sensation after he picked up a wicket with each hand during a Mzansi Super League (MSL) clash against Durban Heat.

Mahlokwana first dismissed opener Sarel Erwee while bowling with his right arm in the eighth over of the second innings.

In his next over, Mahlokwana bowled with his left arm and uprooted the stumps of the opposition skipper Dane Vilas.

Mahlokawa made his debut for Titans in the 2018-19 season and played in the CSA T20 Challenge and One-Day Cup.

His Titans’ head coach Mark Boucher praised Mahlokawa’s abilities and had said, “He uses both his armsâ€?which is a rarity’ and he is something special. In the pastâ€?the Titans have produced international players but we have not produced enough young players and he is one of the few young players who will be given a chance to prove themselves. We are excited about him and he is something of a secret weapon.”

During the ninth game of the ongoing second edition of the Mzansi Super League (MSL) between Durban Heat and Cape Town Blitz in Durban, the Blitz skipper Quinton de Kock imitated India veteran MS Dhoni to dismiss the Heat’s all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo.

It happened on the last ball of the 18th over when Phehlukwayo hit a Sisanda Migala delivery towards Marques Ackerman at long-off. Though Ackerman couldn’t hold on to a tough catching opportunity, he was quick to get back on his feet and throw the ball at the striker’s end.

As Heat needed 28 runs to win off just 13 balls, the batsmen thought of taking a couple of runs. In the process, Phehlukwayo, who was running back to his crease, was undone by de Kock’s street-smart keeping skills.

Like Dhoni, De Kock also deflected the ball on to the stumps, bamboozling the batsman and finally running him out.

Coming in to bat at number 5 in the 17th over, Phehlukwayo ended up scoring 5 (4) as the hosts lost the match by 10 runs after scoring 164/7 in their stipulated 20 overs.

AB de Villiers has been appointed as captain of the Tshwane Spartans for the first edition of the Mzansi Super League which starts on November 16 in Cape Town.

The 34-year old De Villierswho has featured in the Indian Premier League (IPL) since its beginningcomes with lots of experience into the MSL as he has played in 251 T20 matches till date and has scored 6649 runs with an average of 35.36.

“It’s a huge honour to captain this team in the first Mzansi Super Leagueâ€?#8221; he said ahead of the tournament opener against Cape Town Blitz at Newlands on Friday.

“I am really excited to work with this group of players because there’s a lot of talentâ€?with a great balance between youth and experience.

“Even though we are missing out on a few players that aren’t available yetâ€?we still have a fantastic balance in the side.

“There’s good skill right throughâ€?with batting depth all the way down to number nineâ€?which isn’t normally the case with T20 cricket.

“I am excited about our bowlers as well.

“There’s lots of experience with a number of guys who have done this day in and day out and a couple of wrist spinnersâ€?with the option to go right or left-arm orthodoxâ€?so there are lots of variations.”

The former South Africa skipper said he would draw on his vast previous during the tournament.

“I try to lead from the front and rely on the experience I have picked up over the yearsâ€?#8221; he said.

“I believe I am a decent man-manager when it comes to understanding players’ strengths and weaknesses. I am looking forward to this exciting challenge.”

In May this year, De Villiers had announced his retirement from the international cricket. He is considered to be one of the greatest batsmen of all-time, having appeared in 114 Tests, 228 ODIs and 78 T20I for the Proteas side.

He finished his career with an incredible 20,014 international runs, including 8,765 in Tests, 9,577 in ODIs and 1,672 in T20Is.
