For most cricket fans, Mahendra Singh Dhoni is the epitome of composure ?“Captain Cool?with nerves of steel and a knack for finishing matches with calm precision. But behind this composed demeanour lies a childhood shaped by discipline, routine, and a deep-seated respect ?even fear ?for a strict, regimented father. In a recent heart-to-heart conversation on a podcast hosted by Raj Shamani, Dhoni took listeners down memory lane, revisiting his early years in Ranchi and sharing the emotional undercurrents of growing up under the watchful eye of his father, Pan Singh.

While Dhoni’s on-field brilliance for Chennai Super Kings continues to win hearts in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season, it is his off-field revelations that have left fans even more enamoured with the man behind the myth.

A regimental childhood: Where every day began at dawn

Dhoni painted a picture of a childhood far removed from the distractions and chaos of today’s digital age. ?em>There were no mobile phones, no show-offs, and no insecurity,?he said, describing a routine that began at 5:30 in the morning and rarely wavered from its structure.

The school, located within the colony where the Dhoni family lived, played a key role in maintaining this rhythm. It wasn’t just education ?it was an extension of home, with teachers who had once taught his elder brother and who were well-acquainted with the family’s values. ?em>There was no chance of badmasshi,?Dhoni quipped. His voice was laced with nostalgia, perhaps even gratitude, for the simplicity and consistency of those early days.

MS Dhoni’s respectful fear for his father

The standout moment from the podcast was Dhoni’s candid admission where he revealed “Papa se dar bohot lagta tha?/em> (I used to be really scared of my father). It wasn’t fear rooted in punishment or anger —Dhoni’s father wasn’t the kind of man to raise his hand. Instead, it was the aura of discipline, of unspoken expectations and quiet authority that left a lasting impression.

?em>He was very strict,He was regimented; always supposed to be on time. That’s why I’m like that today,?Dhoni expressed. The influence is obvious in Dhoni’s approach to the game, where preparation, timing, and discipline have been hallmarks of his captaincy and personal conduct.

Even mischievous childhood adventures were curbed by this respect. While other kids scaled the colony walls, Dhoni never dared. ?em>If my father sees, then we are gone!?he recalled with a smile. The consequences were never defined, but the fear ?and the respect ?were real and enduring.

Learning life from the playground

Despite the stringent atmosphere at home, Dhoni found his joy in the playground. The only real competition he remembers from his childhood came from the cricket games in his colony. ?em>If you lost one day, you had to win the next,?he stated. The simplicity of those battles sowed the seeds of sportsmanship, persistence, and strategy ?the very qualities that would make him a legendary finisher in world cricket.

What’s most striking is Dhoni’s humility. Even as fans celebrate his clutch performances and match-winning sixes, he admited, ?em>If we win the match without any drama and I don’t get to bat, I’m happy. I just want India to win.?It’s this selflessness, likely rooted in his upbringing, that sets him apart in a world obsessed with individual accolades.

Legacy of a father

The podcast episode revealed a lesser-known, more personal side of Dhoni ?a side not captured in post-match interviews or highlight reels. It was a tribute, not just to the man he became, but to the man who helped shape him.

His father’s quiet discipline and structured lifestyle laid the foundation for Dhoni’s own values. That early fear, laced with admiration, became a guiding light. In today’s world, where chaos often rules, it’s heartening to see how values passed down in a modest household in Ranchi continue to define a global cricket icon.

Former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) icon and current commentator Matthew Hayden didn’t hold back while evaluating MS Dhoni’s performance during CSK’s loss to Delhi Capitals (DC) at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.

Matthew Hayden’s harsh assessment of CSK legend MS Dhoni

Dhoni, who came in to bat at No.7, played an uncharacteristically slow knock – remaining unbeaten on 30 off 26 balls. The innings included just one boundary and a solitary six, and although he managed to build an 84-run stand with Vijay Shankar for the sixth wicket, CSK still fell significantly short of the 192-run target. This marked CSK’s third loss in just four matches this season, raising concerns about the team’s middle-order depth and Dhoni’s role in the side. While the partnership provided some resistance, the lack of urgency in Dhoni’s batting meant the required rate spiraled beyond reach by the time the final overs arrived.

Dhoni’s inability to accelerate in the crucial middle and death overs raised serious concerns about his role in the current side. Hayden, who was on commentary duty during the match, was candid in his critique, suggesting that the time has come for Dhoni to walk away from the game.

“MS Dhoni should join us in the commentary box after this game. He has lost the cricket. It’s over for him. He should accept this fact before it becomes too late for CSK,” Hayden said.

A glorious legacy at risk? Dhoni’s numbers still command respect

Despite his current struggles, Dhoni remains one of the most decorated players in IPL history. With 5,289 runs to his name, he is the sixth-highest run-scorer in the tournament. His career average stands at an impressive 39.17 with a strike rate of over 137, complemented by 24 half-centuries and a highest score of 84. However, Dhoni’s current IPL 2025 numbers paint a different picture. His scores in the season so far- 0 not out, 30 not out, 16, and 30 not out – indicate an inability to accelerate during crunch moments, something that was once his trademark. His legendary status remains intact, but his declining on-field impact has sparked widespread debate.

The buzz around MS Dhoni’s potential retirement intensified on Saturday as his parents, Pan Singh and Devaki Devi, were spotted at Chepauk Stadium during Chennai Super Kings?(CSK) clash against Delhi Capitals (DC). The sighting reignited speculation among fans and analysts, and sparked fresh speculation about whether the veteran is playing his final season in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Parents?presence sparks retirement talks

The appearance of Dhoni’s parents in the stands during the match added fuel to the ongoing retirement rumours surrounding the 43-year-old cricketing icon. With Chennai suffering their third consecutive defeat, questions about Dhoni’s role and longevity in the game have taken centre stage. Fans and pundits alike interpreted the rare presence of his family as a possible hint at an impending announcement, though no official word has emerged from the Dhoni camp.

Spehen Fleming opens up on MS Dhoni’s retirement rumours

At the post-match press conference, CSK head coach Stephen Fleming was asked if there was any update on Dhoni’s future plans. The former New Zealand skipper responded with admiration and a touch of humor. Fleming dismissed the idea of putting an end to the retirement chatter.

“No, it’s not my job to end his journey. I have no idea. I’m just enjoying working with him. He’s still going strong. I don’t even ask these days. You guys are the ones who ask about it,” said Fleming in the press conference.

Dhoni’s struggles in the spotlight

On the field, Dhoni’s performance against Delhi Capitals did little to silence his critics. Batting at number seven, a shift from his controversial number nine position earlier in the season, Dhoni scored an unbeaten 30 off 26 balls. However, his effort couldn’t prevent CSK from slipping to yet another loss.

The decision to demote him in the batting order earlier this season had drawn heavy criticism, and Saturday’s innings showed glimpses of intent but lacked the fluency fans have come to expect. Fleming, however, defended Dhoni’s contribution under challenging circumstances, highlighting the tricky nature of the Chepauk pitch during the middle overs.

“He showed passion. When he came to the crease, I think the ball was coming a bit slow. He did really well considering the conditions. Vijay Shankar struggled to get the timing during his innings. But that period of 12 to 16 overs was difficult for everyone. It was definitely difficult to play there. So despite trying, the match was slipping out of our hands,” added Fleming.

In what turned out to be a disappointing evening for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the five-time champions succumbed to a 25-run defeat against Delhi Capitals (DC) at their fortress, the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk. Chasing a target of 184, CSK faltered early, losing half their side for just 74 runs, and despite steady but uncharacteristically slow innings from their legendary finisher, the hosts failed to get across the line.

MS Dhoni’s laboured knock creates an unwanted IPL feat

MS Dhoni, revered for his composed and calculated chases, walked out to bat in the 11th over with CSK in deep trouble. Despite the pressure situation, Dhoni looked unusually tentative in his approach. He ended the innings unbeaten on 30 off 26 deliveries, but what stood out was his sluggish start – taking 19 balls to hit his first boundary. That six, launched off Mukesh Kumar in the 18th over, was Dhoni’s first sign of aggression in the innings. Before that moment, he had scored 14 runs off 18 balls without a single boundary. This slow start etched an unwanted record in Dhoni’s long IPL career – he became the batter to take the most balls (19) to hit his first boundary in an inning of 30 or more runs during IPL 2025.

Efforts in vain against DC as CSK slump further

Although Dhoni stitched a valuable partnership of 84 runs off 57 balls with Vijay Shankar – who remained unbeaten on a scratchy 69 from 54 balls—the required run rate kept climbing. Despite their unbeaten sixth-wicket stand, the duo couldn’t keep pace with the increasing demand of the chase. Dhoni’s inability to rotate strike at the start and find boundaries when required played a crucial role in CSK falling short.

Dhoni’s slow start and cautious approach mirrored the overall lackluster performance of CSK’s middle order. With his entire family—including his parents—present in the stands, the veteran would have hoped to guide his team to a memorable win. However, he could only finish the innings with a four and a six, ending on 30 not out off 26, and watching helplessly as his team was restricted to 158/5 in their 20 overs.

Earlier, DC posted a formidable total of 183/6 in 20 overs, thanks to a blistering 77-run knock from KL Rahul. The CSK bowlers, despite early breakthroughs, couldn’t stop the flow of runs at the back end. Their fielding too was far from ideal, adding further pressure. This loss marked CSK’s third defeat in their first four matches of IPL 2025. Their batting line-up, once feared for its depth and finishing prowess, seems to be faltering under pressure. Dhoni, although showing resilience, hasn’t been able to provide the big finishes his team relies on. In his four innings this season, he has scored 76 runs, but the lack of acceleration during crunch moments is a growing concern.

MS Dhoni has long been a symbol of calm, experience, and unmatched leadership in the Indian Premier League. But as the 2025 season unfolds, conversations around his potential retirement are once again gaining traction. Former South African cricketer Herschelle Gibbs recently added fuel to the debate with a straightforward take on Dhoni’s IPL future.

Herschelle Gibbs explains why MS Dhoni should opt for retirement

Responding to a fan’s question on X (formerly Twitter), Gibbs was asked, “Your honest take on Dhoni’s IPL retirement… Is it the right time to call his time?”

The former Proteas batter didn’t hesitate and replied: “Yes mate, he doesn’t play enough other cricket to maintain fitness and scoring runs most importantly.”

Gibbs?comment reflects a concern many cricket analysts have voiced ?Dhoni’s limited cricketing activity outside the IPL could be hampering his match fitness and batting rhythm. The 42-year-old legend hasn’t participated in any form of domestic or international cricket outside the IPL since his international retirement in August 2020.

Dhoni still a fan-favourite despite limited role

Despite the fitness concerns, Dhoni remains a central figure for Chennai Super Kings. His tactical brain, and electric presence behind the stumps continue to energize the team and fans alike. Even in a limited batting role, his presence in the dressing room is considered invaluable.

The 2025 season has seen glimpses of vintage Dhoni ?quick glove work, shrewd bowling changes, and of course, the occasional big hit. However, his fitness and mobility, especially while running between the wickets or moving sideways behind the stumps, have often been under scrutiny.

A question only Dhoni can answer

While opinions from experts like Gibbs make headlines, the final decision rests with Dhoni himself. Known for his self-awareness and timing, fans trust that when Dhoni does choose to walk away from the IPL, it will be on his own terms ?just like he has always done throughout his illustrious career.

In a thrilling encounter between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Delhi Capitals (DC) in Match 17 of IPL 2025, the iconic duo of MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja delivered a breathtaking moment in the final over that left fans in awe. The electrifying piece of fielding saw Ashutosh Sharma run out in dramatic fashion, showcasing the unmatched synergy and sharp reflexes of two of India’s most celebrated cricketers.

A sensational run-out by MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja

It was the third ball of the 20th over in DC’s innings, bowled by Matheesha Pathirana. Ashutosh, looking to push for a second run, nudged the ball with a thick inside edge towards deep square leg. But what followed was a classic Jadeja-Dhoni masterclass. Jadeja sprinted in, picked up the ball in one swift motion and fired a flat throw straight next to the stumps. Dhoni, ever alert behind the wickets, whipped the bails off in a flash. Ashutosh dived full stretch but was caught short, his desperate attempt to complete the second run falling just inches short of the crease.

This moment underlined the enduring brilliance of the Dhoni-Jadeja partnership. Even in the twilight of their careers, the duo continues to produce moments of magic that turn the tide in CSK’s favour. Fans on social media were quick to flood timelines with admiration, praising the veterans for their alertness, precision, and game awareness.

KL Rahul anchors DC innings

Earlier, KL Rahul led the charge for Delhi with a composed 77 off 51 deliveries, including six boundaries and three sixes. Despite Rahul’s knock, CSK bowlers, led by Khaleel Ahmed (2/25), managed to keep the scoring in check and restrict DC to a competitive yet gettable total. As CSK began their chase, momentum from that sensational run-out provided the perfect boost, setting the stage for a gripping finish.

In what turned out to be a heartwarming and emotional evening for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) supporters, MS Dhoni’s parents, Pan Singh and Devika Devi, made a rare appearance at the MA Chidambaram Stadium during CSK’s IPL 2025 clash against Delhi Capitals (DC) on Saturday. Joining them in the stands were Dhoni’s wife Sakshi and daughter Ziva, further igniting speculation about the iconic cricketer’s future in the IPL.

The occasion marked the first-ever visit by Dhoni’s parents to watch him play an IPL match in Chennai, a city that has embraced him as one of its own since he first donned the CSK jersey in 2008. The sight of Dhoni’s entire family present at Chepauk sent fans into an emotional frenzy, with many wondering whether the presence of his loved ones signaled a potential farewell tour for the legendary captain.

Fans flood social media with pictures and videos of MS Dhoni’s family

As images and videos of Dhoni’s family circulated online, social media platforms were flooded with emotional tributes and messages of gratitude.

At 43, Dhoni remains a pillar of the CSK setup, having played over 260 IPL matches and scoring upwards of 5,000 runs. Though he handed over the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of IPL 2024, his leadership presence continues to guide the squad. However, a recent decision to bat at No. 9 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) raised eyebrows and fuelled retirement rumours further.

Stephen Fleming opens up on Dhoni’s fitness

Speaking to the media, CSK head coach Stephen Fleming addressed Dhoni’s evolving role, particularly amid concerns over his physical condition. “His knees aren’t the same anymore,?/em> Fleming admitted. “He evaluates what he can contribute each match. His impact is now more tactical and strategic than purely physical.?/em>

Despite the limitations, Dhoni continues to be the biggest draw in the IPL, with fans turning up in large numbers just to catch a glimpse of the former India skipper. His unmatched legacy, calm demeanor and cricketing acumen remain central to CSK’s identity.

Chris Gayle, often referred to as the “Universe Boss,” is one of the most iconic players in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Known for his explosive batting, charismatic personality, and ability to entertain crowds, Gayle has left an indelible mark on the tournament. From his record-breaking innings to his insightful opinions on Indian cricket, Gayle continues to be a beloved figure in the cricketing world.

Gayle’s name is synonymous with power-hitting, and his 175* against Pune Warriors India in IPL 2013 remains one of the most memorable moments in cricket history. Playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Gayle smashed 17 sixes and 13 fours in a 66-ball carnage that left bowlers and fans alike in awe. This innings not only set the record for the highest individual score in IPL history but also helped RCB post a staggering total of 263/5, which remains the highest team score in the league.

The teams Chris Gayle represented

Throughout his IPL career, Gayle played for three franchises: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), RCB, and Punjab Kings (formerly Kings XI Punjab). While he began his IPL journey with KKR, it was his stint with RCB from 2011 to 2017 that truly defined his legacy. During this period, he formed a formidable partnership with players like Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers, creating unforgettable moments for fans.

Gayle later moved to Punjab Kings, where he continued to entertain crowds with his big-hitting prowess. Across 142 IPL matches, he amassed 4,965 runs at an impressive strike rate of 148.96, including six centuries and 31 half-centuries.

  • Abhishek Sharma: 8
  • KL Rahul: 8

Gayle emphasized Dhoni’s unparalleled value to the league, both as a player and as a leader. He noted that Dhoni’s presence alone energizes fans and inspires teammates.

With Dhoni, you want him to stay as long as possible. Even if he bats at number 11, people just want a glimpse of him,” Gayle remarked. He also praised Dhoni’s sharp wicketkeeping skills and his contributions to Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) success over the years.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has witnessed some of the most dangerous batters in the history of T20 cricket. Over the years, several players have dominated bowlers with their fearless approach and match-winning performances. Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan recently shared his thoughts on two batters he found most difficult to bowl against in the IPL.

Irfan Pathan picks two most dangerous batters in IPL

While speaking on his YouTube channel, Pathan named South African legend AB de Villiers and former Indian captain MS Dhoni as the two most dangerous batters in IPL history.

“I always found it difficult to bowl against AB. He is the most dangerous batsman in the world. Bowling against him was no less than a challenge for me,” Pathan stated.

Pathan highlighted De Villiers’ ability to play all kinds of shots and score runs against even the best deliveries. He added: “AB used to hit all kinds of shots. He was successful in sending the ball across the boundary line even on a good ball. It was very difficult to maintain the length against him.”

De Villiers, who played 184 IPL matches, amassed 5,162 runs at an impressive strike rate. He also registered three centuries in the tournament, making him one of the most destructive batters in IPL history.

The ultimate finisher

Apart from de Villiers, Pathan also named Dhoni as one of the toughest batters to bowl against. Pathan reckoned he has not seen a finisher like the former Indian captain.

“I had not seen a finisher like him. It was difficult for me to bowl against him as well. Mahi used to hit big shots, and you could not escape against him. According to me, these two were the most difficult batsmen for me,” Pathan added further.

Dhoni, known for his calmness and power-hitting abilities, has scored 5,289 runs in 267 IPL matches, including 24 half-centuries. His ability to finish games under pressure has made him a nightmare for bowlers.
