Team India continued their dominance in the third Test against England at Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.

The pair of Ravichandran Ashwin and Axar Patel ran through England batting order and never allowed the visitors to make a comeback in the game. While Axar picked up six wickets for 38 in 21.4 overs, Ashwin bagged three scalps for 26 in 16 overs.

Veteran Indian pacer Ishant Sharma, who is playing his 100th Test, took one wicket as England got bundled out for only 112 runs. Opener Zak Crawley was the only highlight in England’s innings as he scored 53 off 84 balls with 10 boundaries.

Skipper Joe Root with 17 runs was the second-highest scorer for the touring side. He formed a crucial partnership with Crawley for the third wicket. The pair added 47-runs before Ashwin outdid Root in the 22nd over of England’s first innings.

The Tamil Nadu spinner came round the wicket and pitched it a bit full. Root misjudged the length and paid the price by hanging on the back foot. The pink leather struck him on his pads, and umpire Anil Kumar Chaudhary raised his finger. Root then went upstairs, but the ball-tracker agreed with the on-field umpire.

Ashwin on the verge of 400 Test wickets

After taking three scalps in the first innings, Ashwin now has 397 wickets in the longest format. He is on the verge of becoming the second-fastest bowler to complete 400 scalps. If Ashwin can take three or more wickets in the ongoing Test, he will beat Richard Hadlee of New Zealand and Dale Steyn of South Africa.

Steyn and Hadlee had taken 80 Tests to get 400 scalps. If Ashwin enters the 400-wicket club in the Day/Night Test, he will reach the milestone in his 77th match. Legendary Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan is at the top of the list as he took just 72 Tests to pick 400 scalps in Test cricket.

The iconic Sardar Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad is set to host the third Test of the four-match series between India and England. This Day/Night Test will be played with the pink ball at the world’s largest cricketing venue from Wednesday (February 24).

The series is presently poised at 1-1 as both the teams have won one match each. While England registered victory in the first game, India bounced back to win the second Test.

For the upcoming game, pacer Umesh Yadav has joined the team in place of Shardul Thakur. When it comes to the visitors, they will be without the services of Moeen Ali, who has returned home. Jonny Bairstow and Mark Wood have been included in the team.

Pitch report:

The pitch at the Motera stadium is likely to assist the seamers as the pink ball swings a lot initially. Both sides have quality swing bowlers and will look to maximize the initial phase of play.

Head to Head record:

Matches played: 124 | India: 27 | England: 48 | Draw: 49 | Tied: 0

Playing Combination

India

If Shubman Gill is deemed fit, he will continue to open the batting with Rohit Sharma. However, in any other case, KL Rahul might replace him. Jasprit Bumrah is likely to come in the final XI in place of Kuldeep Yadav. Umesh might get a game in the ongoing series.

IND XI: Virat Kohli (c), Shubman Gill/ KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Rishabh Pant (wk), Axar Patel, Ravichandran Ashwin, Umesh Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma.

England

Rory Burns has not been impressive so far in the Test series. He might get replaced by Zak Crawley if he is fit. There could be a toss-up between Bairstow and Daniel Lawrence. James Anderson is likely to return in the final XI along with Dominic Bess.

ENG XI: Joe Root (c), Dominic Sibley, Rory Burns/ Zak Crawley, Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Foakes (wk), Ollie Pope, Dom Bess, Jack Leach/Stuart Broad, Jofra Archer, James Anderson.

Former India international Wasim Jaffer is known for his hilarious and rib-tickling responses on social media. More often than not, he provides a dose of entertainment to fans with his unique and hilarious tweets.

Once again, Jaffer gave a glimpse of his sense of humour after having a look at the pitch of the upcoming third Test between India and England at Sardar Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad.

In the picture tweeted by the official handle of The Cricketer, one could see a lot of green grass on the track. Jaffer responded to the tweet by putting a photo of the character ‘Bauji’ played by actor Kulbhushan Kharbanda in the popular Indian web series ‘Mirzapur’.

The pitch used in the second Test at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai was in the news after a few former England cricketers deemed it unfit for the red-ball format. The pitch at Chepauk offered assistance to the spinners right from Day 1 of the match.

England were unable to reach 200 in both the innings after being bowled out for 134 and 164. As a result, India won the contest to level the series (1-1). It was India’s biggest win against England (in terms of runs) as they defeated the visitors by 317 runs.

Former England cricketers like Michael Vaughan and David Lloyd came down heavily on the Chepauk pitch. However, the likes of Shane Warne were of the opinion that India played much better cricket than England, and the pitch couldn’t be termed poor. Both Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin had scored centuries in the same match.

Just like the second Test, the third match, which is a Day/Night affair starting from Wednesday (February 24), will witness a limited number of fans in the stands. Though Motera stadium has a capacity of 1,10,000, due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) has only allowed 50% of the capacity.

US President Donald Trump is currently in India, where he visited Motera Cricket Stadium – world’s largest cricket stadium – in Ahmedabad on Monday. He also addressed a huge crowd at the Namaste Trump event, which took place at this venue.

Addressing a crowd of more than 100,00 people, Trump took the names of Indian cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar and current captain Virat Kohli in his speech, but he failed to pronounce these names correctly.

“This is the country where the people cheer on some of the world’s greatest cricket players from Sachin Tendulkar to Virat Kohli,” said Trump. However, he pronounced Sachin “Soo-chin” and Kohli as “Virot Kolee.”

Many cricket fans, including some cricketers, raised this issue. Former England player Kevin Pietersen wasn’t impressed with the way Trump pronounced the names of Indian stars, and he reacted on Twitter.

“FFS, @piersmorgan, pls ask your mate to do some research in pronouncing legends names?!,” Pietersen tweeted.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) also took a dig at US President and tweeted a video where it could be seen that they were changing Sachin’s name to Soo-chin Tendulkar in their database.

After a week of speculations, the United States of America President, Donald Trump, finally made it to the rechristened Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad to inaugurate the world’s largest cricketing arena.

He was accompanied by First Lady Melania Trump, along with daughter Ivanka Trump and other delegates from the North American superpower.

Trump, in tandem with Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, addressed the jam-packed audience present in the Motera Stadium with a maximum capacity of 1,10,000 people.

PM Modi also gave fans a sneak peek of what it would look like when International cricket finally resumes in the capital of Gujarat.

The last match played at the old stadium was way back in 2014, when it hosted one of the One-Dayers between India and Sri Lanka.

No matches were played since, to make room for Modi’s vision of building the largest cricket stadium in the world, which finally took shape with the inaugural ceremony on Monday.

One could not help but imagine the atmosphere when the Indian team plays its first match in the presence of a jam-packed stadium in Motera.

Earlier, a match between Asia XI and World XI was scheduled to be played in the revamped stadium but later was moved to the Sher-e-Bangla stadium in Dhaka.

Trump, in his long speech in the afternoon, took the opportunity to speak about the Indo-US ties and the number of deals that would take place in between the countries, in various spheres of development.

Trump spoke about military trade, as well as boosting the economic welfare of our country by increasing foreign investment.
Further, the 45th President of the United States, gave an insight into the scope of development in the field of space exploration, amongst other issues, such as the fight against terrorism.

A day ahead of US President Donald Trump’s visit to Ahmedabad, a makeshift VVIP entry gate outside the newly-built cricket stadium in Motera collapsed due to gusty winds.

The entire incident was recorded by a bystander and was aired on various news channels. The makeshift entry gate was made of welded steel rods and covered in flex banners.

After few minutes, a portion of another makeshift gate structure at the stadium’s main entrance also collapsed due to the windy weather.

“The (VVIP) entry gate collapsed when fabrication work was going on. It was not a major incident. No one was injured in the incident,” Ajay Tomar, the Special Commissioner of Police in Crime Branch, was quoted as saying by NDTV.

As per the schedule, Trump and India’s PM Narendra Modi would soon be addressing a massive crowd comprising over 1 lakh people at the stadium. Ahead of the ‘Namaste Trump’ event, the two eminent personalities will brace the audience after taking part in a roadshow.

The reinforced Motera stadium is also going to garner much attention in the near future as it has been shortlisted to host the Day-Night Test match between India and England next year. The last time when the Three Lions visited India, they were served a 4-0 defeat in the five-match Test series. It will be fascinating to witness how the England squad fares against a dominant Indian side, especially against the Pink ball.

The multi-million project of revamping the Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel Stadium in Motera finally has been completed. The stadium can now hold a capacity of 1,10,000 people, thereby making it the largest cricket stadium in the world.

India played Sri Lanka last in the old Motera stadium in 2014. Since then, no cricketing action has taken place in the stadium where the quarter-final between India and Australia was played in the 2011 World Cup.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), recently, posted a picture of the newly-built stadium, with a picturesque aerial view.

BCCI President Sourav Ganguly was quick to register his emotions after looking at the picture of the stadium from atop.

“Lovely to see such a massive, pretty stadium .. Ahmedabad .. have great memories in this ground as a player, captain ..grew up at Eden with hundred thousand capacity .. (not anymore).. can’t wait to see this on 24th,?Ganguly replied to the post.
The stadium is all set to topple Melbourne Cricket Ground’s capacity of 1,00,000 to become the largest cricketing arena in the world.

It was revamped at an exorbitant amount of 700 crores and is spread across 63 acres of land area, which will house indoor training area, two cricket grounds, with facilities for swimming, hockey, and football.

As per initial media reports, US President Donald Trump was slated to inaugurate the stadium during his visit to Ahmedabad on February 24. However, the chances of him inaugurating the grand stadium look bleak with reports of him not attending the ceremony.

The Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in Melbourne, Australia is currently the largest cricket ground in the world with over a seating capacity of 1 lakh, making it the 10th largest stadium in the world.

It has hosted the 1956 Summer Olympics, the 1992 ICC Cricket World Cup, the 2006 Commonwealth Games, and the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup.

However, from next year, the MCG will have to relinquish its crown as the largest cricket stadium to the newly constructed Sardar Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad, India. The previous stadium was demolished in order to create a theatre-like stadium with a seating capacity more than that of the MCG.

Australian company Populous, architect of the MCG, also happens to be the principal architect of the Sardar Patel Stadium, commonly known as the Motera Stadium

The Sardar Patel Stadium, commonly known as the Motera Stadium is spread across 63 acres of land and has been designed by the same architect company that designed the MCG, Australian company Populous. The new stadium can accommodate approximately 1.1 lakh cricketing fans, which is double the seating capacity of the previous Motera ground and 10,000 more than what MCG currently holds.

According to The Week, apart from these audience seats, the stadium has 76 corporate boxes, four dressing rooms, three practice grounds, indoor practice pitches, training center, and a 55-room clubhouse.

The stadium has been estimated with construction costs of over INR 700 crores and the work is expected to be finalized in January 2020.

Unlike the floodlights in most of the stadiums, the Motera ground will have LED lights all over the venue. Also, there are plans for the first match in this new stadium to be a T20 game between India and World XI.

More than 90 percent of the work at the stadium has been completed.
