Pakistan pacer Mohammad Irfan had last year claimed that he ended former Indian batsman Gautam Gambhir’s white-ball career when Pakistan toured India in 2012. During the series, Irfan had dismissed Gambhir twice. The former Delhi opener played his last T20I for India in that series and never made a comeback in the shortest format of the game for Team India.

Now, Irfan has issued a clarification on his statement while speaking with sports presenter Sawera Pasha on her YouTube channel. During the chat, the 7’1″ bowler recalled how he troubled Gambhir with his bouncer and short balls in the 2012 series.

Irfan revealed that Gambhir was struggling against his nasty bouncers and after the series, the left-handed batsman was dropped from the team. Irfan said that Gambhir’s departure from the team prompted him to make that comment.
“Actually whenever we have India-Pakistan matches, whoever does not perform well he becomes a zero and whoever performs becomes a hero. The way I was bowling to Gautam Gambhir, he was not able to see the ball, the way he was playing my bouncer, everyone was saying that he is not looking like Gautam Gambhir,” said Irfan.

“Because there was so much pressure of my height and my bowling, so I had said from my side that I felt like that because after that he didn’t come back in the team, he was dropped from the team. After that, he played a few matches only and there also he could not perform. So, that was his last tour in 2012 when he played against me. So, that is why I said like that,” he added.

Irfan made his debut for Pakistan with an ODI against England in 2010. He surpri?sed the cricketing fraternity with his impressive height whic??h also made him popular amongst fans and a dangerous customer to deal with for any batsman.

One could understand the impact of Irfan simply by the fact that teams used to train ?by facing throwdowns from a reasonabl?e height in order to prepare against him.

Irfan last played for Pakistan in a T20I against Australia in 2019. So far, he has taken 109 wickets in 4 Tests, 6??0 ODIs and 22 T20??Is in his international career.

Pakistan boasts a rich cricketing heritage, with a proud lineage of?? players who have donned the greens of the country and brought several laurels back home.

Their riva??lry with old-foes India is compared along the lines of Australia and England for the Ashes. When it comes to viewerships, there is no event greater in cricket than that of a clash between India and Pakistan.

Over the years, the country has produced some serious talents, namely, Zaheer Abbar, Javed M??iandad, Abdul Qadir, the dreaded trio of Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, and Imran Khan.

As a matter o??f fact, during the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s, Pa?kistan had the better of India in all formats of the game.

However, their reputation has been tainted repeatedly due to match-fixing and spot-fixing allegations. Thus, bringing down the efforts from legends of the game such as Saeed Anwar, Mohammad Yousuf, Inzamam ul Haq, Shoaib Akhtar, Saqlain Mushtaq and several others.

Today, let’s have a look at the infamous list of players involved in spot or match-fixing:

Umar Akmal

The most recent of fixing case which surfaced from Pakistan is of Umar Akmal. He was one of the most ?talented cricketers in their circuit. However, discipl?inary and fitness issues spiralled his promising career down.

Saleem Malik

Former captain Saleem Malik recently apologized to the Pakistan public for his involvement in match-fixing, after being charged in 2000. Malik was earmarked to be one of the greats for Pakistan batting. However, Malik hasn’t played any cricket since, with PCB overlooking him for the position of the coach.

Salman Butt

Butt, another captain involved in spot-fixing charges, during Pakistan’s England tour forced his bowlers to overstep in the Test matches.

Also, Butt dropped some catches deliberately after taking bribes from Mazhar Majeed. Butt was banned b?y the ICC, and also served jail time aft??er being convicted by London Courts.

Mohammad Asif

Asif’s performances during his years in international cricket forced enthusiasts to draw comparisons of him with Australian legend Glenn McGrath.

His immaculate line and lengths troubled even the greatest batsmen of his era. However, Asif’s promising career was cut short due to his involvement in spot-fixing with Butt and Mohammad Amir.

ICC also handed?? Asif a five-year ban. The pa??cer even had to face jail time after being convicted by Scotland Yard.

Mohammad Amir

One-third of the disgraced Pakistani trio involved in the spot-fixing case of 2010 in England??, Amir was in his teens when he committed the error, under orders from his captain Butt. Amir bowled a couple of huge no-balls, which raised red-flags for the Anti-Corruption Unit of ICC.

Unlike Asif and Butt, PCB pardoned Amir for his crime and made his international com?eback in 2016. However, Amir h?as now retired from Test cricket.

Danish Kaneria

Ka?neria, during the early 2000s, was an integral part of the Pakistan team, especially in Tests. ??However, he went out of favour in the national side.

After years of denial, Kaneria, in 2018? finally admitted to pushing his former Essex teammate Mervyn Westfield to spot-fix during a county match in 2009, f?or which the latter was sent to jail.

Kaneria was banned for life and described as “a grave danger to the game of cricket” by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), who also forbade Westfield for five years.

Mohammad Irfan

The 7′ 1” bowler troubled even the best with his natural towering bounce. However, in 2017, Irfan was suspended for one year after failing to report for spot-fixing. After breaching PCB’s Anti-corruption code during Pakistan Super League (PSL), Irfan was fined with one million rupees.

Other prominent names include:

  • Nasir Jamshed
  • Sharjeel Khan
  • Khalid Latif

Out-of-??favour Pakistan left-arm fast bowler Mohammad Irfan has made a sensational claim regarding former Indian ??opener Gautam Gambhir.

Speaking in a recent interview, Irfan recalled how Gautam Gambhir’s distinct discomfort while facing him during the 2012 bilateral series finished the latter’s white-ball career.

Standing tall at 7ft 1 inch, Irfan dismissed Gambhir four times during that limited-overs series (T20s and ODIs), and the southpaw played only o??ne more ODI for India (vs. England) before being dropped.

“When I played against India, they were not comfortable batting against me. Some of them told me in the 2012 series in India that they couldn’t sight my ball properly because of my height and also didn’t read my pace,” Irfan told the Samaa TV, a Pakistani news channel.

“He (Gambhir) didn’t like to face me in a match, or when both teams had nets, I always felt he avoided eye to eye contact with me. I remember I got out him four times in the 2012 limited over series, and he was unnerved against me,” Irfan said.

Gambhir played his last T20I for India against Pakistan at Ahmedabad in that serie??s.

To a question, Irfan said he wouldn’t know anyone was “scared of facing him” but when he went out, fans congratulated him for ending Gambhir’s white-ball career. He further recalled in the interview that Virat Kohli had told him while batting against him, that he didn’t read his pace

“He (Kohli) told me he thought I would be around 130-135 kph, but I had increased my pace, and I was bowling around 145 kph, and he had problems picking me up. Once when he was batting, he tried to pull a good length ball and missed.

“Yuvraj (Singh), who was at the other end told him in Punjabi. Don’t try to pull him, rather try to cut him. Off my third ball, he went for a pull and was caught behind. Yuvi Paji told him now go back,” Irfan added.
