India’s captain Rohit Sharma expressed displeasure with his opening partner Shubman Gill after being run-out in a regrettable mix-up in the first T20I against Afghanistan in Mohali on January 11.

This T20I marked Rohit’s return to the format in international cricket, having last represented India in a T20I in November 2022 during the T20 World Cup in Australia. Rohit’s?? innings, however, was abr??uptly cut short as he was run out on the second ball of India’s chase of 159.

Unlucky dismissal of Rohit Sharma

Rohit was yet to open his account when, on the second delivery of the Indian innings, he pushed Fazalhaq Farooqi‘s fuller-length ball towards the off-side. Rohit ran the length of the pitch, and even as the fielder at mid-off Ibrahim Zadran didn’t receive the ball in the first attempt, Rohit’s opening partner Gill didn’t leave the crease at the other end. A horrible mix-up followed as Rohit and Gill were both at the non-striker’s end, resulting in Rahmanullah Gurbaz, ??the wicketkeeper, dislodging the bails to dismiss Rohit.

Rohit’s frustration: Displeasure at Shubman Gill

Expressing his frustration, Rohit could be heard on the stump mic reprimanding Gill for the misunderstanding. Gill, attempting to explain, faced Rohit’s fury as the captain returned to the dressing room. Despite the turbulent start, Gill later showcased his batting prowess, contributing significantly with five boundaries before being stumped off Mujeeb Ur Rahman for 23 runs off 12 balls.

Shubman Gill has rapidly risen as a prominent figure in Indian cricket. Hailing from Punjab, Gill’s journey from the small streets of Fazilka to the grand international cricket stadiums is a testament to his immense talent and unwavering determination.

During a recent match in Mohali on September 22, Gill once again showcased his exceptional skills. Playing in front of his home crowd, he played a pivotal role in India’s comprehensive five-wicket victory over Australia in the first game of the three-ODI series.

Australia’s batting performance: Setting a target

Australia, having been invited to bat first, posted a total of 276/10 in their allotted 50 overs. David Warner was the standout performer among the Australian batters, scoring 52 runs off 53 balls. He received support from Josh Inglis (45) and Steve Smith (41), who made handy contributions to the team’s total.

Gill’s sublime strokeplay: A display of pure cricketing artistry

Gill’s partnership with Ruturaj Gaikwad at the top of the order laid the foundation for India’s successful chase. Gill, in particular, exhibited sublime form and technique, gracing the Mohali ground with his impeccable strokeplay. The defining moment of his innings occurred in the second ball of the fourth over, facing the challenge of Marcus Stoinis, who delivered a short-pitched delivery.

In a display of audacious confidence, Gill executed a magnificent pull shot. The ball soared high over deep square leg, clearing the boundary with ease for a breathtaking six. Such was the impact of Gill’s shot that even the seasoned cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle couldn’t help but be awestruck by the young batter’s remarkable skill and class.

Two ball??s later, the 24-year-old continued to dazzle as he used his nimble footwork to drive Stoinis through the covers for a boundary. This masterful shot demonstrated his abili??ty to adapt to different deliveries and his wide array of cricketing shots.

Here’s the video:

Zampa’s heroics lead Australia’s fightback

Their partnership flourished as they amassed 142 runs off just 130 balls, with both batters notching up we?ll-deserved half-cent??uries.

Gaikwad played a crucial role, contributing 71 runs from 77 deliveries, featuring ten fours. However, Adam Zampa claimed Gaikwad’s wicket, and Shreyas Iyer was run out for just 3 runs. Zampa further dismissed Gill for 74 runs from 63 balls, leaving In??dia at 151-3.

Middle-order resurgence and captain KL Rahul’s steady hand:

After the initial flurry of wickets, India found themselves in a precarious situation at 185/4. This is where the middle-order resurgence, led by stand-in skipper KL Rahul, came to the forefront. Rahul, along with Suryakumar Yadav, constructed a crucial partnership of 80 runs for?? the fifth wicket. Rahul remained unbeaten with a composed innings of 58 runs from 63 balls, guiding India closer to victory.

While Suryakumar Yadav contributed 50 runs from 49 balls, he eventually lost his wicket. Nevertheless, Rahul’s steady hand ensured India achieved a win with eight deliveries to spare. This middle-order revival displayed India’s depth in batting and their ability to handle pressure situations.

The highly anticipated three-match ODI series between India and Australia kicked off on Friday, September 22, at Mohali, and it began with a thrilling moment in the very first over. India’s ace pacer, Mohammed Shami, made an immediate impact by dismissing Australia’s star player, Mitchell Marsh.

India wins the toss and opts for bowling

India won the toss and elected to bowl first under the leadership of stand-in captain KL Rahul, who aimed to follow the historical trend of successful chases in Mohali. This match also marked the return of Shreyas Iyer, who had been sidelined with a back issue during the Asia Cup 2023. Additionally, the inclusion of veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin added depth to the Indian lineup.

Shami’s jaffa and Marsh’s early dismissal

At the start of the game, Marsh and David Warner (52) opened the batting for Australia. In the first over, Shami adopted a strategy of angling the ball into the right-handed batter Marsh, consistently targeting the off-stump. Despite conceding a boundary on the second ball to Marsh, he persisted with his plan. It was on the fourth delivery of the over that Shami produced a wicked delivery just outside off. Marsh attempted a swipe, but instead, he managed to edge it straight into the safe hands of Shubman Gill in the slips. Marsh’s innings came to an end, with just four runs to his name from four balls.

Here’s the video:

Jadeja’s marvel and Shami’s magic

Following Marsh’s early exit, Warner and Steve Smith (41) took the reins, constructing a formidable partnership worth 94 runs for the second wicket. Their collaboration seemed to steady the Australian innings after Shami’s initial strike.

Ravindra Jadeja’s brilliance came to the fore as he dismissed Warner near the boundary, with Gill taking a crucial catch. This breakthrough ended Warner’s innings and disrupted his partnership with Smith. Meanwhile, Shami returned in his second spell to create magic with the ball and castles Smith’s stumps, reducing the visitors to 112/3.

Labuschagne-Green’s resilience and Ashwin’s breakthrough

The match witnessed a display of resilience from Marnus Labuschagne (39) and Cameron Green as they built a partnership that took Australia’s total to 157/4. Despite their determined efforts, R Ashwin managed to break the partnership with his precision, getting the crucial wicket of Labuschagne through stumping.

In order to show solidarity with the families of martyrs of ??the Pulwama terror attack, Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) on Sunday removed the photographs of Pakistan cricketers from various points inside the Mohali ?stadium.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the cricket body’s office bearers, PCA treasurer Ajay Tyagi told PTI.
