With the high-voltage Test series between England and India on the horizon, cricket enthusiasts worldwide are abuzz with excitement and speculation about how the two cricketing giants will match up in this high-stakes contest. Both teams have rich histories, storied rivalries, and fiercely loyal fanbases, m??aking this series one of the most awaited events on the cricket calendar.

Adding to the intrigue is the context surrounding the two sides. India, known for their dominance in the longest format of the game, recently faced a significant setback in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Down Under, losing to Australia by a margin of 3-1. This series defeat has raised questions about the team’s form, particularly in overseas conditions, and ha?s further fueled discussions about their readiness to take on England in their backyard.

Amid this backdrop, former England captains Michael Atherton and Nasser Hussain ha??ve shared their expert opinions, offering valuable perspectives on the likely outcome of the series. Their analysis delves into the strengths, ch?allenges, and key players that could shape the series, setting the stage for a riveting showdown between two of the world’s cricketing powerhouses.

Michael Atherton picks his favourites

Atherton expressed his confidence in England’s ability to win the series, citing their strong form and familiarity with home conditions. His confidence is rooted in England’s recent resurgence in Test cricket under the leadership of Ben Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum. The aggressive “Bazballapproach, which emphasizes attacking cricket, has worked wonders for England, making them a dominant force, especially ??at home.

“I think England are favourites to beat India at home,” said Atherton at Sky Sports Podcast.

Nasser Hussain provides his viewpoint

Hussain provided a more nuanced pers??pective, acknowledging England’s advantage at home while highlighting India’s potential to challenge them. He pointed out that India’s recent struggles, including their disappointing performances in the series against New Zealand and Australia, have exp?osed vulnerabilities in their squad. The team appears to be in transition, with senior batters nearing retirement and the younger players still finding their footing.

“I think England at home against India India are coming to that phase where some of their batters will be thinking about retirement it’ll be fascinating to see who they bring on that trip they’ll always be a strong side they they’ve had a poor few months with the New Zealand series at home and then this series in Australia but they have quality players depth of cricketers that will come through,” said Hussain.

However, Hussain didn’t discount India’s strengths, particularly their bowling attack. He singled out Mohammed Shami, who was absent during the Australian series, as a key player if he is fit and available for the England tour. He also highlighted that India’s pace attack, featuring Jasprit Bumrah, Shami, and Mohammed Siraj, could pose a significant threat to England’s batters in swinging conditions, making the contest far from o?n?e-sided.

“I thought they miss Shami (Mohammed Shami) in in Australia. Shami with those conditions and that ball. Shami in England if he can get himself fit to back up Bumrah (Jasprit Bumrah) and Siraj (Mohammed Siraj) that’ll be a seam attack to reckon with but I still think at home England will fancy their chances,” added Hussain.

By the end of the third day of the match the names of Babar Azam and Pakistan skipper Shan Masood? included in the history books as they registered the highest opening wicket partners?hip after follow-on is enforced upon a team.

The England opening pair – Graham Gooch and Michael Atherton – achieved the milestone in the 3rd Test match of India’s 1990 tour of England which included 3 Tests and 2 ODI matches between the two nations and several tour games in between. Both teams arrived at The Oval with different ambitions, while England set their eyes to win the series, after their convincing win in the first Test match at the Lord’s. India aimed to win the match and draw the series.

However, it was the visitors who had a dream start to the match by declaring their first innings on 606/9 with emphatic knocks from Ravi Shastri and Kapil Dev. In response, the England batters failed to match India’s intensity with the bat and were bowled out f?or 340 runs thus enforcing a follow-on.

The home side desperately needed to put runs on-board to save the match which is exactly what the English opening pair did. The two batters had a 176 run partnership before Gooch was dismissed by Narendra Hirwani on 88 runs. The strong start motivated other English batters and in a brave effort England ad?ded a total of 477 for the loss of 4 wicket??s before declaring the innings and the match ended in a draw. Thus, England won the 3-match Test series 1-0.

(4) Marcus Trescothick and Michael Vaughan (England):

The English opening batters added another high score for the opening wicket after a follow-on was enforced on them. This time it was in?? 2004 at St. John’s against the West Indies.

West Indies had already made this match memorable after Brian Lara scored an unbeaten 400 r?uns and scripted history. With the help of a remarkable knock from the skipper, West Indies managed to put up a mammoth 751 runs before declaring their inni?ngs.

In response, the visitors were disappointed with the bat in the first innings and were bowled out for 285 runs. Thus enforcing a follow-on. Desperate to save themselves from a humiliating loss, the English opening batters gave a solid start in the second innings and added 182 runs for the opening wicket. Trescothick contributed 88 off 188 balls before getting dismissed by Fidel Edwards. This helped England put 422 runs on the boar?d in their second innings and save th??e match.

(3) Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes (Bangladesh):

Bangladesh were met with a determined England side in the opening Test match of their 2010 tour of England at the Lord’s. The home side made 505 runs in their first innings and bowled out Bangladesh for 282 runs thus f?orcing Bangladesh to bat once again in their quest to come near to the grand total.

The Bangladeshi opening pair put together a brave resistance to the damp English conditions and relentless attack from pacers James Anderson, Tim Bresnan and Steve Finn. Iqbal scored a heroic 103 runs off 100 balls before Finn got rid of the opening batter. Together with Kayes, the opening pair added 185 ??runs to th?eir team’s total.

However, their brave resistance as the visitors could only giv??e England a target o??f 160 runs which the home side managed to achieve for the loss of just 2 wickets.

Two of the finest Test playing nations faced each other during South Africa’s 2?008 tour of England at the Lord’s for the opening Test match. England, batting first, had a dream run in their first innings and scored 593/8 before declaring their innings. South Africa had a grim start to the ?tour in response as they were bowled out for 247 runs in their first innings.

Trailing by 346 runs, the home side enforced a follow-on. The Proteas in their second innings stood out and faced the English onslaught. Openers Smith and McKenzie added 204 runs between them. Smith made 107 runs before Anderson took his wicket. McKenzie, on the other hand, went on to score 138 runs off 447 balls. The brave response f?rom the visiting side came to fruition as the match ended in a draw.

(1) Babar Azam and Shan Masood (Pakistan):

The recor?d for the highest opening partnership in a fol?low-on was broken by the opening pair of Pakistan skipper Masood and Azam as Pakistan played the final Test match of their South Africa tour in Cape Town. The Proteas had put together a gigantic total of 615 runs in their first innings and wrapped up Pakistan’s first innings on 194 runs.

Pakistan needed a strong batting effort to save the match while playing a follow-on. Azam started the second innings with Masood due to opener Saim Ayub’s unavailability. The two Pakistani batters played the South African pacers displaying exemplary? temperament and added 206 runs be??tween them on the third day of the match to shatter the record.

Towards the dying moments of Day 3, Azam gave his wicket away to Marco Jansen and the historic partnership came to an end. Khurram Shehzad and Masood are currently on the crease for Pakistan as the visitors tra??il by ??208 runs.

The appointment of Brendon McCullum as the new head coach of England‘s white-ball team signifies a pivotal moment in the nation’s cricketing history. His successful tenure as the Test team’s coach, characterized by a fearless and attacking brand of cricket, has garnered widespread admiration and raised expectations for a similar transformation in the white-ball format.

Brendon McCullum’s impact on Test cricket

McCullum’s coaching philosophy has been instrumental in reshaping England’s Test team. By fostering a culture of aggression and encouraging players to express themselves freely, he has created a dynamic and exciting side. The success of young talents like Shoaib Bashir, Tom Hartley, Rehan Ahmed, Will Jacks, and Gus Atkinson under his guidance is a testament to his ability to identify and nurture raw potential????.

A revolution in white-ball cricket

The ECB’s decision to appoint McCullum as the white-ball coach is a clear indication of their desire to revamp a team that has struggled in recent major tournaments. Former cricketer Michael Atherton has emphasized the need for a “revolution” in England’s white-ball cricket and believes that McCullum’s influence can be transformative.

Michael Atherton’s assessment for McCullum

Atherton highlighted the importance of McCullum’s impact on young players at the early stages of their international careers. He suggested that these players are more receptive to new ideas and open to change, making them ideal candidates for McCullum’s coaching style. By instilling a fearless approach and a desire to play attacking cricket, McCullum can shape the future of England’s white-ball team.

“I think Key wants McCullum’s influence brought to bear on some of these really good young players right at the start of their international careers. That’s when you can shape and mould players, isn’t it? That’s when they’re still kind of open to outside influence, when they’re still soaking it all in, eager to learn and eager to change, that’s when you can have the most influence on a young player,â€?/em> said Atherton in Sky Sports Cricket Podcast.

A new era for English cricket

Atherton also emphasised that McCullum’s appointment marks the beginning of a new era for English cricket. His ability to inspire players and create a positive team culture is expected to have a profound impact on the white-ball team’s performance.

“Now, as we move on from Morgan’s generation, I think Key wants McCullum to bring that influence and obviously the white-ball role now intrigues him in a way that it didn’t two years ago, because they’re in need of the kind of regeneration that the Test team needed two years ago,â€?/em> he added.

While McCullum will miss the upcoming series against Australia due to prior commitments, former cricketer Marcus Trescothick will be coaching the team in his absence.

McCullum’s appointment as the new head coach of England’s white-ball team is a significant step towards revitalizing the nation’s cricket. His proven track record in developing young talent and fostering a winning culture makes him well-suited to the challenge of transforming the team’s fortunes. As McCullum embarks on this new journey, the cricketing world will be watching with keen interest to see how his innovative approach will shape the future of English white-ball cricket.

Former England captain Michael Atherton has named as the ideal replacement for Matthew Mott as England‘s head white-ball coach.

ECB announces Matthew Mott’s departure

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) recently revealed that?? Mott has stepped down ??from his role following a series of underwhelming performances.

England’s disappointing campaigns in the ODI Cricket World Cup 2023, where they finished in seventh place, and the T20 World Cup 2024, where they lost in the semi-finals, led to Mott’s resignation. With the search for a new head coach now underway, Marcus Trescothick has been appointed as an interim coach w??hile other candidates are considered.

Michael Atherton names the perfect candidate

Now Atherton shown his support towards former cricketing great Andy Flower for the coaching job. Flower, whose tenure with England saw them achieve significant milestones including their first T20 World Cup victory and a top Test ranking, is seen as a prime candidate to rejuvenate the team’s white-ball fortunes.

In his column for The Times, Atherton reflected on Flower?’s notable achievements in franchise cricket, whi?ch he believes make Flower an excellent fit for the role.

“Flower transformed Multan Sultans in the Pakistan Super League; won the Abu Dhabi T10; took St Lucia to their first CPL final; and won the Hundred with Trent Rockets. These successes demonstrate Flower’s ability to adapt and excel in various competitive environments, skills that are crucial for the white-ball role,” Atherton wrote.

Evolution since previous tenure

Despite previous criticism??s of Flower’s intensity, A??therton suggested that Flower has likely evolved since his last stint with England.

“Flower has changed, too. He is said to have mellowed somewhat, possibly due to age or the evolving dynamics of player power. His extensive experience across different coaching roles has broadened his approach, making him potentially more adaptable and effective,” Atherton observed.

Managing workload

Flower’s current coaching role with the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) could p??resent a challenge in balancing both commitments. However, Atherton argues that managing both roles could be fea?sible.

“International jobs are less sought after than before, and Flower’s IPL commitment might be a sticking point. However, there is no international cricket during the IPL window, and Flower’s involvement in the IPL can keep him attuned to emerging trends and players, benefiting his role with England,” Atherton concluded.

In a riveting display of skill and mastery during the second Test in Visakhapatnam against England, Jasprit Bumrah, India‘s pace spearhead, emerged as a relentless force, inflicting substantial trouble upon the England batters in both innings. The contest unfolded as a saga of cricketing brilliance, marked by Bumrah’s extraordinary performance that left an indelible mark on the match and the series at large.

Jasprit Bumrah’s bowling masterclass class against England in Visakhapatnam Test

As the second Test commenced, England found themselves at one stage in a strong position at 114/2 in response to India’s formidable first-innings score of 396. However, the narrative took a dramatic turn with the entry of Bumrah into the bowling attack. Displaying an exceptional spell of reverse-swing bowling, he orchestrated the downfall of the visitors, bundling them out for 253. Bumrah’s figures of 6/45 in 15.5 overs showcased his dominance and showcased his unparalleled ability to dismantle even the most resilient batting lineups.

The fourth innings witnessed a repeat performance of Bumrah’s brilliance as England, tasked with chasing a challenging target of 399, faced the relentless onslaught of the pace maestro. Bumrah emerged once again as the chief destroyer, claiming three crucial wickets that played a pivotal role in scripting India’s resounding 106-run victory. His total tally of nine wickets in the match rightfully earned him the pr??estigious Player-of-the-Match award.

Michael Atherton reveals crucial weakness in Ben Stokes and Joe Root’s technique

Speaking to Sky Cricket, former England captain Michael Atherton, in the aftermath of the game, extolled the virtuosity of Bumrah, emphasizing the unsettling impact of his extraordinary skills on even the most accomplished English batters. Atherton’s analysis delved into the challenges faced by Ben Stokes, a seasoned campaigner, in coping with the sheer pace and precision of Bumrah’s deliveries. The scrutiny extended to Joe Root, England’s stalwart, who found himself repeatedly at the mercy of Bumrah’s cricketing genius.

“Picking with the speed of the ball is tough with him and I’ve noticed with Stokes, even Stokes actually is an excellent player of fast bowling. He’s hurried with Bumrah. He struggles to pick up the pace, and a couple of times when he’s got him, it looks as though the ball has kept low, which has but it also almost beaten him for pace as well,” Atherton said.

“I think that’s the issue with Bumrah. A kind of stuttering run-up and suddenly like a thunderbolt at 90 miles an hour. So, if you’re a person like Root who has kind of pre-movements. Some batters like Zak Crawley for example stand very still, he just stands there and plays the shot. Whereas most batters have triggers or pre-movements, and Root is one of those, he has kind of rhythmical back and forward and that I think is the problem,” the 55-year-old concluded.

India vs England

With the series finely poised at 1-1, following England’s triumph in the first Test in Hyderabad and India’s emphatic comeback in the second, the cricketing fraternity eagerly anticipates the unfolding drama in the upcoming third Test scheduled to commence in Rajkot on February 15. The stage is set for another chapter of enthralling cricket, as both teams vie for supremacy in this engrossing five-match series.

As England prepares to face India in a momentous five-match Test series, the team led by Ben Stokes as a captain and head coach Brendon McCullum anticipates one of its most challenging assignments. Having reshaped the dynamics of Test cricket and demonstrated prowess against formidable opponents, England now confronts the spin-friendly conditions in India. The duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja poses a significant challenge on turning tracks, testing England’s adaptability.

Michael Atherton’s prediction regarding the winner between India and England

Speaking to Sky cricket, renowned former England cricketer Michael Atherton shared his perspective on the impending Test series against India. Emphasizing the pivotal role of spin in Indian conditions, Atherton believed that India, led by Rohit Sharma, possesses a distinct advantage, primar??ily due to their formidable spin bowling unit and are the cl?ear favourites to win the series.

“I think India will win. Their spinners are better than England’s, and that will be the defining thing in the end. If you go to India, spin will play a big part. It historically has done, and I suspect it always will do. India do have a very strong seam attack as well,” Atherton said.
