In a SA20 2024 match on Tuesday (January 23), the Durban Super Giants convincingly defeated MI Cape Town by 36 runs. Despite MI Cape Town limiting DSG to a modest 157/6, the tar?get proved insurmountable on a challenging surface, leading to MI Cape Town managing only 121/9 in response.

Marcus Stoinis and Noor Ahmed emerged as stars with the ball for Super?? Giants, each picking three wickets. However, Stoinis garnered atte?ntion not only for his bowling prowess but also due to an unfortunate incident where he dislodged the stumps with his bat, resulting in a hit-wicket dismissal.

Durban Super Giants’ innings rollercoaster

Opting to bat first, Tony de Zorzi‘s quick start (20) provided Super Giants with impetus, but George Linde‘s two wickets in consecutive deliveries halted their progress. Both de Zorzi and Quinton de Kock (0) departed in the third over, leaving the team at 23/2. JJ Smuts and Matthew Breetzke then forged a 46-run partnership for the third wicket. Nevertheless Thomas Kuber disrupted Super Giants progress by dismissing Smuts (26) and Heinrich Klaasen (6) in consecutive overs, swingi??ng the pendulum back in the Cape Town’s favour.

Marcus Stoinis’ unfortunate hit-wicket exit

Entering the scene the Australian all-rounder, Stoinis, exhibited dominance with an impressive boundary off Kagiso Rabada. Nonetheless, a sudden twist in his innings unfolded as Stoinis, falling prey to a momentary lapse in focus, found himself dismissed in an unconventional manner – hit wicket.

The crucial moment materialized during the 15th over when Olly Stone delivered a brisk short ball. In an attempt to execute a swift pull, Stoinis grappled with controlling the downward swing of his bat that resulted in dislodging of the off stump. Stoinis, visibly taken aback, couldn’t conceal his frustration and vented his anger on his way back to the pavilion.

For MI Cape Town, Linde stood out as the pick of the bowlers, claiming 2/15 in four overs.

MI Cape Town falters in chase

In response, the Cape Town struggled, and wickets fell at regular intervals during the second essay of the game, owing to a disciplined bowling display from the Super Giants. Sam Curran (38) and Dewald Brevis (21) provided some hope, but once they were dismissed, the Cape Town’s chances faded. Ahmed and Stoinis bowled masterfully for the Super Giants, each picking three crucial wickets. Naveen-ul-Haq also contributed with two wickets, while Keshav Maharaj picked up one.

Newlands Pitch Report:

The renowned Newlands Stadium pitch offers a distinct advantage to bowlers, especially seamers, who can exploit the added movement generated by the track’s moisture.
