On Thursday, an unprecedented event occurred during the match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. Bangladesh allrounder Mehidy Hussain was involved in a muddle with Najmul Hossain Shanto. As a ??????????????????????????result, both batters reached the single crease due to confusion, but after a thorough check, Mehidy Hussain was declared out ??by the umpires.

Here’s what happened:

The incident occurred on the third ball of the 37th over, which Sri Lankan pacer Kasun Rajitha was bowling. Mehidy Hasan placed the ball towards square leg, and the non-striker Shanto ran for a run. On the contrary, fielder Dhananjaya de Silva threw the ball towards the non-strikers’ end, and the bowler dismantled the bails while both batters were standing at the strikers’ end. If one sees this incident as it was, Najmul Shanto should be declared out as he was the one who left his crease and bumped into the striker’s end, but here the twist came in the incident.

According to Law 30.2.1, which talks about ‘which is batter’s ground’, if only one batter is within a ground, it is their ground and will remain so even if they are later joined there by the other batter.

By this law, Najmul Shanto was first to cross the batter’s end before Mehidy Hasan, which ultimately became his ground first. So, despite Mehidy Hasan returning to his crease, the umpires ruled him out instead of Najmul Shanto.

Bangladesh put on a mere 164 runs on board, w??hich was easily chased down by Sri Lanka by losing just five wickets.

No other batter than Najmul Hossain Shanto (89) failed to make any spark for Bangladesh. Sri Lankan spinner Matheesha Pathirana starred with the ball for the hosts. Bangladesh will face Afghanistan in their next game on Sunday? at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore.

The tourists lost set batter, Shreyas Iyer (86), early on Day 2, but the pair of Ravichandran Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav took charge and kept the pressure on Bangladesh bowlers. The duo took the total close to 400, and then came Umesh Yadav, who smashed 15 off 10, including two massive ??sixes to take the t?eam’s total go past the mark of 400.

Mehidy Hasan turned out to be the hero of Dhaka as he drove Bangladesh to a thrilling one-wicket win over India in the first ODI at Sher-e-Bangla Stadium. The nail-biting victory helped the hosts tak?e a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

With only one wicket in hand, Bangladesh needed 51 runs to win the contest. Mehidy formed a sensational partnership with Mustafizur Rahman and finished with an unbeaten 38 to steer over the line. The last-wicket pair st?ayed together for 39 deliveries and added vital 51 runs.

Mehidy fancied his chances by regularly attacking the bowlers. He did give a couple of chances, but India crumbled under pressure, with KL Rahul dropping Mehidy once and Washington Sundar not judging the catc??h. Things we?nt south for the tourists as apart from dropping catches, they bowled no-balls, effected overthrows and misfielded as well.

Earlier, Shakib Al Hasan and Ebadot Hossain ran through the Indian batting unit, eventually packing the visitors for 186 in 41.2 overs. Shakib picked up a five-wicket haul for 36 in his quota of 10 overs, and H?ossain bagged four scalps while giving away 47 runs in 8.2 overs. “I am really happy and excited. I was only thinking about focusing on one area and believing in that strategy, and I knew I only needed to bat about 20 balls to get going. I tried to bowl wicket to wicket with the ball. It is a memorable performance for me,” said Mehidy after the match.

Bangladesh, on Wednesday, defeated West Indies in the second ODI to record their biggest win away from home. The clinical nine-wicket win helped the visitors clinch the series and took an unassailable 2-0 lead with one game to play. This was Bangladesh’s sixth bilateral triumph of their last seven series.

After having opted to bowl, Bangladesh knocked West Indies over for a mere 108, with the hosts yet again surrendering against Bangladesh’s top-quality spin attack. Mehidy Hasan with 4/29 in eight overs and Nasum Ahmed with 3/19 in 10 made Caribbean batters dance to their tunes. Keemo Paul, with an unbeaten 25 off 24 deliveries down the order, helped the hosts breach?? the 100-run mark.

In response, the tourists gunned down the paltry target inside 21 overs, with captain Tamim Iqbal smashing an undefeated half-century. Tamim and his opening partner Najmul Hossain Shanto (20) put on a strong 48-run solid stand before Shanto was removed by Gudakesh Motie.

The Bangladesh skipper then combined with Liton Das to finish proceedings in 20.4 overs. Tamim remained unbeaten on 50 off 62, while Liton was 32 not out. After the contest, Tamim said that they were ‘hungry’ to capture the ODI series against West Indies following their terrible performance in Tests and T20Is.

“Everyone was hungry to win. We failed despite trying in Test and T20Is, so we tried to win in the ODIs. And this was not only me, but all the other 15 members were the same, and probably it is the result of their wish (to win),” said Tamim.

Bangladesh received a massive blow ahead of the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka as their frontline spinner Mehidy Hasan has been ruled out of the openin??g m??atch due to a finger injury.

Notably, the 24-year-old suffered the injury while playing for the Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club in the ongoing edition of the Dhaka Premier League 2022. Mehidy hurt his finger when he tried to take a catch of Tamim Iqbal against Prime Bank Crickete??rs Club on Sunday, April 24.

Habibul Bashar, one of the members of the selection panel, has confirmed the development surrounding Mehidy that the spinner has been ruled out of the two-match series opener and is also doubtful for the second Test. N?ayeem Hasan is set to replace Mehidy in the Test squad. Nayeem has played seven Te??sts so far, taking 25 wickets for the Bangladesh team.

”He (Mehidy) is definitely ruled out from the opening Test due to a hairline injury while he is also doubtful for the second Test,” said Bashar in a statement.

The Sri Lankan team will land in Bangladesh on May 8 for the two-match series, which is also a part of the 2021-2023?? ICC World Test Championship. The visitors will play a two-day practice match at the MA Aziz St??adium in Chattogram on May 10-11.

The first Test will start on May 15 at Z?ahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram, while the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka will host the second Test from May 23.
