Australian cricketer and Gujarat Titans player Matthew Wade has officially announced his retirement from international cricket to pursue a coaching career. Wade, who had a successful international run, will be joining Australia’s coaching staff for the upcoming T20 series against Pakistan and the ODI series in Melbourne next week.

Already experienced in coaching Tasmanian youth and second XI teams, Wade aims to stay involved in Australian cricket while continuing to play domestically. For the next two seasons, he will potentially remain active in domestic cricket for Tasmania and the Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League (BBL), as well as other leagues.

Changes in Gujarat Titans: Potential rebuilding phase for IPL 2025

The Gujarat Titans (GT) are navigating major transformations after a disappointing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season. Following thei??r remarkable debut title win and a runner-up finish the next year, GT slumped to an eighth-place finish in 2024, earning only 12 points from 14 games.

The franchise experienced a pivotal shift as captain Hardik Pandya returned to Mumbai Indians (MI), and speculation swirled around head coach Ashish Nehra’s potential de??parture, which ultimately proved to be unfounded. However, GT’s core management is already deep into planning for IPL 2025, ??preparing for the retention deadline on October 31, where they must carefully select their top six players to build a robust lineup for the upcoming season.

Matthew Wade’s IPL career: A look at his journey in the league

Matthew Wade made his IPL debut in 2011, though his journey in the league has been a winding one, punctuated by limited appearances and ?modest performance metrics. Over his IPL career, Wade has featured in ??just 15 matches, accumulating 183 runs at an average of 13.07, with a highest score of 35. Known for his explosive hitting and wicketkeeping skills, Wade’s role in the IPL has been largely confined to cameo appearances rather than sustained stints as a regular player.

Gujarat acquired Wade in the IPL 2024 auction ??for Rs 2.40 crore, recognizing his experience and utility as a wicketkeeper-batter. Nevertheless, in the 2024 season, Wade struggled to find a consistent place in the starting XI. He played only two matches that season, largely due to GT’s decision to prioritize other players for the overseas slots.

In what turned out to be his last IPL appearance on May 2024 against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, Wade scored a zero, further highlighting his inconsistent performance in the IPL. While Wade’s presence as an experienced hand could have added depth, his time in the league ultimately did not liv??e up to the initial promise, and his statistical contributions remai?ned limited.

3 reasons why Gujarat Titans may not retain Matthew Wade

1. Lack of Significant Impact and Limited Appearances

Wade’s IPL career has not yielded the kind of impactful performances teams look for in retained players. His batting average of 13.07 and a highest score of only 35 across 15 matches reflect his struggle to make an impression in the competitive league. In the 2024 season, Wade featured in just two games, spending the majority of the season on the bench. This limited involvement hints that Wade, despite his skills, was u?nable to secure a crucial role within GT’s squad, making his retention less valuable compared to other potential options. The sporadic nature of his IPL appearances underscores his inability to cement his position, which is a key fa?ctor behind GT possibly not retaining him.

2. Team Composition Challenges with Overseas Slot Limitations

In the IPL, each team is restricted to fielding only four overseas players in their playing XI, which places a premium on versatility and performance consistency among international recruits. For Gujarat, this limitation meant that Wade’s role as a wicketkeeper-batter was often overshadowed by other players who provided greater flexibility or filled more critical positions. GT frequently relied on Wriddhiman Saha, an Indian wicketkeeper-batter, which allowed the team to alloca?te the overseas slots to international players in other areas. This composition strategy, favoring local talent for wicketkeeping, reduced the demand for Wade’s speci??fic skill set, further diminishing his value as a retained player.

3. Wade’s Shift Towards Coaching

With Wade announcing his retirement from international cricket to pursue coaching, his focus has clearly shifted from playing to mentoring. Although he intends to continue playing domestically for Tasmania and in leagues like the BBL for the next couple of seasons, his increasing involvement in coaching may limit hi??s availability and motivation for the IPL. Wade has already taken on roles within Australia’s coaching staff, assisting in upcoming series against Pakistan. Given that Gujarat are?? looking to rebuild after a difficult 2024 season, they may opt for players who are fully committed to the league. Wades dual focus on coaching could impact his performance or availability, which may sway the team’s management towards seeking alternatives.

Australian wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Wade ha?s announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to a ??13-year career.

Matthew Wade becomes wicketkeeping and fielding coach post retirement

While he will continue to play domestic and franchise cricket, Wade will also transition into a coaching role, taking on the position of Australia’s wicketkeeping and fielding coach. His first coaching assignment will be the upcoming T20I series against Pakistan.

Wade’s career was marked by resilience and adaptability. He often found himself competing for a spot in the Australian team across all formats, but he eventually cemented his place as a key player in the T20I side. His crucial contributions to Australia’s 2021 T20 World Cup triumph, particularly his match-winning performance against Pakistan in the semi-final, highlighted his?? ability to perform under pressure.

Despite of his decent performances on the India tour and the 2024 T20 World Cup 2024, the selectors made their intentions clear by not picking Wade for the recent tour of the UK. The 36-year-old represented Australia i?n 36 Tests, 97 ODIs and 92 T20Is, scoring 1613, 1867 and 1202 runs respectively.

“I want to thank all of my Australian team mates, staff and coaches”: Wade

Speaking of his retirement, Wade said, “I was fully aware my international days were most likely over at the end of the last T20 World Cup. My international retirement and coaching has been a constant conversation with George [Bailey] and Andrew [McDonald] over the past six months.

“Coaching has been on my radar over the last few years and thankfully some great opportunities have come my way, for which I am very grateful and excited.

“I will continue to play BBL and the odd franchise league over the summer months but around those commitments as a player I am investing heavily in my coaching.

“As my international career closes, I want to thank all of my Australian team mates, staff and coaches. I enjoyed the ride as challenging as it can be at international level. Without good people around me I would have never got as much out of myself as I did.”

“I also thank my family, mum, dad and sisters for the countless hours they put in over the years getting me to games and training.

“Lastly to Julia and the kids. I can’t thank them enough for the sacrifices they have made for me to continue to pursue my dreams. No words can explain how grateful I am to them, none of this would have happened without their support.”

Long-standing rivals Australia and England went head-to-head in the 17th match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 on Saturday. The intense battle took place at K??ensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados, where Australia triumphed over England with a 36-run victory. The game was packed with thrilling moments and standout performances that kept fans on the edge of their seats.

Tense moment between Matthew Wade and umpire Nitin Menon

One incident that drew significant attention involved Australian player Matthew Wade and on-field umpire Nitin Menon. This altercation occurred in the 18th over of Australia’s innings while Wade was set to face England’s Adil Rashid.

As Rashid bowled, Wade seemed unprepared but still managed to defend the ball back to the bowler upon realizing the delivery. According to cricket rules, the ball could have been calle?d dead if Wade had not played a shot.

Umpire Menon addressed this by questioning Wade’s appeal for a dead ball, asking, “For what?” Wade, unhappy with Menon’s tone, moved towards him aggressively. In response, Menon gestured for Wade to back off, leading to a dramatic and memorable confrontation.

Rajasthan Royals (RR) pacer Kuldeep Sen showcased an outstanding bowling display during their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match against the Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Sawai Mansi??ngh Stadium in Jaipur on Wednesday (April 10). Despite his impressive performance, Rajasthan faced a thrilling last-ball defeat by three wickets, as Gujarat? emerged victorious.

Rajasthan Royals’ strong batting display

Shubman Gill, the captain of GT, won the toss and opted to bowl first after a delayed start due to rain. Yashasvi Jaiswal was the first wicket to fall for RR, scoring 24 runs off 19 balls, followed by Jos Buttler, who managed 8 runs. However, Riyan Parag and captain Sanju Samson then took char??ge, leading a remarkable recovery for Rajasthan. Samson smashed an unbeaten 68 off just 38 balls, including 7 fours and 2 sixes, while Parag contributed 76 runs off 48 balls, featuring 3 fours and 5 sixes. Their partnership of 130 runs for the thi??rd wicket propelled Rajasthan to a formidable total of 196/3 in 20 overs, setting a challenging target for Gujarat.

Strong response by Shubman Gill

In response to RR formidable total, GT began their innings with a promising partnership between Gill and Sai Sudharsan. The duo swiftly accumulated runs, demonstrating their intent with a brisk start that saw them amass 64 runs in just 8.2 overs. Nevertheless, RR’s captain, Samson, decided to introduce his fastest bowler, Kuldeep, into the bowling attack. Sen’s inclusion proved to be a game-changer as he immediately made an impact with his bowling prowess.

Sai Sudharsan’s lbw dismissal

On the third delivery of Sen’s over, he bowled a full-length straight ball to Sudharsan. The batter attempted a scoop shot, but he shifted significantly from his stance across the line and missed the ball completely. As a result, the ball struck Sudharsan’s pad in front of the middle stump. Initially, the on-field umpire ruled not out. Nonetheless, Samson decided to review the decision. Before the third umpire could complete the examination of the ball tracking, Sudharsan observed the replay on the screen himself and voluntarily walked back to the pavilion, realizing he was out LBW.

Kuldeep Sen’s impactful wickets

After a brief rain interruption, Kuldeep returned to bowl another over. In this over, he claimed two wickets, the first of which was Matthew Wade‘s dismissal. Sen delivered a shortish delivery, which Wade attempted to chop onto the stumps. Unfortunately for Wade, he mistimed his shot, and the ball deflected off his bat onto the stumps. It was a disappointing end to Wade’s innings, as he was bowled by Sen.

In the same over, Kuldeep struck again to dismiss Abhinav Manohar. This time, Sen bowled an excellent delivery that cleaned up Manohar’s stumps. It was a beautiful delivery that beat the batter’s defense comprehensively, leaving the stumps disturbed. Sen celebrated both wickets with a finger-on-lips gesture, indicating a silent celebration of his success.

Here’s the video:

Costly final over

However, it wasn’t a fairy tale ending for Kuldeep as RR who were seemed to be in a commanding position till 18 overs went downhill afterwards. GT required 35 runs from the last 12 balls with four wickets in hand. Despite starting the penultimate over well, Kuldeep’s over turned out to be costly. He began by bowling a wide and then conceded a boundary. His fourth delivery was a no-ball, resulting in a free hit, which was dispatched for another boundary. Despite conceding just two runs thereafter, Kuldeep struggled to contain the opposition batters. In the final two balls of his spell, he bowled another wide, allowing the Titans to add five more runs to their total. Kuldeep, who had figures of 3/22 after three overs, ended up conceding 3/41 from his four overs, with an economy rate of 10.20.

Gujarat Titans’ thrilling last-ball victory

With the match coming down to the wire, Avesh Khan, known for his prowess in the death overs, was entrusted with the responsibility of bowling the final over to defend 15 runs. Nevertheless, GT managed to chase down the target, needing just two runs off the last ball. Rashid Khan‘s decisive boundary, a rasping cut shot, sealed the victory for the Titans in what turned out to be a thrilling finish.

Gujarat Titans (GT) have swiftly risen to prominence since their debut in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2022. Led by Hardik Pandya, they clinched their maiden title in their inaugural year, defeating the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in a dominant seven-wicket victory.

Despite a commendable performance, they fell short of glory in the following season, finishing as runners-up after a heartbreaking loss to MS Dhoni‘s Chennai Super Kings (CSK). As they gear up for the latest editi??on, significant changes mark their journey, including a leadership transition and the return of Hardik to his former franchise, reshaping the team dynamics.

Transition in leadership

The talismanic skipper Hardik’s departure to the five-time champions, Mumbai Indians (MI) has necessitated a change in leadership. Now, the responsibility falls on the young shoulders of the masterful batter Shubman Gill. Gill’s instrumental role in Gujarat’s recent successes, including his stellar performance of over 700 runs and four centuries in the previous season, underscores his readiness for the captaincy role. With the guidance of experienced players like veteran Kane Williamson and vice-captain Rashid Khan, Gill will ai?m to lead Guj?arat into a new era of success.

Gujarat Titans (GT) have bolstered their pace attack with the signing of Sandeep Warrier as a replacement for the injured Mohammed Shami.

Kerala seamer joins Titans bowling unit

Sandeep Warrier, a 32-year-old fast bowler from Kerala who now represents Tamil Nadu in domestic cricket, brings limited IPL experience to the Titans. He has played just five matches in the tournament, all with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) between 2019 and 2021. While at other franchises like Royal Challengers Bangalore (2013-15) and Mumbai Indians (2023)?, he failed to secure a spot i??n the playing XI.

In Gujarat, Warrier joins a crowded pace attack that includes established names like Umesh Yadav, Mohit Sharma and Joshua Little. Youngsters Kartik Tyagi, Darshan Nalkande and Sushant Mishra also feature in the Titans’ bowling group.

Mohammed Shami’s absence extends

Shami’s injury woes continue as he recovers from ankle surgery in London. The surgery sidelined him not only from IPL 2024 but also from the upcoming T20 World Cup in June. Reports suggest he might return to action by late 2024.
