In a riveting cricketing spectacle at Buffalo Park in East London, the clash between New Zealand U-19 and Afghanistan U-19 in Match 11 of the ICC U-19 World Cup 2024 unfolded into a nail-biting encounter. The young Kiwis emerged victorious in a hard-fought?? one-wicket triumph, leaving spectators on the edge of their s??eats.

Amidst the pulsating drama that transpired on the field, the spotlight was seized by the remarkable Mankad incident involving Ewald Schreuder. The audacious move was orchestrated by the Afghan spinner and skipper Naseer Khan Maroofkhil, adding an unexpected twist to a??n already intense battle.

Naseer Khan Maroofkhil‘s mankad

The pivotal incident occurred on the first delivery of the 29th over during New Zealand’s run chase. In a crucial moment, Maroofkhil embarked on his run-up to deliver the ball to Matt Rowe, with Schreuder stationed at the non-striker’s end. However, what unfolded defied expectations. The crafty left-armer displayed a surprising twist as he deftly switched the ball to his non-bowling right hand and swiftly dislodged the bails, effecting a run-out of Schreuder even before delivering the ball.

With just two runs needed to secure victory, Schreuder, caught off guard and having strayed too far from the crease, found himself staring in disbelief at the bowler. Despite the shock, replays confirmed the legality of the maneuver, exposing the right-handed batter’s inadvertent error.

The third day of the Boxing Day Test between South Africa and India at Centurion brought forth a riveting display of cricketing skills and a touch of controversy. Amidst the intense battle between bat and ball, India’s spin maestro, Ravichandran Ashwin, added a unique and intriguing dimension to the contest by issuing a warning to Proteas all-rounder Marco Jansen for backing up too far at the non-striker’s end.

South Africa’s lead and India’s fightback

Starting the day with a lead of 11 runs at 256/5, South Africa showcased determination as Dean Elgar (185) and Marco Jansen (84) built a crucial partnership. However, India fought back with Shardul Thakur removing Elgar and Jasprit Bumrah claiming vital wickets. Despite India’s resurgence, South Africa managed to stretch their lead to 16??3 runs before being bowled out for 408.

The Ashwin-Jansen episode

In the midst of the South African innings, a fascinating incident unfolded when Ashwin halted his run-up in the 98th over and confronted Marco Jansen for venturing too far down the non-striker’s end. This move by Ashwin reignited the debate surrounding non-striker end runouts, a topic he has been vocal about since the infamous incident involving Jos Buttler in the 2019 IPL.

Ashwin’s stance on non-striker end run-outs

Ashwin’s warning to Jansen aligns with his unwavering stance on non-striker end run-outs. He firmly believes that batter should not leave the non-striker’s end until the bowler releases the ball, emphasizing the importance of fair play in the game. The incident at Centurion adds to the ongoing debate within the cricketing fraternity regarding the legitimacy and sportsmanship of non-striker end runouts.

It is worth mentioning that while some players and experts support Ashwin’s position, others argue that it goes against the traditional spirit of the game. The diversity of opinions on this matter continues to make it a talking point in cricketing circles.

India’s challenge ahead

As India prepares to face the challen?ge of overcoming the 163-run deficit and setting a significant target, they must navigate the Centurion pitch with patience and resilien?ce.

Ish Sodhi’s run-out and Litton Das’ heartwarming gesture

The incident took place during the 46th over of New Zealand’s innings when Mahmud was in the process of delivering the ball for Bangladesh, and Sodhi left his crease at the non-striker’s end before the release of the red leather. Ish Sodhi praises Litton Das for his act

During the post-match presentation, Sodhi took a moment to express his gratitude for Litton’s act of sportsmanship, calling his gesture ‘nice’. He also reflected on the match and the factors that contributed to the Blackcaps’ victory.

“Really good day. Historically we haven’t done well here and hence it is nice to get the win. Nice of Litton for calling me back after the mankad. That was the whole reason we decided to bat first as the ball would spin more in the second innings, even Ravindra and McConchie got the ball to spin. Playing ODI cricket leading into the WC is awesome, but this is a difficult place to play and to walk away with a win is awesome,” said Sodhi.

Toss and Afghanistan innings

Winning the toss and electing to bat first, Afghanistan put up a competitive total of 300/5 in their allotted 50 overs. Rahmanullah Gurbaz was the star of their innings, amassing an impressive 151 runs off 151 deliveries, including fourteen fours and three sixes. Imam ul Haq played a crucial role, anchoring the innings with a well-composed 91 runs off 105 balls. Babar Azam contributed a valuable half-century with 53 runs off 66 deliveries. However, it was Shadab’s explosive knock of 48 runs that turned the tide in Pakistan’s favour before he fell victim to a bizarre non-striker’s run-out from Afghanistan pacer Fazalhaq Farooqi.

Despite Shadab’s wicket, the match witnessed a thrilling climax as Pakistan managed to clinch the victory in the final over, edging past Afghanistan’s total by just one wicket. Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) faced Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the 15th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Monday (April 10). The Lucknow-based team emerged vi?ctorious in the contest by one wicket. During the nail-biting thriller a controversial incident took place which soon became a major talking point on the internet and drew the attention of the likes of Harsha Bhogle and Ben Stokes.

Asked to bat first, RCB put up an impressive batting display, with skipper Faf du Plessis, Virat Kohli and Glenn Maxwell all scoring big runs. While Du Plessis played a brilliant knock of 79 off 46 deliveries, Virat and Maxwell contributed 61 and 59 runs to the team’s total. The power-hitting from the trio helped RCB post a massive total of 212/2 in their allotted 20 overs.

In response, LSG didn’t start well and lost their opener Kyle Mayers for a duck. However, Marcus Stoinis (65) and Nicholas Pooran (62) then played some breathtaking shots to keep the team in the hunt. Ayush Badoni also contributed valuable 30 runs in the run chase. Despite the explosive batting display of Lucknow batters, the game went down to the final over, where LSG chased down the set target with just one wicket in hand on the last ball. Although there was a chance for RCB to win the game on the last delivery of the 20th over, Harshal Patel failed to execute the non-striker’s end run out, and the Bangalore-based team eventually lost the contest.

On the sixth ball of the final over, Harshal attempted to run out non-striker Ravi Bishnoi, who left his crease before the white leather was delivered, but he missed. Soon after t??he failed effort, he stopped out of the crease and threw the ball back at th??e stumps. The ball hit the target, and Bishnoi was short of his ground, but unfortunately, Harshal had completed his bowling action, so the run-out did not count as per the law.

After the match, Bhogle, who has advocated the non-striker’s end run out in the past, took to Twitter and pointed out the incident taking a dig at the critics that oppose the law and consider it against the spirit of the game.

“Bishnoi was leaving his crease early. Any silly people out there still saying you shouldn’t run the non-striker out?,” tweeted Bhogle.

England Test Captain and Chennai Super Kings‘ (CSK) member Stokes was quick to respond to Bhogle and wrote: “Thought’s Harsha? Umpires discretion.. 6 penalty runs if obviously trying to gain unfair advantage by leaving the crease early? Would stop batters doing it without all the controversy.”

Bhogle commended the English cricketer for his perspective on the matter ??and expressed interest in having a discussion with him. Additionally, the veteran cricket comme??ntator also wished for Stokes to recover quickly.

“Happy to get your perspective, Ben. I am doing a game in Chennai if you have a few minutes. And hope you are fit and playing again soon,” replied the 61-year-old.

Run-out at the non-striker’s end has always been a controversial issue, and cricket enthusiasts across the world are also divided over the legitimacy of this mode of dismissal. However, the International Cricket Council (ICC) last year officially legalised the ‘Mankad’ by moving it from the unfair play category to the legitimate ‘run out’ category. The new rules came into effect on October 1, 2022.

A Tasmanian batter recently fell victim to the non-striker’s run out that left him furious with the bowler and the umpire. The video of the same was posted by the Australian media network Fox Cricket on Twitter.

The incident happened during the SCA Grand Final between Claremont and New Norfolk when a bowler, after spotting the batter out of the crease, dislodged the bails at the non-striker’s end just before releasing the ball from his hand and appealed to the umpire. The match official deemed the Tasmanian cricketer out as per the new rules, and the latter had to go back to the pavilion. However, the player was unhappy with the on-field umpire’s verdict and furiously threw his bat in the air to express his dissent. He even kicked off his gloves in anger on his way back to the dugout.

The teammates of the Tasmanian cricketer were also seen stepp?ing onto the field in resentment.

Here’s the video:

It’s not the first time such an incident has taken place. The non-striker run-out has been subject to huge discussions even before this. While many popular cricketers such as Ravichandran Ashwin and Alex Hales support this mode of dismissal, many don’t agree with them.

Going by the ICC law on the non-striker run-out, it states: “If the non-striker is out of his/her ground at any time from the moment the ball comes into play until the instant when the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball, the non-striker is liable to be run out.”

Veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has shared his thoughts on a run-out incident during the first ODI battle between India and Sri Lanka at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati.

Batting first, the Men in Blues put up a mammoth total of 373 for the loss of 7 wickets in 50 overs. Virat Kohli top-scored with 113 off 87 balls.

In reply, Sri Lanka failed to chase the set target and faced a 67-run defeat. Skipper Dasun Shanaka, who scored 108 (88??), was the lone warrior for the Islanders.

During Shanka’s fantastic inning, a surprising incident took place. In the final over of the match, Indian pacer Mohammed Shami stopped mid-way of his run-up to dislodge the bails at the non-striker’s end after catching Shanka leaving the crease early. When the incident occurred, the 31-year-old was batting on 98. Shami appealed to the umpire, but India captain Rohit Sharma withdrew the fast bowler’s call.

If the decision was sent upstairs, Shanaka might’ve been given out as he was way outside his crease.

Rohit had spoken about the run-out attempt in the post-match presentation. While talking to Murali Kartik, he stated that this wasn’t the way his team thought of dismissing Shanaka.

Now reacting to the controversy, Indian spinner Ashwin said that umpire should’ve given the batter out.

“See, even if one fielder appeals, it is the duty of the umpire to declare a player out if he is out. So, I find it very surprising to have so many taboos surrounding this mode of dismissal. But the entire dismissal is regarding what the bowler does, right? The right of making that dismissal or making that appeal or making that decision lies with the bowler, right,” said Ashwin on his official YouTube channel.

“In so many games, a batter has nicked and walked without waiting for the umpire’s decision. At that time, the batting team captain won’t come and ask, ‘With whose permission did you walk like that? Did you forget the team’s cause? Go back and continue playing. These different treatments for bowlers and batters have been taking place for so many years now,” he added.

Earlier this week, a huge controversy broke out in a Big Bash League (BBL) game when Adam Zampa attempted a run out at the non-striker’s end.

The 30-year-old spinner, who is also the captain of Melbourne Stars, while bowling in the final over of the first innings, attempted a ‘Mankad’ to dismiss Melbourne Renegades’ Tom Rogers.

However, the third umpire turned down the run-out as Zampa had performed full bowli?ng action before dislodging the bails.

Stars eventually lost the contest by 33 runs.

The coach of the Zampa-led team, David Hussey, speaking on the incident after the match, said they would have withdrawn the appeal if the ?TV umpire had deemed the batte??r out.

Now reacting to Zampa’s attempt, Indian off-spinner Ashwin, who himself has a fine history of such dismissals, slammed Hussey over his remark and compared the Aussie spinner to the ‘Undertaker’ of WWE.

Speaking on his official YouTub?e channel, Ashw??in stated,

“I am tired of talking or writing about this topic. Every time this incident happens, there are preachers who hop in and start preaching. But the best thing I loved from this whole incident is the stare given by Adam Zampa after running out the non-striker. It was similar to The Undertaker’s stare in WWE. He didn’t even say a word to the batsman. The batsman also stood in silence without knowing whether it was out or not out.

“I don’t believe what he [Hussey] said. Because if you wanted to withdraw the appeal, you need not have taken that to the third umpire itself. You could have easily withdrawn that appeal even before it had gone to the third umpire. First of all, why should you withdraw the appeal? A bowler is running the non-striker out. The captain will say that the bowler is wrong or what? What a big insult that is to the bowler if the captain is withdrawing the appeal,” he added.

Delhi Capitals’ (DC) off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin let go of an opportunity to ‘Mankad’ batsman Aaron Finch during an IPL match against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in Dubai on Monday.

It all happened in the third over of RCB’s chase of 197 runs when openers Finch and Devdutt Padikkal were on the crease, and Ashwin was introduced into the atta?ck.

On the fourth ball of the over, the Tamil Nadu spinner ran into his delivery stride but did not deliver the ball as he had noticed non-striker Finch walking out of his crease.

Ashwin stopped before releasing the ball and issued a warning to Finch to stay in the crease. When the camera moved towards the Delhi dugout, DC head coach Ricky Ponting was seen with a smile on his face.

Ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020, Ponting had revealed that he wouldn’t be pleased if Ashwin goes for the ‘Mankad’ in the thirteenth season of th??e cash-rich league.

Not to mention, the ‘Mankad’ debate has become the ‘talk of the town’ ever since Ashwin dismissed Jos Buttler?? in the last?? season of the IPL.

Rabada, Stoinis star in DC’s emphatic 59-run

Delhi Capitals beat Royal Challengers Bangalore by 59 runs to go to the top of the IPL points table. Kagiso Rabada starre??d with the ball picking up 4/24 including the key wicket of Virat Kohli.

In their chase, RCB were reduced to 43/3 with Devdutt Padikkal, Aaron Finch and AB de Villiers dismissed in quick succession and even though skipper Kohli tried, his 39-ball 43 could only do so much. Anrich Nortje and Axar Patel grabbed two w??ickets each, while R Ashwin had one wicket to show for his efforts.

After Kohli won the toss and elected to bowl, the Capitals posted 196/4 on the board with the help of Marcus Stoinis’ unbeaten half-century (53 not out off 26) and valuable contributions from Prithvi Shaw (42), Shikhar Dhawan (32) and Rishabh Pant (37).
