Ravichandran Ashwin reflects on his performance

After the match, Ashwin expressed his satisfaction with his performance and the team’s victory. He acknowledged the pressure he faced to replace Harbhajan Singh, a legendar??y spinner, and expressed his gratitude for the support he has receive??d throughout his career.

“I can’t really comment on what sort of impact I have had on this Test match. I had huge shoes to fill, I came in to replace Harbhajan, I used to replicate his action in junior cricket, he was an inspiration to me,” said Ashwin.

The local lad also highlighted the importance of preparation and experience in his success. He mentioned his training in the Tamil Nadu Premier Leag??ue (TNPL) as a key factor in his performance.

“Generally here [at the Chepauk Stadium] when you hit the ball it doesn’t travel faster, but this was a different pitch, felt like back in the 2010s, what helped was the preparation I put in while playing TNPL. I had a good preparatory camp before TNPL and also had a good finish in the TNPL. That helped me here,” he added.

The veteran off-spinner even threw light on his partnership with Jadeja, emphasizing their understanding and experience. He noted that Jadeja’s calm presence and batting abilities provide a sense of stability to the team.

“He [Ravindra Jadeja] is one of the best batters in the Indian team, maybe even in the world, he is a trusted batter, Jadeja walking out gives a lot of calmness to the team. He helped me a lot through my innings. He told me, looks like you are batting really well, you need to buckle down like you are facing your first 10 balls, talking about leaving a few more balls. That partnership comes with experience and batting a lot together,”  Ashwin, who was adjudged Player of the Match for his all??-round show, added further.

On Day 1 of the first Test at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Hasan Mahmud set the tone early for Bangladesh with a masterful display of fast bowling as he delivered a sensational opening spell that rattled India‘s top order.

After removing captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, Mahmud claimed the prized wicket of Virat Kohli, completing a dominant first session for Bangladesh. His consistency in length and ability to move the ball off the surface made life difficult for India’s experienced batting line-up. The early blows stunned the hosts, placing Bangladesh in control of the morning’s proceedings.

Virat Kohli falls to old habit of chasing outside off-stump

Coming in with India reeling at 34/2, Virat Kohli had the weight of the team on his shoulders. With a reputation for being India’s crisis man, expectations were high that Kohli would steady the innings. However, Mahmud had other plans. On the third ball of the 10th over, Mahmud bowled a teasing delivery just outside off-stump. The ball angled away slightly afte?r pitching, drawing Kohli into a drive.

The f??ormer Indian captain, a player known for his impeccable off-side play, shuffled across and went for an expansive drive well away from his body. It was a familiar scenario for Kohli, who, in recent times, has been susceptible to deliveries that offer a hint of movement outside off-stump. His attempt lacked the precision and control requi?red, resulting in a thick edge.

Litton Das makes no mistake as Kohli walks back frustrated

The thick outside edge from Kohli’s bat flew towards wicketkeeper Litton Das,?? who completed the catch comfortably. Kohli, aware of the technical flaw that led to his dismissal, was visibly frustrated as he wal?ked off the field. For Kohli, the dismissal was yet another reminder of his vulnerability against deliveries in the corridor of uncertainty.

It marked a significant moment in the match, as India’s premier batsman fell cheaply for just 6 runs off 14 balls, further denting India’s hopes in the session. Mahmud, who had already sent back India’s top two batters, celebrated Kohli’s dismissal with elation, knowing the impact of removing one of the world’s best batsmen early. Kohli’s wicket was a testament to Mahmud’s discipline and ability to exploit conditions.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant holds firm amidst early collapse

As Kohli made his way back to the pavilion, India found themselves in a difficult position, having lost three early wickets. The top order had collapsed, leaving the team vulnerable, but Yashasvi Jaiswal, fresh off a stellar series against England, ros??e to the occasion. The young left-hander dis??played remarkable composure, batting with caution and defying the relentless Bangladesh bowlers.

At the other end, Rishabh Pant, returning to Test cricket after nearly two years, provided the perfect foil with his aggressive intent. Unfazed by the pressure, Pant launched a counterattack, taking the fight back to the Bangladesh bowlers. Together, Jaiswa??l and Pant built a solid partnership, adding 54 crucial runs for the fourth wicket. By lunch, the duo had guided India to a safer posit??ion at 88/3, stemming the early damage.

The much-anticipated Test series between India and Bangladesh began at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Thursday, September 19. Early setback for India as Rohit  Sharma falls early

India’s Test campaign took an early hit in the sixth over when Bangladesh pacer Hasan Mahmud dismissed Indian captain Rohit Sharma for just 6 runs off 19 deliveries. Mahmud, with his youthful exuberance and precise bowling, bowled an exceptional delivery just outside off-stump. The ball moved away slightly, enough to induce a soft edge from Rohit, who was attempting a defensive shot. Rohit Sharma’s struggles continue against Bangladesh

Rohit’s lean run against Bangladesh persisted as his average against them dropped further to a low 9.75. Despite his remarkable record against other teams, Bangladesh remains the only side in Test cricket against whom Rohit has yet to make a significant score. Before this Test, he had managed just 11 runs in three innings, and his latest score of 6 further solidified his struggle against the Tigers in red-ball cricket. In fact, Bangladesh are the only opposition against which Rohit has never crossed the 50-run mark in Tests. His scores of 6, 6, and 21 in previous encounters highlight a continuing challenge. This unwanted streak for Rohit was compounded on first day of the Chennai Test as he again fell short.

Bangladesh’s confidence boost early in the Test

For Bangladesh, Rohit’s wicket in the opening session was a morale booster. Mahmud’s delivery not only removed one of India’s most seasoned campaigners but also shifted the early momentum towards the visitors. After that Mahmud continued to show his dominance as he picked two more key wickets in the form of Shubman Gill and former Indian captain Virat Kohli. As the series progresses, Bangladesh will hope to build on this crucial early breakthrough and continue to challenge India in their home cond?itions.

Chepauk Stadium is famed for its traditionally flat pitches, which develop into a spinner’s paradise as matches wear on. The surface’s gradual deterioration offers significant assistance to slower bowlers, enabling spinners to make the most of the conditions.
