England national selector Luke Wright has publicly acknowledged Jonny Bairstow‘s disappointment after the veteran wicketkeeper was omitted from the white-ball squads for the upcoming series against Australia. ?Notably, England’s home series against Australia will commence on September 11.

Absence of Jonny Bairstow for the white-ball series against Australia

Bairstow, a mainstay in England’s limited-overs setup, was notably left out alongside senior players Moeen Ali and Chris Jordan. This decision has raised eyebrows, particularly given Bairstow’s longstanding role in England’s cricketing framework. Bairstow expressed his desire to represent England across all formats while participating in The Hundred 2024. However, his exclusion mark a significant shift in the team’s approach as newer players like Dan Mousley and Jacob Bethell received their maiden call-ups.

England’s chief selector Luke Wright’s perspective

Bairstow’s struggle to secure a spot in the national team is further compounded by the emergence of promising players such as Will Jacks and Phil Salt. Despite a designated ???role in the middle order, Bairstow’s performances failed to meet expectations. His recent performances in County cricket, including a fifty against Sussex and a duck in the second innings, have not been enough to reverse his fortunes with the national team.

Wright remains hopeful for Bairstow’s comeback, acknowledging his resilience and past instances where h?e has defied expectations. Wright emphasized his belief in Bairstow’s ability to reclaim his place, despite the current competit??ion.

“It’s not the case, when we spoke to him, that he’s done. We just want him back to [being] one of the best players in the world. He understands that. He doesn’t like it. One thing Jonny will do is fight back, and I hope he does and gets himself back in the team. I’m certainly not going to write Jonny off. Jonny’s countless times when people have shown them that they’re wrong, and hopefully he shows that we’re wrong as well,” Wright was quoted as saying by the BBC.

Jason Roy, a vital part of England‘s victorious 2019 World Cup squad, faced a devastating setback as he was left out of their final roster for the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023 in India. The decision to exclude Roy was primarily due to a back injury that had plagued him in recent weeks, causing him to miss the New Zealand series despit??e being initially named in the squad.

Harry Brook’s inclusion as the sole change

In a surprising move, England opted to replace Roy with Harry Brook as the solitary alteration to their provisional World Cup squad, which had been announced in August. This decision reflects England’s commitment to ensuring a strong and competitive squad for the global ODI event.

England’s confidence in squad depth

Luke Wright, England’s chief national selector, expressed unwavering confidence in the team’s ability to defend their World Cup title in India. Despite Roy’s absence, Wright highlighted the squad’s incredible depth and the presence of highly skilled white-ball players capable of delivering match-winning performances when required.

“We are blessed with an incredibly strong group of white-ball players which was underlined by the performances in the series win against a very good New Zealand team,” Wright said as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

The tough decision behind roy’s exclusion

Wright elaborated on the difficult choice to exclude Roy and mentioned that while it was challenging, the squad retains substantial strength to rise to important occasions. He explained the rationale behind choosing Brook over Roy, emphasizing Brook’s ability to provide coverage from batting positions one to six, a versatility that Roy does not possess.

“The strength of the group has meant that we have had to make some tough decisions on world-class players with Jason Roy missing out and Harry Brook coming into the squad,” the 38-year-old added.

” We realised things had slightly changed and Dawid would be the one opening the batting with Jonny in the World Cup. Then really it was a case of the spare batter and what did that look like? From Jason’s point of view, he probably only covers us for an opener. Harry gives us that cover from No1 to No6,” the Grantham-born ellaborated.

Roy’s opportunity as a reserve

Although not included in the final squad, Roy still has an opportunity to be part of the team as a reserve player, potentially providing cover for one of the opening positions. This decision reflects England’s flexibility and preparation for unforeseen circumstances during the tournament.

“As reserve batter at top of the order, we’ve made it very clear that we still see him as the man to do that. We’ve spoken to him about that and he has time to reflect over the next few days. It is obviously not an easy pill to swallow. The earlier response was that he’s still available for England. Now unless that’s changed, at the moment that’s how we see it. So for a top order reserve batter then Jason is going to be our man,” Wright concluded..

England’s history of making tough calls in World Cup squads

England’s history in the World Cup has been marked by the necessity to make difficult decisions regarding players initially named in their provisional squads. A notable precedent occurred in the 2019 World Cup when David Willey had to relinquish his spot to Jofra Archer. This bold decision proved pivotal, as Archer went on to deliver the unforgettable Super Over that secured England’s dramatic victory over New Zealand in the final at Lord’s. Such strategic choices have illustrated England’s commitment to assembling the strongest possible team for World Cup campaigns.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) unveiled the provisional 15-player squad for the upcoming Men’s ODI World Cup 2023 on August 16, 2023. Notably absent from this lineup is Jofra Archer, who played a pivotal role in England‘s victorious  2019 World Cup campaign at home. Archer’s outstanding performance included 20 wickets from 11 matches and his memorable delivery of the thrilling Super Over in the final against New Zealand. However, injuries have plagued the fast bowler, limitin??g his participation to just seven ODIs since the start of 2020.

Archer suffered an unfortunate elbow injury during the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), prompting his early return to focus on the Ashes 2023 series. Nonetheless, his recovery was not in time, causing him to miss that series as well. With the impending Men’s ODI World Cup, set to commence on October 5 in India, Archer’s involvement remains uncertain.

Archer needs miraculous recovery for ODI World Cup 2023 participation

Luke Wright, England’s chief selector and Archer’s former Sussex teammate, has noted the positive progress in Archer’s rehabilitation. There’s optimism that he could potentially feature in the latter half of the tournament. While the Bridgetown-born cricketer will travel with the squad as a reserve player, his recovery will be closely monitored to determine his readiness. Although the team management would ideally want Archer in the squad from the beginning, the timeline constraints are acknowledged.

“There has got to be a duty of care with Jof. We know how desperate we all are to have him – there’s no doubt about that – but we’ve also got to get it right for him. He’s been very unfortunate with these injuries.. regarding the World Cup, unfortunately, we’re just running out of time,” Wright was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

“He’s not going to come round quite quick enough, especially for the first part of the World Cup. There is a duty of care with him. We have to make sure that long-term, we get it right because we see him as a huge asset for a long time. As much as the temptation is to try and rush him in and get him in for the start of this World Cup, unfortunately, we’re just going to run out of time,?/em> the 38-year-old added.

Wright further emphasized that unless Archer makes a miraculous recovery from his injuries, it’s unlikely he will be included in the final and revised World Cup squad, a decision that needs to be confirmed by September 28, 2023, according to International Cricket Council (ICC).

“When you look at that squad, you cannot have a bowler that might not be available for the second half and definitely not for the first half. If something miraculous happens with him, we have time to change things but I just don’t see it happening. It is just coming too soon and we can’t rush this decision on Jof (Jofra Archer) this time,” Wright concluded.

Ben Stokes has com??e out of retirement from the 50-over international cricket format and has been included in England’s ODI squad for the upcoming series against New Zealand. The announcement was made by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) along with the unveiling of the T20I squad to face New Zealan??d on? August 16, 2023.

The forthcoming series between England and New Zealand consists of 4 ODIs and 4 T20Is, beginning with the T20Is on August 30. The T20I matches are scheduled for August 30 in Chester-Le-Street, September 1 in Manchester, September 3 in Birmingham and September 5 in Nottingham. Subsequently, the ODIs will be held on September 8 in Cardiff, September 10 in Southampton, September 13 at the Oval and September 15 at Lord’s.

Matthew Mott, England’s white-ball coach, had earlier disclosed that captain Jos Buttler would be discussing the prospect of Stokes returning from his ODI retirement to participate in the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023 in India. It appears that Buttler’s conversation with Stokes was successful, resulting in the all-rounder’s decision to rejoin the ODI squad.

Wright is confident that England fans and everyone else can be extremely pleased

Luke Wright, England’s Men’s National Selector, expressed his delight at Stokes’ choice to reverse his retirement and make a comeback to the ODI format. The 32-year-old’s ability to perform well in high-stakes matches is expected to provide the defending champions with a significant advantage.

“It wasn’t really a case of changing his mind. He was always interested in coming back. He had to make that priority of getting through the Ashes, have a break and give the body a rest. It wasn’t a case of needing to beg him or anything like that, he was always keen, so it was actually fairly straightforward. Once his body was in a good place and he’d had a rest, he was really keen to play. We’re delighted from our point of view and I’m sure England fans and everyone can be absolutely delighted,” Wright was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

In his previous 105 ODI appearances, Stokes has scored 2924 runs, including three centuries, and taken 74 wickets. His exceptional 84-run innings in the final of the 2019 ODI World Cup played a pivotal role in England’s victory against New Zealand, ultimately secured in the Super Over.

Cricket is a funny game, and many humorous events h??ave taken place on the field.

Over the years, the fascinating game has developed a lot. There was a time when Sachin Tendulkar was awarded a champagne bottle in England when he was just 17 years old. Similarly, Allan Donald, o??nce was awarded a jewellery set ?as the man of the tournament recognition.

Let’s have a look at the five weirdest Man of the Match/Series awards in cricket.

5. “Mini Truck” as Man of Series award

Jasprit Bumrah, India’s frontline fast bowler, won the Man of the Series and was given a ‘mini truck’.
This happened during a five-match bilateral series against Sri Lanka in 2017. Bumrah bagged 15 wic??kets at a stellar average of 12 as India went on to win the series 5-0. The funniest moment, however, was when the fast bowler was awarded a mini truck,

English all-rounder, Luke Wright, was awarded a “blender?for his man of the match performance in a league fixture in the Dhaka Premier League in Bangladesh.

The fact that the number of sponsors in the ?competition was less, the orga?nisers had to think out of the box for the man of the match awards, and they came up with this.

Wright posted a picture after the match with the blender and wrote: “Pleased we won my first match for Abhanai today. Have to say I have never been given a blender for MoM before.?/p>

England all-rounder Luke Wright has slammed Iceland Cricket fo?r taking a direct jibe at Afghanistan leg-spinner Rash??id Khan.

The 20-year-old Rashid had an off day at the Old Trafford in Manchester during the World Cup 2019 clash against England. The leggie gave away 110 runs in nine overs, as England posted a humongous total of 397-6 in their stipul??ated 50 overs.

Rashid was hit for 11 sixes during the onslaught by England’s batsmen, specially Eoin Morgan and Moeen Ali.

Afghanistan managed to survive 50 overs in ??their innings but lost the match by 150 runs.

After England’s innings, Iceland Cricket took to twitter to take a jibe at the Afghan spinner.

“We’ve just heard that Rashid Khan has scored Afghanistan’s first century of the #CWC19! Wow! 110 from 56 balls. The most runs ever scored by a bowler in the World Cup or something. Well batted young man. #ENGvAFG #AFGvENG,” Iceland Cricket tweeted.

After this tweet, Wright came out in support of Rashid ??and criticised Iceland Cricket, calling their tweet rubbish. The 34-year-old Wright adv??ised them to be respectful towards Rashid as the latter has done so much for Afghanistan cricket and associate members.

“Rubbish tweet. Rather than trying to be funny why not be respectful to someone that has done so much for cricket and especially associate members,” Wright wrote in reply.

England fast bowler Stuart Broad also came in support of Rashid and responded to Wright’s tweet.

“He is a world class bowler & a delight to watch. Everyone has bad days in our sport,” wrote Broad.

Essex skipper Ryan ten Doeschate displayed an outstanding effort on the field at the boundary rope to take Sussex batsman Luke Wright‘s catch.

Ravi Bopara was bowling his second over of the spell when Wright decided to take him on and struck the ball right over the bowler’s head.

On seeing this, Doeschate came runn?ing down from straighter long off position towards the boundary and got his hands to catch the ball. He soon realized that the ball might get past the boundary for a six. In an almost a reflex action the 37-year-old Dutch threw the ball back in the air and completed the catch by coming back inside the boundary.

Before asking for a TV review to confirm the catc??h, the on-field umpire could not stop himself from laughing.
